‘Bharathanatyam’ movie review: A mildly humorous affair that does not hit any highs

Saiju kurup chose this movie to venture into film production, probably expecting the humour to carry the narrative, but there are not many laugh-out-loud moments.

The archetype of the all-sacrificing, long-suffering elder brother used to be an oft-repeated one in the Malayalam films of yesteryears. Mohanlal’s Balettan (2003) happens to be one of the extreme cases, with the character forced to bear the cross that his father handed over to him right before his death. He goes to great lengths to protect the secret, even at significant loss of face to himself.

Krishnadas Murali’s debut film Bharathanatyam riffs off (not rips off) on this peculiar situation, but it goes along an entirely different trajectory. For one, the father Bharathan (Sai Kumar), does not die and is left to rue his decision to confide a long-held secret of having another family to his son Sasi (Saiju Kurup).

The director, who has also written the film, is also aware of how people will easily connect the scenario to that in Balettan . So, to deny anyone the pleasure of pointing it out, there is one sequence where Sasi’s sister warns him “not to be too much of a Balettan!” While the film that it takes inspiration from was highly melodramatic in tone, Bharathanatyam attempts to keep the mood light and humorous even in situations which could lead to high drama.

Bharathan’s revelation leads to an interesting domestic situation involving two families and even lookalikes. Parallel to this happens the drama involving a temple committee of which Sasi is a part. A typical nosy soul in the committee suspects something amiss in the family and attempts to dig more. Bharathanatyam can be seen as a family’s desperate struggle to protect their reputation from nosy people in their neighbourhood, who are ready to even barge in to see what the family is hiding. More than the discomfort of the peculiar situation that they are caught in, it is the common fear of “what people would think?” that troubles them more.

But the film does not have the kind of writing or craft to use the potential of this compelling situation. It is saved from being totally forgettable by a few standout bits. The way events from Bharathan’s past are revealed in casual discussions or from random vacation photographs, much to his discomfort, is one of those. The other happens to be the evolution of the bond between the two families, especially between two young boys from either side.

Saiju Kurup chose the movie to venture into film production, probably expecting the humour to carry the film, but there are not many laugh out loud moments. Bharathanatyam is one of the movies which does not drive you away, but does not have enough to pull you in either.

Uriyadi Review - A gritty thriller and a rocking debut

There are no two ways about it. Irrespective of whether you enjoy/approve the content of Uriyadi this is a rocking debut from a filmmaker who knows exactly what he is doing.

A straightforward revenge thriller that plays out as a cat and mouse game between few engineering students and a caste based politician - goonda nexus.

One of the film's biggest strengths is the almost absent acting. It all seems so real that it only makes the proceedings more chilling. Mime Gopi is the only reasonably known face and he is very good. The director Vijay Kumar also debuting as an actor is adequate. So are the guys plays his best pals. While the film does not have anything to showcase their histrionics

they do seem to be at a certain ease before the camera. Suruli as the womanizing part-time student is so good that you might turn your face away the next time you see him somewhere.

The locations add to the authenticity of the film. The hostel, the college labs and the neighbourhood dhaba - all look so real. The hostel in particular being open on all sides with easy access to everyone keeps reminding of the impending danger.The action sequences are raw. But surprisingly they never make you squirm. The intensity is very much there but it is not in your face violence.The background score keeps the tense factor on without trying to overdo or make its presence felt. The credit reads that the score is by Vijay Kumar. The director himself? A solitary romantic track that plays out as a montage and the theme song 'Agnikunjondru' does make us take notice of Madras Cafe, the composing team.

Vijay Kumar:

This is a rocking debut of a filmmaker. Uriyadi has a very simple line as its core. But the film is packed with incidents. The conflict is opened right at the start of the film and there is literally no second wasted. You got to watch the film to realize this. The entire run-time in fact keeps the feel of a climax. The biggest surprise for me after watching the teaser and reading few reviews about the brutal violence was the way this was presented. The lead up to these violent scenes is actually what keeps your pulse rate high. The real action in itself is not shown in its ugly form. It is the after effects like a bruised face that drives home the message. Another noticeable aspect is that the tale is narrated without glamourising or glorifying anyone. You do root for the underdog but they are not shown as gullible youngsters. It is not that they react when pushed to a corner. They are quite hot headed and give things back, as and when someone meddles with them. This refrain from glorification continues till the end even after 'an eye for an eye' is achieved. The only glorification came from the claps of the audience as the film drew to a close.

