Why Is Education Important? The 10 Best Reasons It’s the Key to Success in Life

a good education is the key to a successful life

Wake up. Go to school. Come home. Do homework. Sleep and repeat. Day in and day out, for 13 years, the cycle can feel a bit repetitive. Like there isn’t an end in sight. But there is, only… it’s usually through more years of education following high school.

It sounds insane, and it’s natural to wonder if completing your education is even worth it — especially with all the tales of people finding major success without a complete and traditional education. You’ve seen the Addison Rae’s and David Dobrik’s of the world drop out of college or skip it all together and rise to influencer fame. Even Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of  Harvard , for goodness sake.

But sometimes questioning the value of education isn’t about the dream of becoming an influencer and creating 30-second dances for the world to see. Maybe it’s the cost of school holding you back. Maybe it’s the time commitment. Maybe it’s the endless stories of student debt. Maybe it’s just that classic question so many kids have asked during trigonometry or biology class: “When are we going to need this in the real world?”

Well, while it would be easy to write off the value of education... don’t.

In this article, we’re going to cover 10 major reasons education is the true key to success in all facets of life. Ultimately, a diploma is so much more than a framed piece of card stock. It can open doors that you couldn’t open before. It fosters growth both inside the classroom and in your mind. It has the potential to provide you with a prosperous future. And that all sounds pretty worthwhile, right? Let’s get into the reasons receiving an education is vital.

10 Reasons an Education Is So Important to a Successful Life

Education is the path to independence.

High school is a time to discover who you are, where you want to be, and more often than not, how to get out of your parents’ house. Getting your high school diploma is the first step to cultivating a new you:  A you who has the knowledge and skills to get a job, make money, move out, become your own independent person.

There’s more to independence than just the financial side, too — there’s the independence that comes with free, well-informed, and complex thought processes as well. Your education is yours and yours alone. No one can take it from you. The more you learn, the less you’ll have to rely on others and the better life decisions you can make..

Education creates more career opportunities

However, the rest of your life does. Take it from us old, wise folks, your experience in high school is just a drop in the bucket. If you can make it through four years of high school, you have the key that opens so many doors. In most cases, a high school diploma is required to get a job in fields that tend to pay higher wages. In fact, a   Northeastern University  study  found simply completing a high school education can increase your expected income by more than $8,000 compared to not earning a high school diploma. Of course, the more education you receive, the more money you could make.

Plus, education doesn’t end when school ends. You’ll learn things at your first job, your second job, and your last job. It’s helpful to develop your skills when it comes to learning, processing information, and applying it to whatever you do.

Education helps combat poverty

They say that money can’t buy happiness, but it does buy the necessities — food, water, toilet paper, ya know, everything you could ever need to survive. Your education is a reliable tool to help you get you a job, and to keep you out of the cycle of poverty. Simply having basic skills like reading and math go a long way.

Education’s role in combatting poverty isn’t just applicable on an individual level. A lot of schools across the U.S. offer free breakfast and lunch programs for students. This means that children who might not otherwise eat get access to food during the school year — an invaluable resource for those children and their families.

Education continues (or kicks off) a virtuous generational cycle

Education isn’t solely the domain of schools; parents play a major role in their children’s education as well. Whether your parents teach you academic topics or life skills, they’re educating you. Whether it was learning how to ride a bike, do a cartwheel, memorize your multiplication tables or teaching you how to read, it’s probably left an impact on you.Your parents are teaching you everything they know.

And it’s kind of up to you to teach your children — and others around you. This creates its own domino effect. The more you learn, the more you can pass on to those around you. There’s more to education than cracking open the spine of a textbook or contextualizing a classic. Learning doesn’t just come from a book, and teaching doesn’t just happen inside the classroom. Use your education to educate others.

Education keeps you out of trouble

The best way to stay out of trouble is to stay in school. You've heard it from your parents, you’ve heard it from your educators, now hear it from us. Luckily, school offers programs, clubs, sports, and other activities that can keep you busy. And when you’re busy, you’re way less likely to get into trouble.

Plus, joining a club helps you learn about things you wouldn’t normally learn in school and that pique your interests. Take Spanish Club for example. In Spanish class, you learn about culture and conjugations. In Spanish Club, you get to dive deeper into the way Spanish-speaking countries operate. You get to try new foods or test out your skills outside the classroom. And you get to meet like minded individuals who are eager to learn more, too.

Doing the bare minimum in school may work for some people, but a   Health Care Resource Center article  found that boredom is linked to early alcohol and drug abuse, as well as anxiety and depression. Kids are already doing enough to keep their heads above water in school. There’s no need to make things harder.

Education helps you develop interpersonal skills

Insight. Understanding. Social awareness. These are interpersonal skills that you won’t just learn in school. You’ll use these skills long after your formal education is completed. And these are things your teachers will teach you. Not in an “insight” class. Rather, these are things that you pick up in class. You learn cooperation, teamwork, empathy, and verbal and non-verbal communication in the classroom. These skills you pick up in the classroom can be used everywhere in life, whether it’s a job interview, a date, or even when trying to get a customer service rep to give you a refund.

Education widens your social circle

We’re about to say something a little controversial: School is about more than just learning. It’s also about stepping out of your comfort zone, meeting new people, doing new things, and above all else, cultivating relationships. This goes hand-in-hand with those interpersonal skills we were just talking about. An education gives you the skills you need to work well both in the classroom and outside of it.

Share what you learned with others. Bond over your favorite subjects with classmates or family. Go to events that focus on your favorite subjects. This could connect you with people in the field you want to get into — whether it’s for networking purposes or just for friendship. Socializing with people over your favorite book or the eventual migration to Mars could put you in contact with a mentor or potential employer — or maybe even a future best friend or spouse.

Education builds confidence

The more you know about something, the easier it is to talk about. Being educated can elevate how you act in social settings. The more you learn, the more confident you’ll feel on any given subject. This wealth of knowledge gives you the opportunity to communicate with an air of intelligence.

When you know what you’re talking about, people will want to listen to what you have to say. It doesn’t matter if it’s quantum physics or why Hermione Granger actually should have been a Slytherin in  Harry Potter ; there’s always someone willing to listen, willing to connect with what you have to say. But you can’t get to that point if you give up on learning.

Education increases your passion for learning

One of the best parts about going to school is honing your skills. In both high school and beyond, you’re able to figure out what subjects don’t sit right with you and which ones click. Not every class is going to tickle your fancy. Maybe English is where you thrive, or perhaps you’re a sponge ready to soak up dates and wars and iconic events in history class.

When you find something you’re passionate about, it makes it a lot easier to learn. After high school, you’ll have the chance to take classes that focus on these subjects. The more you know about a certain topic, the easier it will be to figure out what you want to do after you’ve completed school. And technology makes that even easier; there are so many online courses you can take or trade schools you can attend if a traditional college isn’t right for you.

Education can make your dreams come true

Just because you’ve never tried something doesn’t mean you won’t succeed. When you were little, did you have dreams of writing the next Great American Novel or curing cancer or even something as simple as moving closer to a beach? It’s hard to imagine making any of those happen without a formal and/or informal education.

Fortunately, we’re not saying that you have to get your doctorate in order to succeed. Education comes in many forms but, as we’ve discussed, whichever form you choose has many benefits. It increases social skills, boosts confidence, breaks the cycle of poverty, and widens avenues for what’s to come. There’s an old saying that goes: your dreams won’t work unless you do. So… ready to get to work?

Forty thought-provoking quotes about education..

Posted May 12, 2014 | Reviewed by Ekua Hagan

As we seek to refine and reform today’s system of education , we would do well to ask, “What is education?” Our answers may provide insights that get to the heart of what matters for 21st century children and adults alike.

It is important to step back from divisive debates on grades, standardized testing, and teacher evaluation—and really look at the meaning of education. So I decided to do just that—to research the answer to this straightforward, yet complex question.

Looking for wisdom from some of the greatest philosophers, poets, educators, historians, theologians, politicians, and world leaders, I found answers that should not only exist in our history books, but also remain at the core of current education dialogue.

In my work as a developmental psychologist, I constantly struggle to balance the goals of formal education with the goals of raising healthy, happy children who grow to become contributing members of families and society. Along with academic skills, the educational journey from kindergarten through college is a time when young people develop many interconnected abilities.

As you read through the following quotes, you’ll discover common threads that unite the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical aspects of education. For me, good education facilitates the development of an internal compass that guides us through life.

Which quotes resonate most with you? What images of education come to your mind? How can we best integrate the wisdom of the ages to address today’s most pressing education challenges?

If you are a middle or high school teacher, I invite you to have your students write an essay entitled, “What is Education?” After reviewing the famous quotes below and the images they evoke, ask students to develop their very own quote that answers this question. With their unique quote highlighted at the top of their essay, ask them to write about what helps or hinders them from getting the kind of education they seek. I’d love to publish some student quotes, essays, and images in future articles, so please contact me if students are willing to share!

