PhD Study in Brazil – A Guide for 2023

Written by Mark Bennett

Brazil makes for a compelling place to study a PhD. The country is blessed with an amazing biodiversity and a vibrant mix of cultures and traditions, and has the potential to become a genuine economic powerhouse in the coming years.

This page will give you an introduction to PhDs in Brazil, with information on fees and funding, the university system and visas, as well as how to apply.

PhD opportunities in Brazil – what’s on offer for 2024?

Brazil is globally famous for its rainforests, beaches and commitment to joga bonito (the ‘beautiful game’ as practised by such greats as Pele, Ronaldinho and Marta). But it’s also an emerging power beginning to assert itself on the world stage, producing vital research in several areas and committing plenty of financial support to its public university system.

With that in mind, now is as good a time as any for adventurous research students to think about studying a PhD in Brazil. These are a few of the best reasons to consider making the move yourself:

  • Free tuition – Brazil’s prestigious public universities offer free tuition to all, regardless of nationality
  • Language – While it’s possible to study some Brazilian PhDs in English, studying in Brazil is an excellent chance to brush up on your Portuguese, which is the sixth most widely spoken language in the world (by native speakers)
  • Extensive university sector – There are over 2,400 universities in Brazil and the country produces around 13,000 PhD researchers each year
  • Unique research prospects – There’s nowhere else quite like Brazil if you want to conduct research into rainforests and biodiversity

These are the main kinds of higher education institution in Brazil:

  • Federally-managed universities
  • State-managed universities
  • Research centres
  • Technical higher education institutions under municipal authority
  • Private universities

Do rankings matter for PhD study?

University rankings can help you choose a PhD project or programme, provided you know what to look at. Our guide explains how to use rankings as a prospective postgraduate.

PhD structure

In Brazil, a PhD usually lasts for four years and leads to the award of doutorado . In some universities/research centres, the first year may mainly comprise of classes and you might not have to choose a thesis supervisor right away. In others, the structure will consist of four years of research with some taught components throughout.

Brazilian PhD programmes are challenging and rigorous, sometimes involving teaching seminars and other responsibilities.

Brazilian graduate programmes deliver around 13,000 PhD degrees per year and are continuously evaluated using an internationally-recognised methodology, conducted by the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES).

Assessment and examination

The general conditions for the award of a PhD in Brazil involve:

  • Sitting a qualifying examination (the equivalent of the first-year review in the UK)
  • Preparing a thesis
  • Having the required number of credits from taught courses

The thesis examination is very similar to that of the French PhD, the défense , which is a public examination in front of a committee. The committee will examine whether your research counts as an original contribution in a particular field of knowledge – this is the most important criteria for a successful outcome.

Your supervisor will chair the committee, which will have up to five other examiners, all of them PhD holders themselves. As it is a public event, anyone can sit in the audience.

Fees and funding

There are no tuition fees for Brazilian students at public universities (a right established in the Brazilian federal constitution). What’s more, many public universities extend this right to international students too.

Private universities will charge tuition fees in the region of BRL 18,540 to BRL 37,730 (USD $3,305 to USD $6,720).

You may also be charged an application fee at both public and private universities.

Other costs include international student health insurance (see our guide to living in Brazil ) and student services (such as sports facilities). Your student card will give you access to discounted public transport and meals at university restaurants.

Scholarships

There are a number of scholarships available to study in Brazil but a large number are for one-year study abroad (for example as part of a joint PhD or as a visiting PhD researcher). Your university or your department may also have funds for your research. The biggest expense (if you are studying in a public university) will be associated with living costs.

Embassies, consulates and government agencies – particularly those of other Portuguese-speaking countries – sometimes make bilateral agreements to provide bursaries to study in Brazil.

The Brazilian Student Exchange Program for Graduates (PEC-PG) is a programme run by Brazilian agency CAPES to provide financial aid for Masters and PhD courses to increase the qualifications of professors, researchers, professionals and graduates in developing countries. Other scholarships include the Kleinhans Fellowship for Community Forestry Research .

