Insider Today

Ten years ago, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings first publicly released his company's culture deck. In more than 120 slides, Netflix broke down its management and cultural philosophy to prepare potential recruits for what it would be like to work with the then DVD-by-mail operation.

The presentation, previously used as an internal onboarding document for new hires, offered a peek into the culture of the growing tech operation, which is now worth more than $125 billion and employs about 7,100 people around the world.

Some aspects of Netflix's management philosophy instantly stirred up controversy , like its high-performance culture, lack of a formal vacation policy, and aversion to "brilliant jerks."

But the document also set an example for other employers, who have since adopted some of its aspects, or begun formalizing and being more transparent about their own cultures.

Top Facebook exec Sheryl Sandberg once said the deck "may well be the most important document ever to come out of the Valley."

Netflix regularly updates its culture and management philosophy in a memo on its website . But the document retains many of the core principles of the original deck.

"The Netflix culture deck, when it came out, was certainly an innovative way to approach a corporate culture," Jodi Chavez, the president of staffing agency Randstad Professionals' life sciences division, as well as its executive search arm, Tatum, told Business Insider. "The majority of ideas in the deck are still very relevant today."

Here are the 10 most impactful takeaways of the culture deck that was published in 2009.

Vacation: "There is no policy or tracking"

presentation of netflix

Unlimited vacation is pretty common in workplaces today, especially in the tech sector.

But in 2009, it was still radical for a company to buck the tradition of allotting employees specified amounts of vacation days and tracking the time they took off.

Around 2004, a few years after Netflix went public, management decided to simplify its processes by scrapping its standard paid-time-off policy and allowing employees to take whatever time they felt was appropriate, as Patty McCord, coauthor of the Netflix culture deck and the company's former chief talent officer, described in Harvard Business Review .

Netflix says in its culture deck that since it didn't track the hours employees spend responding to work emails or working on projects on nights and weekends, during their personal time, there was no sense tracking their time off either.

People should be able to set their own work hours, and police their own vacation time, as long as they are able to do good work. "We should focus on what people get done, not on how many days worked," the deck says.

The company encourages management to set that precedent by taking vacation themselves, and telling the rest of their teams to do the same.

Unlimited vacation or honors-system-style policies have become more common in other workplaces as well, recruiters say.

"At Netflix, employees not only have control over their work hours but also have unlimited vacation," Chavez, at Randstad, said. "That's a policy growing in popularity with many companies, as it does give people more freedom to work and live the way they choose."

Process can hurt more than it helps

presentation of netflix

As with vacation tracking, the Netflix culture deck points out that too much process can get in the way of people being able to do their jobs efficiently.

The 2009 culture deck says there is "good" process that helps people get more work done, and "bad" process that can be a hindrance, even if it's designed to prevent mistakes.

For a company like Netflix, which is constantly adapting to evolving shifts in consumer behavior, those bad processes can be fatal.

In another slide, Netflix points out that process can be great, until technology, new competition, or other factors shift the market:

"Company is unable to adapt quickly because employees are extremely good at following the existing processes, and process adherence is the value system," the slide says. "Company generally grinds painfully into irrelevance."

Cofounder and founding CEO Marc Randolph thinks Netflix's ability to adapt quickly, which stems from its culture, has set it apart from other media companies that are moving into streaming today, like Disney and WarnerMedia, and helped it survive against Blockbuster during the DVD era. It has proven itself willing to abandon what's working if a better process or business model presents itself, he said.

"Freedom and responsibility"

presentation of netflix

Where Facebook has "move fast and break things" and Google has "don't be evil," Netflix's cultural motto is "freedom and responsibility."

The idea is to hire talented people who are self-disciplined, and then get out of their way.

The deck says that the best way for Netflix to attract and nurture innovative people as it grows is to give them freedom. As such, it wants fewer rules, not more.

But it can only do that if its employees are responsible, self-motivated people; the type of people who pick up trash when they see it lying on the floor, as another slide in the deck says.

Netflix's vacation policy is one way the company gives employees the freedom to be responsible for their own time off.

Another example is its expense policy. Employees can expense whatever they think is fair, but are encouraged to act in the company's best interest, such as only spending as much as they normally would while traveling, or disclosing gifts sizable gifts from vendors.

"If you're careful to hire people who will put the company's interests first, who understand and support the desire for a high-performance workplace, 97% of your employees will do the right thing," McCord wrote, in Harvard Business Review .