Top-10-Reasons-Why-Is-Education-Important

Most of us have grown up being taught the importance of education. But why is education important? Through your frustrating school years, you may have thought that it was a waste of time, or was just something that you needed to do in order to get a job. Truth be told, however, education goes so much beyond just getting a job and making your parents happy. In fact, it’s one of the most powerful tools out there.

What Is Education?

Education means studying in order to obtain a deeper knowledge and understanding of a variety of subjects to be applied to daily life. Education is not limited to just knowledge from books, but can also be obtained through practical experiences outside of the classroom.

Top 10 Reasons: Why Is Education Important?

There are many different understandings and definitions of what education is, but one thing can be universally agreed upon, which is the importance of education — and here’s why.

1. Provides Stability

Education provides stability in life, and it’s something that no one can ever take away from you. By being well-educated and holding a college degree , you increase your chances for better career opportunities and open up new doors for yourself.

2. Provides Financial Security

On top of stability, education also provides financial security, especially in today’s society. A good education tends to lead to a higher paying job, as well as provide you with the skills needed to get there.

3. Needed For Equality

In order for the entire world to really become equal, it needs to start with education. If everyone was provided with the same opportunities to education , then there would be less gaps between social classes. Everyone would be able to have an equal chance at higher paying jobs — not just those that are already well-off.

4. Allows For Self-Dependency

The importance of education is evident when it comes to being self-dependent. If we are we educated, then it’s something that belongs to us, and only us, allowing us to rely on no one else other than ourselves. It can allow you to not only be financially independent, but also to make your own choices.

5. Make Your Dreams Come True

If you can dream it, you can achieve it. An education is the most powerful weapon you can possibly have, and with it, you can make all of your dreams come true. There are of course certain exceptions, depending on what you’re aiming for, but generally an education will take you as far as you’re willing to go.

6. A Safer World

Education is something that’s not only needed on a personal level, but also on a global level, as it’s something that keeps our world safe and makes it a more peaceful place. Education tends to teach people the difference between right and wrong, and can help people stay out of risky situations.

7. Confidence

Being self-confident is a major part of being successful in life. And what better way to gain that confidence than with an education? Your level of education is often considered a way to prove your knowledge, and it can give you the confidence to express your opinions and speak your mind.

8. A Part Of Society

In today’s society, having an education is considered a vital part of being accepted by those around you. Having an education is believed to make you a useful part of society, and can make you feel like a contributing member as well.

9. Economic Growth On A National Level

An educated society is crucial for economic growth. We need people to continue to learn and research in order to constantly stay innovative. Countries with higher literacy rates also tend to be in better economic situations. With a more educated population, more employment opportunities are opened.

10. Can Protect You

Education can protect you more than you know, not only on a financial level, but it can help prevent you from being taken advantage of by knowing how to read and write, such as knowing not to sign any bogus documents.

Education is important for children.

Children are the future of our world, making education crucial for them. Their knowledge is what’s going to keep our world alive and flourishing.

At Childhood

During the childhood development stages, the importance of education is stronger than ever. It’s a time for children to learn social and mental skills that will be crucial for their growth and success in the future. Education at childhood also offers a chance for self-discovery and to learn about their unique interests.

The importance of education in our lives goes far beyond what we can read in a textbook. Education also provides childhood with knowledge such as how to produce artwork and make music. Education allows us to analyze what’s in front of us, and even learn from our mistakes.

Goal Building

By learning from a young age, children are given the chance to start building goals for themselves. Education means having the logic to set your mind to something and achieve it.

Importance Of Education In Society

For a modern society, education is of utmost importance. There are so many influences coming from all directions, and education can help us decipher what we should take as true, and what we should take with a grain of salt. Education can mold people into functional members of society with the right kinds of values.

Productivity

Education is needed for a productive society. Our population only continues to increase, and in turn, so do our needs. We need a strong and efficient workforce of educated people to provide us with the services we need for everyday life.

The Impact Education Has On The World

With education, people can become better citizens, knowing right from wrong, allowing for a better society where laws are followed. An educated nation knows about the importance of voting, doing so with the knowledge not blindly, but also having an understanding of what their party truly stands for. Education can also help people get jobs, which is what a nation thrives on.

Education will be the key to supporting a broad understanding of systems and the way in which all disciplines work in tandem.

Education allows individuals to fully participate in our world in two major ways. From a knowledge perspective, a comprehensive education exposes people to a shared sense of identity, purpose, and language.

We learn how to move within social and professional spaces, and at its best education deepens our emotional and psychological intelligence. We learn to be more empathetic to difference, compassionate to our self and flexible with our view of the world.

Education in its purest form is expansive in nature. The opposite would be narrow indoctrination where you learn a sliver of half-truths and believe that one idea needs to blanket all experiences at any cost.

From a social perspective is the aspect of belonging. Being educated affords us a shared set of cultural and historical references from Greek mythology to the connection between the War of the Roses and Game of Thrones. Education creates an archive of references that then makes even our leisure experiences richer.

Education is vital in our life because it is the foundation on which we build everything else. First, though, let’s eliminate the notion that education is something formal linked to an institution. It’s not. Classrooms are not the start or end of human education.

Simply put, education is being enlightened to new thoughts, ideas, or potential. It might be achieved in a systematic formal way, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Education is when the mind grows and expands.

It doesn’t matter what someone wants to do; it will involve education. Besides the innate knowledge, we have as babies–for example that that gravity isn’t something to mess with–we’re clean slates.

If a human wants to try, achieve, or participate in something, they have to learn how.. That first time a baby realizes they want to be able to get to the table and grab that toy themselves, they decide to educate themselves on the process of crawling. Looking around they’ll soon realize there is a quicker way to get what they want–walking. And thus that milestone of progress begins.

For our entire lives, humans can desire to do something new or do something differently. It’s human nature to see problems and try to solve them, to see mountains and try to climb them, to see a void and fill it.

And while we might all focus on different things, and learn in different ways, education is the only way to accomplish anything new, to improve, or grow. We must shed light on the darkness to see where we are going.

So if it is someone learning to decorate cakes, an architecture student, a kid on a bike, or a physicist contemplating the matter of the galaxy, education is the backbone of what will lead them to success.

With the high cost of college today and rising student loan obligations, many are questioning whether it is important and the expense worth it. However, I am a witness to how far a person can possibly go with education.

My story. I always intended to go to college, taking all the college prep classes offered in high school. Then one day my mom retired from her civil service job in a big city and announced we would be moving to her small hometown in Virginia.

Alas, I was entering my senior year in high school. A factory town, jobs were limited upon graduation so I accepted a dead-end job at the local shoe factory.

With no money to go to college, I felt I was destined to factory life forever. While I am not knocking factory work, I wanted more.

One day on break, I saw an ad for the Air Force. Taking the entrance exam and entering military service my life took a turn for the better.

Earning bachelors and masters degrees courtesy of GI Bill (no student loans) my positions and careers have included a short stint as a mental health counselor, adjunct professors at colleges/universities in the US and abroad, nearly 24 years as a university administrator and today a published author and freelance writer.

Besides jobs, having an education teaches you many life long skills such as how to communicate with others, introduces folks to educators and other scholars that have had major influences on our world and lives today. It did this for me.

When I think of education, I am forced to look at our history of species. We have made mistake after mistake, but “ good ” education was the key to bringing us out of the dark ages (literally). Education is synonymous with knowledge and wisdom. I would characterize good education as the following:

Knowledge of oneself that gives you a sense of identity.

For example, there is widespread movement in the African-American community to research their family history.

Knowledge of others that gives you a sense of purpose and allows you to relate to someone outside of your tribe/culture.

These are the most basic notions of human philosophies and arguably the most important. Formal education has been regarded as the highest ranking kind, however independently seeking out wisdom from the coffers of historical books and current philosophers is a good place to start. And I would rather live in this world with a person who is open to knowledge and wisdom than one that is not.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Josaia Marr, who retired from his post as one of Shell’s Chief Executive and Managing Directors some years ago.

The story of how he reached the top table of corporate life was truly remarkable: as a native Fijian, he had not only had to break through the “bamboo ceiling” early in his career but before even that, he had had to fight hard to get a quality education, as a child of a third-world village with no electricity or running water.

The difference between the world Josaia came from and the one he was to succeed in is beautifully illustrated by the following anecdote he tells.

He was aged 11 and had just won a prestigious scholarship to the boarding school on Fiji. He walked into the ironing room in his first week to find, to his bemusement, none of the coconut shells he was used to setting light to in the belly of a great metal iron to generate heat to de-crease clothes.

Instead, “fire” seemed to be coming down wires from sockets in the walls. Entranced, he stuck his finger into one of the holes. He got quite the shock – literally, as well as intellectually!

