So unless you have a copywriting background be prepared to invest a lot of time (and possibly money) in learning the fundamentals. I’ll be honest — building a popular blog is tough. Really tough.

And once you’ve scaled your blog beyond a certain point, you might be surprised how little time you actually spend doing the thing you love — writing.

So, if your dream is to make money blogging , you’d better be as excited about the prospect of running a business as you are about writing your next blog post. (In fact, if you’re making six figures, writing is one of the things you should probably outsource.)

But there is a path to making money from a blog where you still spend a good proportion of your time writing.

And it starts with picking a writing niche where a large, passionate audience already exists and — this is crucial — where you can find successful products from trusted names to sell.

Promoting affiliate products (affiliate marketing) is a much smarter way to start extra cash from a blog than creating your own product.

With an affiliate product , someone else has already done the hard work of validating the market, building the product, and enhancing it based on customer feedback. Someone else gets to handle the pre-sales inquiries, payments, refunds, and product support.

The fast path is to take at least one of the courses Jon Morrow offers on this site. Writers who are taking his courses are always welcome to guest post on my site because I know they’re serious and going to be above average.

It can cost a lot to edit content, so the better the writer the less time and money it takes to get it ready to publish. Some writers need zero editing and know how to SEO images and the content so those writers can easily get contributor access and invited back regularly.

And you are going to teach us how to do this, right Glen? haha I love Smart Blogger, great blog. I wonder how many will do a little bit of a couple of these. I have been leaning a little bit towards the conversational copywriting, but with all of these, you have to learn how to write. And, with the online writing, I think writers need to have a little bit of copywriting knowledge. Once we settle on one of these avenues, it helps build our own differentiation.

As someone who has had that kind of success on Kindle, it’s definitely doable. But I’ve seen a few platform changes that have changed the playing field dramatically.

The books don’t have to be that long. You can write and sell e books at 10-20k words. Steve Scott and Ryan Biddulph both wrote dozens of mini books and found success.

A bunch of interesting strategies. I’d say that #2 and #4 require robust knowledge/expertise beyond just writing well. And particularly with #2 – I’d be curious to hear from people who have done it, because it seems to me like a very narrow niche that hard to get into.

But one more vote for writing books. And yes, while it is always a good strategy to have several books out there, it’s also possible to write a book that sells so well, you can live off it. It’s (almost) happened to me.

You can also create products based off the book to further diversify and increase your chances of living off your writing.

I’d recommend investing time and effort into understanding what people want and buy books on, as well as what’s already out there – so following the same principles of content creation that Jon Morrow (and you, and the whole team) writes about.

I’ve found the most financial success with #2, simply by providing local companies with online content. My three years of experience in blogging place me in a valuable position to offer my “expertise” as they just start to venture online.

Yes #2 needs some domain expertise and #4 requires a deep knowledge of the target audience but that can be acquired with research and studying successful campaigns for the same audience.

And #2 isn’t as narrow as you might imagine – but it takes some time to build momentum.

I’ve been doing #1, #2 & #4 for several years. Have a core group of clients (small businesses and non profits) and editors who use me regularly. Diving into #3 this month and learning to write radio scripts at the same time.

I had to learn a number of specialized skills to cobble together an income – however, this suits my personality. I wouldn’t last 6 months at a job where I just did one thing and didn’t have to force myself to keep learning. In any given week I can be interviewing for a column or article for print, writing SEO blog posts for niche businesses, writing marketing copy (appeals, newsletters, etc.) Or working on my fiction. Love it, but it took years to find a solid group of clients and editors and to receive enough referrals I didn’t have to continually hunt down work and hope I got paid.

Sounds like you’ve done the hard work of breaking through and are now reaping the rewards. Love that you’re using a mix of these different approaches. Sounds like it gives you a lot of variety, but also you have more security too, not relying on one source of income.