The Fulbright program offers grants to American citizens to study a PhD in Brazil, while the Council on International Educational Exchange has two kinds of grant available for American students to study abroad:

  • Need-based grants (GAIN)
  • Various merit-based scholarships

Applying for a PhD in Brazil

In Brazil, you need a mestrado (or an international equivalent to a Masters) to start a PhD. This is the norm in Brazil and even if it is common practice in your home country to accept students directly from a Bachelors degree, it is unlikely to be sufficient in Brazil.

Please note that degrees considered as lato sensu postgraduate qualifications are not suitable for entry onto a PhD programme degree. MBA programmes in Brazil are classified as lato sensu programmes. You will need a stricto sensu Masters degree (comparable to academic Masters in the UK).

Entry requirements

Applicants to a PhD programme often have to take entrance examinations, but check with your university as there are also other selection processes. Entrance examinations, when they are required, may include written tests (often subject-specific) and an interview during which the panel assesses your motivations.

As for most countries, applications for the majority of postgraduate courses can be made online via individual university websites. Sometimes you will have to contact your chosen department and ask for a form to be sent to you by email.

Deadlines for applications for postgraduate study will vary depending on the university but can be really early, and remember that the academic year starts in February so make sure you check with admissions departments of individual institutions when you application needs to be submitted.

As part of the application, you will have to provide:

  • Application form
  • Official copies of diplomas
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate transcripts
  • A copy of your Masters thesis
  • Reference letters
  • A letter from an academic who has agreed to be your supervisor
  • A copy of the receipt showing that you have paid your application fee (where applicable)

The selection process normally consists of reviewing your qualifications, professional experience and the relevance of the course chosen for your future career. Some universities have a two-stage application process and if you are selected, you may be ask to attend an interview (in person or via video call).

Language requirements

Most examinations and courses are delivered in Portuguese so it is essential that you have adequate levels of Portuguese proficiency. To demonstrate your knowledge of Portuguese, you will have to provide a Celpe-Bras certificate , the only Portuguese language test recognised in Brazil.

For PhD students, there is a small number of departments that are willing to let you apply in English. However, you will require at least some Portuguese before you start your studies (and for everyday life). Universities offer both pre-sessional and in-sessional intensive Portuguese courses.

How do I write a PhD research proposal?

The research proposal is an important part of any PhD application, regardless of where you choose to study. Take a look at our guide for some tips and advice on writing one .

Student visas

As a student, you should apply for a VITEM IV study visa. These kinds of visa are issued for up to one year but can be renewed with the Federal Police in Brazil at the end of the period of validity.

You’ll need to apply for your student visa in person at your local Brazilian embassy or consulate, booking an appointment in advance. The application process can take two to three months so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to arrange everything.

At your visa interview, you’ll need to present the following documents:

  • Your passport
  • A passport-size photo
  • A completed visa application form
  • A police check
  • A copy of your return flight tickets
  • Evidence that you have enough money to support yourself during your studies
  • A letter from your prospective Brazilian university

Once in Brazil you have to register with the Federal Police within 90 days of your arrival. Police registration is necessary to formalise your stay and to get an ID card for foreigners.

Unfortunately, you’re not permitted to undertake any paid work in Brazil while in the country on your student visa.

When you are at the point of requiring a visa renewal, you will have to submit an application to the Federal Police at least 30 days before the expiration date.

If you want to stay on in Brazil after gaining your doctoral degree, there are plenty of opportunities for further research at the country’s universities.

Of course, Brazil also happens to be the largest economy in Latin America and one of the emerging BRICS powers, so you can apply your new-found research skills in many varied business sectors across the nation (and beyond). You’ll need to apply for a VITEM V work visa at the Brazilian Ministry of Justice and Public Security.

5 Best Scholarships in Brazil for International Students

Brazil is widely popular because of the Amazon and its yearly Carnivale festival. In recent years, it has emerged as something else: a top destination for international students.

As of the latest statistics, about 365,000 foreigners are studying in the country. Many of them are drawn to the country’s affordable yet high-quality education.

Annually, international students will only have to pay as low as $2,000 for private school tuition. In public universities, education is free. However, these tuition-free slots for foreigners are limited.