His fascination with science was kindled and coupled with his passion for education as a whole and a thirst to succeed in life, he did well at school and landed a rare university scholarship in Australia.

The power of education eventually transformed a boy who’d never seen an electric iron into a world-leading businessman. Education has the power to change lives – and the data shows it’s not just Josaia who has benefited.

Education makes us smarter.

Each additional year of education increases intelligence by 1-5 IQ points.

Education makes us healthier.

Each additional year of education increases life expectancy at age 35 by as much as 1.7 years.

Education makes us richer.

For every extra year that you spend in education beyond secondary school, you can expect to add 11%-13% to your paycheck. For example, data from the current US population survey shows those with a Bachelor’s degree earn on average $1,137 per week, compared to the average high school graduate on $678.

Josaia’s story shows that quality education is one of the great leveling forces in society: you may have to fight tooth and nail at every step like he did, but if you’re committed to bettering your lot in life, nothing is beyond your reach.

My son is learning to read, sounding out words like C-A-T or B-O-X. He sees these same words again and again, and he doesn’t have to sound it out. He just reads them. He reads more. He is so proud of himself and calls himself a reader. He confidently tells friends that he can read.

Education, whether formal or informal, has its wonderful benefits of giving a person a higher starting salary or more options for moving up in her career, but there are altruistic reasons that education is so important to a person and to society.

We can raise the next generation to be confident by educating them and praising them for what they’re learning.

We can better appreciate excellence in art, science, sports, math, music or anything if we understand it. We can engage with others in a more meaningful way.

We can learn discipline by becoming educated in any subject.

We can satisfy an innate sense of curiosity about the world and discover not only our strengths but also our passions.

It breaks down boundaries.

Higher education often comes with breaking down boundaries and being exposed to more people of different perspectives outside of our home or immediate neighborhood.

This is a wonderful benefit of education because we can gain a social intelligence and awareness of how other people work and learn and judge and lead, and in turn, we can be more self-aware of how we do the same.

As someone who has worked in education and currently teaches people of retirement age how to play musical instruments and achieve recognized qualifications in music, I can share a unique perspective.

Education for the elderly is often ignored by society at large but has an important role to play within society itself. Many elderly people lack a lot of confidence to learn and try new things but the ones that do often improve their lives and the lives of others around them.

This is shown by my students who go from never having played a musical instrument in their lives and sometimes living an isolated life to being someone who is reinvigorated by life, makes new friends and is ready to take on new skills.

They often become members of music clubs such as guitar or ukulele clubs and even perform live gigs to other retired people or charities. These students become role models for other members of society which include their friends of a similar age and their young family members such as grandchildren.

It is important for all of society that the elder generation are happy, vibrant and living life to the full rather the hermit-like grumpy image many in society give them. The inspiring image of the former helps everyone in society and not just a happy older person.

From something as simple as casual music education, the above can be achieved and an independent, happy and joyful older generation can continue to thrive.

If society helped the older generation learn other things as well as music, such as learning another language (which is common in Sweden at retirement age) a sport, chess-clubs or more, then the world would surely be a better place.

Those subjects teach every person how to grapple with the abstract sensations we all feel every day: thoughts, emotions, ideas.

There is a famous quote in Sanskrit that translates into:

Education makes a person humble. Being humble makes a person noble. With nobility, money, and righteousness come. And these finally lead to peace.

In Retrospect…

Let’s examine our society for a minute. What’s the cause of violence, unhappiness, and overall chaos? We can always argue and cite various reasons for this – lack of money, or inequality. But all those reasons do not address the core of the issue.

A little introspection will reveal that it is “ignorance” that causes a disturbance in a healthy society. And what’s the cause of ignorance? Lack of education.

Please understand that when I use the word “ education “,  I am not referring to mere formal education that you can get in schools and colleges. My focus in a 360-degree growth of human beings – an educational approach that can make us think.

As human beings, what we receive in life is directly related to what we think and do. You can use the term “ karma ” to explain this aspect. In other words, every decision of ours has a direct impact on our future. Hurting or loving someone, supporting or abandoning someone, hugging or hitting someone…all these are results of a decision.

Often, our decisions happen in a fraction of a second. So if our minds (not just the brain) are trained to think clearly and analyze before “ acting ” upon a thought, most of the problems of the world would disappear.

Education is a powerful tool to address that core issue. It can develop a positive thought process in a child, thus allowing the child to think rationally before acting quickly.

How to start?

Imparting education is not only the responsibility of teachers. That’s where we go wrong. Education is not about “ reading ” books or memorizing things.

The best form of education is through observation, analysis, and experimentation.

Observe a small baby, and you will see these three things in “ action “. So, if parents are not setting an example of “ positive ” education, how can we expect a child to grow into a noble human being?

Parents, teachers, and almost each one of us has a moral responsibility to set good examples for the next generation. Think before you act. Ponder before you say something impulsively.

When one enters into the world, they have a unique set of DNA that accounts for their nature. Depending on location, society, socioeconomic background, and most importantly upbringing at home, one’s experience with nurture is shaped through early formative experiences that will either benefit or challenge them as they grow into young children, adolescents and later on into adults.

I believe that the only true factor into guiding an individual to live a decent and meaningful life is when they receive an education whether it is academically based, through life experience, or learned while on the job or by performing a task.

In the broadest sense, education is what gives people access to learning and when one learns something, they have the opportunity to acquire knowledge that can be processed, reflected upon, and recalled in a variety of circumstances and interpersonal relationships both personally and professionally.

In terms of scholastic education, when young children have a solid and positive foundation that instills the joy of learning through exploration and discovery, they start to form positive habits of becoming lifelong learners.

By the time they approach middle school, they are prepared to take on more sophisticated challenges when approaching a range of subject matter that can help them define their path of study along with rediscovering themselves within the world as they go through physical, emotional, and mental changes.

Equally important is one’s transition into high school. In today’s day and age where higher education has become tremendously costly, one may initially feel deterred to pursue a college education.

Yet if guided and supported by families, teachers, and the community, students can learn that there are many good organizations and scholarships out there that support college-bound students who strive for success upon their own merit.

Without having primary, secondary, and at the very least, undergraduate level education or vocational training, individuals will find themselves virtually “iced-out” of true possibility of financial stability as they enter into adulthood.

What the global community needs to understand is that education has to be at the forefront of our minds—starting within our homes, within school districts, society, and reaching up to the governing level. The day that we stop learning is the day that we stop living.

Apart from the obvious reason of preparing a student for the professional world, it serves a much broader scope. A good education should not only equip a student with specific knowledge but also provide a broader view of the possibilities available in today’s world, widening the horizons of the students.

As of today, the traditional concept of education as a step well defined in time and duration towards a profession is no longer valid.

The ever-changing world we live in now, fast-paced and constantly progressing, demands for life-long learning in order to keep updated with the latest trends, technologies, and tools that can help us to become better suited and more effective in the pursuit of a fulfilling career.

Education becomes then all the more important, for it is no more a single step to face in order to reach a profession, a box to tick once done, but rather an on-going process that’s closely linked to self-development.

It’s no longer about acquiring technical or vocational skills – instead, it’s about empowering students with a toolbox of transferable knowledge that will contribute to forming their mindset.

At a later stage, it’s about nurturing the skills and knowledge already mastered to develop a better understanding of the world and where it’s headed.

The most difficult challenge is to ensure that there are tools to support learners as they go through education, which is what we do at Pathfinder, as our vision is to provide a platform that leads students to find and prepare for a fulfilling career.

We believe that self-development, career-development, and education shouldn’t be perceived as siloed stages of life anymore. They are different aspects of the developing journey, intertwined and equally important.

So many people are faced with the problem of having the passion for something, but lacking the key skills they need to take it from hobby to profession. Think about the famous Abraham Lincoln quote for a second, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

A lack of proper education is like working with a dull axe. Sure, you will eventually accomplish your goal, but it will take you far longer and dramatically more effort.

Education sharpens your skills and even though you get off to a delayed start, you catch up and pass those who skipped it in short matter of time.

In my opinion, there are three reasons why education is so important in life:

First, education gives you the exposure and the ability to think independently that you require in life to succeed on all fronts. It helps you in creating opinions and distinguishing right from wrong.

Secondly, it helps you develop a unique perspective in life along with building confidence in your skills. This helps you in dealing with difficult situations in a sound and rational manner.

Thirdly, education helps you get innovative and creative. Let me give you one example – as a student, I was quick to make money writing articles for publications and covering some expenses. Similarly, I know of college students, who work as a virtual assistant and earn $1-2k a month which helps them pay student debt sooner than others.

Aside from offering increased professional opportunities and the chance to make more money, education has some less tangible, but just as important, effects.

One is that we are presented with context, with history, with a realization that we are not the first generation to be unhappy with the status quo, to protest, to seek a better world. We get a sense of our present in relation to the past, and we can better frame the future.

