Mother Knows Best

Brooke Ventura

If someone had asked me what my highest ambition was as a twenty-year-old, I would have said, “To be a wife and mother.” I had it all planned out—I was going to be a flawless, well-heeled, stay-at-home mom of six who ran errands in my immaculate SUV, prepared glorious dinners, and enjoyed fancy date nights with my husband once a week.

Needless to say, it didn’t turn out that way. I wasn’t married until I was twenty-nine, and I have two children, not six. I run errands in a tidy sedan, my dinners are occasionally glorious, and my husband and I enjoy fancy date nights about every six months. I don’t mean that my domestic dreams were shattered, just that the reality of my married life turned out to be quite different from what I envisioned as a single woman. I didn’t realize just how difficult it would be to care for an energetic two-year-old after having woken up twice in the night to feed a newborn. I didn’t understand how much work it would be to prepare fresh vegetables for dinner, and I definitely underestimated the toll that doing all of that—all day, every day—would take on my physical and mental health.

It turns out that I’m not alone. There are a lot of women who have experienced the rude, comical, and heartwarming awakening that comes with motherhood, and they have done what our generation usually does in times of emotional upheaval: Post it on the Internet. In fact, young mothers have taken to the blogosphere in such numbers that, according to sociologist Emily Matchar, in 2013 they accounted for one-third of active bloggers.1 A 2017 report released by ConvertKit shows that those numbers have risen slightly, with 62 percent of bloggers as female and 52 percent of those bloggers as having children, with the primary motivation for starting the blog being a means of creative expression, and the primary blog category being “personal development.”2 In studying these trends, Matchar learned that the majority of these bloggers are college-educated, career-oriented women who gave up their careers in order to be stay-at-home mothers.

This was perplexing. Why would someone with an MBA from Wharton give up a lucrative job as a stockbroker to cook every single thing (from tortillas to yogurt to beef) from scratch? Who sets aside a PhD from Cornell to become a farmer in upstate New York? In her book Homeward Bound: Why Women are Embracing the New Domesticity , Emily Matchar identifies six reasons: (1) a rising sense of distrust toward government, corporations, and the food system; (2) concern for the environment; (3) the gloomy economy; (4) discontent with contemporary work culture; (5) the draw of hands-on work in a technology-driven world; and (6) an increasingly intensive standard of parenting. Since the purpose of this article is to discuss mommy-blogger culture and its reflection of a broader cultural nostalgia, my explanation of these reasons will be brief.

THE NEW DOMESTICITY

During the early 2000s, an aura of distrust began to settle over the United States. Books such as Fast Food Nation examined the food industry and its deleterious effects on the diet, economy, and well-being of America. The World Is Flat explained how globalization would change the economic and social systems of developed nations. This generated considerable anxiety among thoughtful citizens, so when the financial crisis of 2008 erupted (resulting in mass unemployment and a severe economic downturn), it was the last straw for Millennials—the food industry was killing them, the economy they were training to work for was changing right before their eyes, and the government bailed out the very banks that all but created the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. It seemed clear that the system was broken, so they took the only option available—go home and start from scratch.

Thus began what Matchar refers to as “the New Domesticity”—that is, the return of (primarily) women to home and hearth to reclaim the fine art of homemaking and create a lifestyle that’s more ecologically and personally sustainable—one where they wouldn’t be forced to choose between a fulfilling career and a stable, loving family. In many respects, it resembles the life of the June Cleaver/Betty Draper 1950s housewife, and these self-proclaimed “radical housewives” are fine with that. They’re proud of their ability to grow their own tomatoes, care for their own chickens, clean their homes with baking soda and vinegar, all the while wearing their six-month-old in a sling purchased from a fair-trade organization that supports mothers in developing nations.

But there’s one crucial difference Matchar says distinguishes them from their grand-mothers—the Internet. Unlike Betty Draper, these women don’t just sew their own baby clothes; they create a modestly lucrative media platform around those clothes (and other aspects of homemaking) that allows them to cultivate a community of like-minded and devoted followers. Unlike Depression-era homemakers, who sewed their own clothes because they didn’t have the money to buy them, these lifestyle bloggers sew their own clothes as part of a brand centered around their thrifty, creative, locally sourced organic lives. While 1930s housewives were socially praised for their industry and economy, successful Millennial bloggers receive direct, personal affirmation in the form of likes, comments, messages, and endorsement deals from companies looking to promote their products.

