Homework assignments are always a drag, and this week's is no different. The teacher assigns his class projects on gravity, due Friday. Accompanied by a reading of the comedically caustic poem "Homework! Oh, Homework!" by Jack Prelutsky, the kids head out to construct their experiments with watermelons, eggs, ramps and bicycles, all of which they document and analyze using educational apps for the 9.7-inch Apple iPad. After marking up their final observations with the Apple Pencil, these students are ready to present their Newtonian models of orbit, velocity and force in class on Friday. And, during experimentation time, they even got to jump on a trampoline covered with water balloons! Maybe not all homework is so bad after all.

An iPad Turns Boring Old Homework Into an Irresistible Adventure in Apple's Latest Ad

A forward-thinking spot that's also deeply nostalgic.

Following its release of a new, more affordable and Pencil-friendly iPad,  and a bunch of snazzy education tools,  now Apple has released “Homework.”

The two-minute-plus spot feels at once nostalgic and idealistically rooted to the present. In it, narrator Mark Fenske solemnly reads Jack Prelutsky’s classic poem “Homework! Oh, Homework!” while a classroom embarks on the week’s assignment—exploring the concept of gravity.

A few things before we roll to the spot. We’d never treat an iPad like that, even at its somewhat-more-reasonable “starting from $329” price point.

[Tech Ad-Ons] Apple iPad ad: Them Homework Feels… Not!

Introducing the new age of homework.

In its first media event of the year, Apple launched a new 9.7-inch iPad with Apple Pencil support at an affordable price targeted at students. The company has priced the device at USD 299 for students and teachers, while everyone else would have to shell out USD 329 for the device. And with new iPads come new ads – following the launch, the Cupertino tech giant has also released an ad for the new iPad called “Homework.” The aim: to make you believe that homework can actually come without blues.

Lengthy, but definitely not boring

“Homework” is a two-minute-twenty-one-second ad that starts with a teacher asking his students to settle down. He then picks five kids, Ivy, Michael, Ryan, Sally, and Thomas, and calls them Group Three. The teacher then drops a book on the floor and tells these students that their homework is to explore gravity.

Right after this, the school bell rings. As the students start to leave, the teacher reminds them that the project is due on Friday and asks them not to forget their “homework.”

One of the kids then scribbles “Gravity” on her iPad with the Apple Pencil and flips the cover to close it. Two other students then go to a grocery store and buy a watermelon and an egg. All five kids then go to a small bridge, from where two of them throw the egg and the watermelon down while the other three set the iPad on the ground with the camera on to record the phenomenon.

After one of the kids licks bits of scattered watermelon off the iPad, the group then reviews the video and ticks off the egg and watermelon box.

The students then ride to another location on their bicycles, where they draw a picture on the iPad using the Apple Pencil and then recreate the same drawing in real life and record a video of it using the iPad. And then again use the device to review the video.

Continuing its experiments, the group throws a bike down the hill and a mattress from the balcony and records it all on the device. One of the kids uses augmented reality to see how the Moon revolves around the Earth right in her bedroom. The group then hangs different objects, and even group meme bears upside down in one of the students’ garages, right when her dad suddenly drives in his car.

One of the kids then swings around in a tire swing while the others try to hit him with a basketball. Another kid draws a diagram of the Earth and the Moon on her iPad. The group then takes a leaf blower and blows it in each other’s faces. They use a shopping cart, a tire swing, and a trampoline with water balloons on it, and they record it all with the iPad.

They then edit the whole video and the project on the iPad itself. When they go back to school , the teacher calls for Group Three. All five students go in front of the class, and as the lights dim, the iPad’s screen gets connected to the projector, and all of them look at the iPad with their projects cover page on the screen behind them. The ad ends with Apple’s logo.

The ad has “Homework! Oh, Homework,” a poem by Jack Prelutsky, in the background throughout, with a lot of ambient sounds and a bit of background music.

Homework never looked this cool

We have all hated homework. In school and college days, there were always some projects or assignments that were due. But it seems like the group of kids in this ad did not have any problem with it at all.