On a personal level, we can also realize that we are not the first person to feel alone, vulnerable, or afraid. Literature, with its characters and stories, can shine a light on our troubles and perhaps make them more manageable. “Wow, that’s just how I feel!” is something more than one person has said after reading a line of Shakespeare.

Another major element of education is the development of critical thinking. This ability, to see the more complex and nuanced aspects of an issue, opinion, or challenge, is key. It plays a vital role as we make choices, personal, professional, and political.

In today’s constantly evolving world, it’s more important than ever to stay educated. Education comes with many benefits that you can apply to both your career and personal life.

You are keeping your brain active and healthy

By consistently learning, you are keeping your brain active and healthy. Not to mention, education provides you with new skills and the confidence to tackle new projects.

Thankfully, you can find a ton of educational resources for free online to get you started with almost any subject.

It provides motivation

Also, I believe the most beneficial aspect of education is the motivation it provides. One of the best ways to avoid feeling ‘stagnated’, or like you’re not going anywhere, is to learn something new and set goals for yourself.

There’s nothing that feels better than achieving a goal from scratch. So if you’re ever feeling stuck, it’s probably a good idea to dive into something you’ve always wanted to learn.

Education can help you find new ways to enhance your life

You might find a new hobby, or even a cause you’re passionate about! Personally, I became enthralled by the government and politics when I was in high school.

I put a lot of time and effort into learning how our government functioned (and a whole lot of history). I’ve since put in hundreds of hours of volunteer work for various political campaigns, which has paved the way for a lot of opportunities to open up.

Is formal education the only way to learn?

No, formal education is not the only way to learn. Formal education does provide structured learning experiences and recognized credentials, but individuals can also learn in other ways, such as:

Informal learning:  Informal learning refers to learning outside of formal education, such as at work, in volunteer activities, or in hobbies. Informal learning can be as valuable as formal education because it gives individuals practical skills and real-world experience.

Self-directed learning:  Self-directed learning refers to learning that occurs on the individual’s own initiative and direction, without the guidance of a teacher or formal curriculum.

Self-directed learning can be an effective means of pursuing one’s own interests and passions and acquiring knowledge and skills on one’s own terms.

Online learning:  Online learning refers to learning that occurs over the Internet on platforms such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), webinars, and podcasts. Online learning can be a convenient and flexible way to learn, giving individuals access to many resources and learning opportunities.

Is it ever too late to pursue education?

No, it’s never too late to continue your education. Whether you have just graduated from high school or are a seasoned professional, there are many opportunities to continue learning and growing.

Lifelong learning is essential to personal growth and development, and anyone can benefit from it at any age.

Adult learners can start with continuing education programs, professional development courses, certifications, or even online courses. These options can be balanced with work schedules, family priorities, and adult responsibilities.

Many universities even offer flexible evening or weekend courses designed specifically to fit adult learners’ schedules. Remember, it’s important to be clear about your goals and passions and look for educational opportunities that align with them.

Whether you’re looking to advance your career, learn new skills, or simply pursue a personal interest, there are options available to help you achieve your educational goals at any stage of life.

What can I do to support education in my community?

– Volunteering at a local school or library – Donating to charities and organizations that support education – Participating in school- board meetings and advocating for quality education – Mentoring and tutoring students in need – Encouraging friends and family members to prioritize education and pursue lifelong learning

What challenges does education face?

Access:  Millions of children and youth around the world lack access to quality education due to factors such as poverty, conflict, and discrimination.

Quality:  Many education systems fail to provide quality education, resulting in poor learning outcomes and limited opportunities for students.

Relevance:  Education systems often fail to adapt to the changing needs of society and the economy, leading to a skills gap and a mismatch between education and the labor market.

Equity:  Education systems often perpetuate inequality by favoring certain groups over others based on factors such as gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.

Cost:  Education can be expensive, and many individuals and families cannot afford to pay for it, leading to limited opportunities for those who need it most.

Is education a lifelong process?

Yes, education is a lifelong process. Learning does not stop when a person completes their formal education or achieves a degree.

Learning is a continuous process that can happen anytime, anywhere, and in many ways. People can continue to enrich their knowledge through books, news, podcasts, videos, and online courses.

Continuing education helps individuals pursue their interests, hobbies, or passions, leading to a better work-life balance, reducing stress, and adding meaning and fulfillment to life. It also helps individuals stay informed about social issues and participate actively as citizens.

As the world continues to evolve and new knowledge is acquired, it is vital for people to continually educate themselves to keep up with the changes around them and succeed in their personal lives and careers.

Formal Education includes institutionalized learning provided by educational institutions such as schools, colleges, and universities, while Informal Education encompasses learning that occurs outside of a formal classroom setting through various life experiences and interactions. Let’s take a closer look:

Formal Education

Formal education refers to structured learning experiences provided by educational institutions. It follows established curricula, has defined learning objectives, and often leads to recognized certifications or degrees.

Primary and Secondary Education

Primary and secondary education include traditional public and private schools, charter schools, magnet schools, and homeschooling. Traditional schools provide structured learning environments with certified teachers, comprehensive curricula, and extracurricular activities. Charter schools are independently operated and focus on specific teaching methods or themes. Magnet schools specialize in subjects like science, arts, or technology. Homeschooling allows for personalized learning at one’s own pace, with flexible schedules and customized curricula.

How Education is the gateway to achieving success in life? Reasons

Let’s find out how education brings success to our lives. know what are the appealing reasons.

1. Education builds confidence

Education builds confidence in individuals. When we obtain a good level of education, and when we know how to learn well and in a proper way, we feel confident in ourselves and in our abilities.

This is an additional self-confidence that can help us intensively in achieving our goals in life. People in positions and jobs are confident of their status and gain their employees’ trust and respect.

A fully confident person tries new things and knows that they will bring success and prosperity. But sometimes, if he does not get the desired result, he does not lose confidence and learns from his mistakes.

To be confident is good but keep in mind that we cannot know everything. Being open to learning new things and learning from others who are successful, is also important along with being assertive and decisive.

2. Thrive for the competition

If we want to be successful or successful businessmen or salespeople, our customers come without our choice, what we can do simply to go ahead of the competition. Although this is not easy yet education can do it for us. Education gives us an understanding of things as well as enables us to understand the mind of the customer.

For instance, if we get a degree in MBA, we can learn how we can boost our business and become successful. Moreover, if we specialize in marketing, we can be able to create unbelievable marketing strategies that can be shared on social media. This is a way of promoting our products or services to as many people as possible.

If we have more and more knowledge, the chances of our success will be increased. In the case of any difficulty or problem, we can find out its solution.

This can be done by learning all about it and the problem will be no more a problem for us. Those who do not consider education important, do not go forward to learn more. The likelihood, they get failure and do not bother to take the time to find out more.

3. Dreams become reality

In life, we have heard many times from people that they had wished to become this and that their dreams did not come true. They all the time expressed their regret and blamed that they should do much progress.

But this is not the case with education. Those who have completed their high school education, learn online , and specialize in a peculiar topic won’t forget that learning is a lifelong skill that will help in bringing dreams to reality.

4. Education ensures control over life

Life is ephemeral and we are not born to live forever. To make our life better and to change it can be in our control. So education can help us in changing our lives for the better one. Being a graduate, one can be able to become the manager of a firm instead of becoming an entry-level employee.

One can become a CEO or shareholder and get profits at the end of the month instead of getting a salary. With the changing passage of time, a new world would open up for us, and new, exciting opportunities will wait for us.

People can also get an opportunity to get an education from the university. We can also get sponsorship for our studies that can be tuition-free also and cannot create a barrier in our going ahead.

5. Life could be in the best phase

Education gives a better and deeper understanding of what is right, what is wrong, and what is fair and unfair as well. It helps us in building our reasoning and developing critical thinking skills. The skills are practical things that are utilized and applied to the situation in life.

Through the tool of education, we get aware of our rights and responsibilities as citizens. We can be able to make more balanced personal judgments and apply them to make the world a better place.

6. Make skilled to be employed

If we get an education at the college level, it teaches us how to manage our time, how to perform multitasking, and how to develop communication with people of different types, from class fellows to professors and from individuals to industry professionals.

These skills are important and integral to the future. If one has to go into the workplace or back into the workplace as a mature student, he will be more careful in getting interpersonal and organizational skills. These skills will help him shine at work and to cope with the challenges that he faces in the professional world.

7. Earning potential with education

It is seen that a college student earns more in his lifetime because he works with more reasoning and with a professional skill set. This happens only when one gets an education from school and college. It will also be more profitable for the student if he gets a tuition-free education.

For those students who cannot afford their studies and borrow from others, they can pay back the loan by developing their own earning sources. Along with this, there are many scholarships available for the students to cover the minimal assessment fees.

8. Its converts ideas into reality

Education is a thing that turns one’s dreams into reality. Being a college student, Mark Zuckerberg dreamed about a connected society and he invented Facebook to connect people with one another.