Although studying in Brazil is cheap , foreigners also have the chance to get a degree in the country for free. All one needs to do is apply to any of these Brazil scholarship programs for international students:

Top Scholarships in Brazil for International Students

1. brazil scholarships partnership program for education and training – oas/gcub paec.

  • Scholarship Page
  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition for 2 (Masters) to 4 (Ph.D.) years
  • Eligible Degree/s: Master’s, Ph.D.

Funded by the Organization of American States (OAS), the Brazil Scholarships Partnership Program is open to all citizens of OAS countries, except for Brazil. Likewise, those who hold other scholarships will be excluded from the intake process.

This scholarship in Brazil, which covers the tuition of Portuguese-taught degrees, also comes with a settlement allowance worth $1,200. Recipients are also given free access to language lessons, whether online or in-person.

Students need to submit an accomplished application form, transcript of records, curriculum vitae, letters of recommendation , and essays to apply for this program.

Awardees are chosen according to their merit and admissibility. However, decisions lean towards full-time professors, the order of preference for the programs, and the HDI of the applicant’s country. Likewise, gender equality and geological distribution are considered when selecting scholars.

Once awarded, the student must submit the Scholarship Acceptance form within ten days. Failure to do so would mean rejection of the given officer.

2. FAPESP Direct Doctoral Scholarship in Physics

  • Scholarship Amount: Full amount for four years
  • Eligible Degree/s: Ph.D.

USP is the most prestigious educational institution in all of Brazil. Since 1934, it has contributed to the betterment of the country through research.

In line with its commitment to conducting high-quality research, the university offers a direct doctoral Physics scholarship, one of the best scholarships in Brazil for international students. This is in coordination with the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP).

Only one slot is open for a student who will help with the project entitled “Structural and biophysical properties of native and modified lipoproteins.”

To qualify, the student must know X-ray scattering, diffraction, programming, and structural molecular biology.

Applicants are encouraged to email the requirements. These include academic records, curriculum vitae (publications should be included), a cover letter, and a letter of recommendation .

All shortlisted candidates will be interviewed before the final selection process.

3. Direct Doctoral Scholarship in Computer Systems

This direct doctoral scholarship in Computer Systems is another tandem project of USP and São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) Young Researchers Aid. This Brazil scholarship is open to two students who wish to pursue higher studies in Brazil.

As a direct doctoral program, applicants don’t need to have an MA to qualify. They need to submit the requirements, including a curriculum vitae, the academic record of graduation, and two letters of recommendation.

Likewise, high grades are expected from students who wish to pursue this direct Ph.D. program.

The single awardee will be given an opportunity to study optimization in the context of persistent memories, similar to the one introduced by the Intel Company. Likewise, they are expected to help produce new optimization techniques to address the usual barriers for computer systems.

4. Experimental Medicine Research Cluster Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • Scholarship Amount: Postdoctoral researcher salary

UNICAMP, a public university in Brazil, is funded generously by multiple entities, including the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI). As the name suggests, this foundation was created by the Facebook founder and his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan.

Through this initiative, the university was able to fund one postdoctoral post to study “High-Resolution Profiling of Body Fat Immune Cells in Brazilian Populations.”

The qualifications expected of applicants include a completed doctoral degree in either Systems Biology, Bioinformatics, or Computational Biology. Additionally, the applicant should have exceptional academic records and excellent English skills (both verbal and written.)

Likewise, the applicant should have experience in high-throughput data analysis, including bulk/single RNA sequencing, genetic/protein interaction, and machine learning. The prospective fellow should be knowledgeable in programming Java, Python, or Bash programs as well.

Apart from postdoctoral salary, the fellow will also be included in the CZI and Human atlas cell networks.

Documentary requirements for this opening include a PDF file containing a cover letter, research experience, and two reference letters.

5. Masters in Plant Molecular Biology Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Full amount for two years
  • Eligible Degree/s: Master’s

A joint project by São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and USP, this MA scholarship is open to one student who wishes to specialize in this branch of Botany: Plant Molecular Biology.