In the past, we have appreciated Apple’s ads for being short, simple, and straightforward. Most of these ads were to the point and highlighted the USP of the product. This one, however, is nothing like those ads. It is lengthy, builds a narrative, and brings the product in now and then.

That said, all of this does not really make “Homework” a bad ad.

One of the best things about this ad is the fact that even though it is a gadget ad, Apple has done a great job in making sure that the product blends in and does not rule the life of the audience. And because the audience is relatively younger here, we love how the company has kept the ad beyond the four walls of a room which is generally how people see a gadget when it enters in the life of students or teenagers.

The ad is not heavy on the head, and all the things that the students are doing in the ad actually would make you want to sit and see the ad and not press the “Skip the ad” icon. We love how easily and subtly the ad shows how the iPad can fill in all the gaps in a student’s life. It highlights how the device is extremely portable and is nothing less than a computing powerhouse.

The features of the iPad are highlighted well. The ad pretty much explains how you can use the camera on the iPad, how the multi-screen feature can be used, how videos can be edited, documents can be created, and how even augmented reality can work on it. Not just that, we also appreciate how the ad highlights the functionality of the Apple Pencil, and while many (including us) may disagree that an Apple Pencil is a must-have with the iPad, we think Apple has not left a single stone unturned to make sure people understand the functionality of its stylus as well. And although the ad is lengthy, Apple has a shorter version of it, and we think the company can cut it even shorter. The beauty of the ad is such that it would still make perfect sense.

Apple has also been very specific about what it puts as the background music in an ad, and it is mostly songs by various artists, but this time the company has picked the perfect poem for the ad. The poem “Homework! Oh, Homework” poem by Jack Prelutsky actually goes very well with the ad. The poem, which is pretty anti-homework, sits unusually well with the ad in which students are actually enjoying it. All thanks to the iPad.

Makes us wish we had an iPad in school

Apple’s new iPad ad is lengthy and is definitely not to the point, but we think that is exactly what makes it beautiful. The narrative and the storyline of the ad actually make you follow the ad, and the fact that the company has balanced the information with entertainment here also is another positive in the Cupertino tech giant’s ad bag. Yes, we know things do not ever get this exciting while doing homework, but the fact that it makes us believe that it CAN happen is what really hits the home run for us.

And we do not know if it was actually intentional, but the ad highlights a number of features that actually are missing from the iPad’s biggest rival in the education market, the Chromebook – video recording and editing, high-quality stylus support, AR, and so on. And, of course, all of it is so simple to use that even a group of kids can do it without any adult supervision (yes, we noticed that!).

We did not enjoy doing homework during our school time. But after watching the ad, we think we might know one of the reasons why it was never fun. Perhaps, perhaps, it was because we never had an iPad. Duh! #ThemFeels

Worth the money

I have really enjoyed being able to study on the go. I listen while cleaning, driving and more. However, I wish there was a way to listen without my phone screen being on, I wish that I could leave the app and come back where I left off, but the section within the chapter restarts. I wish I knew sooner that retaking the practice exam gives new questions, I thought it was like the quizzes that repeat the same questions..and I’m doing US history 2 and one of the lecturers sounds as though she has a speech impediment which I’m not judging but makes it difficult to understand what she’s trying to say.

They don’t care about feedback—many mistakes!

They make it super HARD to give feedback. There are many mistakes in the Spanish 145, 147 practice tests, but they make it nearly impossible to get help. Can’t even discuss with anyone! One example: “Which question word would you use to find out in what year Picasso painted a painting?” Obviously, it would be “¿En QUE año”, but they marked it wrong saying it was “CUANDO”…and it’s nearly impossible to send that in to them. They should make it simple; why am I paying a Premium for this service when it’s inaccurate at best, and when I ask for clarification, their responses are aloof? They reply to my request for a fix (or at least clarification) with things like “we need more info”, but only allow for one screen shot per submission. There are at least a dozen more errors, and while I believe it would be a waste of my time reporting them all, I maintain that they are doing a HUGE disservice to their all-trusting customers. Still, though, this story program is better than some prep courses, IF the test is on this material (but it could be better if they actually valued feedback), but it’s so expensive…wondering how much they pay their contributors, & could I get a free month or two for my useful corrections? I mean, they do aim for accuracy, right? Guess I’m wrong on both accounts.