It doesn’t end there. Matchar writes that this devotion to a sustainable, natural lifestyle extends into how they raise their children, with many mothers forgoing traditional medicine and vaccination schedules for a natural homeopathic approach. A paper written by British doctor Andrew Wakefield in 1998 describing the connections between vaccinations and autism was incredibly influential among young, educated mothers. Despite the fact that Dr. Wakefield’s findings were not reproduced by subsequent research—and that his license was revoked by Britain’s General Medical Council—the damage was done, and the medical industry (lumped in with government, economy, and educational institutions) is still regarded with deep suspicion among young upper-middle-class mothers.3 As a result, some mommy bloggers’ “health insurance” takes the form of preventative care: buying organic clothes, BPA-free bottles, extensive breastfeeding, making their own baby food, and delaying or omitting vaccinations altogether. The popularity of The Attachment Parenting Book: A Commonsense Guide to Understanding and Nurturing Your Baby , a book by (Roman Catholic turned evangelical Christian turned Roman Catholic) William Sears, M.D., with his wife Martha Sears, R.N.—which promotes (among other things) extensive breastfeeding, bed sharing, and baby wearing—has established itself as a touchstone of twenty-first-century parenting philosophy, so much so that Matchar says it’s impossible to be a new parent without being influenced by it.

When these three elements—the allure of healthy, carefully prepared organic meals and hand-knitted sweaters; the rising levels of anxiety about the failures of previously trustworthy institutions; and the higher standard of parenting that has morphed from concern over our children’s welfare into a status symbol—are filtered through beautifully shot high-resolution photographs and the feeling of collegial intimacy, which characterizes many of the bloggers who dominate the industry, the result is a strong sense of confidence and trust in a romanticized image that has little basis in actual reality.

MOTHER KNOWS BEST

Matchar’s overall assessment of the mommy-blogger culture is critical but sympathetic. She understands the disillusionment and frustration her peers feel with the institutions that raised them. She herself is frustrated with corporate America’s refusal to implement a comprehensive leave plan that allows families with dependents to have social and job security. She readily acknowledges that many of these women wouldn’t be at home blogging if the workplace they trained to enter hadn’t effectively compelled them to choose between working seventy-hour weeks and having a family.

She willingly owns up to the many hours she’s spent clicking down the rabbit hole of beautiful lifestyle blogs, admiring the hand-built wainscoating, pots of homemade jam, and pictures of the dimple-cheeked baby gnawing on a BPA-free food-grade silicone teether. People are attracted to the New Domesticity because (surprise!) it’s attractive—a powerful and beautiful expression of the value of a life that balances thoughtful, meaningful engagement with your environment and a stable and healthy family.

New Domesticity is, at heart, a cry against a society that’s not working. A society that doesn’t offer safe-enough food, accessible health care, a reasonable level of environmental protections, any sort of rights for working parents.4

For Christian conservatives who have long been engaged in the culture wars, this seems like the win we’ve been waiting for—a popular censure of the feminist agenda to get women out of the home and into the workplace, combined with a resounding affirmation of the noble art of caring for a family. However, there are aspects of Matchar’s criticisms that Christians would do well to consider.

THE REALITY BEHIND THE FANTASY

Matchar is quick to emphasize the benefits of the mommy-blogging community: the ability to speak frankly with like-minded women who share similar experiences in navigating the waters of new motherhood, the appreciation and affirmation they receive from fellow homemakers on their newly reupholstered furniture or first attempt at canned salsa, or the instantaneous advice and suggestions they can receive on everything from teething pain to ADHD medication.

Young people are ready to push aside the 1980s- and 90s-style notion that domestic life is inherently uncool, the purview of the unintellectual, unambitious woman. We want to see images of women knitting or baking or raising kids not to please a husband or live up to some societal notion of proper femininity, but because they find it personally fulfilling.5

Many of the bloggers Matchar interviewed were honest about wanting to promote a certain lifestyle and showing the sunny side of stay-at-home life. The difficulty, she says, is that there’s much more behind the folksy wife-and-mom personalities than some highly paid bloggers let on. Ree Drummond (the woman behind the wildly popular The Pioneer Woman blog and Food Network show), wife of an Oklahoma cattle rancher and mother of four, is her prime example. Women the world over (myself included) have smiled at Drummond’s comic descriptions of cattle-branding, delighted their friends with dinners composed entirely of her recipes, and laughed at pictures of her husband’s chaps-clad bottom (she devoted an entire blogpost to it). The picture is one of a decidedly sweet, down-to- earth woman enjoying rustic life on her family’s ranch as she homeschools her children and makes meatloaf and steak sandwiches.

