As you apply for membership in this national organization, remember NHS membership is based on meeting criteria in four areas that the NHS calls its four pillars: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character .

Scholarship

The first pillar, scholarship , requires that a student earns a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent. Many high schools set a higher GPA bar for their school’s chapter. If you meet your school’s academic requirement, congratulations, you’ve passed the first hurdle.

Now it’s important that you carefully complete the application and write a compelling essay. Most high schools require students to write a 300-500 word essay that showcases their commitment and accomplishments in the other three pillars.

Service refers to the contributions you make to your school and or community on a volunteer basis, without receiving any compensation. For your most significant service activities, be sure to explain why you choose to support certain organizations and why you chose specific roles.

Showcase your leadership in your school and or community while working with or for others. Remember, stating that you are the captain of a team, president of a club, or supervisor of a shift does not prove that you are a leader. A leader makes things happen, sets a good example, and inspires others to give their personal best. Clearly state why you were selected to hold a leadership position and how you effectively lead. There are many successful leadership styles. Communicate your unique brand of leadership.

Character is how you conduct yourself with high standards of honesty, reliability, and respect for others. Many attributes define good character, and they all reflect a personal commitment to ethical and compassionate interactions with others as well as how you treat yourself. Results are only part of the story. How you achieved them is critically important to communicate.

Think about how many NHS applications your school counselor reviews each year. Not every student who completes an application is selected for the honor. So how do you make your essay stand out? Here are five strategies:

1. Make it Personal and Individual

Your application form provides the facts about the scope and range of your involvement and contributions to your communities. Be sure that you write your essay in a way that brings this data to life. A compelling essay enables the reader to feel a strong connection to you. Express your unique values, aspirations, and priorities. State the motivation behind your choices and the trade-offs you’ve made. Be honest about challenges and what you have learned through your mistakes. And be sure the tone of the essay sounds like you and nobody else.

2. Share Your Stories

People love to hear and remember stories, not simply facts and figures. Express themes and points that you want to share by relaying stories that bring these concepts to life. Stories can be poignant, funny, suspenseful, or surprising. Any approach that makes a reader want to continue reading is a great one.

3. Be Humble and Bold

Many students find it hard to express their hard-earned accomplishments without sounding boastful. Proudly stating your achievements without sounding brash is possible and important. Clearly state your motivations, your challenges, your vulnerabilities, and your mistakes to mitigate any concerns.

4. Follow Tried and True Essay Guidelines

Channel all the advice you’ve received over the years about how to write a great essay. Do you have a clear thesis around which you have organized your thoughts? Compelling topic sentences to hook your reader? Strong supporting sentences to back up your reasoning? Have you avoided clichés? Do you vary your sentence structure and word choice? Does the text flow and keep the reader engaged? Last, but not least, have you checked and double-checked your grammar, punctuation, and spelling?

5. Draft, Edit, Edit, Edit, Polish

Writing is an iterative process so give yourself the time necessary to land on the best approach for explaining why you are deserving of the NHS honor. There are many ways to tackle an essay. Try a few to determine which is the most effective. Then, when you determine the best approach and are satisfied with your latest draft, share it with someone whose opinion you value.

Success is not only about improving yourself, but also about improving life for others. While my GPA shows my commitment to academics, how I spend my time and conduct myself outside of school reveal my commitment to making the world a better place, consistent with the values of the National Honor Society.

For the two years my grandfather lived in a nursing home, each weekend I took my dog EJ to visit him. I witnessed first-hand the healing power of animals as EJ lifted his and the other residents’ spirits. Because of this experience and because monkeys are my favorite animal, when I heard about Helping Hands (HH), the only organization in the world that raises capuchin monkeys to be live-in assistants to people with spinal cord injuries, I reached out to volunteer.

Both in the summer and during the school year, I assist the trainers. Monkeys begin training when they are teenagers. It typically takes three to five years until they are ready to be placed with a person. My first job is to clean the cages of 60 monkeys. (Not my favorite responsibility.) I also prepare meals and construct and distribute dexterity “toys.”

While not glamorous, my work is critical to the success of the initiative. The physical support the monkeys provide is unbelievable. They turn pages of books, scratch itches, pour water, and retrieve dropped items… Most importantly, I have seen the life-changing impact a monkey’s companionship has on a partner, including a college-age student confined to a wheelchair after a spinal cord injury from hockey.

In the spring, summer, and fall I also volunteer at Gaining Ground (GG), a non-profit that grows organic produce to donate to food pantries, shelters, and meal programs. When I volunteered at a local food pantry, it struck me that recipients receive mostly canned and packaged food. I think it is important that people in need receive fresh fruits and vegetables, and I enjoy the physical work of weeding, harvesting, cleaning, and packing produce.

Soon after I began volunteering at GG, my rabbi gave a sermon about the working conditions of tomato farmers in Florida. (It reminded me of Grapes of Wrath, and I couldn’t believe inhumane practices continue.) Her sermon motivated me to support the Coalition of Immokalee Workers by distributing postcards urging Trader Joe’s and Stop & Shop to only buy tomatoes from farms that agree to fair wages and human rights. Both chains have now agreed, showing that a little effort by many people makes a difference.

Last, I believe a story is the best way to explain my “behind-the-scenes” leadership. At the annual nighttime football game, one of my soccer teammates (not someone I hang with) was drunk. When our principal came over to the bleachers, my teammate’s friends fled. Concerned that my teammate would fall and hurt herself, I brought her outside the stadium, called her parents, and waited with her until they came — without worrying about social retribution. Despite getting grounded, she thanked me for my help.

Some of the more celebrity-famous NHS-ers include journalist Katie Couric, writer, and comedian Tina Fey, and poet Robert Warren Penn. Former first lady Michelle Obama, of course. 1) Structure your NHS essay around the NHS Pillars: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. A high GPA acts as an indicator of your “scholarship”, or dedication to academia. This pillar must appear in your essay as well, in the form of impeccable writing skills. Demonstrate your service and leadership through the content of your essay. In other words, service and leadership form the action, or plot, of your essay. Finally, infuse your character throughout your essay, by showing how your behavior indicates your values and integrity.