Could be better-Content is good but usability needs improvement

The content is definitely on the mark. The problem is usability, especially with the mobile app. The developers really need to think harder about how someone is going to use this. While the tutorial videos are likely to be viewed on a desktop/laptop while seated at a desk, it’s possible but less likely that it will be used that way on a mobile device-especially a phone. It’s far more likely that a person is going to want to study flash cards or key formulas on their phone—a quick reinforcement on the go. It’s very difficult to find the flashcards. There also should be a way to save a link to the flash card sets so you don’t have to waste time searching for them. When you only have a few minutes, a person wants to get in, study something quick, and get out. This aspect really needs improvement. It’s a little overpriced considering how poorly that aspect is executed. Use from a pc while at a desk so you can take notes and work out sample problems and such is very good. Downgrading my review from 3 stars to 2 stars. Support for questions regarding content is very poor.

Today, we get to write about everyone’s favorite subject: Homework . More specifically, we’re going to talk about homework apps for iPhone and iPad.

Of course, most of us don’t actually get excited about homework. It’s boring, stressful, challenging, time-consuming, and lots of other adjectives that none of us like too much.

I hope, however, that by sharing some of these apps with you, you’ll be able to alleviate some of the negativity that’s attached to assignments. I’ll cover apps to help you schedule, solve, save, and prepare for your homework.

Start using the best homework apps for iPhone and iPad

The best homework apps for iphone.

First, we’re going to cover homework apps for iPhone. Many of these apps are available on iPhone and iPad, so be sure to download them to your device of preference.

I’m separating these apps based on how I suspect most of us use our iPhones vs. how we use our iPads. In other words, I’m going to be focusing on scheduling, calculating, and saving your homework on iPhone with the following apps.

Let’s start with a classic.

1. myHomework : The ultimate homework planner

myHomework is without a doubt the most popular homework app there is. If you only take one thing away from this article, it’s to download myHomework. I used this app through college and wish I had discovered it in high school.

myHomework combines your assignments and your class schedule into a single app. This allows you to use it to see when assignments are due, when classes are coming up, and how these two things relate to each other.

Even better, you can link assignments to your classes. And you can color-code your classes, too. This means that you’ll easily be able to see when assignments are due, what class they’re due for, and you can check these things on all of your devices (including a computer). You can even schedule recurring assignments and set reminders.

2. Mathway : Get step-by-step solutions to your math homework

Mathway is a great example of a tool that would only be possible in today’s day and age. It allows you to take a picture of your math homework (in any level or area of math) and instantly receive the answer.

While that’s a convenient way to get your homework done, it’s also not so great for learning. This is why Mathway also provides you with step-by-step directions on how to solve the problem. If you miss class, didn’t take enough notes, or are simply struggling to understand certain concepts, this can be a lifesaver.

Mathway even has a chatbot that you can interact with. You can ask it about certain types of problems, for definitions, and much more. It should be noted, though, that you’ll need to subscribe to the app for anything more than just getting the solution to a problem. If math is a major part of your coursework, however, it’s well worth the subscription.

3. Class Timetable : A beautiful way to view your class schedule

Like myHomework, Class Timetable allows you to enter your classes into a schedule and view them in a calendar. Unlike myHomework, however, you can view your courses in a much more visual and pleasing layout.

Rather than just listing out your classes and their times, Class Timetable shows you a visual calendar where your classes are represented by blocks. You can see how long classes are compared to one another in an instance and quickly see where your free time lies.

Class Timetable offers notifications, exporting, and more. It’s one of the prettiest apps for keeping track of your classes and can help you plan out your day way faster. It’s one of the best looking homework apps for iPhone to be sure.