If one is unable to create a website, a college, or institution can provide a chance to connect with others and to change the whole world by making his dreams come true.

If anyone desires a higher salary, he must feel lucky. American Institute for Economic Research states that college students aged 25-32 earn $17,000 more every year than those who didn’t attend college, and 72% of millennials state that their degree has already paid them off. And those over 32 need not worry, they can also earn more. They are not over age and can find their dreams become one step closer to reality.

9. Confidence and staying power

A degree is certified proof of one’s intelligence. Even if one gets a certificate in a certain subject at the high school level, it is proof to show the outside world the talent and skills he has. This gives an in-depth knowledge of the subject and he can stick out a challenging scenario to the end.

He can get through the difficult time, the deadlines, and the time spent in front of the computer and madly writing the paper.  This builds confidence in himself and others to believe in him.

With all the dedicated time to studying the latest books, and papers, and learning through subjects, one can have an in-depth understanding of the subject matter. The others may have only general knowledge and do not know all these techniques for a prosperous future.

10. Education polishes financial intelligence

By getting an education at the college level, the student is able to manage his finance and can have sufficient cash in short term to bear the expenses of studies. He can do things like work out part-time and earn $100. This teaches the student the budgeting skills and economic understanding that lead him to get success in life.

11. Education channelize energy

Education helps to channel the energies. One wants to learn woodwork or business economics. He may want to learn how to sing a song or coding, he can get a chance to follow a curriculum from the beginning to the end and his energies are charged, and he achieves his targeted goals. When one learns a new skill or subject, it helps him feel more energetic, purposeful, and positive about life.

12. Education equips individuals with the skills that businesses seek

Education is an essential tool that provides students with the skills that companies are looking for. As you progress through a college degree, you learn how to manage your time, handle several tasks at the same time, interact with all kinds of people and acquire new skills that companies are seeking.

13. Education creates connections and encounters new individuals

College life is not limited to classes and peers, It builds networks with partners, alumni, and more. Joining an online community offers opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals, gain clarity on your ideas, and develop valuable communication skills. In the professional world, companies value those who can engage in online communities and effectively represent their brand.

Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education not a preparation for life; education is life itself

14. You will stay updated with evolving technologies

By enrolling in an academic program at Universities or colleges accredited university, you acquire in-demand technological skills sought after by hiring companies. Empowering your education, this digital experience becomes your pathway to success.

15. You will discover and define your career interests

Pursuing a degree helps you discover and refine your professional interests, career goals, and available opportunities. Higher education provides valuable resources, contacts, and networks to explore your chosen path. It gives you a clearer understanding of your capabilities and guides you in securing employment in your field after graduation.

16. Education enhances your time management abilities

While pursuing full-time education, you may combine various responsibilities such as work and managing household finances. The pursuit of education naturally sharpens your time management skills , a sought-after trait by global employers, ensuring a path to success amidst life’s multifaceted demands.

17. You will not be overlooked

In the past, rural societies had limited education, but now digital technologies are pervasive , emphasizing the need for basic high school qualifications in technology, communication, and global outreach. However, a high school degree is often just the starting point for entering the workforce.

10 Benefits Showing Why Education Is Important to Our Society

10 Benefits Showing Why Education Is Important to Our Society

Do you think attending school and doing projects for your college is a waste of time? If you do, you might want to reconsider that claim as education is a key part of a society’s growth and progress. When people are educated, they can significantly contribute to their families and society in various aspects and fields, thus creating a stable and stimulating community. Why is education important to society? Let’s take into account some reasons.

1. Creating More Employment Opportunities

Finding a job is not easy, especially in times of economic turmoil. You often need to compete with hundreds of other candidates for a vacant position. In addition, the lower the education level, the greater the number of people applying for the same low-paying entry-level post. However, with the right qualifications and educational background, you will increase your chances of landing a fulfilling job. Would you like to find a way to stand out from a pool of applicants? Learn, educate yourself, graduate and get as many qualifications, skills, knowledge, and experience as possible.

2. Securing a Higher Income

People with higher education and varied experience are more likely to get high-paying , expert jobs. Study hard, dedicate your time and effort to acquire knowledge and reach a high level of competence if you would like to lead a comfortable lifestyle. Your credentials are what will motivate a potential employer to choose you instead of another candidate. Studying hard throughout your school and studies shows you are not afraid of hard work and are able to fulfill your goals. Employers see this as a huge advantage as they all prefer a responsible and knowledgeable workforce. Once you graduate, you can start searching for jobs that will give you the opportunity to practice what you have learned and, at the same time, secure sufficient pay for your needs.

3. Developing Problem-solving Skills

One of the benefits of education is that the educational system teaches us how to obtain and develop critical and logical thinking and make independent decisions. When children become adults, they are faced with a lot of challenging issues – pay off your student loans, get a job, buy a car and a house, provide for your family, etc. However, if one has spent years educating themselves, they should be able to make sound decisions on these various quandaries. Not only are people able to form their own opinions, but they are also good at finding solid and reliable arguments and evidence to back up and confirm their decisions.

4. Improving the Economy

Improving the Economy

People with good academic and educational backgrounds tend to get well-paid jobs. The higher their education and accomplishments, the better employment options they get. People who grew up poor but educated themselves have high chances to transform their lives, thus contributing to a decrease in society’s poverty rates. Education helps countries grow economically since it is about getting knowledge and being able to apply it wisely to our lives and, at the same time, improving other people’s lives.

5. Providing a Prosperous and Happy Life

Education has always secured respect from society. In order to ensure a comfortable lifestyle, people should educate themselves and obtain a well-paid job to be successful and satisfied. It helps gain a better reputation and increases the chances of climbing the career ladder more easily and faster. In turn, it provides financial resources for stable lives – people can afford to buy their own house or apartment and thus secure their children’s happiness and success. Furthermore, being able to own your own home provides stability and increases self-confidence. It leads to creating a positive environment for families and communities. “Children of homeowners are 116% more likely to graduate from college than children of renters of the same age, race, and income. They are also 25% more likely to graduate from high school and have higher math and reading scores, with fewer behavioral problems,” according to research at the University of Tennessee.

6. Giving Back to the Community

How does education benefit society? Educated people understand how valuable it is to live in a stable and secure community. They are more prone to taking part in projects that help improve not only their neighborhood but society, as well. In addition, when people are able to afford their own home, they are more likely to take part not only in improving their homes but in solving local problems , as well. After all, it is quite important to get involved and give a hand to the less fortunate ones in order to build a better place for all of us to live in.

7. Creating Modern Society

Education is of key essence for modern society. One needs to learn about culture, history and other important aspects so that they would be able to contribute to modern society. Education molds people into leaders not only with knowledge about (college) subjects, but it also shows them how to lead with emotions and true values. Educated people can easily differentiate between right and wrong, thus education helps reduce the crime rate. Bad events are happening around the world – only competent leaders can help guide us down a good and right path.

8. Bridging the Borders

Digital education helps connect with people and organizations around the world. Borders are no longer there. Being able to communicate and share opinions with people from other countries and cultures, widens horizons and helps us understand and appreciate each other.

9. Creating equal opportunities

Creating equal opportunities

The importance of education in society has always been great as it is irrespective of caste, race, gender, religion. Educated people are treated as equals on the basis of their knowledge and competence. In addition to this, educated people are open-minded and are able to listen and accept other people’s views regardless of the fact of how different they are. Education offers a possibility to live independently and thus be free. It is our shelter against financial storms and wrong decisions.

10. Introducing Empowerment

Education is the key to turn a weakness into a strength. It offers different tools and ways to understand problems that lay ahead of us and helps resolve them. More importantly, education provides us with considerable mental agility to make the right decisions and spring into action when needed. Many types of research show that educated women can more easily stand up against gender bias and marital violence as they have improved their decision-making capabilities.

Whether it is about respect, a higher position in society and a professional environment, financial security, family stability, education provides all of these and much more. Home stability provided by owning your own home helps children who grew up in their own houses or apartments become more successful. They are more likely to graduate high school (25%) and finish college (116%). “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” as Nelson Mandela said. It helps people become better citizens, get a better-paid job, shows the difference between good and bad. Education shows us the importance of hard work and, at the same time, helps us grow and develop. Thus, we are able to shape a better society to live in by knowing and respecting rights, laws, and regulations. Learning languages through educational processes helps interact with different people in order to exchange ideas, knowledge, good practices. It teaches us to live in harmony.

Are you ready to give back? Help the families from your community that need it the most. Get involved , today.

What actually is a success?

Success basically refers to the achievement of the desired goals or aims after a lot of hard work. Success in career comes up after putting in all the efforts and attaining what all that is wanted by a person.

Following are some of the major reasons because of which education is referred to as the key to success.

