Writer's Digest's "101 Best Websites For Writers" Issue, 2020

Hello dear readers! I just got such a great thing in the mail today (I don't know about you, but getting the mail these days feels like an adventure!)--the May/June 2020 issue of Writer's Digest . It was the last issue that I helmed as Editor-in-Chief, before handing the baton to the top-notch Amy Jones, and moving into my role as Editor-at-Large.

Every year WD does its 101 Best Websites for Writers feature (and how great does WD's own brand new website look!?). It's a ton of work to put together; Managing Editor Cassandra Lipp did an amazing job with it. As I page through, I see the sites of publishing pros who I got to know in my time at WD--like the incomparable Jane Friedman , who knows so much about publishing I am not sure how she ever actually gets any sleep; and Carla Hoch, whose site, FightWrite , teaches you how to write the most realistic fight scenes. She's a dynamo! And some of my own favorite sites to read are here too, like the ever-hilarious Points in Case --if you're a humor writer or fan, you need to check them out.

I am also so excited to see the finished product of the WD interview. Writer Cedric Rose did a fantastic job interviewing the hilarious Jenny Lawson. I will be reading this one today.

I learned so much when I was editor at WD; but more than that, I met so many amazing people--new writers, famous writers, publishing pros, the WD staff themselves....I'll be unpacking my experience there for the rest of my life, I'm sure. If you're a subscriber, you know already what a valuable resource it is. If you're not a subscriber, you should be. Each issue is so full of good info for writers. And their website should be a daily read for you, too. And yes, I am completely biased about this.

Having just marked their 50th anniversary, AWP is one of the premier authorities on writing. The AWP website provides resources and ample opportunities for authors, teachers, and students at every point in their career. 3. Creativity Portal

This is a wonderful hub for helpful resources that has been around for a whopping nineteen years! Here you can find writing prompts, creative coaching, printable writing templates, and interviews with authors that will help nourish the right side of your brain.

4. Daily Writing Tips

As the name suggests, this site offers daily writing tips ranging from open-ended prompts and exercises to grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. It also covers all writing levels and professions , so it doesn't matter how far along you are in your writing career — DWT is sure to help you out.

Instead of spending thousands of dollars on a master’s degree, you can get your own "DIY MFA" right here! This site (founded by Gabriela Pereira ) aims to cover everything you would learn in a graduate program, while giving you the freedom to choose your own areas of concentration and allocate your time as you please. 

6. Electric Literature

While not exactly a craft-focused website — so no straight-up writing advice or prompts — this nonprofit digital publisher showcases literature-related essays, criticism, and recommended readings. If you're looking to brush up on both literary theory and recent literary trends, Electric Lit is the place for you.

7. Fiction University

This virtual university, run by award-winning author Janice Hardy, contains tons of advice and concrete examples to help authors build a strong writing foundation. It's full of blog posts by professionals who share their own processes and techniques, providing tips not just on what you should do as a writer, but on how  to make it happen.

8. Helping Writers Become Authors

If you're active in writerly circles on social media, you've probably already heard of fan favorite Chill Subs. 13. LitRejections

14. Live Write Thrive

In this website by professional writer and editor C.S. Lakin, you’ll find plenty of nuanced writing anecdotes and tips. Lakin also supplies annotated critiques that can help you prep your book for publication.

15. NaNoWriMo

Besides serving as the official information hub for NaNoWriMo, this site also lends constant support for those struggling to "win" National Novel Writing Month . Make sure to check out the NaNoWriMo forums, which are chock-full of other people's personal writing tips and strategies to get you through November — and every other month of the year — as a writer.

16. Now Novel

This comprehensive website, founded by author Bridget McNulty , is a go-to for just about every writing-related question you might have. Here you'll also find advice, courses, and even an author dashboard where you can keep track of your own writing progress.

17. Positive Writer

If you often feel uncertain about your creative abilities, this is the site for you. Bryan Hutchinson created Positive Writer to encourage and inspire all those who want to write, no matter how much experience or confidence they have.

18. ProWritingAid

The Independent Publishing Magazine has been honoured as one of Writer’s Digest 101 Best Websites for Writers in the May/June edition of their magazine . This is the third year in a row TIPM has made the list and of course we are delighted to hear about the continued recognition and support from our readers and subscribers. For the last 17 years Writer’s Digest has compiled the 101 Best Websites for Writers;  organized into eight categories, it  lists the best online resources for writing and publishing advice, classes, community and more.

One of the best websites for writers!

Writer’s Digest is the premiere magazine for writers. And by premiere, I mean it’s sort of a big deal (aff link).

So, when I found out that Writing Forward had been chosen as one of the “101 Best Websites for Writers,” I was perfectly speechless.

When I regained my vocabulary, it was just jumbled. What does one say to something like this?

Best Websites for Writers

Every year, Writer’s Digest accepts suggestions for websites to be included on this prestigious list. This year, over 2700 entries were received and then narrowed down to just 101 of the very best.

The list is organized by category: challenges/creativity, general resources, agent blogs, publishing resources, jobs and markets, writing communities, genres/niches, and fun for writers.

Writing Forward is listed under “Writing Communities,” which sweetens the honor, since the writing community is what drives this blog and keeps me going week after week.

Melissa, being selected by Writer’s Digest” is quite an honor, and I join the others in congradulating you. I look forward to being a better writer with your insightful “Writing Tips and Ideas”.

Although I am a late-blooming aspiring author at 82, I am hopeful I still have time to make my mark. So far, I have POD published “Whispering Pines, a 795 page family saga from the Civil War to the present. While my book, published in November 2009, remains a “sleeper”, I am still encouraged by the feed-back from several prolific readers; so much so, that I am now writing a sequel to be followed by a memoir to tie the two novels with my real life. Unlike young aspiring authors, my objective is to live longer, motivated by my noble mission to succeed as a writer. Perhaps too lofty of a goal; nevertheless, I shall have fun trying even if I only succeed in living longer. (LOL)

Point of view for writers: first person epistolary.

• 1. Write excellent, life-changing work

• 3. Write to a specific audience
• 4. Hone the craft so that your piece is better than everyone else's
• 5. Elicit an emotional response from the reader
• First Person
• Second person
• Third person
• Objective 
• Fourth person

Great example and one I'll return to.