4. Wyzant : Find a great tutor at a moment’s notice

As someone who has since left college, one of the resources I woefully ignored was tutoring. I was worried about embarrassing myself, admitting that I was struggling, and my grades suffered as a result.

This is why I think it’s super important for high schoolers and college students to use an app like Wyzant. Wyzant is like Yelp for tutors. You can quickly find tutors in your area, see their reviews, and message them to set up a meeting.

Wyzant hosts tutors for students in kindergarten through college. They even offer tutors for PSAT, ACT, SAT, LSAT, MCAT, GRE, and more. In other words, you’ll find someone who can help. And getting that help is so important that I had to include this on this list of homework apps for iPhone.

5. IELTS Essays : Take the pressure off of your essays

As someone who now writes for a living, I can confidently tell you that apps like IELTS Essays are a godsend. You can use this app and others like it to get past writers’ block and make essay writing less daunting.

IELTS Essays is an app that provides you with tips, advice, and examples for your essay writing. You can use it to come up with a response to a prompt, see how you should structure your essay, and brainstorm ideas.

The app even helps you outline your essay and polish your introduction. It’s a pretty simple app, but if you’re new to essay writing, the simple stuff can go a long way. It’s deserving of a spot on our best homework apps for iPhone.

6. Microsoft Lens : Save your notes, assignments, instructions, and more

Unlike everything else on this list of homework apps for iPhone so far, Microsoft Lens was not made specifically for homework. I doubt too many users even use it for this purpose. But I loved using it in college.

If you don’t know, Microsoft Lens is a simple app that allows you to quickly scan documents into your phone. You just point the in-app camera at a sheet of paper or whiteboard and snap a pic. It’ll automatically crop the image so that all you can see is the document. You can tweak the crop if you like as well as use it to edit photos in your Photos app.

You can save the photos you take with Microsoft Lens to your Photos app, Files app, export them as PDFs, and more. There are other apps like Microsoft Lens ( read here ) but Microsoft Lens is the one that’s stayed on my phone for years.

7. The Homework App : An alternative to myHomework

Ok, so I still think that myHomework is one of the best homework apps for iPhone. However, there are alternatives, and I’d be remiss not to suggest any. Just in case you end up not liking myHomework.

The Homework App is very similar to myHomework, with some slight adjustments. First, I think it’s a huge visual improvement. It looks way better, is much simpler, and all-around looks like an app made in 2021.

Second, The Homework App allows you to break your homework up into subtasks. For a basic assignment, this might not seem like a big deal. But when you’re working on a project that takes weeks and maybe even has graded milestones, this is an appreciated feature.

Third, you can add your instructors’ details to each of your assignments. This makes this app more of an all-in-one tool; you won’t be flipping back to your notes so often.

I recommend trying this out alongside myHomework and seeing which one better suits your needs.

The best homework apps for iPad

Next up, we have the best homework apps for iPad. As mentioned, these are going to differ slightly from the homework apps for iPhone, even though many of these apps are also available on iPhone.

In this list, I’ve tried to include apps related to note-taking, research, and studying, as I feel like these tasks are better suited to iPad users.

1. Khan Academy : The ultimate learning resource

First up on our list of homework apps for iPad is one of my favorite apps of all time: Khan Academy. If you don’t know what Khan Academy is, it’s a free education resource for pretty much everything. Any subject, question, course, or problem most likely has a resource on Khan Academy.

Khan Academy is a completely free app filled with lesson plans and video tutorials on everything. From basic math to calculus to chemistry to programming to English, there are Khan Academy courses that will teach and test you.

One of the best parts of Khan Academy is that it doesn’t care about grading you – its goal is to teach you. So it’ll keep helping you through a subject until you achieve mastery, not necessarily a good grade.

If you need a free alternative to a tutor, learn something new, or just keep your skills sharp, download this app.

2. Google Docs : Collaborate, write, and take notes for free

You probably already use Google Docs, but I couldn’t help but mention it in a homework context. If you already have a Google Account, then you already have free, unlimited access to Google Docs. It’s a robust word processor that you can use on all of your devices.

