For many students, one of the most difficult parts of their academic journey is figuring out how to manage their time and stay focused. It isn't just a challenge for school students in modern education – many working professionals also struggle with successful time management!

Therefore, mastering time management skills as a student can not only benefit you during your academic pursuits, but also throughout your professional career. It's important for students to learn how to focus on homework so they're completing assignments on time and not rushing through the learning process.

Yet despite your best efforts and planning, there will likely come a time when you find yourself running out of time to complete homework assignments.

How to Focus on Homework When You're Almost Out of Time

Is your homework deadline fast approaching? Are you unsure how you're going to complete an assignment in time? If you find yourself in this situation, the first recommended action is to assess the remaining time before the homework is due.

Depending on how many hours you have before the deadline, you might still be able to focus on homework to complete it on time. I would recommend at least doing some work on your assignment to get it going.

If you decide to ask the instructor for an extension, there's no guarantee they'll grant it to you. If you don't receive an extension, you should try to submit something, even if it's incomplete. Any score is better than a zero or incomplete.

5 Steps to Help You Focus on Homework That's Due Soon

Here is some advice about how to complete homework when your time is limited.

Tip #1: Eliminate Distractions and Find a Creative Environment

Start by eliminating any distractions that might prevent you from being able to focus on homework. Turn off your phone or other media devices and do not visit distracting websites, like social media platforms or online gaming sites. These harmful distractions will only prevent you from being able to maintain your focus on homework.

Also, gather your study supplies and find a quiet study space where you can focus on homework without a lot of background noise. If you can't find a quiet place, consider playing white noise or calm music such as classical music from classical composers – whatever you prefer listening to that helps you maintain focus!

Such music or other calming sounds can help drown out loud conversations or other distractions. That elimination of distractions is particularly beneficial if you're working in public places like coffee shops or libraries.

As you prepare to focus for a long period of time, remember that you'll need to still take care of yourself and you likely won't be able to complete your homework in one sitting. The human brain needs sustenance and breaks, especially if you're staring at a computer screen for several hours.

Be sure to pack healthy snacks and a water bottle. If you start to feel tired, start to fall asleep, or find your mind wandering, take a short break to get fresh air and get your blood flowing. Eating healthy snacks can help keep you awake and allow your brain to focus on homework.

I recommend scheduling a break ahead of time so you have something to look forward to and maintain focus during allotted work times. Giving your brain and body a break periodically will help you feel awake and stay motivated in the long run so you can continue to focus on completing your homework.

Also, be sure to communicate your homework study plan to a family member or others around you. They are more likely to give you space and limit distractions if they know you are busy and need some quiet time to stay focused on getting your homework assignments done.

Tip #2: Divide a Homework Assignment into Manageable Tasks

Break your school assignment down into smaller tasks. Make a list of what needs to be done for that particular assignment, set priorities to focus on, and start at the top of your list.

Many times, a written project will require some library research. Preparing for a test might mean reviewing notes, flashcards, and course materials. A list of necessary tasks will help you stay organized, stay focused, and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Tip #3: Seek Out Assistance

When it comes to homework, you don't have to go it alone. Many universities provide online resources to help out. Online libraries may provide resource material or special learning tools that can help you expedite your research efforts and help you through the educational process.

Perhaps you can find a study buddy from your class to help you do your homework quicker or share study notes. Meeting in a group study room, for example, may help you stay accountable, minimize distractions, and, ultimately, stay focused on completing your schoolwork.

Most universities also provide tutoring services. Reaching out to a tutor assumes you have at least a day or two before turning in your assignment, so if you've got limited time it will likely be hard to schedule time with a tutor. However, if your instructor approves an extension for the assignment, working with a tutor can be an excellent part of your plan to complete your homework.

Leveraging these school resources and support can help you understand your assigned material better, maintain focus, and often complete work faster.

Tip #4: If You Are Granted an Extended Deadline, Stick with It

If your instructor agrees to extend your deadline and submit work late, adhere to that deadline. Set time aside to complete all the tasks for that one assignment and hold yourself accountable.

If you run behind on one task, you must work even harder to stay on track. Keeping to a task list, establishing a study routine, and having progressive deadlines will help you maintain focus and stay motivated.

Tip #5: Review and Edit Your Work Thoroughly

Be sure to carefully proofread and edit any written school assignments, especially if you’re running late. Checking over your work before submitting it makes you more likely to catch any errors or mistakes.

Many times, the best way to find errors is to read your paper aloud. Once you hear what you’ve written, your mistakes will be evident.

In addition, consider using a tool like Grammarly to help edit your work. You can also have someone else read the paper and offer comments. If there is enough time, a tutor can also be used to edit your class assignments.

Uh-Oh, Homework Is Due Soon: How to Ask for an Extension

If a homework assignment is due in mere hours, contact your instructor immediately to explain your situation and request more time.

But before you email, text, or call your instructor, take some time to do research and make a reasonable proposal. You should review your class syllabus or course materials regarding class assignment deadlines and late penalties.

Some universities have a policy not to accept homework turned in three to seven days after a deadline, so knowing the parameters of being late is critical for your request to the instructor. For example, if school policy does not allow an instructor to accept late work after three days, then it is not a good idea to propose turning in your work a week after the deadline.

When you contact your instructor, offer the instructor a new deadline for your work and ask about late penalties. Those late penalties are usually in the syllabus or course materials, but instructors often have some leeway in enforcing them. Getting an instructor’s agreement in writing will be helpful if anything goes wrong or if the instructor forgets the deal regarding the late schoolwork.

Be Sure to Tell Your Instructor Why Class Assignments Will Be Late

You should also explain the reason for your inability to complete the assignment. Always tell the truth, as karma has a way of catching up with people. There could be unusual circumstances or disruptions in your life, such as:

  • Changes in work
  • New military orders or work assignments
  • Family problems
  • Birth or adoption of a child
  • Other life events

I would not recommend claiming that you do not understand the assignment as your excuse for being late. If you did not understand your class assignment, why are you waiting until hours before it is due to ask questions?

If you are in a situation where the deadline is very close, read the assignment a couple of times to ensure you understand it. If you have a question about your class assignment, you can ask your professor when you request an extension.

However, there's a good chance you may not get a response from them until after the assignment is due. In the future, read the assignment at the start of the week and ask a question about it then.

Granting Extensions Depend on the Instructor, But It's Worth Asking

As an instructor, I typically stick to what is stated in the syllabus or course materials when I’m choosing to impose penalties for late work. However, there are some cases where I am flexible. Getting an agreement in writing ensures you get what you expect, rather than having your instructor forget about the reason you’re late with your class assignments.  

The process of asking for an extension will be difficult, and there is no guarantee that your teacher will accept late work. Some classes and instructors are adamant about not accepting late work. I would still recommend asking before the deadline, as you might be successful.

By following the advice I have recommended, you can hopefully complete your schoolwork on time and avoid late submission penalties on homework assignments.

If you do need to ask your instructor for an extension, remember that they are not obligated to grant it to you. Be ready to accept the lost points and work harder on your remaining school assignments.