Bottomline:

Time and again we do get reminded that small can sometimes be huge. Uriyadi is the most recent example.It is a gritty thriller that keeps you amazed.

തി യ്യറ്ററുകളില്‍ പൊട്ടിച്ചിരി സമ്മാനിച്ച അടി കപ്യാരെ കൂട്ടമണി എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ സംവിധായകന്‍ എ. ജെ വര്‍ഗീസ് ഒരുക്കുന്ന പുതിയ ചിത്രം എന്ന പേരുമായാണ് ഉറിയടി തിയ്യറ്ററുകളില്‍ എത്തിയത്. ആദ്യ ചിത്രത്തിലേതു പോലെ തന്നെ ആദ്യാവസാനം ചിരി പരത്തുന്ന ഒട്ടേറെ നിമിഷങ്ങള്‍ കോര്‍ത്തിണക്കിയാണ് സംവിധായകന്‍ ഉറിയടിയും ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഒരു പോലീസ് ക്വാര്‍ട്ടേഴ്‌സും അവിടെ ഓണാഘോഷപരിപാടിക്കിടെ നടക്കുന്ന മോഷണവുമാണ് ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രമേയം.

പരിപാടിക്കിടെ താമസക്കാരനായ എസ്.ഐ രവികുമാറിന്റെ വീട്ടില്‍ കള്ളന്‍ കയറുന്നു. മകളുടെ കല്യാണത്തിനായി രവികുമാര്‍ സൂക്ഷിച്ചു വെച്ചിരുന്ന സ്വര്‍ണം മോഷണം പോകുന്നു. ഇത്രയേറെ പോലീസിനെ കബളിപ്പിച്ചു മോഷണം നടത്തി എന്ന് പുറത്തറിഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന മാനകേട് ഭയന്നു മോഷണ വിവരം പുറത്തറിയിക്കാതിരുന്നെങ്കിലും സംഗതി പുറത്താവുന്നു. തുടര്‍ന്ന് അഭിമാനം സംരക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ പോലീസുകാര്‍ക്ക് നിരപരാധിയായ ഒരു 'പ്രതിയെ' പൊതുജനത്തിനു മുന്നിലേക്ക് ഇട്ടുകൊടുക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്നു. തുടര്‍ന്നുണ്ടാകുന്ന സംഭവങ്ങളലിലൂടെയാണ് കഥ വികസിക്കുന്നത്. പോലീസുകാരുടെ ജീവിതവും അവരുടെ പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങളും ഉറിയടിയില്‍ വിഷയമാകുന്നു.

പോലീസുകാരായി എത്തിയ സിദ്ധിഖ്‌, ഇന്ദ്രന്‍സ്, ബൈജു സന്തോഷ്, ആഭ്യന്തരമന്ത്രി ബലരാമനായി പ്രേംകുമാര്‍ എന്നിവര്‍ മികച്ച പ്രകടനമാണ് കാഴ്ച വെച്ചത്. അമ്പിളിയെന്ന അജു വര്‍ഗീസിന്റെ കഥാപാത്രം ചിരിക്കൊപ്പം ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. മാനസ രാധാകൃഷ്ണന്‍ ആണ് നായികയായി എത്തുന്നത്.

നിയമം തന്നെ അനീതി കാണിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ നിസ്സഹായരായി പോകുന്ന സാധാരണക്കാരുടെ അവസ്ഥ ചിത്രം ചര്‍ച്ച ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. കാതലായ ഒരു വിഷയത്തെ ഏറെ ഗൗരവകരമായ ഒരു പ്രമേയത്തെ നര്‍മ്മത്തിന്റെ മേമ്പൊടി ചേര്‍ത്ത് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ് ഉറിയടിയില്‍. ഇഷാന്‍ ദേവ് ഈണം നല്‍കിയ മനോഹരമായ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ ചിത്രത്തില്‍ ഉണ്ട്

'Uriyadi 2' review: Vijay Kumar seems to hold back his punches in this unfulfilling sequel

Few films in the history of Tamil cinema have been as unapologetic about their deployment of violence as the 2016 indie gem, Uriyadi. The ruthlessness in it is cathartic; it’s the channelling of all the helplessness arising from perennial suppression by the powerful.

You couldn’t but back those anonymous, unafraid students dealing the sort of payback many of us, in the face of injustice, have only dreamt of. The last three years, since the release of Uriyadi, have been quite eventful, politically speaking.