What makes Google Docs so great, though, is that it’s cloud-based. This means all of your assignments, notes, and essays are stored online for free. You’ll never lose the files. And you won’t be stuck using Apple Pages or Microsoft Word.

Additionally, Google Docs allows you to collaborate with other users on a doc in real-time, remotely. That means two people can be editing the same doc without needing to be in the same place. Super helpful for group notes or projects. It’s one of the staple homework apps for iPad.

3. Microsoft OneNote : The ultimate note-taking app for typed notes

If you prefer to type your notes like me, then OneNote is going to become one of your favorites. It’s a simple note-taking app that makes organization and layouts super easy.

First off, this app is separated by notebooks, which you can also divide into different sections. So a simple organization technique would be to have a notebook for each of your classes and then a new section of notes for each lecture. Everything can be color-coded as well, which is easy for quick identification.

Secondly, you can type anywhere, instantly. OneNote creates a new text box wherever you start typing. So you don’t have to take notes linearly. You can quickly add photos, too. In my opinion, this is superior to Apple Notes for anyone who prefers typed notes over handwritten ones.

4. Wolfram Alpha : Every calculator ever in a single app

Wolfram Alpha is one of those apps that you’ve probably used countless times without realizing. It has a web-based version that you can access at any time and that many websites incorporate into their own site. Like Google Images or Wikipedia, it’s just one of those internet things you bump into a lot.

Well, the Wolfram Alpha app for iPad is even better than the web version. The design is clean and simple, the features are extremely robust, and it contains everything you would ever need when it comes to calculators, graphs, and data.

In addition to its numerous calculators, Wolfram Alpha has features like hints, step-by-step solutions, an expanded keyboard, data pulled from websites, fitness information, and so much more. If the internet is like having a library in your pocket, this is like having every calculator in your pocket at once. It’s by far one of the best homework apps for iPad, and it’s only $2.99.

5. Stack Exchange : Get answers in advanced subjects

When I started college, I was surprised to find for the first time that I had questions Google couldn’t answer. The further you get into a particular study, especially if that study is complex, the harder it’s going to be to find information online. And you might have a professor that uses terms and concepts that are unique to them.

That’s where a forum like Stack Exchange can help you fill in the gaps. Similar to Reddit, Stack Exchange is a vote-based forum for people to ask and answer questions. Unlike Reddit, however, Stack Exchange is pretty serious. You’ll find that there are lots of rules, which can be tricky at first, but this creates a much more reliable resource in the end.

You can get educated and interactive answers on all kinds of topics. Many think that Stack Exchange is just for programming, but not so! Stack Exchange has forums dedicated to all kinds of disciplines and subjects, so you can find the one for your major and get personalized, educated advice to all of your questions. It’s like an upgrade for Google, which is why it’s made our list of homework apps for iPad.

6. Apple Notes : The best note-taking app for handwritten notes

I almost didn’t include this app since every iPad user already has this app and probably uses it. But just in case, I wanted to throw it out there.

By now, the majority of iPads have some form of Apple Pencil support. And thanks to iOS 14, that support includes handwritten text detection. This means that iPad can detect the words you write with the Apple Pencil and help you edit, spell check, and relocate your handwritten notes.

If you have an Apple Pencil and like to write your notes down, you should be taking notes in the Notes app. You can search your handwritten text, keep it stored and organized, and reduce the number of notebooks you’re carrying from class to class. And even if you like typing notes on your iPad, using the Notes app with the Apple Pencil makes it easy to include sketches and graphs with your notes.

And that’s all of the apps I have to suggest! I’ve used and loved most of these apps, and I hope that you do, too. They’re all great and useful and can make your school life so much easier. Not to mention that some of these apps can completely save your grade when you’re struggling.

Breaking news, viral miguel vargas video shows ex-dodger acknowledging brutal white sox reality.

Things are a lot less sunny when you leave Los Angeles.

As the Chicago White Sox lost their 21st straight game on Monday night in Oakland — tying an American League record — cameras panned to infielder Miguel Vargas sulking in a corner of the team’s dugout.

