Engineering Management

The purpose of the master’s degree in engineering management is to introduce the graduate with two or more years of engineering experience and who is interested in a career in management to the foundations of management knowledge and skills. The program is designed for engineers of all disciplines who are currently, or aspire to be, team or project leaders, section leaders or managers. These engineers recognize that management is a distinct profession and that when the necessary skills are mastered it can lead to significant improvements in the performance of an organization.

The program begins with a series of compulsory courses in engineering management, innovation, finance and accounting and continues with a series of electives. Students finish with a compulsory major consulting project (MCP). The choice of electives and MCP topic allows students to prepare for roles such as operations manager, systems manager, IT project manager, product manager and technology entrepreneur.

Engineering management (also known as management sciences) is the application of engineering principles to the planning and operational management of industrial and manufacturing operations. It is a broad term that can be used in each engineering subdiscipline; eg. construction management, manufacturing management, mechatronics management, etc. Most engineering managers focus on product development, materials management, production processes, and workforce reliability.

Engineering management is similar to industrial engineering. In essence, an engineering management program is a technical version of an MBA.

PhD Program

The PhD program prepares candidates for a career in engineering teaching, research, or consulting. The program offers opportunities for advanced research in the areas of Mechanical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Computer Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Engineering Systems and Computing, and Water Resources Engineering. The PhD program is available in full-time as well as part-time studies. The program provides advanced training in the engineering sciences and research methodology through a combination of course work, independent research, a qualifying examination, and the production and defence of a research dissertation.

Degree Requirements

The prescribed program of study must consist of no fewer than 2.0 credits in addition to those taken as part of the MASc degree. At least 1.0 of the credits must be engineering graduate courses. Of the remaining 1.0 credits, 0.5 credits must be at the graduate level, and the other 0.5 credits may be graduate credits or senior undergraduate engineering credits. Depending on the student's background, the advisory committee may specify more than 2.0 credits, including undergraduate make-up courses. If make-up courses are deemed necessary, they will be considered additional courses.

PhD Qualifying Examination

The PhD Qualifying Examination should be no later than the student's fifth registered semester (full-time students).  The examination is held after the student has completed the required coursework. 

At that time the Advisory Committee will request the SOE Associate Director, Graduate Studies to schedule the examination by using the  School of Engineering Qualifying Examination Request Form .  At the same time the Advisory Committee will submit an evaluation of the student’s coursework and of his/her potential as a researcher. The Associate Director, Graduate Studies will select the Examination Committee as outlined in the  Graduate Calendar .

The examination includes written and oral components and is normally completed within a two-week period.  The written part consists of four examinations, each 90 minutes in length, and is to be completed within two consecutive days.  The oral examination will follow one week later and will not exceed 3 hours in length.   

PhD Final Examination

Candidates for the PhD Degree must submit a thesis on research of an approved topic. The thesis is expected to contribute significantly to knowledge in the field, and the candidate must explain this contribution. The thesis must demonstrate mature scholarship and critical judgement and be sufficiently meritorious to warrant publication in reputable scholarly journals in the field. The SOE Associate Director, Graduate Studies will arrange for an Examination Committee as outlined in the  Graduate Calendar . The duration of the examination will not exceed 3.5 hours and will follow the format outlined in the  School of Engineering Guidelines for Oral Examination of Thesis .

Collaborative International Development Studies (IDS) Designation

Students in the  Environmental Engineering and Water Resources Engineering  fields can choose to combine their PhD with an IDS designation (PhD.ENGG + IDEV). The collaborative IDS specialization provides an opportunity for advanced students to engage with interdisciplinary development theories and to conduct research on international development. Completion of the IDS program adds the designation "International Development Studies” to the PhD degree. This designation provides the necessary disciplinary qualifications for the academic job market as well as the interdisciplinary breadth required for development policy and practice.  

Students complete requirements for the departmental degree as well as the IDS components which consist of two core courses:

  • IDEV*6800 [0.50] Theories and Debates in Development
  • IDEV*6850 [0.50] Development Research and Practice

Students must obtain a minimum final grade of 75% in each of the two IDS PhD core courses to remain in the IDS collaborative specialization.