By making a few easy changes in your homework preparation and planning, you can hopefully avoid needing to rush through homework assignments or asking for an extension. Learning how to focus on homework assignments in advance may help you enjoy the learning process more and complete coursework on time.

Struggling to Submit Assignments on Time?

Picture this: after a long week, you’re sitting on the couch with a snack rewatching your favorite show. It’s around ten at night, the blanket’s warm, and you’re comfier than you’ve ever felt before. Right before you fall asleep, you get a nagging feeling you forgot something. You shoot up as that cold pit of dread hits – you have an essay due at midnight. And you haven’t even started writing. Worse, you don’t even know what to write about. If you’ve had this experience or a similar one, don’t worry – you’re not alone. Every semester, thousands of students struggle to submit assignments on time.

And that feeling, that cold pit of dread, still haunts some of us years after graduation. Notably, graduates report having nightmares of missing that important assignment.

Many don’t start working until the last second for a variety of reasons. Indeed, while the stereotype for a procrastinator is the lazy, uncaring college student, many have other responsibilities that take up a lot of time. And with the college mental health crisis being a hot topic in higher education, there’s a lot more to consider than simple laziness.

However, there are methods you can use to turn in work on time. From detailed planning to consistent schedules, students can build basic time management skills as they adjust to college life.

Why it Matters

While these skills are very important later in life, students may not realize how vital it is to turn in homework on time. They don’t see why it matters if they submit their essay at 11:59 pm or 2:30 am. As long as it’s in. But most college professors set some sort of penalty for late work and some can be devastating.

Indeed, the best student can turn in the highest quality essay and still receive a failing grade if it’s submitted late. And the strictest instructors don’t care if you have a valid reason. However,  late policies  vary from professor to professor. Some will give full points as long as you either submitted high-quality work or reached out to them ahead of time. Others won’t accept an essay if you turn it in even a minute after the deadline. In the middle, you’ll find instructors who deduct points based on how many days late you are.

Regardless, unless you find one of those kind professors, your grade will suffer. And you may find yourself repeating the class if your grade takes too many hits. Truly, it’s important to submit assignments on time.

4 Tips to Submit Assignments on Time

Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to just start submitting work on time. No one can wake up one day and have it all together. If it were that simple, we wouldn’t have so many students procrastinating their way through a degree. To succeed, you have to retrain your brain and build  time management skills .

Below we will go over some of the ways you learn how to submit assignments on time.

1. Create a Calendar

Once you start a semester or recognize your struggle to stay on schedule, you should create a calendar of all of the assignments and due dates. Your professor will either provide a schedule or you can find one in the  syllabus . Using these resources, plot all of your courses’ assignments in either a planning notebook or on your phone for the entire semester. You’ll likely need to update them as you go and due dates change. Whether you go traditional or digital should depend on what tool you’ll actually want to use.  

Either way, you’ll have a tool that can help you submit assignments on time.

Indeed, some people love to buy  notebooks and planners , but then never touch them. They tuck them away one day and never pick them back up. Or they don’t update them when due dates change. Indeed, there is no button to quickly change what you’ve written.

But, notably, we tend to remember things better once we’ve written them down. Thus, they can help improve your memory overall. And some students don’t like notifications or will casually snooze them as soon as they go off. For them, a planner works best to help them submit assignments on time.

Going Digital

Today, our phones come with calendars built-in,  apps  that allow you to create events and set reminders weeks in advance. Thus, even the basic ones are perfect for students. You should set up a handful of notifications to go off days and weeks before your due dates. And for those big assignments, you may want to set up reminders two to three weeks beforehand.

If the basic calendar apps aren’t your cup of tea, there are many specialty options designed for students. They’ll allow you to create custom schedules for each of your classes, color code assignments, and more.

In the end, calendars are helpful as they help you remember assignments. Digital ones send you regular customizable reminders. And planners allow you to visualize the work ahead. Whatever your preference, we recommend creating a calendar to help you submit assignments on time. You may even consider using both to ensure that your work gets done.

2. Create (and Stick to) a Schedule

Creating a schedule  is one of the best ways to stay on track in your courses. We’ve all gotten caught up with friends, our favorite show, or just a really good nap before and pushed our homework to the side. Indeed, most of us when left to our own devices will choose fun and relaxing options before doing schoolwork. And that’s okay – you deserve to rest, too. Naps and friends still should be a part of your weekly schedule, but you need to make sure you have time for everything.

Thus, we recommend setting a specific time to read, study, and write essays each week. If possible, it should be at the same time week after week. This scheduling will help you build a routine, which can help you submit assignments on time. Notably, building a routine makes it easier to sit down as you’ll feel that it’s time to work. Instead of thinking “I’ll do it later,” and then finding that you’re too exhausted later, you’ll get your work done

And it may actually help you see your friends more, as procrastination often costs us more free time than it saves. For example, you tell people you can’t come out as you have to do your essay, but, instead, you deep clean the oven. Your essay still needs to be written and you miss another possible night out tomorrow.

3. Ask for Help

A common reason students put assignments off is that they’re confused or frustrated by something. Maybe the rubric wasn’t clear or they don’t understand some of the content. Instead of asking for help, they’ll think “I’ll do it later.”

For some, later ends up being the night before it’s due. Students stay frustrated at the thought of the essay or worksheet and don’t want to touch it. And because the assignment needs extra work to get around the confusion, they end up spending hours on something that could have been finished in one. These students don’t submit assignments on time because they need help and don’t know how to ask for it.

Truly, people of all ages struggle with asking for help. They feel like a burden or want to do it all themselves. However, knowing when you need help is a sign of wisdom, not weakness. We can’t know or do everything ourselves.

If you’re falling behind because you’re confused,  email your professor , use online resources, ask a classmate, or try your college’s tutoring center.

4. Be Kind to Yourself

Finally, one way to help yourself submit assignments on time is to let yourself off the hook. Basically, don’t be hard on yourself when or if you fall behind.

Negative thinking often becomes circular thinking . We fall into a pit of bad thoughts and anger pointed at ourselves. And when we reach that point, it becomes harder and harder to get back on track. We think we should have been able to do this whole college thing with ease and we’re lesser for struggling. But it’s simply not true. Many of us will miss a deadline in our lives, whether at school or work or with another responsibility. It happens. As we said at the beginning of this article, there are a hundred different reasons students fall behind.

Many of us have jobs, some of us have families, and the student mental health crisis is real. Don’t be too hard on yourself for missing a deadline or two. Continue to reward yourself for your hard work and aim to do better.

Homework, a necessary evil according to many teachers, has a lot of students tied up in knots. Some students can never seem to get things turned in on time. In fact, many students do not even realize that they  have  homework until a friend from class texts them or they overhear someone in the halls talking about Ms. So-and-so's terrible, no-good, awful, horrifying worksheet for Chemistry that is due the next day. These five tips for completing your homework on time, however, should help you get that homework finished on time. 

Tip 1: Rely On a Planning System

Most of you by now are well acquainted with a homework planner. It has the dates, the school subjects you are taking, and a whole lot of blank space to write down your homework assignments. Use these planners if you have them. Writing with an actual pencil or pen may seem almost archaic what with technology virtually doing everything for us, but the kinesthetic movement of writing down an assignment into one of those little squares (Language Arts test tomorrow - STUDY TONIGHT), will actually help solidify that homework in your brain.