2) Write from your heart, and make your NHS essay personal. The most memorable essays rely on a sincere writing voice and contain personal details. But note that by “personal,” I don’t mean you must share your deepest secrets. Rather, ground an event in your own experience by incorporating your emotions, thoughts, and sensations. This will make your essay unique to you.

3) Weave together a story; don’t make a list. As you tell your story, pull from your strongest experiences. Perhaps you have a handful of leadership and service roles. Pick only a few that say something about your interests and personality, and develop your story by threading these ideas together. While a list might look impressive, a story will come across as better crafted and more captivating. If, however, none of your service activities seem significant enough to single out and describe on their own, weave these activities together through a theme. For example, the theme could be how you overcame shyness to lead.

4) Mind your audience. In this case, your audience is your school’s faculty member who’s taken on the role of chapter adviser. You may want to meet with them ahead of time to let them know you’re applying. This initiative on your part will look impressive. Moreover, you can ask in person what they look for in an NHS essay. Certainly, they’ll want to know how you stand out from the other applicants. So, you’ll also want to keep your competition in mind. As with college application essays, the tone of your NHS essay should be polite, formal, and charismatic.

5) Brainstorm, draft, edit, and repeat. A National Honor Society essay isn’t written overnight. Once you have your initial ideas down on paper, return to the page for a round of editing. Ask yourself where you can expand and where you sound redundant. Look for common threads and themes to enhance. Create transition sentences between paragraphs. Revise your conclusion. Next, show your essay to someone you trust. Their feedback will indicate where your essay excels and where you need to improve.

My grandmother, or Ma-Maw , was the kind of generous busybody who made six different pies for her granddaughters’ birthdays. She invited everyone on the block, so nothing went to waste. Once, when we both went to shovel up the last slice of pie, she laughed, and said, “ noblesse oblige .” She often spoke French, a Louisiana French foreign yet familiar to me. I didn’t think to ask what she’d meant. Did she think I was noble? Was that why I got to scarf down the last of the cherry pie?

Ma-Maw died the summer before I entered high school. I missed her terribly, long after my parents sold her house. Receiving her redirected mail felt like a blow. So many newsletters from Friends of the New Orleans Public Library! Since I loved books as much as Ma-Maw, I opened these up. Inside, I read about a partnership program, Start the Adventure in Reading (STAIR). They needed in-person volunteers to tutor second- and third-graders in reading.

Before I knew it, I was cracking open vocabulary books twice a week with a kid named Harper. When I wasn’t tutoring, I was lesson planning, going over Harper’s writing journal, and scouring shelves for more early reader books. This got me thinking about literacy in New Orleans. 39% of high school students my age have the reading level of a 5 th grader—or worse. Harper lived in a part of town that didn’t even have bookstores. Would she keep up her reading once the tutoring was over, despite the odds? I also thought about representation and accessibility. If Harper had more books about people like her, and if those books were all over the place, and easy to take home, would things change?

NHS Essay Example, Continued

Due to this newfound interest in advocating for literacy, I decided to build a Free Little Library (FLL). To do so, I needed help. That spring, I founded a school club, Reading the World, and convinced 8 members to join. Together, we dismantled one of Ma-Maw’s kitchen cabinets and incorporated other used materials to build an upcycled stand that could fit 20 books.

Next, we got in touch with the program Read for Color, which helps make BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other diverse and marginalized voices heard. I believe their initiative parallels our own, which is to provide a diversity of voices through language itself. Our FLL features books in Cajun French and Creole and works in translation. With permission, we installed the FLL outside Ma-Maw’s old home. For its inauguration, our club invited the local organizations Youth Empowerment Project, One Book One New Orleans, and Read in Color. We plan to collaborate with these groups next year.

Now a sophomore, I’ve continued literacy advocacy by volunteering at Alliance Française events. This has given me new ideas about how to run Reading the World. I’ve added monthly book club events. Furthermore, every club member tutors a STAIR student. Finally, we’ll visit local senior homes at Thanksgiving and Christmas and read to the residents.

Ma-Maw would be happy to hear I won the L’Union Française’s Prix d’Excellence this year. She’d be even more thrilled to see how I’ve shared her love of reading with my community. Now I understand noblesse oblige : if you believe you are someone of noble character, then you must act accordingly. This NHS motto was easy for Ma-Maw to follow. She gave everything and led by example. I plan to follow in her footsteps. It would be an immense honor to do so through the National Honor Society.

NHS Essay Example, Dissected

This National Honor Society essay succeeds for many reasons. First, the student structures her essay around the theme of language and literacy. (Perhaps she also captains her softball team and volunteers for the Red Cross. But the student has correctly judged that these elements would distract from her story.) Rather than list her achievements and service, the student builds every element into a journey. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. It shows how the student evolved to be someone who wants to make a difference. The ending completes the story by circling back to the beginning, through the idea of “noblesse oblige.” The student also manages to state clearly her thesis: she deserves acceptance into the National Honor Society.

This student’s story also centers around an emotional current, that of the student’s grandmother. The reader wants to invest in the story more because of this emotional aspect. Literacy is clearly not a random activity, but a meaningful one for the student. Including a role model allows the student to avoid bragging by transferring her praise to her grandmother.

Finally, the tone of the essay is formal (“It would be an immense honor”). Meanwhile, the unique voice of the student comes through (“We both went to shovel up the last slice of pie”). She accurately cites the names of the organizations she’s involved with and uses specificity (such as her grandmother’s kitchen cabinets) to draw the reader in.