But Drummond’s upbringing bears little resemblance to the salt-of-the-earth Midwestern lifestyle she represents. She was raised in the affluent town of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, the daughter of a surgeon and a social worker, and graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in gerontology. Her husband’s family members are third-generation cattle ranchers who own 433,000 acres of land across Oklahoma and Kansas, and who receive $2 million a year for allowing the US Government to use some parcels as a sanctuary for wild horses and burros.6 Combine this with income from Drummond’s store (The Mercantile), her Food Network show, ad revenue, best-selling memoir, cookbooks, and Walmart kitchen line, and the picture that emerges isn’t one of a down-home country woman but of a wealthy and privileged celebrity. For all her quirky blogposts and self-deprecating humor, the self-described “desperate housewife” is actually an incredibly astute businesswoman whose highly produced and heavily edited world bears almost no resemblance to the ordinary life she projects—a fact that Matchar says goes either unnoticed or disregarded by fans.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION

I’m not saying that Drummond is a duplicitous con artist. She’s wealthy, to be sure, but she’s used a significant portion of that money to revitalize her small hometown of Pawhuska and pays each of her employees a living wage.7 The universal opinion (from The New Yorker profiler who interviewed her and the employees at her store) is that the kindly, unassuming personality on the pages of her blog closely reflects the character of the woman behind it.8 She’s selling a fantasy, but it’s the inspirational fantasy of Disneyland—a beautifully curated world that envelops the reader with the comforts and nostalgia of vintage Americana.

What I am saying is that while it is the purpose of the blog to entertain , and that the narrative of the blogger’s life is, of necessity, partially fantastic, ethical lines are uncomfortably blurred when the fantasy is literally sold as reality. When a blogger deliberately downplays her actual wealth and influence in order to maintain (and thereby capitalize on) her salt-of-the-earth persona, one questions the ethical probity of marketing oneself as “an ordinary housewife plowing through life in the country.” Matchar writes:

For bloggers, blogs are not necessarily just an outlet to vent or a source of community. Frequently, bloggers are deliberately painting a highly controlled picture of their lives in order to make money, sell products, or promote certain lifestyles or political agendas. Readers, who look to these blogs for community, are often getting an unintended dose of marketing and commercialism as well. But more worrisome than the semi-hidden advertising is the fact that, by painting idealized pictures of their “real lives” in order to make a living, bloggers are selling fantasy but calling it reality.9

There’s nothing exactly wrong with a blogger combining real life with a carefully curated image—provided that they’re not deliberately deceptive—but we must remember that this is relatively uncharted territory on the frontier of Internet culture, and so discernment and caution should be exercised.

Granted, in this Snapchat-filtered, Facebook world, it’s slightly petty to accuse someone of marketing the glossy version of themselves as their “authentic” self. Since when has anyone —actor, homemaker, public servant, student, or professional—not cared about presenting their best face to the world? It’s not artifice or duplicity to keep the nitty-gritty details about your personal life private; it’s tact. There are appropriate and inappropriate times and places to share our less-than-savory aspects with people. But when the glossy photographs are interpreted as the day-to-day reality, when the spheres of happy memory and actual history become indistinguishable, then we’ve succumbed to a false ideal that’s unhelpful and counterproductive. The polished image of the lovely young mother with three beautiful children and organized closets may entertain, inspire, and encourage—and that’s a good thing—but when we’re tempted to compare her image with our reality, then it’s important to bear in mind that the story we see isn’t the whole story.

It’s natural to yearn for “a better, simpler time,” to mourn for a way of life that seems to be disappearing, to want to preserve the best of our past as we continue into the future. But when we ignore or minimize the complexity of the truth for the nostalgia and romance of the fantasy, we are perpetuating a myth about the world we want, instead of engaging with the world we live in.

The Captive Reader

Mother knows best – edna ferber.

February 2, 2024 by Claire (The Captive Reader)

mother knows best essay

Coming to this some years later, when Ferber’s name is far from being on everyone’s lips, is no less enjoyable.  There is a reason she was successful then and why she continues to be worth reading now:  she is a polished, confident writer who knows exactly how to draw her readers in.  The bulk of these stories focus on ordinary working-class Americans – and even the exceptions are about workers who managed to pull themselves up (for better or worse) into a new realm.  Most of the characters feel like very real people, full of habits that annoy their families, resentment over their jobs, and dreams of something better or different.  This was compelling in 1927 and remains so in 2024.

I love Ferber for her humour but in this collection it appears in glimmers rather than overwhelming waves.  The title story indeed is a tragedy in miniature about a recently deceased stage star whose great success – and loneliness – are the result of a managing mama.  Happily, it was followed by one of my favourite stories, “Every Other Thursday”, about a young Finnish servant and the great excitements of her day off, when she can abandon the middle-class family she sullenly serves and escape to a little Finnish enclave in the city.  A chance to chat, to go to the sauna, to dress beautifully, and to be admired by a dashing fellow Finn – these are simple pleasures but crucial ones in an otherwise dully repetitive life.