Plus, when you are packing up to go home at the end of the school day, all you have to do is open up that planner to see which books, folders, and binders need to go home with you so you will not miss out anything that you need to do that evening.

Some people  hate  using planners. They'd rather walk on a pile of crushed glass than actually write something down in a planner. That's quite all right. One student kept a wadded up piece of paper in his pocket where he'd scrawl his assignments. It worked for him, so it was fine. For those of you not keen on planners or crumpled up notes, your phone can come in really handy. Just download a productivity app and type your assignments in there. Or, keep track of all the work due in the notes section of your phone. Or, snap a picture of the homework board in each teacher's class before you head out into the hallway. Or, if you are really dead-set against anything planner-related, then just send yourself a text after each class with your homework assignments for the night.

No matter which planning system you prefer, use it. Check off each item once you get it in your backpack. Your brain can only process so much information at a time, so you absolutely must write your homework down if you plan to complete it on time. 

Tip 2: Prioritize Your Homework Assignments

All assignments are not created equal. It's strongly recommended you use a prioritizing system when you sit down at home with your homework. Try a system a little something like this:

  • Examples: Studying for a major test coming up tomorrow. Finishing a major project due tomorrow. Writing an essay worth a LOT of points that is due tomorrow. 
  • Examples:  Studying for a quiz coming up tomorrow. Completing a homework sheet that is due tomorrow. Reading a chapter that is due tomorrow. 
  • Examples: Studying for a spelling test that will occur on Friday. Writing a blog and posting it on the class board by Friday. Finish a book upon which you will take a quiz on Friday.
  • Examples: Reviewing chapters for the midterm exam. Working on an on-going project, research paper, or long assignment due at the end of the quarter. Completing a packet that isn't due for two weeks. 

Once you've prioritized the work you have to do, complete all the 1's first, then the 2's, moving down as you go. That way, if you find yourself pressed for time because Great-Grandma decided to stop over for family dinner and your mom insisted you spend the evening playing bridge with her despite the fact that you have hours of homework ahead of you, then you will not have missed anything vitally important to your grade. 

Tip 3: Get the Worst Assignment Over With First

So, maybe you absolutely hate writing essays (But, why, though when all you have to do is follow these essay tips? ) and you have a major essay staring you in the face that  must  be completed before tomorrow. You also have to study for a major math test, complete a social studies blog by Friday, study for the ACT  next month, and finish up your science worksheet from class. Your "1" assignments would be the essay and the math test. Your "2" assignment is the science worksheet, the "3" assignment is that blog, and the "4" assignment is studying for the ACT. 

Ordinarily, you would start with the science worksheet because you  love  science, but that would be a big mistake. Start with those "1" assignments and knock out that essay first. Why? Because you hate it. And completing the worst assignment first gets it off your mind, out of your homework cache, and makes everything that comes after it appears to be really, really easy. It will be an absolute  joy  to complete that science worksheet once you have written the essay. Why rob yourself of joy? 

Then, once you've completed the stuff due first, you can focus on putting in a little bit of time on the ACT. Easy peasy.

Tip 4: Take Planned Breaks

Some people believe that sitting down to complete homework means that you literally park your behind in a chair and you don't move it for the next four thousand hours or so. That is one of the worst study ideas in history. Your brain only has the capacity to stay focused for about 45 minutes (maybe even less for some of you) before it goes on the fritz and starts wanting to make you get up and dance the Roger Rabbit. So, schedule your study time with breaks actually built in . Work for 45 minutes, then take a 10-minute break to do whatever it is people your age like to do. Then, rinse and repeat. It looks a little something like this:

Homework Time:

  • 45 minutes: Work on "1" assignments, starting with the absolute worst.
  • 10 minutes: Get a snack, play Pokemon Go!, surf Instagram
  • 45 minutes: Work on "1" assignments again. You know you didn't finish.
  • 10 minutes: Do some jumping jacks, dance the Macarena, polish your nails.
  • 45 minutes: Work on "2" assignments and maybe even finish with any 3s and 4s. Put everything in your backpack.

Completing your homework on time is a learned skill. It requires some discipline and not everyone is naturally disciplined. So, you have to practice checking that you have everything you need for homework when you are still at school, prioritizing your work, plunging into the assignments you loathe, and taking planned breaks. Isn't your grade worth it?

Do you have homework that you need to work on but can’t seem to get it done? Maybe you are having difficulty balancing between schoolwork, studies and your duties at home. Many teachers believe homework is a necessary evil.

But I guess most students would disagree. Procrastination is the number one factor that causes us to keep us from doing our homework. The following tips will help you stay on track with your assignments and help you ensure that you submit them on time:

We often put off tasks that seem challenging or tedious at first glance. The hardest part of doing your homework is starting. To overcome this, just take out the assignment and place it on the study table.

It will push you one step closer to getting the work done.

2. Have a Dedicated Study Area

To get any job done, you need to have an area created just for handling that matter. It’s the number one reason why most freelancers can’t get much work done if they work on their beds. Been there, done that. The area should be organized and conducive for you to deal with your homework.

3. Keep Away from Distractions

In this digital age, we can quickly access vast information, but it comes with the challenge of increased distractions. From getting notifications from your social media accounts to constantly be checking your email, it takes your focus away from your studies. Use apps that encourage concentration, e.g., StayFocusd. Switch off your phone and attend to the assignment.

4. Time Management

Set aside time each week to work on your homework. It should be when you are alert. Plan to use this set time, each day, to get any pending assignments done. Remember to prioritize by starting with the tasks that are due the soonest.

5. Start with The Toughest Assignment

We all have preferences. Sometimes you can’t wait to start the assignment, and other time, the thought of it could make you sick. Get the hardest assignment out of the way, first. When done, you will realize that the subsequent tasks are much easier to handle.

6. Break It Down

There will be a time when an assignment you love feels like it’s too much to handle. This dread may keep you from searching for the information that is needed. If it’s an essay, start with the outline. Break down the report into manageable parts and work on each, step by step.

7. Take Breaks

Just as you do when studying, you need to re-energize your brain and body. For most people, their concentration span is 45 minutes at most. Schedule the time to work, including breaks.

Work on the assignment for 45 minutes and takes breaks of 10 minutes, after each interval. You can do whatever during the breaks.

8. Create a Reward System

Having a reward system will motivate you to keep doing what you are doing. After working for two hours with the regular breaks, you can take a longer  break. Or you could watch one more episode of your favorite show. The reward doesn’t have to be something huge; it could even be a piece of your favorite candy.

9. Don’t Multitask

Handle each task one at a time. Doing too much at the same time will lower your productivity. And thus, you will spend more time on a job and usually that time will be more than you would have needed.

10. Get Help

Work on the school work independently. When necessary, get assistance from tutors, peers, family members, friends, etc. When students hand in assignments that they feel good about, it increases their self-esteem and confidence.

You can also consider getting a study buddy. They keep you updated on any missed work, and could provide useful resources to help you in your studies.

Say no more to handing in your homework late or always finding it difficult to start on your assignments. Instead, adopt the tips outlined above.