Expected duration

The mechanical engineering department is home to several exceptionally equipped research laboratories, including: applied mechanics and design laboratories, materials science and engineering laboratories, manufacturing and production laboratories, robotics laboratories, thermo-fluids and energy laboratories.

Our graduate students have access to various state-of-the-art research facilities with strong connections to the industry and the research programs are led by well-established professors and adjunct professors.

Aside from excellent research experience, we offer a program that engages our graduate students as members of national and international professional societies including the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineering (CSME) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME). We are proud of our long history of graduate programs and the fact that our past graduate students are in high demand by industry, research laboratories and universities.

As a graduate student, you will have opportunities to apply for a variety of financial supports, including the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Postgraduate Fellowships, various Faculty of Graduate Studies Scholarships and research assistantships. There are also teaching assistant positions budgeted and available in the department to accommodate those students wishing to assist academics in teaching. Partial travel awards are available from various sources for graduate students to attend conferences.

The engineering complex.

Expected duration: 4 years

Tuition and fees:  Tuition fees are charged for terms one and two and terms four and five. A continuing fee is paid for term three, term six and each subsequent term. (Refer to Graduate tuition and fees .)

The PhD in Mechanical Engineering consists of coursework and a substantial research component. A minimum of 12 credit hours at the 7000- level or higher is required, and students must present, submit and defend a comprehensive thesis that constitutes a distinct contribution to knowledge in the field of study.

Research areas

Fluid mechanics.

Active research in this area is performed in turbulence, computational fluid dynamics, multiphase flow with droplets and engineering calculations of fluid flow. Droplets vaporization and burning under turbulent atmospheric as well as high-pressure and temperature flow conditions, premixed and non-premixed swirling and non-swirling turbulent flames, liquid jet break-up and automizaton turbulent measurement and modelling, underwater kinetic turbines.

Thermal Sciences

Concerned with the application of heat and work to engineering problems. Active research is performed in two phase flow, pool boiling simulation, enhanced heat transfer, solid-liquid phase change, entropy analysis/optimization, combined heat transfer and heat transfer in porous media, acoustic wave propagation and supercritical flow stability, ocean hydrothermal energy and minerals research, super-critical properties of ocean hydrothermal fluids, runout table cooling in the steel processing industries.  

Material Science and Engineering

Concerned with the behaviour of engineering materials. Active research is focused on deformation studies, joining of aerospace materials, acoustic emission, solidification and diffusion in microgravity, phase transformation in solids, wear and wear protection, processing of polymer composites, durability and interfaces in polymer composites.

Applied Mechanics and Design

Concerned with the analysis and conception of machine and structural components. Active research is performed in biomechanics, solid mechanics, fracture mechanics, fatigue analysis, experimental stress analysis, vibrations and acoustics, kinematics and dynamics of linkage and mechanisms and computer aided design.

Manufacturing and Production

Concerned with analysis, design and operation of automated and feedback control systems. Active research is conducted in robotics, sensor technology, system integration, automatic controls, information systems, human-machine control systems, fluid power systems, teleoperation, virtual design and manufacturing, web-based manufacturing systems. Planning, design and operation of production using queuing theory, networks, scheduling, facilities planning and inventory planning models are also other areas of research.

To qualify for admission to the PhD in Mechanical Engineering program, you must normally have completed a master's-level degree in Engineering.

Master’s students making exceptional progress while enrolled in their program may be transferred to the PhD program upon the consent of the department head based on recommendations from the student’s advisor and an appointed selection committee who investigate the student’s qualifications and suitability for PhD study.

In addition to the admission requirements described here, all applicants must meet the minimum admission and English language proficiency requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies .

The mechanical engineering PhD program accepts applications for Fall, Winter and Summer admission. Applications are submitted online and must include the following before they will be reviewed by the admissions committee:

  • $100 application fee (non-refundable)
  • Uploaded copies of transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Proof of English language proficiency , if required
  • The name of your confirmed advisor

Please note that your proposed advisor must hold a PhD or equivalent and be a member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (typically includes academic staff holding a rank of assistant professor or above).

Program overview

The PhD in Building Engineering is the highest-level degree offered in the field and allows students to gain expertise through intensive research. You will increase your analytical knowledge through a combination of specialized courses and a research thesis completed under the supervision of one of our faculty members. Some examples of subfields studied include building science, construction management, energy efficiency and rehabilitation of urban infrastructures. Where possible, research related to the industry is encouraged.