I was unsettled by the melancholy “Holiday”, which reminds me of A Fortnight in September in some ways.  The Cowans – Pa, Ma and spinster daughter Carrie – leave Newark for a holiday in Atlantic City full of small, sad, and somewhat seedy pleasures.  In particular, Carrie’s longing for a bit of freedom and a touch of romance felt all to plausible, as did the sense of danger when a small reckless act finds her out of her depths.

In other stories, working girls aspire to better things before recognizing (with chagrin) the value of the hardworking boys they grew up with, elderly widows jaunt off to Europe together after feeling ignored by their families, a middle-aged couple leave their snug home and set off like gypsies in their car with no fixed direction, and, in my second favourite story (“Our Very Best People”), a young woman handles the loss of fortune and position with courage and the pioneer spirit while her twin sister does the opposite.

It’s not a very quotable book (I find short stories rarely are), but I did love this passage from “Our Very Best People” explaining the Tune twins and their very different inheritances:

An Eastern finishing school, followed by Vassar, had rarely turned out a more unfinished product than Hannah Tune, who was, she would explain to you, the elder of the Tune twins.  Hannah resembled her simple, straightforward, plain-featured mother, who had been the Kansas City heiress of the stockyards stock.  Hilda was undeniably her father’s daughter – authentic offspring of Rutger G. Tune, of the Massachusetts Tunes, who were born to be ancestors as some people are born singers, writers, drunkards.  A true Tune, posing for a casual snapshot, always emerged looking like a portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds.

I love Ferber as a novelist but it was as a short story writer that I first encountered her (she has an excellent story about a grandmother who goes to work at a munitions factory in the Virago collection Wave Me Goodbye ) and possibly still like her best.  I’ll just have to keep reading on through all her works to make a more thorough judgement – with pleasure!

I always neglect novelists’ short stories, don’t know why. I’ll certainly be hunting up this volume as I love Ferber’s work.

If you already enjoy Ferber, then I’m sure you’ll like her short stories!

Why Mom Knows Best, Essay Speech

yoricktrololo - / 2   Apr 16, 2012   #2 I think because the topic is "This I Believe," that it should also be your motif. That's what I have found most resonating about "This I Believe" speeches. For example, start the speech with your statement of belief: "This I believe; mothers always know best." And then end it that way as well: "These young children need individual affection and attention, all of which many of us have. This I believe." I also think that the speech is a bit repetitive. You keep stating how your mother is always there for you, but you never progress from that statement. Furthermore, try telling an actual story in your "My Experience" section. This is your chance to back up what you've been saying and give a specific example. Otherwise, I believe your speech is fairly strong. Oh! Being in a theatre class full of judgmental teenagers has taught me something I think you may benefit from; you look sillier when you don't try than when you do. GOOD LUCK!!! I hope this helped! :D

stn0795 4 / 11   Apr 17, 2012   #3 For your speech: you should try to prepare and practice to see whether you could cover what you wrote for within 2-3 minutes. Good luck!

Mother Knows Best

  • Read Time 4 mins

Without saying a word, my mother taught me a truth that has set me free.

I was a teenager when my 39-year-old, stay-at-home mom decided to become a nurse. She did not drive, and we lived on a lake in the country about fifteen miles from where her classes would be held. Always resourceful, she convinced her sister, who could drive, to become a nurse too. Thus, my aunt provided Mom’s transportation.

I’m told the sisters were a hit with their class, despite being nearly two decades older than everyone else. I can imagine my mother’s cheery personality adding laughter and enthusiasm to the classroom.

I was in eighth grade, my brother in fourth grade, and my sister in kindergarten when Mom’s nurses training began. It irritated me that she was no longer available 24/7 and that my siblings and I now had more chores around the house. But I also felt proud of her.

She’d be studying when the rest of us went to bed. And she’d rise at 4 a.m. to study, then make our school lunches and prepare our breakfast, before rushing out the door with her books to climb into my aunt’s car. After graduating at the top of her class, mother began working in the premature nursery of Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Women’s Lib and feminism weren’t familiar phrases at the time. And my dad, a hard-working laborer, was not expected to take on housework just because his wife had a job. So, Mom still performed all the traditional homemaking tasks while also working full-time. However, Dad did become her chauffeur to and from the hospital each day. That drive gave them both some much-needed time together.