Thank you so much for this insightful and helpful post! I’ve been dipping my toes in different areas of writing for the last few years. I started off by writing a novel–which I’m still editing (hopefully to be done soon!)–but have tried my hand at guest-blogging and even just recently started my own blog. I do freelance editing as my main job, so that gives me the flexibility and lifestyle of a freelancer–which I LOVE–but in the end, WRITING my own content is my passion, and I hope to get to the point of a livable income from that someday in the not-too-distant future. I found this particularly interesting because I have so many blogging students who tell me they want to be a “freelance writer.”

I’m never quite sure what that means.

My own writing is consumed with writing my blog, some unpaid guest posting and writing my own training info courses which are, really, far more video than text.

So, I usually end up telling them to look for the “mills” that churn out copy for paying clients, but only pay writers something like 3 to 6 cents a word.

That’s a tough way to earn an income, and is why it’s commonly referred to as “beer money.”

You’ve given me a much more hopeful perspective on just what “freelance” might mean to my clients and students and I’m sending them to this article first, before we talk more seriously about their options.

My suspicion is that some of your students who want to be freelance writers don’t really know what they mean by that either! 🙂

I hope this article puts a few of them on a realistic path to achieving their goals.

I quit my academic career as an anthropologist and started a travel writing blog (the two overlap hugely though it may not be obvious). I had to change my writing style a lot – in a way hide the wordiness of the academic talk to attract a wider audience. But once local business and magazines noticed me, my academic background and my research expertise combined with travel topics are exactly what they are willing to pay for. I’d say it’s not always easy to choose a single path. It’s important to become aware of your own unique skills and then position them inside a niche. 🙂

Indeed, there’s a lot of money to be made as a writer. Although, writing can be a very tedious profession as a starter but once you’ve honned and nutured your skill, the opportunities are endless.

I’ve followed Steve Scott on all his kindle publishing guides back in the days and man, that guy really knows his stuff.

The good news is that I finally published my first ever kindle book this week and so far, it’s already doing well.

I have about 12 reviews so far and was able to take it to #1 best selling book in its category within 48 hours of launching (Although, i was giving it out for free).

I plan to be publishing new ones as often as possible too, let’s see how it goes.

Writing for popular blogs is nice but its really difficult to achieve. Getting a popular site to accept your post seems impossible as a blogger.

It’s easier than you think. We’ve been teaching students of all abilities to do it for years. Here are a few tips:

1) Study what’s popular on your target blog before making your pitch. Don’t think only about what you want to write about, but what their audience loves reading about.

2) Study headline writing and spend time crafting great headlines for your guest posts.

3) Pitch two or three different topic ideas at the same time to increase the chances of getting a positive response.

Quick question though, there are times I feel that writing (especially for corporate requirements) is becoming a tedious process. I was just wondering what makes you passionate about writing?

If you’re writing about a topic you’re not particularly interested in, yes, it can become tedious.

I guess I’m fortunate in that I am interested in the topics I get to write about.

I find it’s also motivating to think about the possible transformation for your readers. So even if you’re not super passionate about a topic, maybe you can be passionate about what your writing helps your readers achieve.

Another thing to help keep your writing passion alive is to have a side project you dip into from time to time when your enthusiasm lags.

On balance. You have to be happy with your own work — but when you’re asking other people to give you their time and attention, then you owe them some degree of quality and usefulness.

Being a writer is hard. What most people want to be is an author. You know, the sort that attends cocktail parties and is fawned over by fans and publishers and media moguls. Also plenty of sex is to be had from said fans, and there’s all of the adulation in the press and in readings and signings. But writing? That’s fucking drudgery. Few people want to actually do that.

I've been making money online as a freelance writer since 2009. Freelance work is just one idea of how to earn extra cash online. From entrepreneurship to flexible work-from-home gigs, there are lots of innovative ways to make a few extra dollars online -- or a new full-time living.

Making money online is not a "get-rich-quick scheme." But it can be a legitimate way to pump your savings account with some extra cash and build long-term financial security. Whether through a side hustle that's relatively easy to start, or a more complex online business that might replace your day job, the internet makes many things possible.

1. Take online surveys for money

Companies are constantly doing market research surveys to see what consumers like you think of their brands and product ideas -- and they'll pay for your time. For example, Swagbucks and Survey Junkie will pay you to take online surveys. According to Swagbucks, typical surveys might pay $0.25 to $5 each, and you could make around $50 to $250 per month.