An insistence on "high performance"

presentation of netflix

Netflix's ethos of freedom and responsibility ties into a culture insistent on "high performance."

The Netflix deck compares the video company to a professional sports team. Every employee should be playing at the top of their own fields. That means hiring and supporting top performers, and routinely firing those that don't measure up.

The culture can be intimidating to some staffers. It's not an environment for everyone, the document says. "Some people, however, value job security and stability over performance, and don't like our culture," another slide says. "They feel fearful at Netflix."

The candor in the culture deck was surprising when it was first released, though likely not surprising to anyone who had worked at Netflix, where honesty was a top value.

"It was unique that they were willing to share that with the masses," Ryan Sutton, a district president at Robert Half Technology, a staffing firm, told Business Insider. "It's different to truly take what is an internal look and put it out to the world."

The slide says the company is trying to get better at hiring only people who thrive in its high performance culture, which may have been part of the motivation for releasing the culture document.

"When we pushed it to the internet, we didn't do it so that everyone could read our treatise and copy the way we worked," McCord said during an August webinar hosted by Business Insider . "We did it so that our candidates could get a brief overview of what it would be like to work at Netflix and it would change our interview cycle."

Adequate employees get the axe

presentation of netflix

Netflix's obsession with high performance means that merely meeting expectations isn't good enough.

"Adequate performance gets a generous severance package," the document says.

The company typically offers four months of full pay to salaried employees who are fired.

Routine firings also free up cash for Netflix to pay its other employees top dollar. "One outstanding employee gets more done and costs less than two adequate employees," another slide says. "We endeavor to have only outstanding employees."

This slide may have seemed bold when Netflix published it, but staffing professionals in the tech sector say it was a common practice at many tech companies, whether they publicly stated it or not.

"They wanted to be a leading company that was revolutionary, and in order to the accomplish that they needed top talent," Sutton, at Robert Half Technology, said. "Where did anything start in culture? Was this something that Netflix branded per se, or the culmination of a lot of really good entrepreneur techniques that companies had been refining for years, all the way back to Steve Jobs and Apple?"

The "keeper test"

presentation of netflix

Netflix has a method for weeding out adequate or underperforming employees. It's called the "keeper test."

Even today, it is one of the more controversial aspects of the streaming company's culture.

The keeper test requires managers to ask themselves, how hard they would fight to keep a given employee if they were leaving for a competitor. People they would not fight to keep are fired.

There are no quotas for how many people managers need to fire, but they're told to conduct the keeper test regularly. Employees are also encouraged to frequently ask their managers to ask the keeper question to learn where they stand.

The Wall Street Journal reported in 2018 that the test created a culture of fear within Netflix. One former employee told the publication he was constantly anxious about getting fired, and ultimately quit after a few years at the company.

Others appeared to have no hard feelings over being fired. Netflix's longtime chief product officer, Neil Hunt, for example, failed the keeper test in 2017 and was cut from the company. He told the Journal he had to "separate the emotion from the logic" to understand the decision.

Netflix told the Journal that employees are only fired for performance reasons.

Radical transparency

presentation of netflix

Honesty is at the heart of Netflix's culture. It values radical transparency, about as much as it insists on high performance.

Netflix often follows up firings with emails and meetings explaining why that person got fired to their relevant teams, the Journal reported .

Those emails can seem harsh, but they stem from the example that cofounders Hastings and Randolph set at Netflix early on.

Randolph, Netflix's first CEO, described in his memoir, "That Will Never Work: The Birth of Netflix and the Amazing Life of an Idea," how Hastings used a PowerPoint presentation outlining his accomplishments and shortcomings to push him out of the CEO role.

Hastings made a "meticulous argument" for why Randolph was not fit to run the company alone, according to the book. Hastings then asked Randolph to step back into the president position, while Hastings took on the chief executive role. Randolph agreed, but he admitted in the book that the discussion "really hurt."

"A lot of the ways Reed and I treated each other translated into what Netflix became culturally," Randolph said in an August interview with Business Insider. "Both of us kind of shared this egoless decision-making where we could argue, we could fight, we could debate, but as soon as it became self-evident that something was right, it immediately didn't matter whose idea it was. We stood behind it."

Hard work doesn't matter

presentation of netflix

Netflix's document also tells current and prospective employees that it doesn't care how hard they work, or how many hours they are in the office.

The results are all that matter.

The most up-to-date culture memo acknowledges that great work usually takes considerable effort, but that effort is not how people are judged at Netflix.