Unlike TV moms, who often dispensed wisdom to their confused or discouraged children, my mother was way too busy to sit us down for some sage advice. Yet, I learned from her annual springtime ritual the most important lesson ever about work and my relationship to it.

When May arrived each year, she would approach her supervisor at the hospital and ask for a summer leave of absence. “My children are growing up so quickly,” she’d say, “and I want to spend the summer with them while I can.”

Her supervisor would explain that there was no way to grant my mother’s request. A three-month leave was totally out of the question. Within a day or so of being refused, Mom would write and deliver a two-week notice that she was quitting.

When we were finished with school, she was finished with work. She’d once again be our 24/7 mother, and we’d all enjoy summer together, swimming in the lake, visiting friends, and just plain having fun. We’d pick berries and she’d bake pies. We’d help her can tomatoes and peaches and green beans. She’d make strawberry jam.

When Dad got his two-week vacation, we’d all take off for the Smoky Mountains, or Mammoth Cave, or some other wonderful place, camping along the way and making family memories for a lifetime. In the fall, as we kids headed back to school, Mom, refreshed and renewed, would apply for work at the hospital and be immediately hired. She’d be back in the nursery enjoying the work she loved.

This yearly tradition continued throughout my and my siblings’ school years. Why the hospital never granted her request for leave or tried to negotiate a shorter leave of absence, I’ll never know. But as a family, we enjoyed summer vacation together. And I absorbed the truth that my employer does not own me; I’m not a slave to my job. I am free to walk away.

That freedom has served me well, enabling me to comfortably tolerate unpleasant but temporary situations at work, or giving me permission to quit when a job is taking the joy out of life. More than once, when hired for a new job or being promoted to a new position, I have negotiated a two-month rather than two-week yearly vacation.

Mom’s annual ritual taught me that while you can always earn money you can never earn more time, that life’s quality is more valuable than a paycheck, and when it comes to my working life, I’m the one in charge. These truths, taught without speaking a word, have blessed my life with uncommon freedom.

Love Against All Odds

I enjoyed your story, and it did resonate with me because my mom also worked; she was a schoolteacher. She chose the profession because she had summers off and felt it was the one profession where you could have a family and yet not miss out on precious time with one’s kids. Mom had been a Phi Beta Kappa at Duke. That kind of student nowadays would most likely go into a more demanding, prestigious, and better paying career than teaching, but I’m not sure if Mom came along today, she’d choose one of those jobs as summer vacation with us kids and her husband were worth more than money or status to her. Your story made me once again appreciate my late mother. Thank you.

I loved your comment, Erika! Our mothers knew the value of family, of relationships, and how quickly children grow up and leave home to find their own way in life. I’m glad my essay brought back memories of your own mother, and summer days spent together.

Mother Knows Best

Essay by Nicolas   •  January 8, 2012  •  Essay  •  364 Words (2 Pages)  •  2,538 Views

Essay Preview: Mother Knows Best

The world is made up of a variety of people with different looks, personalities, and way of dealing with life. Literature is one way people use to mirror lives of those around them and capture it in a way people will remember for years to come. No matter what story a person reads, it is always possible to find at least one characteristic that they identify within themselves. In different stories, the reader is able to find characteristics that not only identify within themselves, but also identify within other characters in separate stories. They may also find a character that seems similar, but is also different in many ways. In Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wall-paper" and Sherwood Anderson's "Mother," the characters of the Narrator and Elizabeth Willard live absolutely separate lives but compare in certain areas. Although the Narrator and Elizabeth Willard are similar in that they are both mothers, they differ in their marital happiness, ability to handle problems, and source of isolation.

The first way in which the Narrator differs from Elizabeth Willard is in her marital happiness. She loves her husband very much and has had a satisfying and happy marriage. He shows his love by taking care of her when she is sick. This is shown as the Narrator tells us "And dear John gathered me up in his arms, and just carried me upstairs and laid me on the bed, and sat by me and read to me till it tired my head. He said I was his darling and his comfort and all he had, and that I must take care of myself for his sake, and keep well" (Gilman 838). John cares so much for his wife that all he wants is for her to get better so they can be as happy as they once were. Even though the Narrator loves her husband so much and knows he loves her in return, she still finds it hard to talk to him about matters concerning her health. She states this in saying, "It is so hard to talk with John about my case, because he is so wise, and because he loves me so"...

She states this in saying, "It is so hard to talk with John about my case, because he is so wise, and because he loves me so" (Gilman 838). Again, his love is shown as the Narrator states, "He is very careful and loving, and hardly lets me stir without special direction" (Gilman 834). Through the entire story his love and devotion toward his wife is shown and it is easy to see that even through all the health problems and emotional distress, they will be there for each other until the very end of time. That is true love!