2. Be a virtual juror for mock trials online

How To Write A Promissory Note For A Personal Loan

If you’re lending someone a large amount of money, such as a personal loan to family or friends, writing a promissory note just as if you were a lender from a bank can formalize the process and expectations. Writing a formal promissory note also benefits the borrower, too. It gives them a written agreement that outlines the loan costs, repayment obligations and any required collateral.

Here’s what you need to know to write a promissory note for a personal loan.

What Is a Promissory Note for a Personal Loan?

If you’ve ever borrowed money from a lender, you’ve likely signed a promissory note.

A promissory note is a legally binding agreement that lays out all the details of the loan. It’s a contract that includes the loan amount, repayment obligations, loan costs and what the lender can do if the borrower doesn’t repay the loan. When you sign a promissory note as a borrower, you agree to the terms of the loan and promise to repay it.

We’re most familiar with using promissory notes when we take out a personal loan , a student loan or some other sort of credit from a bank or lender. But sometimes we lend money to friends and family, too. Often, we simply lend them money with an unofficial or even verbal IOU.

But that can easily backfire. What if your nephew skips town with your $5,000, for example? Or what if your aunt takes her time repaying you when you could really use the money now? Having a formal promissory note in place can help prevent these problems.

When Should You Use a Promissory Note?

You should use a promissory note every time you lend someone money that you’d like to be repaid. On the other side, it’s also beneficial to sign a promissory note anytime you borrow money from someone.

In most cases, promissory notes for small amounts, like spotting someone at dinner or filling up a tank of gas, aren’t necessary. But if you’re going to lend someone a few hundred or thousand dollars, you’ll want to make sure you have a formal promissory note written so everyone is in agreement on the loan terms .

How To Write a Promissory Note

Although it’s a legal document, writing a promissory note doesn’t have to be difficult. There are even websites online that offer fill-in-the-blank templates, like eForms or LegalZoom .

At its most basic level, a promissory note should include the following things:

• Name of the lender and borrower
• Loan amount
• Whether the loan is secured or unsecured
• If the loan is secured with collateral , it should define the collateral and when the lender can take possession of it
• Interest rate
• Payment amount and frequency
• Payment due date
• Whether the loan has a cosigner , and if so, who

If you’re charging interest on the loan, you can easily calculate the payment amount using a loan interest calculator . All you’ll need to enter is the loan amount, the term length (i.e., how long the borrower will take to pay it off) and the interest rate.

Keep in mind that each state has its own laws about the maximum interest rate you can charge on a loan. These are known as usury laws, and you’ll need to check them to make sure your loan interest rate is legal if you’ll be charging interest.

Signing and Storing a Promissory Note

It’s often a good idea to have a lawyer review your promissory note to make sure everything is valid and you’re not inadvertently violating any laws. However, using a lawyer is not necessary for the loan to be valid.

Once you draft the promissory note, it’s time for everyone to sign it: the lender, the borrower and the co-signer (if there is one). Again, seeking professional help such as notarizing the signatures is a good idea but not required. If you go to court to sue someone, it’ll ensure the other side can’t claim you forged their signature.

Make sure everyone who signed the promissory note gets a copy for their records. It’s a good idea to make a separate copy and keep it in a safe place too, such as in a locked filing cabinet and/or on your computer’s hard drive.

How To Make Changes to a Promissory Note

It’s okay if you need to make changes to your promissory note, but to do so, you’ll need to get everyone’s permission first.

To adjust the contract, it’s usually easiest to simply write up a second document as an amendment to the original document. Write down the changes, whether it’s the interest rate, the payment amount or something else. Then, have everyone sign that copy again, and give everyone a copy of the amendment. That way, it’ll still hold up in court if it’s ever needed.