"As workplace cultural evolved over the years, if you were there early or late the perception was you must be working hard," Sutton, at Robert Half Technology, said. "What companies have recognized it that some employees might be more efficient that others."

It's "healthy" for employees to interview with competitors

presentation of netflix

Netflix doesn't give annual performance-based raises or bonuses. Instead, it pays all of its employees at the top of the market for their particular jobs, and gives raises to keep up with the market.

In practice, that means people that have skills that are more in demand usually see their pay rise more quickly than others.

Managers are responsible for aligning pay to the top of market each year. But employees are also encouraged to go out there and see what they're worth themselves.

"It's a healthy idea, not a traitorous one, to understand what other firms would pay you, by interviewing and talking to peers at other companies," Netflix says.

It's a bold stance, but also a practical one. "It's a lot of work to really keep up with what the market is," Sutton, at Robert Half Technology said. "The only way to know is to sell."

It also makes Netflix more attractive when vying for talent in hyper competitive fields of tech. Those people will always know they're being paid as well as they would anywhere else, and they'll have no fear about testing the waters to prove it.

"The importance placed on salary and tying salary to the value someone brings to the company is a major differentiator that really sets Netflix apart in the crowded employer ecosystem," Chavez, at Randstad, said.

No "brilliant jerks"

presentation of netflix

There's a limit to the "high performance" culture at Netflix

The company won't tolerate what it calls "brilliant jerks," or people who are talented but don't play well with others. The culture deck says the cost to teamwork is just too high.

While the "brilliant jerk" may be a high performer, their attitude may make them impossible to work with, or make other people on the team dread coming to work.

This philosophy punctured workplaces in different forms before Netflix published its culture deck.

In 2004, Stanford professor Robert Sutton said in Harvard Business Review that toxic employees, no matter how talented, were not worth the fear and stress they provoked in other employees. The short essay, entitled "More Trouble Than They're Worth," argued that managers should institute a "no a------ policy" for hiring and promoting.

But it was still rare for a big company to publicize that policy as part of its culture. It's something more companies are starting to talk about today, especially in competitive fields, like tech, where people with highly sought after skills have the luxury of turning down companies with toxic cultures.

"Cultural hiring has really become increasingly important for candidates and clients in hyper-competitive environments," Sutton, at Robert Half Technology, said. "Every firm's department leader should think about, 'what is our culture?' and 'what are we looking for in perspective employees as it relates to a culture match?'"

How Netflix Reinvented HR

  • Patty McCord

presentation of netflix

When Netflix executives wrote a PowerPoint deck about the organization’s talent management strategies, the document went viral—it’s been viewed more than 5 million times on the web. Now one of those executives, the company’s longtime chief talent officer, goes beyond the bullet points to paint a detailed picture of how Netflix attracts, retains, and manages stellar employees. The firm draws on five key tenets:

Hire, reward, and tolerate only fully formed adults. Ask workers to rely on logic and common sense instead of formal policies, whether the issue is communication, time off, or expenses.

Tell the truth about performance. Scrap formal reviews in favor of informal conversations. Offer generous severance rather than holding on to workers whose skills no longer fit your needs.

Managers must build great teams. This is their most important task. Don’t rate them on whether they are good mentors or fill out paperwork on time.

Leaders own the job of creating the company culture. You’ve got to actually model and encourage the behavior you talk up.

Talent managers should think like businesspeople and innovators first, and like HR people last. Forget throwing parties and handing out T‑shirts; make sure every employee understands what the company needs most and exactly what’s meant by “high performance.”

Trust people, not policies. Reward candor. And throw away the standard playbook.

Sheryl Sandberg has called it one of the most important documents ever to come out of Silicon Valley. It’s been viewed more than 5 million times on the web. But when Reed Hastings and I (along with some colleagues) wrote a PowerPoint deck explaining how we shaped the culture and motivated performance at Netflix, where Hastings is CEO and I was chief talent officer from 1998 to 2012, we had no idea it would go viral. We realized that some of the talent management ideas we’d pioneered, such as the concept that workers should be allowed to take whatever vacation time they feel is appropriate, had been seen as a little crazy (at least until other companies started adopting them). But we were surprised that an unadorned set of 127 slides—no music, no animation—would become so influential.

  • PM Patty McCord was the chief talent officer at Netflix from 1998 to 2012 and now advises start-ups and entrepreneurs. She is the author of Powerful: Building a Culture of Freedom and Responsibility (Silicon Guild, 2018).