On the other hand, Elizabeth Willard's marriage is not as happy and charming is that of the Narrator from "The Yellow Wall-paper." Elizabeth and her husband, Tom, have a very unsatisfying, unloving relationship filled with bitterness and anger. Her feelings toward her husband are shown as George Willard, the narrator of the story, states "Although for years she had hated her husband, her hatred had always before been a quite impersonal thing. He had been merely a part of something else she hated" (Anderson 1217). Elizabeth's hate for her husband is not built directly on him. Due to other events and circumstances in her life, she has built up such anger that she directs that onto her husband. He becomes a scapegoat for her hatred.

The second difference between the Narrator and Elizabeth Willard has to do with their ability to handle problems. One way the Narrator deals with her situation is in the journal she keeps. She knows that the others do not approve of her writing down her thoughts, so she hides them. She believes she knows what will help herself to get better, but everyone else keeps telling her she is wrong. She states her feelings in saying,

Personally, I disagree with their ideas. Personally, I believe that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good. But what is one to do? I did write for a while in spite of them; but it does exhaust me a good deal- having to be so sly about it, or else meet with heavy opposition (Gilman 833).

In dealing with her sickness, she not only writes in her journal, but she shares her pain through tears. She doesn't want others to see her deep pain so she tries to hide it when others are around. "I cry at nothing, and cry most of them time. Of course I don't when John is here, or anybody else, but when I am alone. And I am alone a good deal just now" (Gilman 837). She realizes she is unhappy with her sickness and wants to express her pain through tears, but she does not want to face the opposing view on the situation which comes from her husband and others. Not only does she handle her problems through writing and crying, she also does it through violent thoughts toward herself. She is tempted to turn those thoughts into actions and take them out on herself. This is shown as she says, "I've got a rope up here that even Jennie did not find. If that woman does get out, and tries to get away, I can tie her! But I forgot I could not reach far without anything to stand on." She continues in saying, "I am getting angry enough to do something desperate. To jump out of the window would be admirable exercise, but the bars are too strong to even try" (Gilman 843). She starts out by using the woman in the wall-paper as an excuse for the rope in her room but it is soon shown that the rope would be used to harm herself and not someone else.

The Narrator may be able to handle her problems in keeping to herself or thinking of using violence against herself, but Elizabeth Willard's choice in handling her problems is in acts of violence toward other people, mostly being her husband. She has the desire to take out her anger on him by causing him physical pain. This is shown in the statement,

Going to a cloth bag that hung on a nail by the wall she took out a long pair of sewing scissors and held them in her hand like a dagger. "I will stab him," she said aloud. "He has chosen to be the voice of evil and I will kill him. When I have killed him something will snap within myself and I will die also. It will be a release for all of us" (Anderson 1217).

The anger she has harbored inside, for her husband, is ready to explode from within her. She can no longer hold it inside, but must express her anger by physically harming her husband, not only hurting him, but killing him. The hatred has reached its peak and cannot back down. She must do something to suppress the anger toward him and the only solution she can think of is to kill him and stop the emotional pain he has caused her.

The third difference between the Narrator and Elizabeth Willard

“Mother Knows Best” is Mother Gothel’s villain song, sung directly after Rapunzel asks to see the floating lights for her eighteenth birthday. This song showcases the manipulative tactics Mother Gothel uses to make Rapunzel feel that the only place where she is safe is high in the tower with her mother, though the audience knows Gothel’s sinister ulterior motives.

Unlike most of the songs in Tangled , which are based on ‘60s folk music, “Mother Knows Best” is made in stylized as a Broadway number. Composer Alan Menken said in an interview with Broadway World:

I wrote that song to appease the directors because they really wanted a musical theatre moment. So, I said, ‘OK!’ I thought it was going to be going a step too far, but it was able to hold in the score.

Yes, he has! He made a comedic tweet with a behind-the-scenes picture of Donna Murphy and Glenn Slater on Oct. 10, 2019.

In an interview with Tribute Movies , Murphy describes recording “Mother Knows Best” as a “magical moment”.

Just listening to the orchestration, before I even opened my mouth, I was weeping and it was telling me more about the character. That’s the best. I couldn’t wait to sing it. It’s also so juicy, acting wise. It’s not just a song that you sing pretty notes in – it’s a scene. I’d never had a chance to sing a new piece of Alan’s music. Little Shop was early in my career and I was like the second cover for Audrey and I went on once, but I loved it. To think that here I was, in a situation originating music in a film that would be seen by millions of people. That is just an amazing honor.