Dear Heloise: When barn swallows built their mud nests over the door on our small recessed porch, we tried many things to discourage them. Several years ago, we nailed a plastic snake over the door, and it has kept the swallows away. I hope this tip works for others. -- Sara, in Texas

NESTING SEASON

Dear Heloise: We had the same issue with bird nests at our residential home in Denham Springs, Louisiana. We have a small vestibule to access our front door.

After trying to remove several of the mud nests as they were being built, I found some “bird netting” in the garden center at the local Walmart that costs less than $10. It’s black in color. This netting is usually used to drape over fruit trees to keep birds from eating the fruit. I was able to block off the entrance of the vestibule with the netting by installing screws to the inside wall, about 3 feet apart. The netting is flexible, and I simply stretch it and hook it to the screws during nesting season.

This has worked wonderfully. Because the netting is so fine, it cannot be detected from the street, which is about 40 feet out from our entrance, thereby not affecting the aesthetics of our home. After nesting season, I unhook and remove the netting and store it until next season.

I still see swallows flying around and nesting in the vestibules of our neighbors’ homes. I have informed them of my solution, but for unknown reasons, they have not tried the method themselves.

Make the Most of Summer Essay Writing

I took this class to explore the Biology Department and it ended up defining my freshman Fall. I grew close with other biology-minded students and together we delved deep into cellular mechanisms and processes in a fast-paced environment. The labs were long but rewarding and everything about this class made me a better scientist—Professor Bezanilla is an amazing teacher! I would recommend this class to anyone with a passion for biology and research.

“Who do I want to be?” is a question that I frequently ask myself as an undergraduate (and I’m sure you will as well). A good place to begin answering this question, however, is “Who am I ?” Taking Investigative Memoir as my first-year Seminar allowed me to explore this question via personal reflection and expressive writing—something that has helped me frame my identity at Dartmouth with the rest of my life. College can be a surreal experience, but Professor Sharlet’s introduction to the world of creative nonfiction has given me the ability to transform my own perceptions into tangible, recorded stories.

As a kid I drew a lot; I was inspired by architectural books like “Pyramid” and “Castle” and fascinated by illustrations in “The Way Things Work.” All of these books are by the author David Macaulay—and I had the opportunity to take this very class with him! I completed weekly sketchbook exercises, worked on visually communicating inventions, and was able to receive personal feedback. The theme of visual illustration as a tool in engineering resonated strongly with me, inspiring my interest in an engineering major modified with studio art. Given my long relationship with his work, this class was truly a dream come true.

I hope you enjoyed the Mushroom cover image. I could have kept walking down the sidewalk on the way to—you guessed it—writing things like this blog post, but I stopped to capture the moment.

If you're anything like me, sometimes you go weeks without writing anything. Sometimes you stop and take pictures of mushrooms to delay the inevitable (okay, maybe that's on another level). Regardless, you've probably struggled at some point when it actually came time to write something. If you're a rising junior or senior right now, you might be receiving a lot of advice about getting an early start on your college essays. I thought it might be helpful to share my experience and highlight the idea that it's quite possible to begin the writing process earlier—without necessarily putting your fingertips to the keyboard. 

When I was applying to schools, I went down a rabbit hole of essay writing strategies and devoured examples of "successful" essays. I read a few books and probably listened to a full work week's worth of podcasts. Maybe this was my method of coping with the fact that I had essays to write that I didn't want to start yet—but I still found it very valuable. The more related information I was able to take in, the more I could begin to see how I might approach writing my own essays. I started the reflection process early and my ideas were able to marinate.

All this is to say that the actual, deep work that was required for me to end up with essays I was proud of came from the process of not writing. I was intentionally keeping track of ideas through notes, but I was also subconsciously processing how I could present myself in my essays. When it came time to actually write, the task became to convey my thoughts in the most effective way possible—and that simply came through grammar, vocabulary, and some storytelling strategies.

I also knew the methods of expressing my marinated ideas, so to speak, were important, but I came across an insight. You can take my word with a grain of salt, but from my own college essay journey, I found that it can be easy to get caught up in flowery language, complex syntax, and experimental writing structures.. It would have been easy to deem the way I was telling my story into the 'content' of the story, but I realized a focus on the content itself and working backwards yielded a more authentic representation of myself. 