This compassionate care was evident throughout my time at the clinic. I additionally saw how crucial it was to have excellent written and verbal communication, as the team were constantly in touch with other services, hospitals and clinics. To develop my skillset and better prepare for nursing, I became a listening volunteer for the Samaritans. Thoughts on application statements

Been applying for Medical Laboratory Assistant, biomedical scientisy trainee, and Biomedical Support Worker roles in NHS Scotland. I have graduated with a 2.2 in Biomedical Science (IBMS accredited). So far have zero luck with jobs or interviews.

I'd appreciate some feedback here on what I could improve on!

My passion for science, coupled with my academic background and practical experience, make me a confident and enthusiastic candidate for this Medical Laboratory Assistant role within the NHS, with a 1-year project being ideal to build upon my skills and help further me in the field of Biomedical Science.

Solid Academic Foundation: I graduated with a 2.2 in Biomedical Science, from the University of Strathclyde, demonstrating my grasp of critical scientific principles and laboratory procedures. The University of Strathclyde is a leading institution ranked 3rd in the UK for Biological Sciences. During my degree, I delved into a broad range of disciplines including biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, haematology, and molecular pathology. Many of the lectures were also undertaken by current NHS laboratory scientists.

Beyond the Degree: Putting Theory into Practice: In my final year project, I gained valuable hands-on laboratory experience, while studying antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas. I independently executed various techniques, including PCR, electrophoresis, cell-based assays, stock solution preparation, bacterial streaking, flow cytometry and the use of pipetting and plate reading machines. I also collaborated with my supervisor and peers, effectively communicating my research progress, sharing data, and seeking feedback. This collaborative approach allowed me to learn from others, refine my ideas, and ultimately achieve a successful project outcome.

Team Player: Having collaborated with peers on my research project and group presentations, as well as, in my third year, taking on a leadership role and assisting in mentoring first-year students during a group project, I understand the importance of clear communication, active listening, and supporting colleagues to achieve shared goals. My adaptability and willingness to help create a positive and collaborative laboratory environment.

Communication: I have developed strong interpersonal and communication skills, working alongside other researchers as well as presenting my research findings to senior researchers, lecturers, and PhD students. I can articulate scientific concepts clearly and concisely. This effective communication will ensure smooth interactions with colleagues, fostering trust and understanding.

Pressure? I thrive on it! Juggling deadlines, undertaking experiments, and many unexpected obstacles during my studies have equipped me with the ability to work efficiently and calmly under pressure. Also, working on a fast-paced production line, I had to work quickly, maintaining strong communication, while also adhering to strict safety protocols.

Planning and Organisation: I have honed my planning and organisational skills, meticulously planning my research project, while simultaneously managing my academic workload. I am adept at setting priorities, managing time effectively, and meeting deadlines consistently. This skill set will ensure smooth workflow and contribute to a highly organised laboratory environment.

Accuracy and Reliability: I understand the critical importance of accuracy in laboratory work, and I am laser-focused on ensuring the integrity of samples, data, and procedures. Throughout my degree, and my research project, I had to pay meticulous attention to detail, while minimising errors and ensuring the reliability of my results. I take pride in what I do and will ensure consistent and reliable work.

Why do I want to work for the NHS?

Being part of the NHS would allow me to directly contribute to the health and well-being of my community, and that deeply motivates me. I also believe that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, and free and high-quality healthcare is what the NHS stands for and I want to be a part of the team that provides it. The NHS strives for Better Care, Better Health, Better Value, and a Better Workplace. I chose to apply for the NHS out of anywhere else because it provides a secure job; a job where you can build upon, move up the ladder and gain valuable experience.

I know a few who have and are working within the NHS, one as a nurse, and although the job is hard and tiring, they have been there for many years, and have had enjoyment throughout them. The NHS is also the backbone of the UK. It provides people, regardless of income or background, with a constant safety net of healthcare throughout their entire lives. It constantly pushes the boundaries of medical knowledge, pioneering groundbreaking treatments, and encouraging the next generation of medical professionals. The NHS is a source of innovation, a testament to the UK's dedication to advancing healthcare for all. Throughout the pandemic, the resilience of the NHS was shown and the pace of ramping up vaccinations and treatments was astounding. It showed the hard work and dedication of the doctors, nurses, and biomedical and laboratory staff. It also portrayed the public's loyalty and trust in the NHS, with the high numbers of vaccinations and weekly claps for nurses.

Commitment to quality of care: Throughout my laboratory experience, I prioritised accuracy. I adhered strictly to safety protocols, double-checked results, and documented procedures and results diligently. This unwavering commitment to accuracy ensured the integrity of samples and data, contributing to reliable results and ultimately, quality of research and patient care.

Working together for patients: During my final year project, I didn't just focus on my individual tasks, I proactively sought feedback from my supervisor and peers, readily shared data, and actively participated in brainstorming sessions. This collaborative approach allowed us to overcome challenges more effectively and ultimately led to a successful project with potentially broader healthcare benefits.

How Do I Start Writing My Personal Statement?

Understanding how to structure your Personal Statement for Medicine will firstly help you to plan your writing. Note down the three key categories of Motivation, Exploration and Suitability – then write bullet points with everything you want to include for each one.

Once you have a plan, you’re ready to start writing your first draft. You can start with the introduction – but if you’re finding this hard, there’s no problem with leaving it until the end.

Personal Statement Dos And Don’ts – With Examples

Do give a good reason why you want to study medicine.

Example: “I aspire to study Medicine because I enjoy science and my experiences of volunteering and observational placements cemented my decision. The opportunity to talk to patients and have an impact on them by giving my time was an incredibly important experience for me.”

You need to start your Personal Statement by explaining why you want to study Medicine. This example shows a multifaceted reason for wanting to study Medicine by linking science and interaction with people. It’s a good idea to give a layered reason for wanting to study Medicine, as it shows that you appreciate the variety of skills that are needed.

Do explain what you learned from work experience and/or volunteering

Example: “Speaking to a patient in Breast Surgery, I was impressed by how the Doctors involved the patient in the decision making process. They always considered her emotional needs as well as her physical illness, highlighting to me the need for Doctors to be empathetic.”