With the scoreboard graphic overlaid, Vargas looked coaches up and down while hardly even quivering a lip.

The 24-year-old joined the lowly White Sox on July 29 in a trade that sent reliever Michael Kopech and infielder Tommy Edman to the Dodgers, plus starter Erick Fedde to the Cardinals.

In that span, the White Sox have gone 0-6 despite Vargas starting every game.

During that stretch, the utilityman has hit just 3-for-24 (.125) with two extra-base hits, two RBIs and two walks.

As a team, Chicago’s last win arrived on July 10 against the Minnesota Twins and could challenge the modern MLB record with 23 straight losses, a feat accomplished by the Phillies in 1961.

The White Sox last even led a game in the sixth inning against Minnesota on Aug. 3 but eventually surrendered four runs in the final four innings to lose.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers — who boast the NL’s second-best record at 66-47 — have gone 3-3 since acquiring Kopech, including winning their last three matchups.

In a battle of two of baseball’s best on Monday night, the Dodgers held on for a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, featuring a scoreless inning of relief from Kopech.

Vargas, who spent most of his first three seasons in Los Angeles, isn’t used to losing with much regularity.

In the last three years, the Dodgers have gone 277-160 in the regular season, tallying 12 more wins than any other team.

However, the postseason has been more of a house of horrors.

Los Angeles famously lost in the NLDS to the Padres and Diamondbacks in consecutive years, not mustering more than one win in each individual series.

As Mookie Betts, Edman and other Dodgers return to action in the final six weeks of MLB’s regular season, Los Angeles looks to exorcise its postseason demons and reach the World Series for the first time since 2020.

On the other hand, the White Sox look to avoid surpassing the 1988 Orioles for the longest losing streak since 1961.

New SpongeBob SquarePants Environment comes to Apple Vision Pro

Paramount Plus is rolling out a new SpongeBob SquarePants-themed Environment for Apple Vision Pro users today . The new immersive experience, which also includes a jellyfish interactive game, takes Vision Pro users underwater and straight to Bikini Bottom. And it’s all in honor of 25 years of SpongeBob SquarePants.

As first reported by TechRadar , the Paramount Plus Environment is available to subscribers starting today. Daniel Reich, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Product and Design at Paramount Plus, told TechRadar’s Jake Krol:

“It’s been an exciting creative process bringing SpongeBob’s Bikini Bottom to life and providing a truly unique, interactive streaming experience for our subscribers and the show’s loyal fan base.”

In addition to the Bikini Bottom Environment itself, the experience also includes an interactive game where you can catch jellyfish. Once you start the game, you simply look at jellyfish as they move around the Environment, then tap your fingers together to “catch” them with a net.

This new SpongeBob SquarePants Environment for Paramount Plus comes a day after Disney+ rolled out a new Iceland Environment in collaboration with National Geographic. Apple also recently launched a new Lake Vrangla Environment for Apple Vision Pro, and there’s a new Bora Bora option coming this fall with visionOS 2.

And as I wrote in my coverage of the new Disney+ Environment yesterday:

Disney+’s robust set of immersive Environments is a great example of why third-party apps should be able to “donate” their Environments to visionOS itself. Currently, Disney+ Environments can  only  be used in the Disney+ app. My hope is that one day you’ll be able to use Disney+ Environments anywhere in visionOS, just like you can the Environments made by Apple itself.

Disney modestly expanded its already significant presence on the Apple Vision Pro, announcing a wintry exclusive immersive background environment from National Geographic for the pricey spatial-computing headset, and four more big Marvel movies in 3D.

The four films added to the studio’s Disney+ streaming service on the AVP are The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) , Ant-Man (2015) , and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018).

The two Avengers movies racked up more than $2.9 billion in global theatrical grosses, making them among the most successful film releases of all time. The Ant-Man projects weren’t quite as boffo at the box office, but still jointly accounted for nearly $1 billion in global grosses.