Anyways, I hope this alleviated some pressure to have your college essays fully fleshed out by the end of summer. Have ideas and be constantly thinking about who you are, who you've been, and who you want to be. The writing will come.

While paper checks may not be as common as they once were, check writing is still a beneficial skill to have. Modern payment methods may be faster and more convenient, but they aren’t always available. This guide to writing a personal check—and some practice—will help you master the process.

What to know before you write a check

Writing a check will debit money from your checking account or another associated bank account. This happens when the payee cashes or deposits the check you wrote.

The essential elements of a paper check

• Top left: The account holder’s name and address
• Top right: The check number and an empty date field
• Bottom left: An optional memo field
• Bottom right: The signature line
• Middle: Fields for the payee, numeric dollar amount and written-out dollar amount
• Lower edge: The routing number and account number

The font and spacing of these elements may vary among personal checks. However, the general positions are the same, and understanding where vital information goes will help you write a check properly.

How to fill out a check

Always start with a blank paper check. There should be no stray marks, smudges or writing on it. If everything’s empty, you’re ready to begin filling out the check.

Step 1: Write the date

Put the date in the top-right corner. The current date will allow the check to be used immediately by the recipient. Alternatively, you can postdate a check, which means adding a future date. This limits the check from clearing until that date. Banks may not accept a check for deposit until the date either.

Step 2: Add the recipient’s name

The check recipient is also known as the payee. You can make out a check to an individual or business using the full name. This person, business or other party’s name should be written on the center of the check, on the line that follows “Pay to the order of.” Make sure the payee’s name is spelled correctly and legible, or the check may not clear.

Step 3: Write the dollar amount in numerals

In a small box on the right-hand side of the check, write out the intended payment amount in numerals. You will need to write the dollar and cent amount of the deposit, even when you’re not included cents. For example, the numerical dollar amount for a check written for twenty dollars should appear as “$20.00.” Make sure to include the dollar sign if it’s not already included in the field.

Step 4: Write the dollar amount in words

You will need to write out the dollar and cent amount in words, not just numerals. For example, if the check amount is $105.00, you’ll want to write out “one hundred five dollars only.” Make sure the amount you put in the small box matches the amount you’ve described. This vital field confirms of the intended amount of the check and can also avoid tampering or fraud.

How to include cents on check

Writing cents on a check in words can be done in one of two ways. Let’s say the check is for $105.50. To show the cents value, you can write either “one hundred five dollars and fifty cents” or “one hundred five dollars and 50/100.”

Step 5: Add your signature

The signature line in the bottom-right is where you sign the check. The signature must match the name on the account that is paying the check. The name will be checked as verification when the payment is processed electronically.

Step 6 (Optional): Write a memo

The line for a memo can capture the purpose of the payment or include a personal note. All in all, a memo can be a helpful reminder of what a check is for, whether you obtain a carbon copy of the check or view the image in an online banking portals.

Tips for writing checks

• Keep blue or black pens handy: Writing in pen helps protect your check against tampering. Plus, ink from ball-point pens is less likely to smear. More importantly, a check written with markers, crayons, pencils or other ink colors may be rejected by a financial institution.
• Don’t sign a blank check: A check with only a signature enables the payee to fill out any amount they want. To protect your money, don’t sign a check until the dollar amount is filled out in numerals and words.
• Write in print instead of cursive: Writing check details in print helps make sure they are clearly legible and can avoid errors when the check is processed. You should still add your signature in cursive, however.
• Review for errors: Make sure you have checked key elements of the check before sending or handing it to someone. Confirm that the check amount is correct, the amount in words matches the amount in numbers, and the payee’s name is spelled correctly.

The process of voiding a check is simple: You write “VOID” across the face of the check in pen. Avoid covering the account number and routing number at the bottom edge of the check. You can safely dispose of the voided check by shredding it or using scissors to cut the paper into tiny pieces.

Yes, you can write a check to yourself. Instead of putting another payee’s name on the check, you write your own name. This used to be a common practice for transferring money between accounts or banks.