  • Education: Getting education helps you to become educated in such a competitive world. Being in the 21st century, it is very hard for you to keep up with the ever-increasing inventions without education. Not only this, but education also allows you to become self-determining. While pursuing your education, you will definitely step into the phase where you have to write essays. If you find yourself, good at it, providing essay help to the scholars can be a way of helping and serving them.
  • Profession: One of the main aims of a person’s life is to regulate what he/she actually wants. If you know what you want in your life, making an effective ‘plan’ becomes easier. Education also teaches you how to be a selfless leader in business in order to stand strong.
  • Confidence: Definitely, becoming educated will help you gain confidence. Keep in mind that only degree won’t be helpful, instead, you need to have complete knowledge that will help you become persuasive. Make sure that success will not come to you only by conquering over a mistake or a weakness. But you also need to be smart and believe in yourself as it will help you to make wise decisions ahead. Build confidence and stay strong so that you are able to convey your ideas and thoughts to people.
  • Turn Dreams Into Reality: What actually is your dream? Do you have professional goals? Do you want to be respected by everyone? Regardless of what your aim is, and what genuinely matters is how you are going about to accomplish it.

The only answer to all the above-mentioned questions is EDUCATION. Yes, there are some exceptions where there is the least need for knowledge. Say for instance, in the case of sports, a person needs to be good in terms of physical needs. But, talking about the maximum cases, it is seen that education plays a crucial role in turning your visions into reality.

Remember that, getting an education is never too late. Once you gained the right education, it will stay with you all through your life. Thus, in order to attain success in your life, you need to begin attending your college to achieve a degree. Seeking education is a lifetime investment that will help you reap better results in life.

Furthermore, education is also important for the economic growth of the nation you are staying in.

But, trust it or not, there are a good number of people who don’t realize the importance of education. The aforementioned points definitely make clear and provide you reasons for the importance of education. Transforming lives through education

Girls at school

Transforming education to change our world

UNESCO provides global and regional leadership on all aspects of education from pre-school to higher education and throughout life. It works through its Member States and brings together governments, the private sector and civil society to strengthen education systems worldwide in order to deliver quality education for all. As a thought leader it publishes landmark reports and data for policy-makers, implements programmes on the ground from teacher training to emergency responses and establishes and monitors norms and standards for all to guide educational developments.

Right to education in a ruined world

Southern Italy, 1950. Three children are huddled around a makeshift desk made out of reclaimed wood, scribbling in their notebooks. The classroom has an earthen floor and roughly clad walls. The children’s clothes are ragged. They are wearing home-made slippers because shoes and the money to buy them are rare commodities in the war-ravaged south.

Although World War II ended five years earlier, the scars of conflict are still visible in this black and white photo from a report commissioned by UNESCO from legendary photojournalist David Seymour.

At the time when the photograph was taken, less than half of Italy’s population could read and write and just a third completed primary school. 70 years later, these children’s grandchildren enjoy an over 99% literacy rate. In the wake of the war, UNESCO led a major education campaign in Europe to respond to the education crisis, to rebuild links between people and to strengthen democracy and cultural identities after years of conflict. The emphasis then was on the fundamental learning skill of literacy.

Immediately after World War two UNESCO led a major education campaign in Europe to respond to the education crisis, fix and rebuild links between people and strengthen cultural identities after years of conflict. David Seymour’s images show the extent of the fight against illiteracy led by the post-war Italian government and non-governmental organisations backed by UNESCO.

Looking back at the deprived surroundings Seymour captured in his photo essay, one can see the extent of success. Seventy-one years later, those children’s grandchildren enjoy a 99.16 per cent literacy rate.

Similar programmes were held across the globe, for instance in devastated Korea where UNESCO led a major education textbook production programme in the 1950s. Several decades after, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations and Korean citizen Ban Ki-Moon expressed the importance of such a programme for the country's development:

The flowering of literacy

In a Korea devastated by war and where UNESCO led a major education textbook production programme in the 1950s, one student, Ban Ki-Moon, now Former Secretary-General of the United Nations, saw the world open up to him through the pages of a UNESCO textbook. Several decades after, he expressed the importance of such a programme for his country's development on the world stage.

Reaching the remote villages perched atop the Andes in Peru during the early 1960s wasn’t without its challenges for UNESCO’s technical assistance programme to bring literacy to disadvantaged communities. While Peru’s economy was experiencing a prolonged period of expansion, not all Peruvians were able to benefit from this growth which was limited to the industrialised coast. Instead, Andes communities were grappling with poverty, illiteracy and depopulation.

Today, the number of non-literate youths and adults around the world has decreased dramatically, while the global literacy rate for young people aged 15-24 years has reached 92 %. These astonishing successes reflect improved access to schooling for younger generations.

Photojournalist Paul Almasy has left us the poignant image of a barefoot older man while he’s deciphering a newspaper thanks to his newfound literacy skills.

The classroom at the UNESCO mission in Chinchera, in the Andean highlands of Peru, had allowed the old man to discover the world beyond his tiny village.

However, there are still huge obstacles to overcome. Data from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics shows that 617 million children and adolescents worldwide are not achieving minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics. Since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 it is still the case that globally more than 450 million children - six out of 10 - have failed to gain basic literacy skills by the age of 10. And beyond literacy programmes, massive investments in skills for work and life, teacher training, and education policies are needed in a world that is changing ever faster.

Global priorities

Africa, home to the world’s youngest population, is not on track to achieve the targets of SDG 4. Sub-Saharan Africa alone is expected to account for 25% of the school-age population by 2030, up from 12% in 1990, yet it remains the region with the highest out-of-school rates. Girls are more likely to be permanently excluded from education than boys. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated inequalities, with 89% of learners not having access to computers and 82% lacking internet access to benefit from distance learning. The lack of trained teachers further jeopardizes progress towards SDG4: pre-pandemic only 64% of whom were trained at the primary level and 58% at the lower secondary level.

As part of its Priority Africa Flagship 2022 – 2029 , UNESCO has launched Campus Africa: Reinforcing Higher Education in Africa with the objective to build integrated, inclusive, and quality tertiary education systems and institutions, for the development of inclusive and equitable societies on the continent.

Gender

There are immense gender gaps when it comes to access, learning achievement and education, most often at the expense of girls and women. It is estimated that some 127 million girls are out of school around the world. For many girls and women around the world, the classroom remains an elusive, often forbidden space. UNESCO monitors the educational rights of girls and women around the world and shares information on the legal progress toward securing the right to education for women in all countries. Despite important progress in recent decades, the right to education is still far from being a reality for many girls and women. Discriminatory practices stand in the way of girls and women fully exercising their right to participate in, complete, and benefit from education. And while girls have difficulty with access, boys face increasing challenges, and particularly disengagement , from education at later stages. Globally only 88 men are enrolled in tertiary education for every 100 women. In 73 countries, fewer boys than girls are enrolled in upper-secondary education.

UNESCO's Her Atlas analyzes the legal frameworks of nearly 200 states to track which laws are enabling---or inhibiting---the right to education for girls and women. This interactive world map uses a color-coded scoring system to monitor 12 indicators of legal progress towards gender equality in the right to education.

Monitoring the right to education for girls and women

What makes me proud is that soon I will finish building a new house. I have already been able to buy a cow and I will soon be able to have another pond

Madagascar’s coastal Atsinanana region is known for its lush rainforests and fish breeding.

The country has a young population, but only one out of three children can complete primary education. Among those who are able to finish primary school, only 17% have minimum reading skills, while just a fifth of them have basic maths competencies. Once they leave school, children face a precarious labour market and unstable jobs, just like their parents.

Natacha Obienne is only 21 years old, but she is already in charge of a small fish farm, a career that is usually pursued by men. As one of the many out-of-school women in her area, she was able to set up her own business after vocational training taught her the basics of financial management and entrepreneurship, as well as the practicalities of breeding fish.

She understood that fish feeding depends on the temperature of the water. If it’s well managed, a higher number of fish is produced. ‘I immediately applied everything I learnt’ she says.

The classroom she attended changed the course of her life and she hopes other young people will follow in her footsteps.

I no longer depend on my parents and I am financially independent

She’s not alone. Around 3,000 youths in Madagascar have been trained since the start of the UNESCO-backed programme, some of whom have set up their own business and achieved financial independence. Education was the best way to ease people's emancipation.

Like Emma Claudia, 25, who after her vocational training started a restaurant with just a baking tray and a saucepan.

What does my family think? They are surprised and amazed by my evolution because I haven’t been able to complete my studies. I don’t have any school diplomas.

While Natacha and Emma Claudia have been able to transform their world through education, millions of children out of school around the world are still denied that dream.

Discrimination against girls remains widespread and nearly one billion adults, mostly women, are illiterate. The lack of qualified teachers and learning materials continues to be the reality in too many schools.

Challenging these obstacles is getting harder as the world grapples with the acceleration of climate change, the emergence of digitization and artificial intelligence, and the increasing exclusion and uncertainty brought by the Covid-19 pandemic.