An Introduction to the Essay

The word Mother is a very pious word and whosoever is called by the name ‘Mother’ is a person who sacrifices and prioritizes her children over anything. Her whole Life revolves around the well-being of her child, their growth, their development, and their welfare. A Mother not just only gives birth to a child but she takes a Lifelong commitment to take care of her child.

The only unconditional love in the world is the mother's love. My mother is my inspiration, my superhero, my best friend, and my guiding light. My life would not have been beautiful without my mother. Through ups and downs and in every step of life, she holds my hand and supports and encourages me. No matter what happens, my mother is always there beside me- cheering me up and motivating me. All mothers in the world are great and so, we should not celebrate their contribution in our life on Mother's Day only, which is 10th May, but every day of the year and throughout their life. It is because no gesture of appreciation is ever enough when it comes to acknowledging our mother. Her selfless love and sacrifice are the precious of all gifts under the sun.

An Essay on Mothers

My Mother- The Multi-Tasker

Mothers play an important role in everyone’s Life since she acts as a Protector, a Friend, and Guide for Life. A Mother does everything selflessly for her child and without any condition. There the love of a Mother is known to be Unconditional.

The way she manages my family with utter dedication and devotion is inspiring. The relationship with my mother is something very hard to explain. I do not merely love her because she is my mother and we should respect our elders. I love her because she is my world and when I was not able to speak and communicate she took care of me, time and time again. The best part about my mother is that even though I have grown older she knows and understands my needs without me speaking a word. I learned kindness and love from her. She taught me no matter how bad a situation might get, only love can improve it in the most effective way. She has been the rock-solid pillar of my life and in every big moment of my life.

My Mother has constantly supported me throughout my entire Life, whenever I am in a danger or in a situation where I am stuck, she has always been there for me, protected me, and guided me. She has been my favorite teacher who has taught me about Life and the beauty of it. She is the essence of truthfulness, sincerity, and lots of love. The only person who holds our family together is my Mother. She cares for everyone in the house and for the ones in need outside the house as well. One of the most beautiful things that I learned from my mother is empathy. Be it strangers or animals, she treats everyone equally which makes her more amazing. Moreover, she taught me to not hurt anyone on purpose and help people whenever possible. Not only this but also she taught me to not differentiate among rich or poor, beautiful or ugly. She says that it is the heart of a person that makes them beautiful and rich and not temporary possessions.

My Mother is my constant source of encouragement, be it in Life or in school for studies. She has always inspired me to do other activities along with my studies. She has taught me to enjoy every aspect of Life and live Life to the fullest. She wants me to do those things in Life as well which she could not do or pursue. She is my backbone for everything. My mother has inspired me through her hard work and sacrifices. She taught me once never to get disheartened by failure and to keep challenging the failure with our honest effort. And one day, failure will pave the path to our success. The strength of facing hurdles and overcoming it is what I have learned from her.

Mothers have never-ending qualities even though they do not get much credit for their goodness and hard work. She binds everyone in the family and plays a very important part in everyone’s Life. Even when I do something wrong in Life, she scolds me but at the same time, she makes me understand and helps me to get out of the situation. She forgives me after every mistake but ensures that I’ve realized my mistake first. She is the most selfless human being I have ever encountered in my life till now.

My mother knows me in and out. Even if I am lying she catches me immediately and I start feeling guilty. We should never lie to our parents and especially, to our mother. They simply do not deserve it. Mothers spend a significant part of their lives making us capable of standing on our own feet. Sometimes, they have to sacrifice their own career and happiness for that. So a mother's trust should never be destroyed. And when it comes to my mother, I would not change a bit about her. She is the best chef, reading partner, and an independent working woman who can balance almost everything with utmost perfection. Even her imperfection makes me proud of her. Without my mother, I would never become a better human being. My Mother is my biggest strength and makes me, even more, stronger when I go through all my ups and downs in life. The best thing she possesses is her patience. The patience she has is difficult for anyone to have. She deals with every situation in the family, in my life, or even in her Life with so much patience because of the reason the family is bonded so strongly. It is the responsibility of every child to appreciate their Mothers and give them the love and respect that Mothers deserve.

Home is the ultimate destination for everyone. For some, it may mean a place of repose or leisure, but for those who have been exhausted by life's inequities and seek refuge from reality, home is a sanctuary that offers solace. The four walls of a home serve as confidants, buffers, and restorers of our tired souls. Home is a sacred space where love, healing, and escape reign supreme. In Amy Tan's Two Kinds, the generation gap and environmental barriers are just a few of the issues at play.