Admission requirements

Admission requirements.

Admission on a full-time basis

  • Master’s degree or equivalent with high standing in engineering or computer science, or in a cognate discipline.
  • Holders of a bachelor’s degree will, in general, be considered for admission to a master’s program only. After completion of a minimum of one term of full-time study in the Master's degree, they may, upon application, be recommended by the Department and approved by the GCS Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies for admission to a PhD program.

Admission on a part-time basis

  • Master’s degree with high standing in engineering, computer science or a cognate discipline.

Proficiency in English

Proficiency in English. Applicants whose primary language is not English must demonstrate that their knowledge of English is sufficient to pursue graduate studies in their chosen field. Please refer to the English language proficiency page for further information on requirements and exemptions .

Awards and funding

Funding packages are generally available for students in thesis-based programs. They come in the form of awards, teaching and research assistantships are offered at the time of admission to most students to allow them to focus on their research and studies. Research and thesis-based students are automatically considered for all entrance graduate awards when they apply to Concordia, provided they meet eligibility criteria. No separate application is required.

The Quebec and Canadian governments offer a number of competitive graduate scholarships. We encourage you to apply for these awards at the same time you are preparing your application.

The Master of Engineering Management (MEngM) program allows students to study topics in planning, allocating resources, and directing and controlling activities that have an engineering or technological component. Students will also learn to apply engineering principles in organizing and directing technical projects and how to manage the people within them.

The MEngM program provides courses in the areas of engineering project management, production planning and operations management, energy systems management, mathematical modelling and optimization (as they pertain to complex engineering systems), quality control, health and safety, and applied risk analysis.

  • Hold a four-year honours undergraduate engineering degree in a relevant field from an accredited engineering program at a Canadian university, or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum overall academic standing of a B (GPA: 3.0 on a 4.3 scale or 73 to 76 per cent), with a minimum B in the last two full-time years (four semesters) of undergraduate work or equivalent.

The Engineering Management (MEngM) program is an extremely competitive program; a program for which the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of seats available for each intake. The average GPA for those applicants admitted generally exceeds our admission requirements, however, meeting or exceeding admissions requirements does not guarantee admission.

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the natural and built environment. It is a very broad field made up of several sub-disciplines such as environmental engineering, construction engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydrotechnical engineering, materials engineering, structural engineering, and transportation engineering. Many of the sub-disciplines of civil engineering are themselves very broad and are made up of further distinguishable sub-disciplines. For example, hydrotechnical engineering includes water resources engineering, offshore engineering and coastal engineering.

Admission information & requirements, 1) check eligibility, minimum academic requirements.

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies establishes the minimum admission requirements common to all applicants, usually a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC). The graduate program that you are applying to may have additional requirements. Please review the specific requirements for applicants with credentials from institutions in:

  • Canada or the United States
  • International countries other than the United States

Each program may set higher academic minimum requirements. Please review the program website carefully to understand the program requirements. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission as it is a competitive process.

English Language Test

Applicants from a university outside Canada in which English is not the primary language of instruction must provide results of an English language proficiency examination as part of their application. Tests must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time of submission of your application.

Minimum requirements for the two most common English language proficiency tests to apply to this program are listed below:

All applicants have to submit transcripts from all past post-secondary study. Document submission requirements depend on whether your institution of study is within Canada or outside of Canada.

Letters of Reference

A minimum of three references are required for application to graduate programs at UBC. References should be requested from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications.

Statement of Interest

Many programs require a statement of interest , sometimes called a "statement of intent", "description of research interests" or something similar.

  • Supervision

Students in research-based programs usually require a faculty member to function as their thesis supervisor. Please follow the instructions provided by each program whether applicants should contact faculty members.

Financial Support

Applicants to UBC have access to a variety of funding options, including merit-based (i.e. based on your academic performance) and need-based (i.e. based on your financial situation) opportunities.

Program Funding Packages

From September 2024 all full-time students in UBC-Vancouver PhD programs will be provided with a funding package of at least $24,000 for each of the first four years of their PhD. The funding package may consist of any combination of internal or external awards, teaching-related work, research assistantships, and graduate academic assistantships. Please note that many graduate programs provide funding packages that are substantially greater than $24,000 per year. Please check with your prospective graduate program for specific details of the funding provided to its PhD students.