We resumed school a while ago and it’s been stressful. We are trying to retrieve what we lost during quarantine, the worst thing about not being in school is the number of things you miss. Learning behind a screen and learning in person are incomparable.

Aicha is lucky to be able to continue her education. Her country has the highest rate of out-of-school children in the world – 10.5 million – and nearly two-thirds are women. To compound the problem, Nigeria’s northern states suffer from the violence that targets education.

In Russia, too, Alexander and his school friends had to cope with virtual learning and the lack of interactions.

All Russian students were moved to online studying. Needless to say, it was a rough year for all of us, several friends were struggling with depressive moods. They were missing their friends and teachers. So did I.

To protect their right to education during this unprecedented disruption and beyond, UNESCO has launched the Global Education Coalition , a platform for collaboration and exchange that brings together more than 175 countries from the UN family, civil society, academia and the private sector to ensure that learning never stops.

Building skills where they are most needed

Crouched over a pedal-powered sewing machine, Harikala Buda looks younger than her 30 years. Her slim fingers fold a cut of turquoise brocade before deftly pushing it under the needle mechanism.

Harikala lives in rural Nepal, where many villagers, particularly women, don’t have access to basic education. Women like Harikala rely on local community UNESCO-supported learning centres to receive literacy and tailoring skills. In a country where 32% of people over 15 are illiterate, particularly women and those living in rural areas, education is the only route to becoming self-reliant.

I have saved a small amount. My husband’s income goes towards running the house, mine is saved. We must save today to secure our children’s future

Having access to a classroom is the first step to creating a better world for the student, the student’s children and the student’s community. This is a lesson that matters a lot to

Kalasha Khadka Khatri, a 30-year-old Nepali mother. She grew up in a family of 21, with no option to go to school. Two of her children didn’t survive infancy because she was unable to pay for medical treatment. After acquiring sewing skills at her local community learning centre, Kalasha can now provide for her family.

Harikala and Kalasha were able to learn their skills through the support of the UNESCO’s Capacity Development for Education Programme (CapED), an initiative that operates in some 26 least-developed and fragile countries.

Reimagining the future of education

As the world slowly recovers after the COVID-19 crisis, 244 million children and youth worldwide are still out of school. And a 2022 survey by UNESCO, UNICEF, World Bank and OECD finds that one quarter of countries have yet to collect information on children who have and have not returned to school since the pandemic started.

Rebuilding how and where we learn requires policy advice, stronger education legislation, funds mobilisation, advocacy, targeted programme implementation based on sound analysis, statistics and global information sharing. Quality education also calls for the teaching of skills far beyond literacy and maths, including critical thinking against fake news in the digital era, living in harmony with nature and the ethics of artificial intelligence, to name a few of the critical skills needed in the 21st century.

UNESCO  captured the debate around the futures of education in its landmark report from 2022 entitled Reimagining our futures together: A new social contract for education.

The Transformative Education Summit , that took place during the United Nations General Assembly in September 2022, as well as the Pre-Summit hosted by UNESCO to forge new approaches to education after the COVID-19 crisis, address the toughest bottlenecks to achieving SDG 4 and inspire young people to lead a global movement for education. World leaders committed to put education at the top of the political agenda. UNESCO has been mobilizing and consulting all stakeholders and partners to galvanize the transformation of every aspect of learning. UNESCO launched a number of key initiatives such as expanding public digital learning, making education responsive to the climate and environmental emergency, and improving access for crisis-affected children and youth.

The two children sitting at their makeshift desk in Italy in 1950 could not have imagined what a modern learning space might look like or how a modern curriculum or the tools and teacher training to deliver it might have been thought out and shaped to offer them the most from education. They could not have imagined the global drive to ensure that everyone was given a chance to learn throughout life. The only thing that has not changed since the photo was taken is the fact that education remains a fundamental and universal human right that can change the course of a life. To the millions still living in conditions of poverty, exclusion displacement and violence it opens a door to a better future.

Education is Fundamental to Development and Growth

Elizabeth king.

Image

Education is fundamental to development and growth. The human mind makes possible all development achievements, from health advances and agricultural innovations to efficient public administration and private sector growth. For countries to reap these benefits fully, they need to unleash the potential of the human mind. And there is no better tool for doing so than education.

Twenty years ago, government officials and development partners met to affirm the importance of education in development—on economic development and broadly on improving people’s lives—and together declared Education for All as a goal. While enrolments have risen in promising fashion around the world, learning levels have remained disappointingly and many remain left behind. Because growth, development, and poverty reduction depend on the knowledge and skills that people acquire, not the number of years that they sit in a classroom, we must transform our call to action from Education for All to Learning for All.

The World Bank’s forthcoming Education Strategy will emphasize several core ideas: Invest early. Invest smartly. Invest in learning for all .

First, foundational skills acquired early in childhood make possible a lifetime of learning. The traditional view of education as starting in primary school takes up the challenge too late. The science of brain development shows that learning needs to be encouraged early and often, both inside and outside of the formal schooling system. Prenatal health and early childhood development programs that include education and health are consequently important to realize this potential. In the primary years, quality teaching is essential to give students the foundational literacy and numeracy on which lifelong learning depends. Adolescence is also a period of high potential for learning, but many teenagers leave school at this point, lured by the prospect of a job, the need to help their families, or turned away by the cost of schooling. For those who drop out too early, second-chance and nonformal learning opportunities are essential to ensure that all youth can acquire skills for the labor market.

Second, getting results requires smart investments —that is, investments that prioritize and monitor learning, beyond traditional metrics, such as the number of teachers trained or number of students enrolled. Quality needs to be the focus of education investments, with learning gains as the key metric of quality.  Resources are too limited and the challenges too big to be designing policies and programs in the dark. We need evidence on what works in order to invest smartly.

Third, learning for all means ensuring that all students, and not just the most privileged or gifted, acquire the knowledge and skills that they need. Major challenges of access remain for disadvantaged populations at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. We must lower the barriers that keep girls, children with disabilities, and ethnolinguistic minorities from attaining as much education as other population groups. “Learning for All” promotes the equity goals that underlie Education for All and the MDGs. Without confronting equity issues, it will be impossible to achieve the objective of learning for all.

Achieving learning for all will be challenging, but it is the right agenda for the next decade. It is the knowledge and skills that children and youth acquire today—not simply their school attendance—that will drive their employability, productivity, health, and well-being in the decades to come, and that will help ensure that their communities and nations thrive.

6 Reasons Why Education is the Key to Success

June 30, 2020 by Steph Leave a Comment

All of us are born with a unique bundle of gifts and talents. Our success in life usually depends on how much we trust in ourselves, nurture that trust, and help it to grow. Education can provide us with the knowledge we need to realize and utilize our talents, whilst also giving us the skills we need to be able to think and solve problems on our own. Success and education are both relative concepts in the sense that there’s a huge difference of opinion around what is real success and what is real education.

Real education enables a person to think for themselves and be able to put what they’ve learned into practice. Simply remembering facts and being able to repeat them isn’t being educated. You need to be able to make decisions for yourself without being told how to do so by someone else.

A good education will teach you how to communicate with others effectively as well as how to overcome any potential problems you may face in the future. Read these Everglades University testimonials to find out why you should consider continuing your education here.

Education can help you achieve success in a number of different ways including:

A Happy Life

If you want to be able to enjoy some of the good things the world has to offer, then you’ll definitely want to obtain an education. A good social reputation and a great job are just some of the benefits of an educated individual. Education is important for anyone looking for a stable and secure future and life.

A person who is educated is more likely to land a higher paying job than someone who has very few qualifications. Money isn’t everything but it is extremely important for our survival. The more educated you become, the better career prospects you’ll have and the more money you’re likely to earn.

Becoming Self-Dependent

If you want to be able to take care of yourself, then gaining an education can help you with this. Not only does it help you become financially stable, but it also gives you the knowledge you need to make decisions on your own.

Make Your Dreams Come True

We all have a dream that we’d like to achieve in the future. Maybe you want to be successful in a specific field of medicine, or maybe you want to be popular. Whatever your dream, the key to attaining it is education. Of course, not everyone has to have an education in order to achieve their dreams, but in most cases, it helps a lot.

Makes You More Confident

People who gain a higher education are more likely to be listened to by others. In most cases, uneducated individuals will find it much harder to express their opinions due to their lack of confidence . Education can give you the confidence you need in order to do this.

Stops You From Being Exploited

Having an education can help stop other people from exploiting you . People find it much easier to take advantage of uneducated individuals, as they are less likely to know their rights.

The importance of education cannot be stated enough. It’s crucial to the development of an individual and society in general. Education provides us with the knowledge we need to progress, sets us up for a good career, helps to build our character, and also helps to build a stronger nation. These are all reasons why education is the key to success.

