You should be able to create tasks, set deadlines and assign them to yourself and others. Additionally, you should have the option to view all your upcoming tasks in a dashboard or another centralized place, and set up alerts and notifications when certain actions take place. Ideally, you should also be able to create subtasks and task dependencies to keep everything organized.

For mid-sized businesses: Collaboration for a larger team, automations, cost, file management and storage, integrations
If you’re working with a large team but looking to keep project management costs at a minimum, Trello, Wrike, or ClickUp are likely your best options. All three of these free project management solutions offer access to unlimited users, though some other features may be limited. They also offer some automations for free, which can allow you to streamline parts of your workflow.
For enterprises: Customizability, security, customer support, reporting
If you want free project management software but aren’t willing to sacrifice built-in reporting and analytics, ClickUp or Jira are your best options. These tools include some amount of native reporting and/or dashboarding capabilities in their free plan, whereas most other free solutions only have them as third-party integrations.
Other decision-making factors when selecting free project management software may include general ease of use. While setting your top priorities for a free project management solution, be sure to include a variety of stakeholders in the process so you can select the tool that best fits your organization’s diverse needs.

As an individual PM I prefer to be sure I will have my software when I need it.
MS Project has a license … Most of the good PM tools I’ve found are subscription-based now. There’s an advantage to that, though, which is that you don’t have to pay for new software upgrades.
Check out Project Insight and include it in your list! I have nothing but good things to say about them and I’m sure others may love it too!

Recommending Amazing Marvin for personal project management! It’s extremely powerful and on almost all platforms but somehow little known. The downside is that it’s not yet for teams and has a bit of a learning curve.
Looks like you messed up the subtitles of the software listings. Subtitle No.2 (“A Great Jack of All (Project Management) Trades”) obviously belongs to listing No.1 (Monday.com), Subtitle No.3 (“Great Project Management Features and Free Plan”) to listing No.2 (Asana) etc. Otherwise, great overview article.
You rate ClickUp’s security as excellent. I’ve been a “power user” (their label) for several years and have been very happy for the most part. However, I’ve recently become aware of a security flaw.
Essentially, all attachments have a publicly accessible link. Even if you have access to advanced permissions (not sure if these are only available on a paid plan — I’m on the business plan) and set attachments to private by default, their version of “private” is loose at best.
Here’s the language from that setting: “Private attachments: When enabled, attachment links will automatically expire one hour after the link is generated. New links are generated when a task is opened or when exporting. Setting attachments as private only applies to new attachments added after the feature has been turned on.”
For anyone who manages any sort of confidential data, either internally or for clients, this is something to consider. If it’s not a worry, then still a good tool.