This is a good example of writing about work experience , because it covers an activity that the student carried out as well as what they learned from it. It includes a key learning point around empathy – one of the skills needed to be a good Doctor. It also demonstrates active learning rather than passive shadowing, which is important as you want your Personal Statement to have an active tone to show that you were participating in activities.

Do demonstrate that you have the qualities needed to study Medicine

Example: “Tutoring GCSE students in Maths has helped me to develop my communication skills by explaining complex topics in a simple manner. I know this is useful in Medicine as Doctors need to communicate with patients and also participate in peer teaching.”

Medicine is not just about academic skills, so it’s important to show that you appreciate the importance of other skills such as communication and teamwork. In this example, the student doesn’t just say that they have good communication skills – they explain why, state how they developed these skills and back it all up with evidence.

When you mention extracurricular activities, do talk about the skills you gained from them

Example: “I developed good time management skills while balancing being a school prefect, head of the Junior Medics Society and a mentor for Maths and Chemistry.”

This example shows that the student has one of the key skills needed to study Medicine and be a good Doctor, which in this case is good time management. Instead of just listing the various extracurricular activities they participated in at school, hoping to impress the Admissions Tutors with everything they’ve done, they have stated an important skill for Medicine that they possess and used their extracurricular activities as evidence for it.

Do show that you have explored Medicine further than your A-Level studies

Example: “To further understand the challenges faced by cancer researchers, I completed an online course which introduced me to the principles of chemotherapy. I realised the difficulty was finding ways to target tumours while sparing body cells, reflecting how neoplasms are derived from our own cells and have mechanisms to evade our immune system.”

It’s a good idea to show that you have an interest in Medicine beyond your A-Level science curriculum. In this example, the student has stated an area of Medicine they are particularly interested in and what they did to explore it further. They have also mentioned what they learned from doing their course, which shows that they engaged with the teaching and this is a useful skill for studying Medicine.

Don’t give a generic reason for wanting to study Medicine

Example: “I want to study Medicine because I have always had an aptitude for science and excelled in school. Several of my family members are Doctors, so I gained an understanding of the career at a young age.”

This is not a compelling enough reason for why the student wants to study Medicine. A strong academic background is naturally important for your application, but this isn’t all it takes to be a good Doctor. You need to have a passion for helping and caring for people, and your Personal Statement should demonstrate this with evidence. Also, it isn’t wise to say that you’ve always wanted to be a Doctor because it runs in your family, as this makes your decision feel less independent.

Don’t talk about work experience without reflecting on what you learned

Example: “I carried out work experience on a cardiology ward where I saw Doctors doing stent insertion and coronary bypasses on patients. I also observed the Doctors and nurses doing multidisciplinary meetings to decide how to treat the patients.”

This is a bad example when it comes to writing about work experience because it lacks reflections. The placement may have been a valuable experience, but the student has simply listed what they saw rather than talking about what they learned. If you watched procedures and observed multidisciplinary meetings during your placement, what did it teach you about the role of a Doctor and the skills that are essential on a daily basis?

Don’t talk about qualities you have without providing evidence

Example: “While carrying out work experience in a surgery ward, I saw the importance of teamwork when carrying out an appendectomy. I believe I am a good team player too.”

The student started off well by talking about the qualities of a good Doctor, but they followed it up by simply claiming they are a good team player without offering the Admissions Tutor any evidence for this. As a general rule, don’t put claims in your Personal Statement that are unsubstantiated. If you want to say that you’re a good team player, what proof can you provide?

Don’t just list your extracurricular activities

Example: “Outside of school I enjoy playing hockey, tennis and football. I have been doing competitive dance for the last six years and I won the regional championships last year.”

It’s brilliant that the student has been involved in so many activities outside of school – however, they have forgotten to link these skills to Medicine. To improve this, they need to mention the skills they have learned from doing these activities, such as teamwork and time management. Remember that the purpose of your Personal Statement is to showcase your suitability to study Medicine, so you need to link everything back to this and prove why you are a strong candidate.

Don’t come across as boastful or arrogant

Example: “I have achieved gold medals in the senior level Maths and Chemistry national olympiads. This shows that I have excelled academically, and as such I believe that studying Medicine will come naturally to me.”

It’s good that the student has performed well in academic competitions, but their reflection on it comes across as boastful and implies that they think Medicine is all about academic ability. Medicine is a difficult course, leading to a challenging career – so by claiming that Medicine will come naturally to them, the student is showing that they haven’t really done their research and are perhaps applying with unrealistic expectations of the course/career. After mentioning the olympiads, they could have avoided the next sentence and instead talked about how the olympiads helped them to develop their problem solving skills, which will be useful when they study Medicine.

How Do I Check My Personal Statement For Medicine?

When you’ve spent hours writing your Personal Statement for Medicine, you might struggle to view it objectively, like an Admissions Tutor will. Here are some ways for you to check your Personal Statement thoroughly:

Print it out and read it on paper. This will help you see it through new eyes and you might spot things you missed from proofreading it on your computer.
Read your Personal Statement aloud. You’ll catch more errors this way, and it will highlight parts where you still need to work on your wording.
Ask someone else to check it, like a friend, family member or teacher. They will be able to look at it more objectively, because they haven’t already read it lots of times like you have, so they should be able to pick up more errors.
Get your Personal Statement reviewed by an Admissions Tutor . They’ll spot issues with spelling and grammar, and can also advise ways to improve the content.

Provisional decision to impose £6m fine on software provider following 2022 ransomware attack that disrupted NHS and social care services

We have provisionally decided to fine Advanced Computer Software Group Ltd (Advanced) £6.09m, following an initial finding that the provider failed to implement measures to protect the personal information of 82,946 people, including some sensitive personal information.

Advanced provides IT and software services to organisations on a national scale, including the NHS and other healthcare providers, and handles people’s personal information on behalf of these organisations as their data processor.