The difference in thoughts, traditions, and beliefs between two generations living in the same country complicates things, especially with Jing-mei's mother being the center of the household and ruling over her own home. Mothers are supposed to support their children's wants and be their protectors and confidants, but Jing-mei's mother is the opposite. Instead

of allowing Jing-mei to grow as she wants, her mother forces her to do things she dislikes for her own selfish motives and status among Chinese moms.

In her essay on the story, Piedmont-Marton highlights how the mother desires her daughter to become a prodigy, while Jing-Mei seeks to distance herself from her mother's preferences. Both characters ultimately fail to understand the future they hold. The mother aims to mold her daughter into a musical prodigy to compete with other women in their social circle, particularly Lindo Jong, whose daughter is acclaimed as "Chinatown's Littlest Chinese Chess Champion." (Piedmont-Marton, n.)

According to the essay, the mother believed that the social circle she belonged to required her to have a prodigy child, which put pressure on Jing-Mei. Although Jing-Mei initially enjoyed the training, she ultimately realize

she despised it and desired her own separate world. These lines suggest a misunderstanding and strain in the relationship between the mother and daughter.

The protagonist, Jing-mei, quickly creates a basic plan to combat her mother's forceful ways. She thinks to herself, "My thoughts were new and determined - or more accurately, they were filled with refusals. I refuse to be altered by her. I refuse to pretend to be someone I am not." (Piedmont-Marton, n.) The statement is enclosed with .

In spite of Jing-mei's efforts to please her mother, the latter fails to recognize her daughter's positive traits. Rather than accepting Jing-mei as she is, the mother continually criticizes her and manipulates her into pursuing activities she despises. This mistreatment prompts Jing-mei to resent her mother and purposefully thwart her desires, leading to a disastrous piano performance that results in the mother's disappointment. As a result, the mother's behavior falls far short of exemplary maternal conduct.

Being insensitive towards her daughter's needs and wants made Jing-mei's mother a selfish parent who did not consider her daughter's sacrifices. Even though the widening gap between them was a factor, the main reason for Jing-mei's bitterness and resentment stemmed from her mother's insistence on controlling her life. The lack of freedom to make her own choices and pursue her desires infuriated Jing-mei.

Gossiping Is Fun. It’s Natural. And These People Won’t Do It.

A photo illustration of a woman, in the foreground, with her head thrown back while, above her, another woman is speaking on a landline phone.

By Michal Leibowitz

Ms. Leibowitz is a staff editor in Opinion.

In its most recent survey on the topic, the polling giant YouGov found that half of Americans admit to having “spread a piece of gossip.” YouGov did not report that the other half of Americans are filthy little liars, but it probably could have.

Gossip — often defined as informal talk about people who are not present — is a universal feature of human culture. It’s also long been the target of passionate, widespread censure. “Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people,” says Leviticus 19:16. In “The Analects,” Confucius is reported to have said that “the gossip-monger is the outcast of virtue.” The Quran proscribes backbiting. In 2017, a neighborhood in the Philippines passed an ordinance against gossip , making it an offense punishable with a fine and an afternoon of picking up litter. Even in increasingly secular America, more than two-thirds of Americans believe gossiping is usually or always bad for society.

And yet … who doesn’t gossip? “Anyone who has obeyed nature by transmitting a piece of gossip experiences the explosive relief that accompanies the satisfying of a primary need,” wrote Primo Levi, the Italian Jewish writer and chemist. OK, sure, some of us don’t gossip, exactly, but we do vent. Or we get something off our chest. Some of us gossip only to our spouses, or only to our mothers, only about our mothers. Some of us spill the tea gleefully and at every opportunity. Some of us do it only when gossip is prefaced with a, “Now, you know I don’t like to talk bad about anybody.” But a key part of being human, a social animal, is talking about others in one form or another.

Except there are people out there who don’t obey nature, who try their best to deny themselves the satisfaction of that primary need, even in a world where the word “gossip” is associated more with a guilty pleasure than a sin.

I spoke with nearly a dozen of these people, whom I’ll call abstainers. The people I spoke with were almost entirely women. I found them through friends, through articles they’d written about gossip, through a Facebook group for Bay Area women. Different things motivated them. For some it was religion or karma. Many were inspired by Don Miguel Ruiz’s self-help book “The Four Agreements,” which preaches the importance of being “ impeccable with your word .” One young woman had been motivated to examine her own speech after becoming the subject of hostile office rumors.

No one I spoke with claimed to be a perfect exemplar of pure speech, but all of them took it seriously. I sought out the abstainers in the hopes of understanding why these people would deny themselves what seemed to be a natural expression of human sociality. Also, I hoped to get a sense of how this choice affected their lives and their relationships. What were they getting out of it? I was curious, in other words, if they could be on to something.