International students also need to submit proof of recognition/diploma equivalence to be considered.

Although the application comes with a $60 fee, the international student can pay this amount upon arrival at the university.

The lone awardee will be given a chance to study rice’s response to heat stress.

Apart from undertaking intensive studies for free at USP, the awardee will also be given an opportunity to intern at other facilities. The MA fellow can also work in various research centers, such as the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and the James Hutton Institute in the UK.

4001 Study programs

Imagine pursuing your higher education in Germany, a country renowned for its academic excellence, without having to worry about tuition fees! It's possible! Most public universities in Germany don't charge tuition fees , making it an attractive destination for international students, including those from Brazil.

While tuition might be off the table, living expenses in Germany need careful consideration. The German government estimates that Brazilian students need a minimum of 11,208 Euros per year (or 934 Euros per month) to cover their living costs. This isn't just a suggestion; it's a mandatory requirement for obtaining a German student residence permit . Without proof of this financial capacity, your residence permit application will be rejected. Consequently, you will not be able to study in Germany.

So, how can you bridge the financial gap and secure your dream of studying in Germany? One of the most promising opportunities is a DAAD scholarship. The good news is that Brazilian students are eligible for a variety of DAAD scholarships! This article will serve as your comprehensive guide to the different funding opportunities offered by DAAD for Brazilian students, with a particular focus on DAAD scholarships for Master's and Bachelor's degrees .

It is our goal to inform you honestly and accurately, therefore, we need to add a disclaimer :

This article is for general information only and cannot replace your own research. We, therefore, exclude any liability and highly recommend always double-checking the information on the official DAAD web pages and with the official local DAAD representatives in Brazil .

The DAAD, which stands for Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst ( German Academic Exchange Service ), is a potential game-changer for students worldwide aspiring to study in Germany. As Germany's largest provider of scholarships for international students, DAAD embodies its inspiring motto, " Change through Exchange ."

DAAD operates as a two-way bridge, facilitating educational exchanges in both directions – supporting German students in their pursuit of studies abroad while also welcoming international students, including Brazilians, to Germany. With its main office in Bonn and a branch in Berlin, DAAD's extensive global network spans over 50 countries, including 20 Regional Offices and 37 Information Centers. For Brazilian students, the DAAD Regional Office in Rio de Janeiro serves as a crucial resource.

The organization offers a wide array of scholarship programs, covering undergraduate and graduate studies, PhD programs, language courses, and more. As of 2024, DAAD offers an impressive 86 scholarship programs, each with its own specific DAAD application procedure and requirements.

This comprehensive guide will focus on two key DAAD scholarship types particularly relevant for aspiring students from Brazil:

  • DAAD bachelors scholarship for Brazilians
  • DAAD masters scholarship for Brazilians

These prestigious scholarships are merit-based and designed to fully cover the living expenses of Brazilian students during their studies in Germany. In other words, they provide students, among others, with €934 per month, which amounts to €11,208 annually. Note: this amount is not set in stone - it might change depending on the BAföG rate .

Having a full scholarship that covers all of your living costs in Germany sounds like a great deal, doesn't it? And at this point you might be wondering: " Is Brazil eligible for the DAAD scholarship? " And here is the good news: Yes, as a Brazilian, you are also eligible for a DAAD scholarship !

However, not all DAAD scholarship programs are open for Brazilian applicants. As of 2024, there are 19 DAAD scholarships available for Brazilian students, out of which 7 scholarships are for those Brazilians, who would like to pursue a degree (excluding a PhD) in Germany. It is noteworthy, that all of those DAAD scholarships are for the Master's (graduate) level . Below, you can find the list of these 7 scholarships with key information in a nutshell. However, before moving on to that part, let us tell you what the options are if you are an undergraduate student from Brazil.

Geeky Stuff Box

The 2023 DAAD Annual Report indicates that Brazil is one of the top 15 countries globally, out of over 180, in terms of the number of students awarded DAAD scholarships. This highlights the strong educational ties between Germany and Brazil and the high regard Brazilian students have for DAAD programs.