The provisional decision to issue a fine relates to a ransomware incident in August 2022, where we have provisionally found that hackers initially accessed a number of Advanced’s health and care systems via a customer account that did not have multi-factor authentication.

We have provisionally found that personal information belonging to 82,946 people was exfiltrated following the attack. The cyber attack was widely reported at the time of the incident, with reports of disruption to critical services such as NHS 111, and other healthcare staff unable to access patient records.

The data exfiltrated included phone numbers and medical records, as well as details of how to gain entry to the homes of 890 people who were receiving care at home. People impacted have been notified, and Advanced found no evidence that any data was published on the dark web.

The Commissioner’s findings are provisional. No conclusion should be drawn at this stage that there has, in fact, been any breach of data protection law or that a financial penalty will ultimately be imposed. The Commissioner will carefully consider any representations Advanced make before making a final decision, with the fine amount also subject to change.

John Edwards, UK Information Commissioner, said:

“This incident shows just how important it is to prioritise information security. Losing control of sensitive personal information will have been distressing for people who had no choice but to put their trust in health and care organisations. “Not only was personal information compromised, but we have also seen reports that this incident caused disruption to some health services, disrupting their ability to deliver patient care. A sector already under pressure was put under further strain due to this incident. "F or an organisation trusted to handle a significant volume of sensitive and special category data, we have provisionally found serious failings in its approach to information security prior to this incident. Despite already installing measures on its corporate systems, our provisional finding is that Advanced failed to keep its healthcare systems secure. We expect all organisations to take fundamental steps to secure their systems, such as regularly checking for vulnerabilities, implementing multi-factor authentication and keeping systems up to date with the latest security patches. “I am choosing to publicise this provisional decision today as it is my duty to ensure other organisations have information that can help them to secure their systems and avoid similar incidents in the future. I urge all organisations, especially those handling sensitive health data, to urgently secure external connections with multi-factor authentication.”

Data processors act on the instructions of their clients, the data controllers, who have overall control over how and why personal information is used. However, data processors, such as Advanced, still have their own obligations to implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure personal information is kept secure. This includes taking steps to assess and mitigate risks, such as regularly checking for vulnerabilities, implementing multi-factor authentication and keeping systems up to date with the latest security patches.

Statement from Amanda Pritchard, NHS Chief Executive

I had intended this message to focus mainly on thanking the many NHS colleagues who were involved in caring for those killed and injured in the horrendous attack in Southport last week – the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) crews who attended the scene, the receiving teams at Southport and Formby, Ormskirk, Alder Hey, Aintree, and Manchester Children’s Hospitals, as well as the many other colleagues in those trusts, Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board and the North West region who helped coordinate the response.

The suffering of the people of Southport, and others touched by the violence there, is unfathomable. And it will inevitably take a toll on those NHS staff involved in the response; I know from my time at Guy’s and St Thomas’ how hard incidents like this can be for those treating victims and supporting families, but I can only imagine how much more affecting it has been for those treating children. We will make sure colleagues get any support they need – as we will for the people of Southport.

Sadly, the riots that followed in Southport, and then other towns and cities over the course of the week, also warrant – indeed they require -comment.

The deplorable violence, intimidation and thuggery we have seen – and particularly the arson attack on the hotel in Rotherham housing asylum seekers – can and should be lent no justification. It is fundamentally wrong, fundamentally un-British, and a source of deep shame.

But it is often in the worst of moments where the best of people can be seen.

The outpouring of solidarity in Southport, first for the families affected by the attack, and then for those whose homes, businesses and places of worship had been damaged by rioters.

The professionalism, too, of the NHS staff in Southport and elsewhere who are dealing with the consequences, and of course those in our police, fire and other services working to protect communities, restore order and fix the destruction caused.

It is they – not those rioting, and not those inciting and justifying violence from afar – who best represent our country, and British values – the values that led to the creation of the NHS and have sustained it since.

There are other things that have sustained the NHS, too. One of them is stoicism, that great British trait of carrying on through adversity. Another, importantly, is migration – people coming from across the globe to become vital colleagues, with almost 200 nationalities represented in the NHS workforce today.

So carrying on, and doing what needs to be done for the patients who need us, is what the NHS will do. It’s what our colleagues in the North West did after the attack in Southport. It’s what others have done and are doing now due to the riots – treating victims and perpetrators alike.

But we shouldn’t let dedication to duty disguise the fact that for many NHS workers, seeing this flare-up of racism will leave them feeling afraid and unwelcome.

To those colleagues, my message is simple: you are welcome, you are a valued member of our community, and that community should look after you.

And to those reading this in positions of leadership, my ask of you is equally simple: in your words, but more importantly in your actions, please ensure you are demonstrating that most British value of community, now more than ever. And specifically, show in your actions that when we say we have zero tolerance of racism towards our patients or colleagues, in whatever form it takes, we really mean it – even when it is difficult or uncomfortable.

NHS trust boycotts Elon Musk’s X over hate speech and misinformation

An NHS hospital has quit the social media platform X over an increase in abuse, hate speech and misinformation after the far-right riots in England and Northern Ireland.

The former Twitter has come in for criticism over misinformation and hate speech fuelling disorder in many towns and cities, with nearly 500 people arrested so far.

After three children were fatally stabbed and eight others were injured in Southport, a fictitious identity of a Muslim asylum seeker was incorrectly identified as a suspect, leading to a wave of Islamophobia, including an attack on a mosque in the town.

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) posted on X: “Due to significant changes on this platform in recent months, X is no longer consistent with our Trust values. Therefore RNOH is closing its account. Please follow us on Facebook, Instagram & LinkedIn. Thanks to everyone who has followed & supported us for the last 13 years.”

Elon Musk , X’s activist owner, has himself taken to posting criticism of Sir Keir Starmer’s crackdown on hate speech and people inciting violence.

Among other posts, he shared a fake story that the government was considering a prison camp in the Falkland Islands and promoted the conspiracy theory that Britain has a two-tier policing – which claims right-wing protesters are treated differently to other groups.