Cool Netflix PowerPoint Template for Download (+7 Practical Tips on Themed Presentation Design)

Ever wished your presentations could capture the same excitement as your favorite Netflix series? Well, we got the perfect Netflix PowerPoint template (that’s completely editable!) for you to use on your next presentation!

Table of Contents

Let’s first unpack a couple of things, so be sure to read until the end so you can get the download link!

7 Pro Tips When Designing a Netflix PowerPoint Template (Or Any Other Themed Presentations)

1. find the right transitions and animations.

  • As much as Morph is a crowd-favorite, you are free to dive beyond the ordinary and explore a variety of animations that seamlessly enhance your themed presentation.
  • Using Netflix PowerPoint template as an example, you can experiment with slide transitions that mimic the smooth flow of a Netflix binge, ensuring your audience stays engaged from start to finish.

2. Use HD, free-for-commercial-use images

Unsplash

  • Source high-quality images from trusted platforms like Unsplash or Freepik , ensuring they are licensed for commercial use.
  • This helps with navigating the legal aspects of incorporating images into commercial presentations, particularly when replicating the aesthetic of a brand such as Netflix, to mitigate potential copyright issues.

3. Mirror the Netflix (or any other themed) experience as close as possible

  • Familiarize yourself with the intricacies of the Netflix app’s interface or themes you are trying to replicate.
  • We recommend designing side by side with the actual Netflix app or take inspiration from references to replicate the look and feel of the theme, paying attention to typography, color schemes, and other distinctive elements.

4. Take your own spin on it by customization

  • Balance aesthetic with personalization. Remember, the goal is to copy the aesthetic, not the entire Netflix interface.
  • Likewise, take inspiration from various sources when designing themed presentations, but don’t copy everything.
  • Tailor the text and graphic elements to align with your presentation’s goals, maintaining professionalism while not losing individuality.

5. Save and embed fonts for seamless viewing

Embed fonts in PowerPoint

  • Save your fonts within the PowerPoint file to maintain design consistency across devices.
  • Embedding fonts safeguards your template’s originality, preventing unintended alterations when viewed on different platforms.

6. Be consistent with branding and align well with your message

  • Extend your theme beyond visuals by aligning the template with your brand’s messaging.
  • Ensure that the chosen theme, inspired by Netflix or any other source, complements the overall tone and objectives of your presentation.

7. Make it interactive!

  • Incorporate interactive PowerPoint elements that mimic the engaging nature of Netflix.
  • Consider clickable links, embedded videos, or interactive graphics to enhance audience participation and understanding.

5 Surprisingly Common Mistakes to Avoid in Designing Themed Presentations

  • Overloading the slides with information
  • Strive for clarity over complexity. Overloading your slides with excessive information can overwhelm your audience and dilute the impact of your message. Prioritize key points, allowing for a more focused and effective presentation.
  • Using more than 3 font styles
  • Embrace simplicity in typography by restricting yourself to no more than three font styles. This design principle fosters a clean and professional appearance, promoting visual harmony throughout your presentation.
  • Not considering text-background contrast
  • Striking the right balance between text and background contrast is essential for readability. Avoid overly flashy color combinations that may hinder legibility. Opt for visually appealing yet readable color palettes that align with your overall theme.
  • Accidental disproportionate images
  • Maintain the integrity of your visuals by avoiding image distortion. Stretching or altering image proportions can compromise the professionalism of your presentation. Keep images true to their original form for a polished and cohesive look.
  • Ignoring alternative text
  • Consider the accessibility of your presentation by providing alternative text for images. Design with inclusivity in mind, ensuring that your content is accessible to a diverse audience, including those with visual or auditory impairments.

PowerPoint Makeovers: The 'Netflix: Culture' Deck

PowerPoint Makeovers: The 'Netflix: Culture' Deck

Company culture is so hot right now. And for good reason— new research shows that companies that succeed in creating a healthy work culture are more successful than those that don't. But what makes a good work culture? Employees have cited work-life balance, a welcoming environment, team camaraderie, top-down connectivity and feeling valued as the most important things to them (more important than compensation, even).

But when did the conversation around “company culture” begin? It’s a bit hard to pin down, but many (including Sheryl Sandberg ) look to a little company called Netflix as the spark that started the fire in 2009 with the release of their culture deck. The now-famous 125-slide presentation was created by Patty McCord, Netflix’s Chief Talent Officer at that time, in collaboration with Reed Hastings, Co-Founder and CEO.