Spend less time on homework

How many times have you found yourself still staring at your textbook around midnight (or later!) even when you started your homework hours earlier? Those lost hours could be explained by Parkinson’s Law, which states, “Work expands to fill the time available for its completion.” In other words, if you give yourself all night to memorize those geometry formulas for your quiz tomorrow, you’ll inevitably find that a 30 minute task has somehow filled your entire evening.

We know that you have more homework than ever. But even with lots and lots to do, a few tweaks to your study routine could help you spend less time getting more accomplished. Here are 8 steps to make Parkinson’s Law work to your advantage:

1. Make a list

This should be a list of everything that has to be done that evening. And we mean, everything—from re-reading notes from this morning’s history class to quizzing yourself on Spanish vocabulary.

2. Estimate the time needed for each item on your list

You can be a little ruthless here. However long you think a task will take, try shaving off 5 or 10 minutes. But, be realistic. You won’t magically become a speed reader.

3. Gather all your gear

Collect EVERYTHING you will need for the homework you are working on (like your laptop for writing assignments and pencils for problem sets). Getting up for supplies takes you off course and makes it that much harder to get back to your homework.

The constant blings and beeps from your devices can make it impossible to focus on what you are working on. Switch off or silence your phones and tablets, or leave them in another room until it’s time to take a tech break.

5. Time yourself

Noting how much time something actually takes will help you estimate better and plan your next study session.

6. Stay on task

If you’re fact checking online, it can be so easy to surf on over to a completely unrelated site. A better strategy is to note what information you need to find online, and do it all at once at the end of the study session.

7. Take plenty of breaks

Most of us need a break between subjects or to break up long stretches of studying. Active breaks are a great way to keep your energy up. Tech breaks can be an awesome way to combat the fear of missing out that might strike while you are buried in your work, but they also tend to stretch much longer than originally intended. Stick to a break schedule of 10 minutes or so.

8. Reward yourself! 

Finish early? If you had allocated 30 minutes for reading a biology chapter and it only took 20, you can apply those extra 10 minutes to a short break—or just move on to your next task. If you stay on track, you might breeze through your work quickly enough to catch up on some Netflix.

Our best piece of advice? Keep at it. The more you use this system, the easier it will become. You’ll be surprised by how much time you can shave off homework just by focusing and committing to a distraction-free study plan.

Learning how to effectively manage your time enables you to meet deadlines, explore new ideas, and find a healthy work-life balance. If you feel overwhelmed and overworked, learning a few time management tools may help you reduce stress and plan how to meet your goals.

In this article, we'll outline seven skills that, when developed, can give a big boost to your productivity.

What is time management?

Time management is the art of effectively planning your time. This allows you to efficiently and productively complete the activities and tasks you need to in the appropriate amount of time. Time management also involves prioritizing your to-do list so that you complete urgent or important tasks before others. This helps to avoid missing important deadlines or rushing through important tasks.

7 time management skills

If you're ready to take control of your time, work on developing these seven time management skills.

1. Prioritization.

To effectively manage your time, you will need to decide in which order you should complete your tasks. Reviewing your schedule each day and labeling your to-do list with whether tasks are urgent, important, or neither can help you decide when and how to manage your time throughout the day. In general, you will want to prioritize your urgent tasks in the order of their importance. Following this, you can complete your non-urgent tasks in the same manner. This makes sure you complete critical tasks with the needed attention and time.

One key difference when prioritizing tasks will be between “urgent” and “important” tasks. Urgent tasks are ones that you must complete as soon as possible, while important tasks are those that matter, and not doing them may lead to negative consequences, but there is more flexibility on when they get done.

For example, picking up your prescription from the pharmacy is an important task because you likely need the medication, and waiting too long could have negative health consequences. However, you may have freedom over the next couple of days as to when you pick up the prescription. If you are expecting an important phone call and your phone rings, then picking up the phone call is an urgent task. This is because it is a task that demands your immediate attention.

2. Goal setting

Goals give a measurable way to determine progress toward the end product. Setting goals can help you organize your to-do list and determine the priority of your tasks. If you have a goal set for the end of each week or month, then you can create a priority list specifically for each goal. This can reduce the feeling of being stressed or overwhelmed when working toward larger goals.

3. Planning

Writing down your schedule can give you a realistic idea of how much time you have to allocate to different tasks. For example, you may have a standard 9-to-5 work day and assume you have eight hours to complete your five project-based tasks of the day. Let’s say you then write down your schedule, and see you have an hour-long lunch meeting, a 30-minute internal meeting on a different floor, and have to leave 30 minutes early to pick up your kids from school. When you write this down, you see you actually have six hours outside of meetings.

By breaking down your schedule, you’ll realize each meeting is a 10-minute walk from your office. In addition to this, you know it takes you at least 10 minutes to get organized at your desk before beginning work each time you return, and you will need a 30-minute break in the day to recharge. You now realize you have to factor in 40 minutes of walking time and 50 minutes of non-working time at your desk. This leaves you 4.5 hours of working time for your project-based tasks.

By writing down your schedule, you can better allocate time for each task and make reasonable plans for your day.

Tip: Analyzing your daily and weekly patterns can help you find which times in the day you are typically most productive. Some people may find they tend to have hours of uninterrupted time before lunch, while others may work their best in the afternoons or evenings. By understanding when you are able to focus best, you can schedule more complex tasks during these hours. For mindless and simple tasks, you can schedule these assignments during less focused hours.

4. Delegation

Delegating tasks is an important skill to avoid being overwhelmed. If you have the capacity to delegate tasks within your workplace, consider assigning certain projects to team members that have the capacity to take them on. This gives you time to focus on more challenging tasks.

5. Setting boundaries and saying "no"

If your supervisor or colleague asks you to complete a task and you do not have the time, practice being assertively honest about your work capacity and current workload. Taking on too many responsibilities can prevent us from completing important work and contributes to missing deadlines. If you are repeatedly assigned more tasks than you are able to effectively complete, consider scheduling a meeting with your supervisor to discuss the limits of your role and how you can best perform in your current position.

Creating an organized workspace can help you focus on your assignments and prevent wasting time on distractions. To work productively, make sure you are able to find needed materials, a place where nobody will interrupt you, and a comfortable space.

Instead of trying to complete several tasks at once, focus on one task at a time. This may improve the quality of completed tasks and allow you to reduce distractions.

7. Automation

Many technologies exist to automate common workplace tasks. Depending on your profession, using project management software, human resource software, email templates, or scheduling software may be able to help streamline your workload.

To change your behavior, you must start placing as much value on the timely completion of your assignments as you do on their overall quality.

List the characteristics that make you proud of your work-it’s original, unconventional, and so on – and add “completed on time” to that list. In addition, set deadlines for completing portions of each assignment, rather than thinking only of the project’s final due date.

Finally, schedule appointments with your professors to get feedback about your ideas, discuss an outline, or review your progress. This holds you accountable-and shows your professors that you’ve gotten serious about meeting deadlines.

Junior year of college, my schedule was totally packed. Between a full class load, working two campus jobs, writing for the student newspaper, and singing with the gospel choir, I had a lot to manage.

