Ready, Set, Dance: An argument on dance as a sport.

' src=

A sport is defined as “an activity involving physical exertion and skill which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment,” according to Oxford Languages. Why then, is dance not considered a sport?

Despite the competitive nature of dance and the intense hours of training, dancers still continue to fight for other athletes to take them seriously. Dance may not involve the equipment or team that other sports do, but it requires just as much physical strength, skill and practice.

According to Pointe Magazine, students who wish to become professional dancers train anywhere from 15 to 30 hours a week. Many dancers are even homeschooled in order to prioritize their training. Young girls and boys who hope to join companies give up their lives to the art. Just as many other athletes, the lifespan of a professional dancer is short. Students must dedicate themselves fully to the art at a young age in order to make it in the professional world.

Dancers must also follow a strict exercise and nutrition routine in order to maintain their strength and figure. WorldWide Ballet states that the average American ballerina is anywhere from 5 foot 2 inches to 5 foot 8 inches and weighs 85 to 130 lbs. Despite a society of body positivity and acceptance, ballerinas are still forced into the standard of being thin. Professional dancers have to track their food and weight meticulously in order to maintain their physique.

There are many arguments against dance as a sport, but I’ve never understood why. Maybe one doesn’t understand the rigors of the art until they’ve tore a ligament from a misplacement of weight, or they’ve bandaged their bloody, broken feet. Maybe one will never understand until they’ve pushed themselves on stage to the point of tears but have kept a smile on their face.

I’ve been dancing since I was three years old. In high school, I would have practice with my dance team from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and then would immediately drive to my dance studio for class from 6-10 p.m. I have torn ligaments in both my hip and my knee but performed the next day anyways. I pushed myself physically and mentally for years, leaving by body stiff and sore permanently.

Dance is like any other sport. Some are cut out, and some are not. A dancer must have as much physical strength and dedication as any other athlete, but a dancer performs with grace and beauty. Dance may not look like a sport to the common eye, but if you saw what occurred in front of those floor length mirrors, I’m sure you would change your mind.

Why Do We Care So Much Whether Dance Is A Sport?

is dance a sport persuasive essay

Is dance a sport? A Google search of that question will yield hundreds of results of impassioned arguments about whether or not we should consider dance a sport. The fact that breaking was recently provisionally added to the 2024 Summer Olympics program is certain to make the conversation even more heated.

I would like to make a counterargument: Those on both sides of the issue seem to agree more than they disagree. So who cares?

is dance a sport persuasive essay

It’s not that either side doesn’t have a valid case to make: They do.

For example, those arguing that dance is a sport are right that dancers are put to physical tests as great or greater as any top sports players. Also that dance is competitive (whether we’re talking about dance competitions or just trying to get jobs) and that dancers have relatively short careers and often deal with major injuries.

And those who argue that dance is not a sport are right that dance is so much more than just physical training and executing movements correctly. Great dancers aren’t just athletes, they are artists. And though both sports and dance could be classified as entertainment, professional athletes aim to win, while dancers aim for many different things: to tell stories, to open minds, to disrupt and to inspire.

is dance a sport persuasive essay

Ultimately, though they make the point in two different ways, both sides seem to be advocating for the same idea: That dance should be valued and appreciated for everything that it is.

But by insisting that sports be the measuring stick by which we judge our beloved art form, the framework of this argument doesn’t do anything to meaningfully advocate for dance—in fact it does the opposite.

My problem is not with sports. In fact, I like sports! (My obsession with the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team is well-documented .) I just think that when we obsess over how dance is similar to or different from sports, it speaks to the way our culture values sports so much more highly than the arts . (This likely needs little explanation, but think: public school arts programs cut while sports programs remain untouchable; principal dancers making a pittance compared to what most professional athletes make.)

We shouldn’t have to legitimize the athleticism of dance by comparing it to sports. But since we unfortunately do need to keep reminding the world that dance is incredibly physically difficult (and if you think this is also tied up in the ways in which dance is undervalued, you’re not wrong), let’s make the argument about dance on its own terms, by highlighting the incredible real-world feats of strength dancers perform, or the intense cross-training dancers do or the injuries they recover from .

Otherwise we’re just reinforcing the idea that sports are the highest form of athleticism that all other physical pursuits must live up to.

Far more interesting arguments about dance await; let’s start having those instead.

✍️ How to Start a Sports Persuasive Essay?

You may be familiar with the term “hook” concerning the essay writing. If not, well, it’s a catchy sentence or two at the beginning of the paper. It’s supposed to intrigue the reader and grab their attention so that they follow your train of thought.

The writer places a hook before the thesis statement of their paper. This way, the reader will be more focused on the core message.

Let’s be real:

Not everyone is interested in sports. Or not in the particular game that you center your paper around. So, in the persuasive essay on sports, a catchy hook is essential. You need an attention grabber to make anyone engaged. Plus, it helps to get a clear understanding of your thesis later. You can check out some college essay examples to better understand what we’re talking about.

Starting an essay with a hook ensures that your audience will want to keep reading.

So, how can you intrigue from the start?