Download the Netflix Culture Deck

This presentation was created using Beautiful.ai

The original presentation, simply titled “ Netflix Culture: Freedom and Responsibility, ” spelled out for potential and current employees what it means to be a part of the culture at Netflix. If you made it all the way to the end, you know that the 5 main subtopics (aka key takeaways) are as follows:

  • Hire, reward and tolerate only fully formed adults
  • Tell the truth about performance
  • Managers own the job of creating great teams
  • Leaders own the job of creating the company culture
  • Good talent managers think like businesspeople and innovators first; HR people last

Even now, the concepts in the Netflix presentation are pretty progressive. The idea of “no tolerance” for immature behavior; the transparency around job performance; the accountability of managers; and so on. But as great as the content in the Netflix presentation is, we can all agree that the design of the presentation leaves a lot to be desired.

Which is why we’ve taken it upon ourselves to beautify it for you—and offer it as a free customizable template so you can craft your own Company Culture presentation in minutes. And because 125 slides is way more than we'd suggest , our version is condensed and only includes the most important topics and subtopics.

As we all know, a strong presentation starts with a strong Title slide. It's the first impression; the outfit your presentation wears; the "tone setter" for the entire talk...aka a very important part of the equation. Let's see how Netflix did.

Netflix Culture Presentation Title Slide: Before

Netflix Culture Presentation Title Slide: After

Netflix Culture Presentation Cover Page

Perhaps you prefer the generic font, microscopic logo and random ying-yang symbol of the original Netflix version—you've got every right to, after all. But we'd like to think that the new Beautiful.ai version communicates something more sophisticated, more mature, more professional. A little more "let's raise the brand bar," if you will.

We do this by having a more prominent logo displayed, using a bold but modern color palette (we used the exact hex codes for Netflix's primary and secondary reds and grays), a clean, sans serif font, balanced, congruent layout of elements on the slide, and a professional presentation byline at the bottom. All these little things come together to say "this is a professional document." And what's more important to company culture than a strong brand?

Let's look at another slide in the "Company Values" section of the Netflix: Culture preso:

Netflix Culture Presentation 'Growth Problem' Slide: Before

Screen Shot 2019-05-28 at 11.41.24 AM

Netflix Culture Presentation 'Growth Problem' Slide: After

Netflix Culture Deck

Since the original Netflix version of this slide was text-heavy, with uninspiring graphics (did our stress levels just spike with this slide?), unclear title and outdated font, we felt it too screamed for a makeover. Still, the concept of the slide is brilliant and one most companies can deeply relate to— #growingpains.

So we moved things around a bit; renamed the slide; added imagery for visual contrast; and used a clean font and clearer graph tags to communicate the point: Growth is tricky.

Netflix Culture Presentation 'Growth Solution' Slide: Before

Screen Shot 2019-05-28 at 3.29.36 PM

Netflix Culture Presentation 'Growth Solution' Slide: After

Netflix Culture Deck

The original Netflix presentation then used the next 12 slides (yes, 12!) to communicate their solution to the problems that arise from rapid company growth, with each slide featuring line after line of text. Not one image or attractive graph or anything, just text. Aka the cardinal SIN of great presentations. (You'll also notice lots of random lines going up and to the right in the original version, but let's ignore those for now before we have an aneurysm).

We'll give Netflix a pass this time—it was 2009 after all—but we think we've said it all (12 slides worth of words) much better with one simple summary slide and some happy smiling faces of staff members below. Check it out:

Netflix Culture Presentation 'Inspiration Quote' Slide: Before

Screen Shot 2019-05-31 at 4.16.43 PM

Netflix Culture Presentation 'Inspiration Quote' Slide: After

Netflix Culture Deck

What's more inspiring: a bunch of san serif text on a white background, or a gorgeous ocean scene that illustrates the sentiment of the inspirational quote and gets you excited about contributing to the team? Yeah, we thought so. This one's pretty obvious, so let's move on.