Sometime during the spring semester, I created a spreadsheet that outlined my days, hour by hour.

My goal every week (along with completing assigned readings and submitting assignments on time) was to finish my weekend homework on Saturday, so I could have Sundays totally off from school. The spreadsheet and my old-fashioned paper planner — where I kept track of every assignment and deadline — made this seemingly impossible feat possible .

I’d work in the library on Friday nights until it closed, and sometimes repeat the act on Saturdays, but Sundays were homework-free.

Time management is a challenge for many college students. But to succeed in higher education, you need to make time work for you.

The Basics (and Benefits) of Good Time Management

Managing your time is like managing your money:

You have a limited amount — of cash or minutes — so you work to make the most of what you have . 

This probably involves some restriction (of spending or how many extracurriculars you sign up for). Maybe you decide not to play intramural volleyball because you’re already taking tennis class and you need more time to study physics.

Or you might designate certain times for certain tasks, the way a good budget sets aside a portion of each paycheck for expenses like rent. Let’s say, you have an hour break between classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, so each day, you head straight to the library to tackle reading assignments without distractions.

Think of time management as budgeting your time. You know how much time you’re working with (24 – 6-8 hours for sleep each day = 16-18 hours) and how much homework and reading you have to do. All you need to do now is assign tasks to time.

Practice discipline up front, and you’ll reap the benefits of guilt-free time that you can spend however you want — with no anxiety creeping in about that assignment you haven’t started.

10 Tips for Optimal Time Management

Before you look at our tips, make sure you’ve checked off these time management steps:

✔ Go through your syllabus from each class.

✔ Organize your assignments, deadlines, and schedule in one place, like a digital calendar or paper planner.

✔ Use color-coding or another method to distinguish homework assignments from events, classes, and social plans.

Make sure you know exactly what’s on your plate, what’s coming up and how much time you’re working with. Then, use these tips to make the most of your time:

1. Identify your time management style — and shortcomings.

Do you tend to get sucked into one project and, three hours later, realize you’ve finished one thing but have 10 other tasks still staring you down? Or do you take a more squirrel-like approach, jumping from task to task and struggling to check anything off?

Reflect on where you get stuck with time management — and use that information to strategize solutions.

If you get caught up in individual tasks, try setting a timer so you’ll know when to move on. If you’re always multitasking, try focusing on just one task for 20-45 minutes and don’t move on to the next task until after that time period (or you’ve finished the task in question). 

If you have a hard time getting started, play around with the Pomodoro Technique: 

🍅 Set a timer for 25 minutes.

🍅 Work on one task during those 25 minutes.

🍅 When the timer goes off, take a 5-minute break. Then start the cycle over again.

‍ The idea is to understand your tendencies (distraction, hyper-focus without completion, etc.) and then find an approach that combats those shortcomings and promotes productivity.

2. List your priorities. Then refine your list.

Is there a certain class you absolutely must get an A in? One you know will be especially hard?

Are you also juggling work and a serious relationship? Going to school while caring for kids?

Think through your priorities — in school and out of school. Make a list for: the semester, this month, and the current week. Now, organize your to-do list with those priorities in mind.

What is a must-do? What could wait until after the semester ends or after you turn in that big paper?

Making priorities on the semester, month, and week levels will help you keep the big picture in mind , while also handling any surprises that arise. One week, your priority may be to research a paper for a history class. Next, you may aim to get ahead in reading for your global literature class, so later this month, when family is in town, you’ll have extra room in your schedule to spend time with them.

Write out your priorities and keep them somewhere easy to reference. As the semester continues, revisit them and adjust your weekly and monthly priorities as needed.

Use your list of priorities to hone in on what’s important — and stop multitasking. Instead of splitting your attention between five different assignments, focus on one at a time , starting with the top item on your priority list.

  • If you’re struggling in your general education astronomy class, but your accounting class (which counts toward your major) has a big exam this week, studying for your exam should be the bigger priority. 
  • If you’re in the middle of reading tomorrow’s assigned text for your British literature class, but you need to pick your kids up from daycare in ten minutes — put the book down and go get your kids.

The progress may feel slow when you’re only doing one thing at a time, but track your time and the tasks you accomplish, and you’ll see almost immediate improvement to your productivity.

3. Create a visual plan.

Are you more of a visual thinker? Do progress bars and illustrations mean more to you than percentages?

Then scrap the traditional to-do list — at least for bigger assignments. Instead, try a more visual approach:

  • Use a bulletin board and index cards or sticky notes to show where you are in the process of researching, writing, and revising a senior thesis. You can use the same columns for all assignments (for example: Research, First Draft, Second Draft, Final) or create different columns/progress steps for each assignment. Every time you complete a step, move that assignment’s card to the next ste p.

  • Create a Gantt chart to map out the different steps and the time needed for each step. Work backwards from your project’s due date to where you are now, giving yourself enough time to complete each task.

Gantt charts can be especially helpful for collaborative or group projects, where each person has different responsibilities. My junior year, I used a Gantt chart to plan and track progress on a collaborative book project, where I was working with other students to write, design, edit, and print a book over the course of the semester. Gantt charts clearly show how each step is connected to the others, and how one missed deadline has ripple effects on everything else. They also show you, at a glance, exactly how much time you’re working with.

4. Get accountability.

Some people work best alone, but others need study buddies or a group to help them stay on-task. If that’s you, seek out accountability by finding a classmate or group of fellow students to study with. You might be in the same class — or you might all just prefer to camp out in the library with company.

The key here is that your study buddy or group helps you focus and isn’t a distraction. If your BFF is always interrupting your train of thought to gossip, you might need to study with someone else.

If you’re struggling to find anyone to study with, check with your university’s academic resource center. They may organize study groups, know about existing ones — or offer some advice for how you can effectively study on your own.

5. Find out what time of day you focus best — and reserve that time for homework.

Are you an early bird? A night owl? Does your brain fire up in the late afternoon?

Use this information to your advantage and schedule your study sessions for your brain’s peak time. Block it off on your calendar and set a routine.

  • Early risers might get up with the sun and study quietly at breakfast.
  • Midday minds may grab a quick lunch between classes and tuck away in a corner on campus with their laptops and textbooks.
  • Late-night learners might hole away in the library or residence hall lounge and take copious notes while others socialize or snooze.

Guard your prime time from competing activities. Find a place where you won’t be interrupted — and then go the extra mile and remove technological distractions.

6. Silence your phone, turn off notifications, and stay off social media.

One minute on TikTok easily turns into two hours. A quick scroll on Reddit or Instagram and you’ve completely forgotten what you’re supposed to be doing instead.

But you can make technology work for you.

Start by silencing your phone and turning off notifications from whatever social media apps you have. Then, if needed, use a tool like BlockSite or Freedom to keep yourself away from distracting websites during your study hours.

You don’t have to give up social media altogether, but consider your priorities from earlier — is scoring another follower or like on the ‘Gram really where your energy belongs? Or is your priority to ace your next test?

Embracing digital boundaries will help keep your mind focused on the task at hand.

7. Use other tools to improve your time management.

Setting a timer and installing BlockSite or Freedom on your browser is just the beginning of how you can harness tools to keep yourself focused, on task, and working efficiently.