In 2023, an impressive total of 1030 Brazilians were granted DAAD funding across various scholarship categories. In Latin America, only Colombians won more DAAD scholarships. This substantial figure demonstrates the vast opportunities available to Brazilians through DAAD programs, cementing Germany's status as a highly attractive destination for those seeking international education experiences.

DAAD Scholarship for Bachelors in Germany for Brazil

phd scholarship amount in brazil

As previously mentioned, there is currently no DAAD scholarship specifically for Brazilian students wishing to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Germany . However, if you're an undergraduate student from Brazil, there's an alternative non-degree opportunity: a winter course funded by DAAD. Here are the details about this program:

*Regularly check the application deadlines, as they are updated annually.

This table shows that although there isn't a dedicated DAAD scholarship for Brazilian Bachelor's degree seekers, Brazilian undergraduates can still access DAAD funding for a winter course. Actually, participating in this program can enhance your prospects when applying for a DAAD Master's scholarship, as detailed in the next section.

It's also important to note that while current opportunities are limited, this situation may change, and new options might arise. We suggest keeping an eye on the DAAD scholarship database for the latest updates and new openings.

DAAD Scholarship Brazil: Requirements

phd scholarship amount in brazil

As previously mentioned, DAAD scholarships vary widely in terms of purpose, target audience, admission criteria, application procedures, and more. This also applies to DAAD study scholarships for Brazilians, each having unique requirements and processes. Nevertheless, based on our research, we can outline the key requirements and eligibility criteria that Brazilian students are likely to encounter when applying for DAAD study scholarships .

List of DAAD requirements for Brazil:

  • Education gap : Your previous academic degree should not be older than six years at the application deadline. Note: DAAD typically does not impose any age limits .
  • State of residence : You are ineligible if you have resided in Germany for more than 15 months by the application deadline.
  • Language skills : Your proficiency in English and/or German should meet the requirements of your chosen study program in Germany.
  • Academic performance : While not always explicitly stated, your GPA should be at least "GOOD," equivalent to a 2.5 in the German grading system.

IMPORTANT : To be eligible for a DAAD scholarship and study in Germany, you must also fulfill all the specific admission requirements of the study program you wish to enroll in. Therefore, in addition to checking the DAAD website, make sure you are fully informed about the details of the courses you plan to apply for.

Even if not always explicitly required, a strong extracurricular portfolio (e.g., internships, volunteer work, project participation, training, etc.) can significantly enhance your chances of securing a DAAD scholarship.

Application Documents

phd scholarship amount in brazil

Now that you're familiar with the DAAD eligibility criteria, let's address a crucial question: What documents do Brazilian students need for their DAAD scholarship application? The answer varies due to the diversity of funding programs, but there are some common documents required across most DAAD scholarship applications.

DAAD checklist for Brazil:

  • Online application form . DAAD has its own application form, which needs to be completely filled out by the applicant. Do not worry: it is quite self-explanatory and easy to follow.
  • Educational certificate(s) . For instance, your Bachelor's degree and high school diploma.
  • Transcript of records . If your transcript includes only the individual grades of the courses you took without explaining the grading system at your institution, you should also separately attach the document containing that information to your DAAD application.
  • Language certificate(s) . Usually, the proof of your English (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL) and/or German (e.g., TestDaf, DSH) level should not be more than 2 years old.
  • Curriculum Vitae . Full tabular CV/Resume without any unexplained gaps.
  • Letter of Motivation . Basically, around 1-3-pager, convincingly explaining why you deserve the funding.
  • Letter of Recommendation . Also called a reference letter (from a professor or from an employer).

Important considerations:

  • If your documents are not originally in English or in German, you need their (certified) translations.
  • If your DAAD scholarship application is incomplete , the documents are not in the right shape, or even one signature is missing, it can be rejected. That is why we recommend you take your time and closely inspect the requirements of your chosen scholarship program to ensure that you are well and correctly informed and do not miss anything (hence, your application is not rejected for formal reasons).
  • Usually, you do not need to wait for the letter of admission from the German study program to apply for the DAAD scholarship. The reason is that the DAAD scholarships are pre-admission scholarships. To put it differently, as a rule, you first apply for the DAAD scholarship and then for the desired Bachelor's or Master's study program in Germany.