Average Funding

  • 36 students received Teaching Assistantships. Average TA funding based on 36 students was $5,079.
  • 45 students received Research Assistantships. Average RA funding based on 45 students was $15,880.
  • 7 students received Academic Assistantships. Average AA funding based on 7 students was $3,069.
  • 52 students received internal awards. Average internal award funding based on 52 students was $11,568.
  • 1 student received external awards valued at $21,000.

Scholarships & awards (merit-based funding)

All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA)

Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their supervision. The duties constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is considered a form of fellowship for a period of graduate study and is therefore not covered by a collective agreement. Stipends vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)

Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union .

Graduate Academic Assistantships (GAA)

Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.

Financial aid (need-based funding)

Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans .

All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.

Foreign government scholarships

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.

Working while studying

The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.

International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.

A good starting point to explore student jobs is the UBC Work Learn program or a Co-Op placement .

Tax credits and RRSP withdrawals

Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.

Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

He employed statistical and machine learning methods to improve the accuracy of regional earthquake-induced damage and economic loss estimates.
2024 Dr. Azimi developed an integrated robotic system for advanced vision-based structural health monitoring. He introduced high-resolution image and point cloud segmentation methods and leveraged large language models for human-robot interactions.
2024 Dr. Everard examined three natural convective flows, showing that ice onset near lake shores is delayed due to horizontal convective processes, that a temperature-dependent viscosity fundamentally changes boundary layer free convection dynamics, and that turbulence in organised canopies can be better described using a new approximation method.
2024 Dr. Valverde developed a methodology using X-ray micro-computed tomography to characterize silt-size soil particles and their spatial arrangement at the micro-scale. The findings lay the groundwork for refining geotechnical engineering designs by considering the influence of micro-level particle organization on the macro behavior of silty soils.
2024 Dr. Kakoty investigated amplification effects of earthquake shaking in Metro Vancouver due to deep sedimentary basins and collapse risk of older concrete buildings in Vancouver, which have implications in future seismic policy of the city.
2024 Dr. Gill examined the safety concerns related to pedestrian interactions with other road users. He found that people perceive pedestrian interactions with bicycles to be most safe, less so with cars, and least safe with self-driving vehicles. His work provides guidelines to ensure pedestrian-friendly introduction of self-driving vehicles.
2024 Dr. Reyes assessed the capabilities of soil constitutive models for predicting seismic liquefaction-induced displacements. He enhanced them for the simulation of undrained cyclic shearing under a wide range of initial and loading conditions. His research contributes to the field of performance-based earthquake engineering involving liquefaction.
2023 Dr. Bhonde investigated the potential of Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools to enhance design processes in building construction projects. His study provides practical recommendations for improving communication, efficiency, and collaboration among project stakeholders in the construction industry.
2023 Dr. Yirgu studied departure airport choices and their emissions implications. He spatially showed how airports differ in attracting passengers, and determined that aviation emissions cannot be directly reduced through higher airfares. His work improves air service planning and our understanding of price-based environmental policies on aviation.
2023 Dr. Courteau-Godmaire advanced simulations used in composites manufacturing. These structures begin as soft stacks of carbon fibre sheets. When heat and pressure are applied, they solidify, but can also wrinkle. His mechanistic model captures the slippery behavior of these layers, streamlining simulations for better design.

Environmental Engineering

Our program is focused on innovative research geared towards developing new technologies and practices that ensure we have clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, clean soil to grow our crops and clean energy to sustain our society. Our goal is to reduce the impact of our society on our environment.  Our programs are offered through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Environmental Engineering which allows our graduate students to take courses at both Carleton and the University of Ottawa. Learn more about Ottawa-Carleton Joint Institutes .

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering guarantee a Minimum Doctoral Funding of $35,000/year to successful domestic doctoral candidates. Applicants are encouraged to discuss the exact level and the details of their funding package with potential supervisors as early as possible during the application process. Note that the actual funding level can be higher than the above-mentioned Minimum Doctoral Funding amount if the student receives external awards or higher Research Assistantship.