A war of words with the prime minister began when Mr Musk claimed civil war in the UK is inevitable.

Since acquiring the then-Twitter in 2022, Mr Musk has promoted it as a platform for free speech.

The NHS trust did not reference the X owner directly but said that the platform is “currently not a safe, healthy or inclusive environment to engage and interact with our communities, and does not reflect our values, nor those of the NHS”.

It said in a statement: “Throughout the past 12 months or so, we have all witnessed an increased volume of hate speech and abusive commentary on X/Twitter. This is alongside the sustained spread and promotion of misinformation about vaccinations, as well as other important issues that require reasoned, fact-based exploration and discussion.”

It added: “Sadly, X/Twitter has become increasingly used for the spread of hate and discrimination, often targeting specific groups in our communities. RNOH will no longer be associated with the platform.”

The trust is based in Harrow, in west London, where far-right protests were rumoured to be planned on Wednesday evening. Instead, counter-protesters gathered with banners in support of immigrants.

How Secure Data Environments can help drive advances in health data research

NHS England (NHSE) is changing the way that researchers access health data in England by moving to a network of Secure Data Environments (SDEs).

We are broadly supportive of the direction of the changes, but for the SDE Network to deliver all the benefits it promises, the new UK Government must guarantee sufficient and sustained funding beyond 2025 in its next spending review. This funding needs to be commensurate with the size of the challenge and the opportunity presented by NHS health data . As such, it must allow for meaningful and continuous patient and public involvement in the creation and governance of the SDE network, ensuring that patients’ data is used with their consent and endorsement.

With th at level of support and investment , the SDE N etwork could greatly improv e how researchers access and use health data , which could have profound impacts on public health for years to come .

Secure access to health data is driving significant advances in the ways that we prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. The NHS Research SDE Network has the potential to make those advances happen faster, so we're looking forward to continuing to work with it to deliver research powered by NHS data. Now, to safeguard the SDE Network's success, the new Government must commit to funding it beyond 2025 - ensuring that our research can help more people live longer, better lives.

Using health data to create better health

In our Longer, Better Lives programme for government , we laid out how government can unlock the potential of data as a driver for change within research and health. The opportunities presented by the depth of UK health data are almost unparalleled. This is because the UK has very detailed nationwide, life-long health datasets – datasets that researchers can harness to improve our ability to prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat cancer.

However, there are currently barriers preventing researchers from using this data to its full life saving potential.

Historically, the fragmented nature of NHS systems has made it difficult for researchers to access NHS health data. This has delayed or even stopped research, as well as raising some security concerns. Encouragingly, following on from the Data Saves Lives strategy, NHSE is now looking to change this through its Data for R&D Programme. That will involve moving from a “data-dissemination” model, where most data is sent to researchers who request it, to an SDE-based “data-access” model, where researchers request access to data that always remains within NHS systems.

We believe that this is an exciting shift. If the new network is adequately financed and executed correctly, with patients and the public at the centre of its creation and governance, it has the potential to help researchers access health data more efficiently while providing greater safety and security.

How does data save lives?

High quality health data is critical for multiple strands of traditional research, including clinical trial recruitment and health system examination. Previously, the cancer research we focus on mostly involved relatively small-scale studies of essential pathways and genes. But now , the rise of modern computing and the proliferation of large-scale detailed data has also put data-driven research at the heart of lots of the most cutting-edge cancer science . For instance, for over 10 years, Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald at the University of Cambridge has been spearheading a huge project that brings together scientists, doctors and nurses from across the UK with the goal of better understanding oesophageal cancer. This impressive programme of work has seen researchers collecting tumour and blood samples from people with oesophageal cancer and decoding the cancer’s genetic sequence so that they have a complete map of the cancer’s DNA.

We need a lot of data. We can’t find the needle in the haystack by just using data from a few people.

Our Research Data Strategy reflects just how important and impactful health data has been for cancer research. It has enabled us to develop our data science community while ensuring the trust and involvement of patients and the public. We have also re cen t ly launched the Cancer Data Collaborative , a forum bringing NHSE, C ancer R esearch UK and other charities together with patient representatives to tackle the biggest challenges in cancer data.

So, how is health data currently stored and accessed in England?

At present, research and analysis using health data in England predominantly happens according to the data dissemination model. This involves the NHS transferring de-identified data to third parties via data sharing agreements. Researchers submit applications to NHS data controllers, who assess both the application and the intended data usage. Upon approval, the data is transmitted directly to the researchers, who can then analyse the data with any tools they have at their disposal.

Researchers are legally bound to use the data the NHS provides them in the ways specified in their initial application, but this can be difficult to monitor under the current system. For example, researchers are required to delete the data themselves once their access rights elapse, but the NHS doesn‘t have an easy way to verify whether this has happened. There are also other issues, such as the creation of many copies of datasets, which may be error prone, and require significant amounts of computer memory.

Currently, more than half my time is spent trying to get data in the first place.

Data dissemination essentially means that the NHS acts as a lending library. Researchers come to NHS data controllers, are verified, and are then sent health data to use outside of the NHS’s ecosystem. However, because of the size and complexity of the NHS, there is not just one point of contact. Instead, estimates suggest there are around 7,000. This means researchers need to spend a lot of time and effort to get the information they need. Imagine if reading a book involved having to apply to multiple different libraries, each with their own complex lending policies, one chapter at a time. That’s often how gathering health data fo r research works in England today. Simplifying access routes is necessary to make sure researchers can focus on research .

What is the new system?

NHSE is currently setting up a new network of SDEs as part of the Data for R&D Programme, with £175m initially allocated for this and another programme called NHS DigiTrials. The SDE Network will be formed of two parts: one large SDE covering the whole of England, containing high level national datasets, and 11 smaller subnational ones covering areas like London or the north-east, containing more detailed datasets. This should reduce the 7,000 points of data access to 12.