There are several popular hooks for sports-related essays:

  • Quotations . A quotation is an engaging way to introduce your reader to the topic. Make sure the quote is relevant to the rest of the essay. “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” – Michael Jordan
  • Fun Facts . Use some fun or unexpected info about sports to surprise a reader. It can be a great attention-grabber, especially if a reader is not knowledgeable on the subject. A record 202 countries participated in the 2004 Olympic Summer Games in Athens.
  • Personal Experience. Using personal experience in a hook is smart in several ways. First, it gives the reader a sense of the author’s presence. Second, it provides information in an engaging, conversational style. I couldn’t stand the idea of working out when I was younger.
  • Anecdotes . Similar to personal experience, anecdotes are entertaining stories. They can be based on a real narrative or be entirely made-up. Your task is to make them humorous. Do you know Jim Thorpe’s response when he received the gold medal for the Decathlon? When the King of Sweden said that Thorpe was the greatest athlete in the world, he said, “Thanks, King.”
  • Rhetorical Questions . Rhetorical questions don’t require an answer. They either state the obvious or encourage one’s thinking. Use them in a hook to immerse the reader into the subject. If LeBron James ends up taking the Cleveland Cavaliers to the playoffs now, and Carmelo Anthony can’t take the Denver Nuggets to the playoffs, what do you think that does to the Rookie of the Year voting?
  • Useful Definition . Starting the first paragraph with a definition sets the tone for your essay. It is an informative, specific lead to your topic. Deck work is the mood-setting moves performed on the deck once the music starts before the swimmers enter the water.
  • Controversial statement . There are usually two sides to any controversy. Your reader will either agree or disagree with a given statement but will stay invested. The U.S. men’s soccer team won’t win a World Cup in the foreseeable future.

Make sure not to make baseless assumptions and statements.

📝 Writing a Persuasive Essay about Sports

Now that you’ve seen the topics let’s talk about writing. Persuasive essays differ from the other academic papers in both the goal and structure. You have to keep in mind that you’re composing not for yourself but for the reader. That’s why you have to present your arguments logically and coherently.

You should outline the persuasive essay before writing.

Here are some tips on writing a killer persuasive essay about sports:

  • Choose a topic that you can handle. Don’t try to compose a paper on the game that you know nothing about. It’s too tiring and time-consuming. Remember that it takes months for a fan to learn everything about their favorite sport. If you don’t have such years-long passion, focus on the more straightforward aspects of your topic.
  • Research beforehand . Even if you’re a sports fan, and especially if you’re not. There are plenty of rules and scandals that you need to consider to sound convincing. Look up some fun facts or entertaining stories. Sports topics usually give you plenty of material to play around with.
  • Take notes. The more notes you take while researching, the less work you’ll have to do after. And you won’t have to reread the materials to find that one sports event that you’ve forgotten about. The industry is quite vibrant with exceptional cases. Make sure you keep track of all the information that might be useful.
  • Pick the issues to discuss according to the evidence . If you can’t support an argument with enough credible proof, don’t include it in your essay. Both argumentative and persuasive essays require you to stay on top of your argumentation.
  • Outline and draft your paper before writing the final version. When you’re writing on recent events, you may get new information at any moment. So, draft before composing. In case you decide to include some new evidence or improve an argument, it won’t be messy. Outlining will help to organize your thoughts comprehensively and concisely.

Read the sports news before writing the final version of the essay.

Leaping into new respect: why dance should be considered a sport.

Sophie Latessa , News Editor | February 6, 2022

Sophie Latessa “leaping into respect.”

At every family gathering, a distant relative will ask me “So, what’s your sport?” “I’m a competitive dancer,” I answer. They proceed to give me a look which indicates they don’t think that counts as a sport at all. “How nice,” they’ll say.

Dance has long been thought of as an art and not a sport, however it is in fact a sport and people continue to overlook how challenging it is. According to dictionary.com , the definition of a sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” Dance meets all of this criteria. Dancers are often disregarded as athletes even though their craft is arguably harder to develop and more physically demanding than other sports.

While dance obviously doesn’t entail frequent games as many other sports do, dancers compete at competitions against other individuals or studios, similar to gymnastics competitions. Dance also doesn’t have a specific season; dancers are year-round athletes and professional dancers go to competitions on a regular basis.

Dancers work extremely long hours to perfect their skills. Personally, I dance about 15 hours in an average week, and professional dancers spend up to six full days a week training. In most professional ballet companies, rehearsal could start at 10 a.m. and go until 6 p.m., with breaks, according to channel4.com .

And although it is a dancer’s job to make everything look effortless, dance is physically grueling. Because of the high stress dancers put on their bodies, most professional dancers retire around their mid-30s, according to dancefacts.net.

Dancers also struggle with many injuries. In a survey about injuries in modern/contemporary dance, it was found that 82 percent of dancers who completed the questionnaire had between one and seven injuries in their career, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Dance is clearly challenging and requires an equal if not greater amount of athleticism to other sports, however it is often not considered a sport because it is not included in the NCAA and rarely included in high school sports.

Part of this is an issue with female representation in sports, as 67.1 percent of dancers are women, according to zippia.com. Although many women compete in high school and college level sports, dance is female-dominated and would introduce a whole new group of female athletes to these higher levels of competition.

The history of the sport has long been overlooked. Skilled high school and college dancers deserve the chance to be recognized as what they are, athletes, in the NCAA and on the high school sports level.

People debate whether dance is a sport or an art, but why can’t it be both?

Yes! I have been dancing since for 10 years. Since I was two. It is a lot of hard work and should definitely be considered as a sport.

fdc • Oct 1, 2023 at 6:00 pm

fr i say the same thing. ipl.org states that “it is a performance, instead of a game, that is scored, it is not always competitive, and it mostly involves emotion, passion, and artistry”

like they don’t even realize that we are being scored when we are judged in competitions. IT IS COMPETITIVE.

also why are figure skating and gymnastics sports? they have plenty of art in them. you use emotion and passion in them too. JUST LIKE DANCE.

thx 4 making this sophie ♡ we miss u at dance. hope ur liking college