Netflix Culture Presentation 'Teamwork' Slide: Before

Netflix Culture Presentation Deck

Netflix Culture Presentation 'Teamwork' Slide: After

Netflix Culture Deck

So we have to give Netflix a little credit here. They actually used some color on this slide. Nice! But they could have taken things one step further and chosen supporting imagery to paint a vivid picture of the differences between these three models of corporate teamwork. Our version of slide 90 (yes, it's a long document) offers what none of Netflix's 125 slides do not: context. And because 65% of the population are visual learners , you gotta give 'em visuals if you want them to retain the information you're presenting.

presentation of netflix

Thus concludes our first "PowerPoint Makeover," and we must admit we're proud of our work here . The best part of all this makeover business? It took us minutes to do. And no professional graphic designer— just Beautiful.ai . For the rest of the presentation, we implemented our tried-and-true "best practices of presentations," including but not limited to:

  • Less text on each slide
  • Inspirational imagery
  • Simple, interesting graphs
  • Clean font and typography
  • Clear organization (agenda)
  • Minimal pops of color
  • One idea per slide
  • List main takeaway as headline

And voila! The Netflix: Culture presentation just went from Blah to Beautiful, in minutes. Check out the finished product below, and download a customizable version to use as inspiration for your own company culture presentation or start from scratch .

Netflix is lowering ad prices to below $30, the streaming platform initially came to the market with $65 cpms in 2022.

Netflix is further lowering the prices of its ads, according to three ad buyers who talked to the streamer in July.

Netflix will charge advertisers CPMs (cost per thousand viewers) between $20 and $30 for some of its ad inventory, the buyers said. Netflix will charge $20 for a 15-second ad slot and $25 for a 30-second ad slot, one buyer said, while another buyer said Netflix was charging in the high-$20 range.

Rates for Netflix inventory have been precipitously dropping in the almost two years since the streaming powerhouse said it would start selling advertising time. The Wall Street Journal reported in June that Netflix was talking with buyers about charging $29 to $35 CPMs for ads, a drop from a reported $39 to $45 in 2023. Netflix initially came to the market with an eye-popping $65 CPM in 2022.

Netflix’s new talks with buyers coincide with the streamer’s push into programmatic . Ad buyers pay different rates depending on the types of ads they buy (such as variations in length, targeting criteria and method of transaction) and the existing relationships they have with Netflix. The buyers’ conversations with Netflix on ad pricing were not necessarily about ads sold programmatically.

This summer, the streamer is beginning its partnership with adtech firms The Trade Desk, Google’s Display & Video 360 and Magnite and testing its ad server, which the company said in May it would build itself.

The Trade Desk is offering one-to-one private marketplace (PMP) deals on Netflix inventory this month, followed by programmatic guaranteed inventory in November, the first buyer said, after speaking to The Trade Desk in addition to Netflix about the timeline of the ads.

While Netflix’s conversations with buyers about pricing in July were not inherently tied to its programmatic offering, The Trade Desk is also selling Netflix inventory at lower than precedented rates.

The standard rate for a 30-second ad slot in a Netflix PMP sold via The Trade Desk would be $25, the first source said. The source spoke to Netflix and The Trade Desk separately, noting that Netflix is also charging $25 for a 30-second ad slot (the same as The Trade Desk when it sells this Netflix inventory).

A Netflix spokesperson said that programmatic inventory—which can be sold by Netflix directly or by third parties—will be priced lower than inventory purchased via direct insertion order, a manual way of buying ads. Programmatic pricing starts at a minimum price, or a floor, and what advertisers ultimately pay is usually higher via the auction process and once targeting criteria are layered on.

For the Netflix PMP offered this month via The Trade Desk, a 10-second ad’s floor is $15, a 15-second ad’s floor is $20, a 45-second ad has a floor of $37.50 and a 60-second ad has a $50 floor, the first source said. There are also additional charges for targeting by age, gender or genre, or to reach the top 10 most popular programs on Netflix—attributes Trade Desk buyers can use this month, the first source said.

Netflix declined to comment on the record but did not dispute or confirm the accuracy of the pricing changes. The Trade Desk declined to comment.

Making Netflix more competitive

Netflix has long charged among the highest prices of its rivals, but buyers told ADWEEK that the new lower prices make Netflix more competitive.

Amazon’s Prime Video shook up the streaming market when it launched its ad tier earlier this year, with initial CPMs for some inventory of $26 .

Prime Video also automatically opted in viewers to advertising and offered an option for them to pay more to turn off ads. Netflix’s ad tier is opt-in. As a result, Amazon boasted an average monthly ad-supported reach of 200 million customers globally during its May upfront presentation. Meanwhile, after two years, Netflix’s global monthly active user total for its ad tier was 40 million.