You can also use:

  • Wordtune for shortening your essay writing and editing time.
  • Wordtune Read for speeding up your research process (and completing reading assignments more efficiently).
  • Evernote (or Google Drive ) for collecting all of your notes in one easy-to-reference place.
  • Toggl Track to track your time (the app even has a Pomodoro timer built-in).
  • Todoist for organizing to-do lists — and keeping lists easily accessible across your devices.

8. Turn procrastination into productivity.

You’ve been sitting at your desk for 30 minutes, chewing your eraser and flipping from window to window on your computer. You’ve made zero progress on researching your expository essay, which is due next week and is your top priority for today. It may be time to let those priorities flex.

If you’re not getting anywhere with your main task, choose a different, easier, or more interesting task from your to-do list.  

Avoid things that will take a lot of time and energy. The goal here is to accomplish something in a few minutes, so you can build some momentum that will carry you into your main task. 

And even if that strategy doesn’t work — you do the starter task and go right back to staring at the screen — you’ve at least checked something off your list.

9. Take physical breaks.

Working for three-hour chunks — whether on schoolwork or at a desk job — is not sustainable. Breaks are necessary for long-term productivity. And the best breaks from brain work are physical.

Instead of spending your break scrolling your phone or opening another window on your laptop:

🚶🏼‍♀️ Walk the hall or wander campus. 

🚽 Use the bathroom.

🦘 Do some pushups, jumping jacks, air squats.

🎶 Put on some music and dance for 10 minutes.

Just about anything physical and tactile will give your brain a much-needed break from mental work, and your eyes a break from the screen or text. When you return to your desk, you’ll find you’re refreshed and more able to focus.

10. Log every completed task.

If you still feel like you’re accomplishing nothing, this little trick can show you how much you’re actually doing. Throughout the day, take note of every little task you complete — like a to-do list, except it’s a done list. 

  • If you organize your to-do list, write that down.
  • If you do some initial research for an assignment, log it.
  • If you read 5 of the assigned 20 pages, make a note.

Every little bit of progress is progress, and sometimes, just seeing that we’ve done a little bit can motivate us to do more. 

Pair this with tip #8 (turn procrastination into productivity) to build that task-oriented momentum, and soon enough, you’ll be writing down the fully completed tasks that have been hanging over your head all week.

Finding What Works for You

The best time management hacks vary from person to person. Some people need a detailed calendar where everything is scheduled. Some people need visuals and task lists to keep them on track. 

What works for someone else may not work for you. That’s okay — and expected!

Play around with these tips, run some experiments on yourself, and find out what does and doesn’t work for you. Then stick with what works and share the word. Who knows? You might just become your classmates’ time management guru.

As a college student, you have to learn how to master the art of balancing between personal life and college duties. However, things often get out of hand, especially if you’re struggling with procrastination . Before you know it, the semester begins to slip away. You start realizing that getting your college assignments done before the deadline is pretty much mission impossible. Don’t fall into despair just yet, though! Simple habit corrections and a healthy dose of fresh perspective can help you organize yourself.

Embrace Monotasking

Be it the social media we have to check or an interesting video our friend sent us—the multitasking mode has become a default one in the 21st century.  However, this kind of behavior can decrease one’s productivity for around 40% , according to Harvard Business Review. Instead of overwhelming your brain with information you don’t need, try focusing solely on one assignment and restrain yourself from scrolling down the newsfeed on Facebook.  Wondering how to embrace monotasking? Studies show that we stick to one task for about 18 minutes before we feel the urge to do something else. This behavioral pattern can be changed with commitment and practice, but if you cannot resist taking a break from one task, switch to a different one and pick up where you left off later.

Make a Realistic Time Schedule

Did you know writing tasks down increases your chances of actually getting them done? Make a time schedule for yourself and stick with your studying plan. Having a calendar with a clear overview of the assignments ahead helps you organize your time more effectively. Of course, it is important to be realistic when assessing the time you need for a certain assignment. There is no shame in asking for help or joining some of the study groups in order to survive the exam week and get motivated to make the most of your time. Consult with your professor if you have any dilemmas or drop by the academic support center and ask for additional advice.

Master the Art of Time Management

Eliminate all the possible distractions and make reasonable study breaks. Try the Pomodoro technique: decide which task are you going to work on and set the timer to 25 minutes; after this period of time, you are allowed to take a short break (3-5 minutes). Repeat this four times and you’ll get 1 hour of pure productive work. Afterward, take a larger break of 15-30 minutes and then repeat the whole cycle. It is essential to put a checkmark on paper each time you finish one period of studying (the mentioned 25 minutes) so that you track your progress and plan ahead. The technique has proven to be great for obtaining a nice workflow. You’ll get more things done in less time. If you’re more of a tech-savvy person, you can explore different productivity apps out there.

Know When to Turn a New Page

Don’t waste additional time on homework and assignments that have a very close deadline. By trying to save what cannot be saved, you risk failing with the upcoming tasks. Accept the fact you should have known better and focus on taking a smarter path with your new tasks. Past failures can actually be extremely motivational and as humans learn through empirical experiences, it’s likely you’ll find your unique way to organize yourself better so you don’t feel out of sorts in the future.

By doing everything last minute, you risk burning out because of the sudden massive workload you have to deal with. Don’t disrupt your health just because your organizational skills need to be a bit polished up. It’s easier than you think to get back on track!

Completing your assignments and homework on time is instrumental to your final grades at school, because it shows that you can observe time and respect deadlines, and, as a student, it is important that you are able to complete your tasks on time.

1. Start Immediately

2. Plan Effectively

A good plan will enable you beat the deadline and submit your work on time. When planning how to handle the assignments, start with the most difficult ones or the most urgent ones. However, you need to be realistic about how you plan out your time.

3. Have a Quiet Study Area

Create a study area that is quiet and free from all the distractions.

If social media is likely to distract you, block the sites using blocking applications.

4. Get Help

You and your classmates can help each other complete assignments by working as a group. It helps you handle the tough areas of the assignment and complete it on time. Additionally, you can get help from your tutors on the challenging parts of the assignment.

5. Avoid Multitasking

Because it is easier to do one assignment at a time, it is important to start by planning your work well. Handling more than one assignment will lower your concentration and productivity. You will spend more time on the assignment than you had anticipated.

6. Remember to Take Breaks

Take breaks in between the assignments to reenergize yourself. Working continuously for a long time causes brain fatigue, which lowers your concentration and affects the quality of your work. Reward yourself during these breaks.

The key to completing your assignments early and submitting on time is knowing the importance of the assignment in your studies. Take the assignments seriously, plan well and give them your best. You will not have to worry about missing the submission deadline.

At the last minute you may find yourself scrambling to get your assignment submitted before the clock strikes 12 midnight. Or, a worse scenario might be that you miss the deadline completely, thinking that you had more time. In order to avoid these mishaps and ensure you complete your online assignments on time, you should organize around your hectic schedule. The following strategies are what I used to ensure that all of my assignments were submitted on time.

1. Create A Time Table

At least a week before the official commencement of class, a course outline is usually posted in the course area. This course outline gives the assignments for each week. Get a head start by reviewing the eLearning course outline, a day or two prior, instead of waiting until class begins. Then create a time table; this way you already have a feel of what is expected of you for the entire course.