The Apple Vision Pro debuted in February with a number of Apple-supplied background environments taken from highly realistic real-world natural settings, including a lakeside-view of Mt. Hood in Oregon and a high-desert scene in Joshua Tree National Monument.

The environments change over the course of the day and night, and also include gentle background sounds such as rain drops and wind. Turning the AVP’s crown mechanism allows the environment to opaquely block out external surroundings or make the virtual environment increasingly transparent so a user can see what’s happening around them.

The new environment from National Geographic features a snowy immersive scene from Iceland’s Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, and is exclusively available to Disney+ subscribers. It is NatGeo’s first AVP project, captured by the organization’s photographers using high-resolution 3D models captured on-site using photogrammetry and gigapixel panoramas. It features a night-time aurora borealis.

“Creating this immersive environment was a natural next step for us to take to build on that legacy and to continue enabling audiences to experience the beauty of our natural world and see places they may never go to otherwise,” said National Geographic EVP David Miller in a release.

Apple debuted its immersive headset with about 150 3-D films as part of the subscription Disney+ app among other offerings. Apple even used a scene from James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water as part of its 30-minute headset demonstrations in its United States stores. The company recently said it would begin selling the headset in nine other countries before the end of the year.

More recently, Disney+ added an AVP-friendly episode of its Marvel What If.. animated series, called What If...An Immersive Story.

External estimates of AVP sales have been modest, less than 500,000 units. Apple has not released any sales figures. The apparent slow start is perhaps unsurprising given the AVP’s starting price of $3,499. It has been criticized for the price, which is roughly 10 times that of far less capable but market-leading Quest headsets from Meta.

But the AVP also provides remarkable high-end video, audio, telepresence and other immersive technologies unmatched by anything else in the commercial market. It also integrates into the vast Apple hardware and software ecosystem, already running thousands of apps from other Apple platforms.

Tech consultant and essayist Matthew Ball recently likened the AVP, and the many years Apple spent developing it, to what Tesla went through to launch its electric vehicles, beginning with a model that cost more than $100,000 while it worked out production processes, charging networks and the rest, on the way to building a $35,000 electric vehicle.

“So part of this is not just about building the developer ecosystem, understanding what consumers want, and playing around with price points and feature and weight and form and fit and things like eyesight, but it is actually building up the infrastructure to be able to get the cost down,” Ball said.

Few records combine sonic innovation with veneration for what came before as succinctly as Daft Punk’s 1997 debut, Homework. The title itself implies this duality: It’s a reference to both the bedroom studio where musicians Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo recorded their early house and techno productions, and a nod to the older artists the duo studied in preparation for their dance music breakthrough. Many of those musical ancestors are name-checked on the Homework track “Teachers,” on which Bangalter and Homem-Christo salute the (mostly) electronic music producers and DJs who inspired their work. That includes plenty of semi-obscure Chicago house music heroes and Detroit and UK techno champions, many of whom predated Daft Punk by a decade—but who were still active in the late-1990s rave scene. By tagging their peers, the members of Daft Punk were expressing solidarity with the many BIPOC artists whom they’d obsessed over for years. It was a declaration of belonging that could have come off as appropriation, had Homework not so fully elevated the genre. Bangalter and Homem-Christo might wear their influences on their sleeve, but their music transcends mere tribute; it’s some of the most unforgettable hook-laden house and techno ever put to wax. When it comes to the dance floor, if a record’s hot, that record is hot. And DJs across the globe pumped Homework’s 16 tracks, which included everything from playful filtered disco (“Revolution 909”) to throttling acid techno (“Rollin’ & Scratchin’”). Meanwhile, radio jocks and MTV programmers on the lookout for format-friendly versions of popular rave sounds swooned over Homework cuts like “Da Funk” and “Around the World,” which became breakout hits, thanks to inventive videos directed, respectively, by Spike Jonez and Michel Gondry. That near-impossible confluence of talent and timing allowed Homework to achieve its position atop every list of 1990s electronic music. As time went on, the members of Daft Punk would prove themselves worthy of every accolade Homework received as they continued to evolve from students to teachers to masters—elevating the state of electronic music every step of the way.