One buyer said the streamer attributed lower prices to having more viewers in its ad tier. In its second-quarter earnings call last month, the company said it had sequentially grown its ads member base by 34%.

Netflix only makes up about 2.7% of U.S. connected TV ad spending, according to eMarketer, well behind Hulu, YouTube and Amazon. Despite this, Netflix still has the largest streaming audience in the U.S. behind YouTube, according to eMarketer, with 179.4 million viewers (many of them pay to watch Netflix without ads).

This article has been updated to clarify that Netflix did not dispute or confirm the pricing changes .

Netflix culture -- always trying to improve.

CompanyNews

Reed Hastings

Founder and CEO

Eight years ago, we first published a slide presentation that outlines our employee culture at Netflix, which has since been viewed millions of times. We’ve made small updates in the interim, but today we are publishing a major update . We’ve evolved the format from 120 slides to 10 pages of prose, seeking to clarify the many points on which people have had questions.

We want to thank all of our Netflix employees for improving our culture, and particularly thank the one thousand employees from around the world who made specific suggestions to the update. Corn dogs, funnel cakes and fried Oreos may come to mind when you think of state fair food, but fairgrounds are also the place where bakers test out their creations by entering competitions.

The sense of community and creativity found at state and county fairs is especially meaningful to Sandra Lee, a cookbook author and TV personality known for the Food Network shows “Semi-Homemade Cooking" and “Sandra's Money Saving Meals." Lee won a blue ribbon at the Los Angeles County Fair in 1992 for display and design. (Her TV shows also featured segments with tablescape and arts and craft ideas inspired by each meal, so it tracks.) Next, she's taking state fairs to a global streaming audience with “Blue Ribbon Baking Championship," out Friday on Netflix.

On the show, 10 talented pastry chefs compete in bake offs for a blue ribbon prize and a shot at $100,000. Lee co-hosts with “American Pie” actor Jason Biggs, who she says is a talented baker: “He’s got a banana bread recipe that is unbelievable." She's also a judge alongside former White House pastry chef, Bill Yosses, and award-winning baker, Bryan Ford.

The venture is a part of Lee's new chapter both professionally and personally. She battled breast cancer in 2015 and ended a 14-year relationship with former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2019 . Lee's beloved uncle Bill was battling cancer himself at that time and she moved from New York to California during COVID-19 to help him.

“I really cleaned house of my life over the last decade, which was extremely painful and very hard to do," said Lee over Zoom from her Malibu home. “I’m finding peace now with my decisions and with my new life. Part of my new life is coming back to television, hopefully wiser, and back to business hopefully even better than ever.”

In a Q&A, Lee tells The Associated Press about starting over, her new show and Christmas trees. Answers are shortened for length and clarity.

AP: You seem to be at a really great place where you have ideas and you're ready for what's ahead.

LEE: I took enough time off to really replenish myself and to really think about what I wanted to do. When I was coming out of being sick in 2015, it really made me focus on what I want to accomplish. And, for me, work has always been extremely important. There's things on my career bucket list to get done. One of them is “Blue Ribbon Baking Championship.”

AP: What are the others?

LEE: I have an idea for a show that will change daytime television. That's my heartstring and it's a big deal. The other one is with a character that I launched on “Today” with Jenna Bush. Her name is Aunt Sandy Clause, which is what my niece and nephews call me. During COVID, I wrote a ton of content, so I have a lot of TV show (ideas.) I would love to do a reality show based on real estate and home staging. My sister has a huge real estate and staging business in Seattle. I want to go up there and do a family reality show.

AP: Besides its premise, what makes “Blue Ribbon Baking Championship” different than other cooking competition shows?

LEE: The comradery and sense of family among the contestants. They lifted each other up. Many of the bakers would actually leave their station and go help the other one. I don’t think the world sees who we really are as Americans. They hear the politics and they hear the kerfuffle in the news. I think that it’s going to be kind of amazing for viewers from other countries to get to watch us and to get to see what our fairs look like and our lifestyle and how kind people are. And — unlike other competitive shows — we shoot in real time. There was no stop and pick up the next day. We were shooting an 18-hour day. There was no cool off time or swap outs.

AP: What's your first love? Cooking? Baking? Entrepreneurship?

LEE: My first love is cake decorating. When kids were playing with dolls, I was playing with powdered sugar and Wilton icing tips. When most kids were looking at Teen Beat, I was getting cake decorating books.

AP: What do you do in your spare time?