Pay specific attention to those assignments that are not a part of the discussion assignments. Usually, the weekly discussions are easier to complete than the written assignments. Use a calendar and mark the dates for the assignments for the course, depending on the length of the course. My courses at Walden University were 8 weeks long, which made it was easy for me to write down the courses on a ruled paper and stick it on my working desk where it was always visible.

The goal of writing down the assignments is to have a mental knowledge about how you will be able to fit in with your work schedule. For me working out how I will do my assignments was a little less challenging because we were given a monthly duty-sheet, at work, the majority of the times.

If you are one who does not mind getting your book dirty you can make notes in the books as you go along.

For me, I enjoyed writing ideas alongside the text when it triggered an idea, but I used pencil which can be easily erased if I decide to sell my used books. When I wrote down my ideas, it was easier for me when it was time to do the first draft of my online assignment. Furthermore, if you fail to start your assignment early, the notes will provide a foundation on which to build your points, quickly.

4. Set Time and Goals for Each Study Session

Schedule your study sessions and divide time for all the essential subjects you plan to study in a day. Apart from setting time for each subject, you should also set goals for each study session. For example, set a goal of completing two topics or one chapter of a subject. When the time for one subject is over, move on to the next one as per the plan, even though you might have some portion left to study. You can cover it later. It is good not to give more hours than allotted to a subject even if you do not achieve the set goals.

5. Break your Large Work in Smaller Projects

If you have an intensive workload or a more significant project, it would be better to break it into smaller tasks. Whether studying a subject or writing a paper, break it into smaller slots and allot time to the smaller projects. Finish one job at a time, and all your work will be done without you feeling the burden.

BOSTON — Last Wednesday, Chris Martin went straight from the Injured List to the Red Sox’ active roster. He did not pass “Go,” he did not collect $200 and he did not stop for a minor league rehab assignment.

He simply started pitching again, seemingly impervious to the elbow inflammation that sidelined him in early July. That he has pitched as well as he has makes Martin’s return all the more remarkable. Over three appearances, Martin has tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits — both singles — while striking out six. As ever, he’s been a strike-throwing machine with 72 percent of his pitches landing for strikes and no walks issued.

Rehab? Who needs it?

But even Martin confessed to being surprised that he has been so effective without benefit of even a brief minor league assignment.

“To be honest, yes, I am surprised,” said Martin. “Obviously, this is the first time coming off an IL situation without rehabbing. I feel mechanically, there are things you can do (off the field) with dry work and things like that. It’s just the recovery stuff that was a question mark.”

Asked why he elected to skip a minor league rehab assignment of at least an outing or two, Martin cited the playoff race and the calendar.

“We’re kind of running out of time,” he said. “I felt like the bullpen was getting worked pretty hard. We’re right in there in the playoff hunt, so I just felt like, ‘Might as well get out there and get going competitively.’ Sometimes, a rehab assignment, you don’t have those competitive juices flowing. Hopefully, this was going to be able to speed up the process.”

His return couldn’t have been timed better. The Red Sox are without Justin Slaten, and have optioned two lefty relievers back to Worcester in the last week. The bullpen has been hit hard since the All-Star break and a fresh — and able — arm was more than welcome.

“He’s been good, the stuff has good, the command has been great,” said Alex Cora. “Obviously, we have to b be careful going back-to-back and all that. We talked about (an assignment first), but an outing in Worcester at 100 percent is basically an outing here, because he’s that good. We need him. We have to be careful, especially early. But at one point, he’ll do the back-to-back and he’ll be a full-go.”

Martin’s season has been interrupted three times this year. Earlier in the season, he experienced soreness in his left shoulder, which he managed to pitch through. Next came an IL stint for anxiety , followed by being sidelined by the elbow.

“Now, it feels like he’s close to 100 percent,” said Cora. “We’re going to be able to use him the right way and I think he’s going to be able to contribute.”

Martin was activated last Wednesday, the final game of a six-game road trip. Facing major league hitters for the first time in more than a month, Martin retired the Kansas City Royals in order on 15 pitches, striking out the side.

“Obviously, the results helped mentally,” said Martin. “That was good for the brain.”

On Saturday, he allowed a single in a shutout inning as the Red Sox tried to claw from behind against Houston. And on Monday night, as the Red Sox were locked in a tie game in the late innings against Texas, Martin pitched his customary eighth inning and allowed just one hit while recording two strikeouts.

The bigger challenge, to date, hasn’t come on the mound, but rather, in between outings as he looks to rebuild stamina in his throwing arm and quicken his recovery.

“Overall, my body feels good, so that’s a good sign,” Martin said. “The stuff’s been OK. The velo is down a little bit, but that’s to be expected. I feel like I’m staying in my delivery very well. That’s something we worked on here, doing dry work and stuff like that. I feel like the ball’s coming out pretty good, so once the velo comes back, we’ll be in a real good place.”

Martin likens his current status as similar to how he might feel coming out of spring training — building strength as he builds back arm strength.

Jacob deGrom Could Start Rehab Assignment Next Week, Where Will Texas Rangers Ace Be Pitching?

Jacob deGrom could be on a minor league rehab assignment as soon as next week.

Although it might be too late for the two-time Cy Young winner to lead the Texas Rangers back to the postseason, his return remains of great importance for the team's future.

deGrom threw to batters for the second time before Monday's series opener against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. deGrom threw about 40 pitches to Ezequiel Duran and Travis Jankowski, according to manager Bruce Bochy, who told reporters everything went well.

“I felt really good. The main thing is just now dialing in the off-speed stuff ," deGrom told MLB.com. "My changeup was good, but my slider was a little bit inconsistent. It's going to be about trying not to do too much when a batter steps in. But everything felt good, the location, honestly everything. My first inning, I thought, was really good. Then the second one, I wasn't locating at all, so that's the next step. Just lock everything in and go from there.”

Jankowski wasn't as stingy with his review of deGrom's stuff.

"Nasty. I think he looked like a two-time Cy Young Award winner, one-time ERA leader," Jankowski told MLB.com. "That's why he is where he is, right? Not easy to pick up, ball gets on you really quick, and he's really, really good."

deGrom will face hitters in another live batting practice session on Friday in Arlington when the club is hosting the Minnesota Twins beginning Thursday night at Globe Life Field. The club will then decide where deGrom starts his rehab.

Triple-A Round Rock is on the road at Salt Lake from Aug. 20-25. Double-A Frisco, however, hosts San Antonio from Aug. 20-25. deGrom is likely to make his first rehab start of a couple of innings in Frisco, perhaps on Aug. 22, and make a second rehab start on Aug. 27 or 28 when the Express host Oklahoma City in Round Rock.

deGrom is likely to need four or five rehab starts with increasing pitch counts before being an option for the Rangers roster. If he stays on schedule, that's likely to be in early September.

Tyler Mahle , who had Tommy John surgery two weeks before deGrom in 2023, has been outstanding in his first two starts since returning to the Rangers. He's 0-1 with a 2.79 ERA and nine strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings.