If the new network is properly implemented, with more effective methods of data application and granting processes, researchers will be able to obtain the data needed for their research quicker and more efficiently. To ensure this happens, the Data for R&D Programme must deliver a single front door researchers can use to access the diff ere nt S DEs .

But what is a Secure Data Environment?

An SDE is a protected space for sensitive data that can only be accessed by authorised researchers remotely. This approach ensures that patient data remains confined within the environment: while users can extract results such as tables or graphs, the raw data itself can never leave the host system. This setup grants custodians of the data more control over its usage and increases safeguards preventing misuse of data. It also allows for improvements to the data to be more easily implemented, as everyone is working from the same dataset and not multiple copies.

‘Data access by default’?

The SDE approach is sometimes referred to as ‘data access by default ’. Some media reports have implied that this means that anyone will be able to access health data on command. This is not true. Data access by default refers to the fact that the default model is based on applying to access relevant data on NHS systems rather than applying to export it elsewhere.

A simple way to think about this is to picture an SDE as a reference library for health data, rather than a lending library. After appropriate checks have been made, researchers can (remotely) enter the library to read and analyse specific data, but they can’t take it away with them. Instead, they’re only able to export the results they get from using the data. In short, the SDE approach means data remains within NHS systems, making it fundamentally more secure. This also protects the quality of the data by ensuring it remains in a single dataset, which is easier to maintain and manage.

What a re the potential benefits of the new system ?

The main potential benefits are:

Efficiency – P roperly implemented , a reduction in access points should make it easier and quicker for researchers to access health data.
Security – Because data remains on NHS systems, it is easier to monitor what researchers are doing with it.

These benefits are reflected in the fact that there is great deal of support for SDE-like systems, often called Trusted Research Environments (TREs), across the sector and in UK research communities. Examples of TREs include Scotland’s Data Safe Haven Programme , the SAIL databank in Wales and Genomics England’s Research Environment .

Does Cancer Research UK have an SDE-like platform?

Yes! Our Trusted Research Programme provides a Trusted Research Environment (TRE) , an SDE-like system, alongside advisory services to support researchers dealing with sensitive health and related data.

Our TRE also provides access to high-performance computing facilities for advanced analytics, machine learning, and AI development for researchers across the UK who don’t have a suitable and safe set up to store and analyse patient data. Our Trusted Research Programme is currently onboarding two pilot projects and it is helping maximise the safe and effective collection and re-use of cancer related data.

Our ambition is to develop a portfolio of research projects and data that can be used to advance research across multiple different areas and help us better understand cancer. We want to harness emerging technologies, including AI, to achieve our cancer-beating goals and our TRE will help us do this.

Sounds good! But what’s needed for the NHS Research SDE Network to be a success?

There are a few things that NHSE and the Data for R&D Programme need to do to take full advantage of this opportunity to improve data access and data security. We’re currently developing a policy paper that will outline some of the specifics, including points on pricing, avoiding further fragmentation, and ensuring patients and the public can be meaningfully involved in the creation and governance of the network.

However, most importantly, the new UK Government needs to use its next spending review to ensure that the central SDE and all subnational SDEs are on a sustainable footing beyond 2025 . This includes providing the Data for R&D Programme with the resources it needs to make sure that access to data is more timely and less complicated than it is today, and that it can be delivered at a price that doesn’t stop researchers from carrying out their vital work . The SDE N etwork also needs resources and support to meaningfully involve patients and the public .

The guaranteed funding must be commensurate with the size of this challenge. The SDE Network has the potential to improve data access for a generation, but only if it can secure sustained, significant long-term support and investment.

Kamala Harris Picks Tim Walz As Running Mate: Here’s What To Know About Him

Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to serve as her running mate in the 2024 presidential race—as Harris tries to gain ground on former President Donald Trump with just over three months until the November election.

Harris announced she asked Walz to be her running mate in an Instagram post Tuesday, shortly after multiple news outlets reported on the decision, praising Walz’ “convictions on fighting for middle class families” and saying what impressed her most was his “deep commitment to his family.”

Walz accepted the offer Tuesday morning, calling it the “honor of a lifetime,” and adding: “Vice President Harris is showing us the politics of what’s possible. It reminds me a bit of the first day of school.”

Walz, the 60-year-old father of two and Nebraska-born governor of Minnesota had emerged as a vice presidential frontrunner, along with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and several others in the weeks leading up to the decision.

Harris’ campaign reportedly vetted about a dozen contenders, and her rumored list was whittled to Walz and Shapiro in the hours leading up to the announcement, which was widely expected to happen Tuesday after Democratic delegates concluded voting for the party’s nominee Monday, with 99% selecting Harris.

While not at the forefront of national politics, Walz established himself as a moderate Democrat in Congress—where he served as a representative for Minnesota from 2007 to 2019—and as the governor of Minnesota, a role he’s held since 2019, where he also serves as chair of the national Democratic Governors Association.

Walz is seen as an appealing option for independents and moderate Democrats as a working-class politician with a rural background, who exudes the appearance of “someone with a lived experience that is so comparable to so many of the people in rural America,” former Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., told The New York Times last week.

Before running for office, Walz, a graduate of Chadron State College in Nebraska, served in the Army National Guard, and then worked as a teacher, first on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, where he met his wife Gwen, a fellow teacher, and then in China and later as a high school teacher in Mankato, Minnesota, south of Minneapolis.

Walz initially entered politics as a member of former Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign, a spot he took after he said some of his high school students were questioned for having a Kerry sticker when he took them to a campaign rally for then-president George W. Bush, MinnPost reported.

As governor, some of Walz’ political accomplishments include ensuring tuition-free meals at participating state universities, enshrining abortion rights into state law, banning conversion therapy and providing protections for gender-affirming healthcare—Walz recently defended those measures against right-wing criticism in a CNN interview earlier this month, joking: “What a monster! Kids are eating and having full bellies so they can go learn and women are making their own healthcare decisions.”