LEE: I antique a lot. I’m a huge antique collector. I also go to stores to see how others shop. I can see things differently than most people walking up an aisle. I can stand back and scan a room and I can see where the voids are. I can see what’s needed. I can calculate what's missing and how to fix it.

AP: That must help in business.

LEE: It’s very helpful. There’s always the challenge of people saying no, like with “Semi-Homemade,” everybody said, “No, it won’t work.” I go, “I’m telling you it’s going to work.” Finally, I had to write two books to even get the show. And the show was No. 1 for like five years. I went to them and I said, “We’ve got to do a show called ‘Money Saving Meals.’” They said, “No one wants to save money on food.” So I called my publisher. I go, “I want to do a new book and I want to call it ‘Money Saving Meals.’” And they go, “Great.” We had it on the shelf within a couple months. The Food Network saw it, and called me back. They’re like, “Oh my gosh, we need a show called ‘Money Saving Meals.’”

AP: Let's jump ahead to the holidays. How many Christmas trees do you put up?

LEE: It depends on how many rooms I have in the house. I like to put one in every room. There’s certainly something in every single room of my house.

AP: Do you stick to a theme or is each tree different?

LEE: If you're decorating your rooms differently, and most people do, then I think that trees should represent those rooms. I don't go over the top, unless you think that toilet paper with Santas on it is over the top, which I don't.

Paramount Takes $5.98B Write-Down At Cable Networks Ahead Of Skydance Deal In Latest Big Media Damage From Linear TV

By Jill Goldsmith , Dade Hayes

Paramount Pictures studio in Los Angeles

Paramount Global has taken a massive hit to earnings , booking a nearly $6 billion write-down as part of its second-quarter earnings, a day after Warner Bros. Discovery reported an even bigger charge .

Both impairment charges to bring each to bring their carrying value for linear television assets into line with what they’re likely worth now – much less given years of declines and an uncertain future. WBD’s, of $9.12 billion, was trigged by the recent loss of NBA games.

Paramount Global Steels Itself For New Round Of Layoffs As Q2 Earnings Hit, End Of Skydance “Go-Shop” Period Nears

Watch on deadline.

Overall, the quarter was mixed with total revenue down 11% to $6.8 billion, short of Wall Street forecasts. The numbers beat on other metrics. Paramount+ subscribers decreased 2.8 million in the quarter to 68 million, with the company saying it principally reflects the planned exit from a hard bundle agreement in South Korea. Streaming revenue rose 13% year-over-year.

Subscription revenue grew 12%, advertising revenue rose 16%. Paramount+ revenue grew 46%, driven by year-over-year subscriber growth and ARPU expansion.

Paramount+ global ARPU expanded 26% year-over-year. Operating income increased $450 million from a year ago to $26 million, reflecting the revenue growth and lower costs for marketing and content. TV Media revenue decreased 17% to $4.3 billion, primarily driven by fluctuations in the timing of licensing revenues. Advertising revenue fell 11%, reflecting declines in the linear ad market.

Theatrical revenue was down 40% as  IF  couldn’t match  Transformers: Rise of the Beasts  the year before.  A Quiet Place: Day One  opened just before the quarter ended. Revenues from licensing of film library titles fell.

“Our strong performance in Q2 demonstrates that we are delivering on our strategic priorities. We are proud of our results, including significant earnings growth largely driven by our DTC segment. In fact, for the fourth year in a row, Paramount+ is leading the industry in domestic sign-ups driven by our big broad hit TV series and blockbuster films. DTC profit growth for the past four quarters has totaled nearly $900 million and we are on track to reach domestic profitability for Paramount+ in 2025,” said co-CEOs George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins. “Looking ahead, we will continue to aggressively execute on our Strategic Plan which focuses on transforming streaming to accelerate profitability, streamlining our organization — including at least $500 million in annualized cost savings — and improving the balance sheet by growing free cash flow and optimizing our asset mix. We are confident that our Plan will drive long-term value by leveraging our broad hit content as we continue to transform Paramount for the future.”

Skydance is estimating even greater cost savings when it takes the helm, in the neighborhood of $2 billion, a number insiders at Paramount do not dispute. With layoffs looming , staffers are uneasy but Wall Street is looking to hear that more efficiency is possible. Deadline reported earlier Thursday that hundreds of workers are projected to be let go starting on August 13. In a presentation to shareholders in June, Cheeks, McCarthy and Robbins promised more details about their restructuring plans during the call.