Education Is the Key to Better Jobs

Few issues are more critical than putting Americans back to work. With the economy adding private-sector jobs for the last 30 consecutive months and the unemployment rate continuing to tick down, another concern has begun to dominate the discussion. Is it enough to find a job, or should we be more focused on the quality of that job? For those Americans who have been displaced in the workforce, what are their prospects of finding comparable employment in the 21st century, post-recession economy? After all, having a job—any job—does not guarantee a wage that will support a family. How, then, can we foster an economy that produces quality, high-paying jobs?

There may be a range of perspectives on the best way to move our economy forward, but one element essential to any answer is education. It may seem intuitive that more educated people earn more, yet the extent to which this is true is striking. A picture is often worth a thousand words, and the graph below illustrates this point.

sept chart

The horizontal axis measures income while the vertical axis breaks up the income level by education level. As we move to the right toward higher incomes, we see that college graduates make up a bigger and bigger chunk of those earners. A few numbers help to underscore this. Those with only a high school diploma accounted for 39 percent of those who made between $20,000 and $30,000, but just 8 percent of those earning more than $100,000. In contrast, college graduates only accounted for 18 percent of the $20,000-to-$30,000 group and 75 percent of people earning more than $100,000, despite the population of these two educational demographic groups being roughly equal.

The message is clear—more education opens the gateway to better, higher-paying jobs. To put this into perspective, consider this:

  • An individual with only a high school diploma is twice as likely to make under $40,000 per year than someone with a college degree.
  • In contrast, an individual with a college degree is nearly nine times more likely to make over $100,000 than someone with only a high school diploma and 13 times more likely to make more than $200,000 per year.

On September 27th, The Hamilton Project will host an event focusing on the value of education, and opportunities to promote attainment and achievement in our K-12 system. We will release a series of economic facts about K-12 education in addition to three new discussion papers by outside authors— “Staying in School: A Proposal to Raise High School Graduation Rates,” “Learning from the Successes and Failures of Charter Schools,” and “Harnessing Technology to Improve K-12 Education.” Focusing on the new papers, three panels of distinguished experts will explore the value of stricter and better-enforced attendance laws, in coordination with other programs, to increase the high school graduation rate; the use of new evidence to demonstrate how targeted charter school methods could be successfully applied in public schools; and a new approach to evaluating education technologies to help speed the development of valuable new products.

The new Hamilton Project papers will be available on September 27th at 9:00 AM ET. For more information or to register for the event, click here .

The Importance of a Good Education to Success in Life

grtgrgrey

There is little doubt that in today’s information-heavy world, the need for a high-quality education is essential. Nearly every good job is tied to having one and also our ability to truly understand important issues and concepts relating to the quality of our lives is directly compared to how we have been taught and what we have been exposed to in our lives.

Key reasons why a good education is critical

  • Provides one with the essential skills needed in life.
  • Assists an individual in making better decisions in life.
  • Helps one to ascertain the difference between what is good and bad and right and wrong.
  • For countries, education provides economic growth and a cohesive society.
  • People tend to have more fulfilling and longer careers.
  • Earn higher pay and excel farther and faster in their careers.
  • Education is probably the most effective single tool for reducing poverty and inequality and provides the primary foundation for upward financial mobility.
  • Educated folks tend to have more successful and productive children.

Getting a good education

Good education should start at a child’s earliest age . During these formative years, parents need to do all they can to teach the child about the world, employing learning devices and strategies that are proven to aid young people in their emotional and intellectual development. Approaches including role-playing, interactive toys, intermingling with other young children, and teaching young people to read and count, stimulate the parts of young brains responsible for learning, and prepare them to become good learners throughout their lives.

Good education should continue with young people attending the best schools. Parents need to make a concerted effort to steer their children to the best education they can afford. This means finding great schools and teachers who can guide their kids through a learning journey where they both teach them and instill in them a love for learning.

When they become teenagers, parents should strongly consider enrolling them in private schools, which offer the best quality educations available. Private schools can be costly, but their benefits to young people are unquestionable. They incorporate the top teaching curriculums and hire the best teachers and administrators. Further, they create a set of expectations for young people that propel them toward success.

The best version of private schools is a private boarding high school . These specials schools offer a completely immersive learning environment for students. There are no outside distractions and an opportunity for them to study their schoolwork with other students who are also focusing on getting a great education. Boarding schools give parents peace of mind that their kid’s education is the focus of their lives at this critical age.

Following a great high school education, education can include higher learning institutions like universities or technical colleges. These institutions offer more specialized learning and deeper studies on an endless variety of topics.

Finally, throughout life, we should continue to educate ourselves by traveling to other places and continuing our schooling. Experiencing different cultures, environments, and learning environments can really broaden your horizons. Learning and speaking different languages can be a very valuable life skill.

Many organizations around the world have affirmed that a good education is a basic human right and not a privilege. Nearly every country struggles to provide quality education for their young people because they understand the role it plays in a high quality life. When given the opportunity to learn, people are empowered to contribute fully to the advancement of their lives, their communities, and their countries.

Although there are several incredible benefits to a receiving a good education, perhaps the most important one is that it makes one a better person in all aspects of life.

The sooner the better: early childhood education, a key to life-long success.

“The sooner the better” is the perfect tag line for early childhood education. There is no magic bullet to ensure a lifetime of self-fulfillment in personal and career terms. But rigorous research shows that high-quality early childhood education is an extraordinarily powerful means to promote continued success in school, in the workplace, and also in social and civic realms.

It may seem surprising, but the experiences of children in their early years have disproportionately large impacts relative to experiences during their school years and beyond. If children lag in those early years, chances are that they will never catch up. Remediation of deficiencies in learning of all types is far more difficult and expensive than learning early on. The good news is that high-quality programs focused on early childhood years can have powerful long-term impacts for all racial and economic groups across the country.

Professor Susanna Loeb at the Stanford Graduate School of Education , in collaboration with Daphna Bassok, wrote an extensive review covering studies on early childhood education and achievement gaps based on it. The White House issued a report last December that also summarizes research from a wide variety of studies, and includes proposed actions to meet national needs in this arena.

Perhaps the most often cited study is the HighScope Perry preschool experiment that assigned randomly 123 at-risk low income black students to either a control group or a high-quality, two year pre-school program. These students were followed from ages three through 50. The impact of the pre-school program was powerful. Of those who participated in the program, 65% graduated from high school compared to 45% in the control group. By age 40, the annual income of those who were in the program was $20,800 compared to $15,300 in the control group. As the Loeb and Bassok article states, the study showed that those in the program “were more likely to be employed, to raise their own children, to own a home or a car, and to be far less likely to experience arrests or utilize drugs.”

Another study examines kindergarten test scores to predict whether children will attend college (and the quality of the colleges if they do), the earnings of those children as young adults, and many other adult outcomes.

Research also shows that high-quality early childhood programs lead to income gains of 1/3 to 3.5 percent each year when the children are adults. That may not seem like much. But compounded, the higher earnings account for between $9,000 and over $30,000 when the program costs are subtracted. Viewed nationwide, if all families were able to enroll their children in pre-school programs at the same rate as high-income families do now, the total enrollment nationwide would increase by around 13 percent and would yield a present value of at least $4.8 billion – some estimates approximate this number as high as $16.1 billion – from the lifetime earnings per person after deducting the costs of the program. High-quality early childhood education programs provide long-term benefits that far outweigh the costs.

But there is more. Studies also shows that if children are enrolled in these programs, the overall economy will be boasted by a more skilled workforce with higher earnings. If all adults have a kick-start through high-quality early childhood education, our entire society benefits. Fewer people will need welfare support, crime rates decrease, and our population as a whole will be healthier.

High-quality early childhood education is not a magic bullet to ensure that those participating will be destined to be successful in and out of school for the rest of their lives. Lots of other factors have real impact. But the evidence is overwhelming that the social and economic benefits of high-quality early education for children are both substantial and lasting. And they benefit not just the children who participate, but also our society as a whole.

It is no surprise, therefore, that groups across the country have mobilized to promote high-quality early childhood education. They realize that programs too often serve high-income families, while low-income families are left out. Sadly, less than a third of all four-year old children have access to early childhood programs even though they exist in 40 states. Early Edge California is one organization that addresses the problem in our country’s largest state.

Many faith-based groups are also partnering with these organizations. One is Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos, California, where Tom Ehrlich and his wife, Ellen are members. Congregation Beth Am has chosen high-quality early childhood education as the single Congregation-wide societal issue on which it focuses attention. Some congregants are volunteering in local classrooms with underprivileged students. Others are engaged in a program called “ 10 Books A Home ,” through which they bring books and reading to the homes of disadvantaged children. And some are focused on advocacy at the local, state, and national levels to bring more support to high-quality early childhood education.

The message should be clear. Wise investments in high-quality early childhood education can mean profoundly better lives for children, their families, and our society as a whole. Consider what you can do in your community or state — and then act!