How to apply for a DAAD scholarship from Brazil?

phd scholarship amount in brazil

You might have guessed that there isn't a single set of steps for Brazilian students that applies to every DAAD scholarship. However, there are SEVEN key steps Brazilian students need to know to apply for and win a DAAD scholarship.

DAAD Application Process for Brazilians:

  • Find the scholarship : Start by visiting the DAAD scholarship database and use the website's filters to narrow down your scholarship options.
  • Check eligibility : Once you've found a scholarship that aligns with your interests and goals, ensure you meet the basic formal requirements listed under " Application Requirements " on the DAAD database.
  • Collect the documents : Refer to the " Application Procedure " section on the DAAD database for a list of required documents. Important: Certify and translate the documents as needed.
  • Submit the application : Most applications are submitted online via the DAAD portal . However, some scholarships may have diverse submission procedures, such as requiring direct application to the academic program (e.g., Helmut-Schmidt Scholarship ).
  • Wait for the response from DAAD : This can take several months. If your first-stage application is successful, DAAD will contact you and invite you to the second stage of the application process.
  • Complete the second stage : The second stage varies depending on the scholarship. For instance, it may involve an interview or the submission of additional documents.
  • Wait for the final results : After completing the second stage, it may take a few months for DAAD to finalize the list of selected scholarship recipients. They will then inform you whether you have been awarded the scholarship.

DAAD Selection Criteria for Brazilians

phd scholarship amount in brazil

Understanding the selection criteria and process is essential for optimizing your application and setting realistic goals. Below are the main DAAD selection criteria for Brazilian students:

  • Grade Point Average (GPA) : very good grades will significantly improve your chances of winning the scholarship.
  • Motivation : so, take the letter of motivation seriously!
  • Extracurricular Commitment : practical experiences, participation in workshops & trainings, publications, etc. So, make sure your CV is crafted in a way that all of these details are efficiently depicted.

While every component of your application holds importance, excelling in these areas can greatly enhance your likelihood of success.

DAAD Scholarship Brazil: Deadline & When to Apply

phd scholarship amount in brazil

Brazilian students should apply for the DAAD funding as soon as possible!

For Brazilian students eyeing DAAD scholarships, it's important to note that deadlines vary depending on the specific scholarship program. Hence, it's crucial to regularly check the relevant program pages for the most up-to-date information. PRO TIP: In most cases, DAAD deadlines for Brazilians fall during the autumn months. To avoid any last-minute rush, we advise starting your DAAD application process at least 2 months before the scholarship deadline . This will give you sufficient time to gather and prepare all necessary documents. The application procedure for the DAAD scholarship can be extensive for Brazilian students, with the total DAAD processing time being around 6 months . Additionally, you'll need at least 1 month to prepare your application, making the total time investment approximately 7 months. Therefore, it’s crucial to plan ahead to ensure you start your studies in Germany with a DAAD scholarship on time.

To illustrate the planning timeline, consider this example : If you aim to begin your Master’s studies in Germany with a DAAD scholarship in October 2026, you should start your DAAD application process around August 2025. Thus, preparation for a DAAD scholarship starts over a year before your intended studies in Germany .

Is it hard to win a DAAD scholarship?

phd scholarship amount in brazil

It is not easy to secure a DAAD scholarship , no matter where you’re from. This is largely due to its status as one of the most competitive and prestigious scholarships available in Germany. According to our 2023 research, the acceptance rate for DAAD scholarships among Brazilian students is around 10% . This translates to roughly 10 out of every 100 Brazilian applicants being successful in their DAAD applications. Consequently, the rejection rate for Brazilians applying for DAAD funding is about 90%. The primary reasons for rejection include a low GPA and a generally weak academic profile.

In essence, even if you meet all the basic requirements and have correctly completed the application process, there is still a high likelihood of rejection if your GPA is not strong, your CV lacks substantial content, or your Motivation Letter is not persuasive. Thus, getting a DAAD scholarship is quite a competitive process for Brazilian students .