Closer home, among other developments, the Sterlite protests occurred, police opened fire on a crowd, an environmental activist has since gone missing… It’s not been rosy at all. So, there’s definitely reason for another Uriyadi, and this perhaps is the motivation behind Uriyadi 2.

There’s a chemical factory — Paksino Private Limited (Pak-Sino? Pakistan and China?) — whose wilful negligence results in environmental pollution, death and protests. Crooked politicians look to utilise it for personal growth, amoral policemen await instructions, and the public… they are the victims. It’s all familiar.

With such explosive material, with many years of accumulated frustration waiting to be channelised through revenge and cathartic violence… quite strangely, Vijay Kumar has made the film to fetch a U-certificate (because the production house, 2D Entertainment, is known for family-friendly films?). Mass murders happen, noxious gases asphyxiate children and pregnant women as they cough blood and die… it’s hardly child-relevant material. Why try to cater to them?

In Uriyadi, the key characters were unforgettable. Lenin, whose eyes breathed fire; his three friends, one of whom is referred to by his lack of height, the manipulative politician who can’t rise out of his godfather’s shadow, the two lecherous friends… In Uriyadi 2 though, I can barely remember anyone making a strong impression. Lenin’s here too, but he seems tired and broken, for some reason.

In one scene, he tries to explain why the public hardly cares about such tragedies: “The problem is, we speak all these chemical terms; we must simplify them to get their attention.” The irony is, Uriyadi 2, is a tad guilty of the same.

The gas leak in this film is a straightforward recreation of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, even if not in terms of scale. The leaked gas is the same: MIC (Methyl Isocyanate), and the process that results in the leak (water getting pumped in accidentally), is the same. There’s more. Much like in that case, here too, the company doesn’t reveal the nature of the gas for many days, causing many avoidable deaths and injuries.

In between all this tragedy, questions are also asked of god. At the beginning when Lenin prays, and his girlfriend wants to know what he’s praying for, he cheekily says, “For the existence of god.” Later, as people fall in large numbers, there’s a shot of a woman crying for assistance outside a temple. She doesn’t get it,  of course.

On evidence of his two films so far, it’s clear that Vijay Kumar’s a filmmaker who loves his details. This is why the scene leading up to the Paksino gas leak is as patiently executed. Pipes, meters, evaluations, machines, confused workers… you really get a sense of how it may have unravelled — if you’re into that sort of thing. You see this detailing in another scene too: the one concerning the final moments of Lenin’s friend. How he gets to a hospital, how the hospital strips him, how they attach the pulse oximeter and the chest leads, how they perform CPR… all of this helps make the loss feel real, the dead human, real.

I quite loved it, considering that deaths so often so easily become statistics after such events. This need for intimacy is also why a lengthy assassination attempt sequence is shot with cameras at shoulder-level, and up and close to the characters. When you are really into a film as you were with Uriyadi, this sort of realism really adds to the experience.

There are those little directorial touches too. A man has died, and ominous times are set to arrive. Vijay foreshadows this with an intimate aerial shot of the factory chimney, as he pans past its frightening void.

It reminded me of a lovely touch in Uriyadi, when he confirms the girl’s interest in Lenin, by showing the colourless liquid in the beaker he holds, turn pink. In Uriyadi 2 though, the romantic angle — the girl’s given a job though, thank god — doesn’t seem half as inspired, or half as well integrated. Individual moments in Uriyadi 2 seem memorable, but they don’t quite come together as they should.

There’s a caste angle to the girl’s relationship with Lenin, and her mother warns her of dire consequences. I loved that the girl throws her a steady stare of deep condescension, which says so much more than anything she could have put in words. There’s a powerful scene of a policemen beckoning Lenin disrespectfully, and he responds in kind. But there aren’t a whole lot of them.

What I loved consistently in this film though is Govind Vasantha’s music. His background score stands out, especially in one lengthy sequence leading up to the gas leak. The music — like in the Interstellar waves scene — rises to a crescendo, eventually drowning out all the voices.

The biggest problem in this film which painstakingly tries to set up the stakes, is that there’s no real memorable payback. The excitement at the end is too little, too fleeting.

There’s no question over the importance of an anti-establishment film such as this, but you can’t shake off the notion that Vijay Kumar has held back his punches here.

I don’t know if the pressure of securing a U-certificate hung over him, but hopefully, he won’t hold back with his next. That’s the Vijay Kumar we loved in Uriyadi.