Significant effort has been made by the NCO to foster an in-house learning culture and to generate evidence-based knowledge on key thematic areas in support of effective design and implementation of programme interventions related to gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE) in Nepal. There has been a regular practice of debriefing and sharing of updates from external meetings and workshops and collective reflection on the key issues emerging, based on which NCO makes decisions and takes action. Learning from programme implementation has also been consistently used for the capacity development of programme partners.

UN Women NCO is committed to feminist knowledge building, which is aimed at centering the knowledge, experiences and perspectives of diverse women and excluded groups in equitable, empowering and non-extractive ways. Feminist knowledge building seeks to:

  • Promote the power of key constituencies to shape their own narratives, as opposed to sole reliance on top-down, expert-driven processes for programme design and advocacy.
  • Facilitate a process that is empowering for diverse women and excluded groups by driving change in social norms.
  • Identify alternate and diverse means of generating knowledge from an intersectional lens. This includes action research, equitable storytelling, ethnographic research and other participatory feminist methodologies.
  • Identify diverse mediums, platforms and partners to share knowledge with key constituencies from an inclusive perspective, providing, for example, oral formats for people with disabilities who might not have access to digital media.
  • Identify ways to harness feminist knowledge in both the short and medium terms.

UN Women in partnership with FAO, WFP and IFAD and under the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD) is currently implementing the second phase of the five-year Joint Programme on: “Accelerating Progress towards Rural Women’s Economic Empowerment (JP RWEE)” in Siraha and Saptari districts. Started from 2022, the programme aims to secure the livelihoods, rights and resilience of rural women in the context of sustainable development and Agenda 2030 and focuses on four key outcomes for rural women: (1) improved food security and nutrition; (2) increased incomes to sustain livelihoods and build resilience; (3) increased voice and agency for full leadership and participation in rural communities and governance structures, and (4) more gender-responsive policy environment for the economic empowerment of rural women. This joint programme in Nepal is part of the global JP RWEE initiative, currently being implemented in six countries worldwide with funding support from the Multi Partner Trust Fund. The implementation of the programme in Nepal is led by UN Women and overseen by a national level Programme Steering Committee led by the MoALD, consisting of senior representatives of the four participating agencies and government representatives. Implementation of the programme is monitored and supported by a Technical Working Group, consisting of technical focal points of each of the four agencies. A Programme Management Unit, situated within the lead agency, consisting of a National Coordinator and a MEAL Coordinator oversees the management and implementation of the programme and its M&E system in close collaboration with participating UN agencies (PUNOs).

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of Monitoring and Reporting Analyst, MEAL Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of the M&E system across the JP RWEE in Nepal. For this, she/he/they will work in close collaboration with the Global MEAL Coordinator, National Coordinator and technical focal points and M&E focal points of the four PUNOs. Additionally, they will contribute to enhancement of the UN Women NCO’s overall M&E system and practices. She/he/they will also 

participate in and contribute to the regional and global level forums/platforms in promoting cross learning.

Specific responsibilities include the following:

Programme Implementation

  • Oversee the implementation of the M&E plan of JP RWEE and ensure the implementation of timely and quality MEAL activities, providing technical guidance, ensuring programme quality and enabling timely and accurate reporting on indicators.
  • Oversee and quality assure the implementation of the key surveys/studies/evaluations for JP RWEE including mid-term review, end-line survey and final evaluation while facilitating the disseminations.
  • Develop relevant guidelines and tools for effective monitoring and reporting in close collaboration with Global MEAL Coordinator and technical guidance of the National Coordinator.
  • Review and consolidate the M&E plan on an annual basis as part of the annual work plan submission and ensure M&E activities are adequately budgeted for.
  • Identify any challenges in the implementation M&E system/plan and take mitigation actions in consultation with National Coordinator and Global MEAL Coordinator.
  • Co-lead monitoring exercises including joint monitoring visit to programme locations and participate in other monitoring exercises led by PUNOs and partner organizations.
  • Support in monitoring synergies, integrated approaches and partnerships within the JP RWEE.
  • Co-lead with National Coordinator on the periodic review exercises for JP RWEE to discuss progress, challenges and opportunities.
  • Manage evaluation processes (mid-term and final evaluations) and any other assessments.

Technical Support

  • Provide technical assistance with project related quality data collection, analysis and use, including related cross cutting issues such as climate change and disaster risk reduction.
  • Provide feedback to field monitoring reports and ensure that action plans are included and followed up.
  • Provide technical inputs to strategic planning processes including UN Women’s Strategic Note/Annual Work Plan as well as UNSDCF.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to programme partners particularly on M&E activities.
  • Facilitate the periodic reporting exercise of JP RWEE in close collaboration with the National Coordinator and Global MEAL Coordinator.
  • Contribute to the review of the JP RWEE narrative donor reports and ensure strong programme analysis based on indicator progress.
  • Provide any other internal reports and updates as required.
  • Contribute to country level reporting exercises of UN Women.
  • With the National Coordinator, lead on developing a culture of learning across the programme, ensuring that learning is consistently used to drive improvements in programme implementation.
  • Support with the analysis of monitoring data and provide recommendations for programme adaptation as necessary.
  • Provide technical assistance on the development and implementation of knowledge management and learning plans including documentation of good practices, ensuring that evidence-based learning is captured and used.

Capacity Building

  • Identify capacity gaps and provide trainings for programme partners on results-based monitoring and reporting (e.g. data collection methods, data analysis, data quality assurance and result-based management).

Accountability

  • Ensure effective implementation of the Community Feedback Mechanism (CFM) for JP RWEE in close collaboration with CFM Manager and key findings/lessons learned are used for adjustments/improvements in the programme.
  • Monitor effective functioning of the CFM at the community level and provide recommendations for improvement as needed.
  • Perform any other relevant task assigned by the immediate supervisor.

  • Effective implementation of the M&E plan for JP RWEE.
  • Timely and quality substantive inputs to JP RWEE annual work plans.
  • Timely monitoring and tracking of programme results, particularly progress against the results indicators.

Until recently, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was a virtual unknown outside of the Midwest, even among Democrats. But his stock rose fast in the days after President Biden withdrew from the race, clearing a path for Ms. Harris to replace him and pick Mr. Walz as her No. 2.

Here’s a closer look at the Democrats’ new choice for vice president.

1. He is a (very recent) social media darling . Mr. Walz has enjoyed a groundswell of support online from users commenting on his Midwestern “dad vibes” and appealing ordinariness.

2. He started the whole “weird” thing. It was Mr. Walz who labeled former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, “weird” on cable television just a couple of weeks ago. The description soon became a Democratic talking point.

3. He named a highway after Prince and signed the bill in purple ink. “I think we can lay to rest that this is the coolest bill signing we’ll ever do,” he said as he put his name on legislation declaring a stretch of Highway 5 the “Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway” after the musician who had lived in Minnesota.

4. He reminds you of your high school history teacher for a reason. Mr. Walz taught high school social studies and geography — first in Alliance, Neb., and then in Mankato, Minn. — before entering politics.

5. He taught in China in 1989 and speaks some Mandarin. He went to China for a year after graduating from college and taught English there through a program affiliated with Harvard University.