Walz also signed a bill last May expanding voting rights in Minnesota for an estimated 55,000 formerly incarcerated residents, and in 2020, oversaw the state’s response to both the COVID-19 pandemic and police brutality protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of police, though he faced criticism from state Republicans over his delayed response to protests following Floyd’s killing.

Walz and Harris will make their first joint appearance at 5:30 p.m. EDT on Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Chief Critics

Walz has faced backlash from Minnesota Republicans largely over his actions to protect gender-affirming care—a topic that has become central on GOP tickets. John Helmberger, the CEO of Christian conservative group Minnesota Family Council, argued Walz’s executive order to protect gender-affirming care “victimizes vulnerable young people.” In the weeks leading up to the nomination announcement, Walz also sparked Republican outrage after he referred to “weird people on the other side,” and criticized Trump’s laugh and apparent obsession of Hannibal Lecter as “weird.” In response, former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called the “weird” argument “dumb & juvenile,” while Donald Trump. Jr. responded to claims that Trump running mate JD Vance is “weird” with a video posted of Harris with a drag queen.

What Has Trump Said About Walz?

The Trump campaign attacked Walz in a video after Harris announced him as her running mate, labeling him as a “left-wing extremist.” Trump’s campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt also slammed Walz, saying it’s “no surprise that San Francisco Liberal Kamala Harris wants West Coast wannabe Tim Walz as her running mate,” claiming Walz has tried to “reshape Minnesota in the image of the Golden State.”

Who Has Supported Walz As Harris’ Running Mate?

A group of Democratic lawmakers praised Harris’ choice of Walz on Tuesday, including contenders Shapiro and Sen. Mark Kelly , D-Ariz., as well as President Joe Biden , former President Barack Obama , Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer , D-N.Y., and the Congressional Black Caucus PAC .

Will Walz’ Minnesota Connection Help Harris In November?

Presidential candidates have a long history of strategically choosing running mates in swing states or candidates who appeal to certain voters in hopes of gaining ground in the presidential election. This November, Minnesota will be a critical swing state for Harris, one of seven key states Biden won in 2020 that polls have shown to be close matches in 2024, along with Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. A Fox News poll conducted late last month found Harris leading Trump in Minnesota by six points (52%-46%) in a head-to-head match—Harris leads Trump 47%-41% in the poll when including third-party candidates such as independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (7%). That lead marks a turnaround for the Democratic ticket in Minnesota: An Emerson College poll released one week before Biden’s disastrous debate performance found the incumbent tied 45%-45% with Trump (10% undecided). Harris trails behind Trump in the four other swing states (Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and Wisconsin), according to recent polls , and the two are tied in Michigan and Pennsylvania, according to Fox News’ poll.

Since launching her campaign, Harris has landed major endorsements from Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. One of her biggest endorsements came last week from former President Barack Obama. Sources close to Obama had said the former president wanted to wait until after Biden’s Oval Office address last week to make the announcement, and wanted his public endorsement to stand on its own, NBC News reported. Another source told The New York Times Obama wanted to wait until Harris was officially named the party nominee, a process that could unfold as early as Aug. 1, following a rules change approved by the Democratic National Convention’s rules panel last week (party nominees are typically chosen by delegates at the Democratic National Convention after the conclusion of the primary cycle).

Key Background

Even before his disastrous performance in a June 27 debate against former President Donald Trump, Biden—the oldest president in U.S. history—had faced questions over his age, perhaps most prominently after the release of a Department of Justice special counsel report in February that found multiple cases of Biden’s memory failing. Those concerns ramped up substantially after CNN’s presidential debate, a 90-minute affair that resparked mounting concerns over Biden’s advanced age and potential cognitive decline. Facing calls from donors, lawmakers and pundits to step down, Biden ultimately announced on Sunday he would end his reelection bid, and quickly endorsed Harris for president. Harris became the presumptive nominee the next day after swiftly amassing the support of enough delegates to clinch the nomination.

UK data watchdog to fine NHS vendor Advanced for security failures prior to LockBit ransomware attack

U.K. data protection authorities have issued a provisional fine of more than £6 million to NHS vendor Advanced after finding that the company failed to properly secure the information of thousands of people later stolen in a ransomware attack.

In a statement, the U.K. Information Commissioner’s office (ICO) said it issued the fine after determining that the cybercriminals behind the August 2022 ransomware attack “initially accessed a number of Advanced’s health and care systems via a customer account that did not have multi-factor authentication.”

The cyberattack on Advanced led to widespread disruption to NHS services across the United Kingdom at the time, causing outages at the NHS non-emergency 111 line and forcing hospitals and medical practices to resort to pen and paper for weeks. Physicians at affected NHS trusts reported that they could not access patient records .

Mandiant, the incident response firm that helped to investigate the hack, said malware used by the LockBit ransomware gang was used in the attack; though, LockBit never publicly claimed responsibility for the cyberattack on its dark web leak site. That can be an indication that a hacked company may have paid a ransom. Advanced previously declined to say if it had paid one.

By October 2022, Advanced said in its post-incident report that the cybercriminals broke into Advanced’s network “using legitimate third-party credentials,” implying that there was no multi-factor authentication on the account.

Now the ICO appears to be confirming that.

The ICO said it’s provisionally issuing a fine of £6.09 million ($7.75 million) after the watchdog said Advanced provisionally “breached data protection law in failing to implement appropriate security measures prior to the attack to protect the personal information it was processing.”

The watchdog also confirmed that the cyberattack led to the theft of data of close to 83,000 people in the United Kingdom, including phone numbers and medical records, and details of “how to gain entry to the homes of 890 people who were receiving care at home,” the ICO said.

The fine is provisional, the watchdog said, meaning the penalty may change. ICO Commissioner John Edwards said the watchdog made the decision to go public in this case in part to “avoid similar incidents in the future.”

“I urge all organisations, especially those handling sensitive health data, to urgently secure external connections with multi-factor authentication,” said Edwards.

Spokespeople for Advanced did not respond to a request for comment prior to publication.
