Here are a few valuable tips on how to write an essay about a dog:

  • A good essay on dogs can involve a proper balance of factual information and personal thoughts about the subject.
  • Short essays can cover the physical characteristics of dogs, such as their breeds, lifespan, and relevance to human societies.

This will leave the reader feeling appreciative and affectionate toward these beautiful creatures. If you have a dog as a pet, your personal experience can provide unique insights for your essay and make it more relatable to readers.

Characteristics Of Dogs

Here are some characteristics of dogs that are useful for writing essays. We will cover the physical and behavioural attributes of dogs in this section:

Dogs are descendants of wolves that were domesticated by early hunter-gatherer tribes. They are four-legged mammals that give birth to several puppies at a time. Hundreds of dog breeds have different qualities and are adapted to other environments. Dogs are intelligent, have an excellent sense of smell, and are omnivorous animals that can thrive in the wild or among humans. Dogs are clever enough to be trained to obey simple commands or even perform complicated tasks, such as caring for people with disabilities. Dogs are highly loyal to their owners, and some breeds are known to defend their owners ferociously from all kinds of threats.

Dogs are beneficial to humans in many different ways. Here are a few:

  • Dogs have plenty of psychological benefits as pets. Spending time with dogs reduces stress and anxiety in most people. Dogs are also very playful, which helps improve people’s moods.
  • Service dogs are trained to help people who are disabled. They are trained to assist in many ways, including recognising medical emergencies.
  • Dogs have always acted as guard animals that protect people and property from harm.
  • Dogs are often used as hunting partners by people who live in forests.

There are hundreds of dog breeds worldwide. Below is a list of some popular ones:

  • Golden Retrievers: A favourite of most people, golden retrievers are friendly dogs who are always happy and playful. They are great watchdogs and adorable pets.
  • Labrador Retrievers: These dogs have an even temper, making them good watchdogs. Labradors are also highly intelligent and can be trained as service dogs.

  • Dogs have been alongside humankind for 40,000 years. Their unmatched loyalty earns them the title “Man’s best friend”.
  • Dogs bark loudly to ward off danger and to communicate.
  • There are hundreds of breeds of dogs around the world.

A single-paragraph essay is a good practice exercise before attempting longer essays. Here is an example of a dog paragraph for classes 1, 2 and 3:

Dogs are very faithful pet animals that have been our companions for ages. They are descendants of wolves but have adapted to people over time. Dogs are fast on their feet, and several breeds are aggressive hunting dogs. Their sense of hearing and smell is incredible. Traditionally, dogs were domesticated to hunt and guard animals. In the modern-day, they are popular as pets and service animals. There are hundreds of different breeds of dogs around the world that are bred for specific qualities. Dogs, on average, have a lifespan of 10-15 years and are often the first choice for pet animals.

Writing short essays lays down the skills required for composing long essays. Below is an example of a short essay on a dog:

Dogs, these domesticated mammals, are not just pets, but intelligent beings that have been by our side for more than 40,000 years. Their intelligence is remarkable, and they can be trained to perform specific tasks or behave in a socially acceptable manner. People breed dogs for different purposes. Some are used for hunting; some are guard dogs, while most breeds are meant to be pets. Dogs are highly loyal animals that bond with their owners.

Dogs are highly adaptable creatures. Many working breeds, such as Huskies and German shepherds, are also kept as pets in homes where they become loving family members. Their loyalty and allegiance to humans have earned them the title “man’s best friend.”

A long descriptive essay about a dog is frequently asked for as an assignment. Here is an example of the dog essay for class 3:

The dog is a well-known animal that is popular as a pet worldwide. They come in various breeds with different qualities, physical characteristics, and colours. They are four-legged mammals that are descendants of wolves in the wild. When early man domesticated wolves for hunting, they adapted to human groups and evolved alongside to become close to people. They are very good at sensing human emotions such as love, hostility and fear and respond to people accordingly.

In general, dogs have an outstanding sense of smell. Breeds such as bloodhounds are explicitly employed for hunting and tracking animals and people. They also have excellent hearing power and can hear sound frequencies from 67 Hz to 45,000 Hz. What makes dogs so valuable is that they can be trained to perform various tasks. Service dogs can assist blind people daily, while emotional support dogs are excellent at comforting people who are feeling anxious. As part of K9 units, Sniffer dogs are also used in search and rescue and detecting faint scents that machines cannot.

Despite all the beautiful ways dogs help people, they have a short lifespan of only about 10-15 years. While they have value in terms of service, most dogs are cherished as loving family members worldwide.

Dogs have long been cherished companions, and their fascinating traits never fail to captivate us. Explore some of the most intriguing facts about these beloved animals and uncover what makes them so remarkable.

Informative Essay About Dogs

Photo from Depositphotos

A dog can cure their owners of apathy, anxiety, and bring a lot of joy in their life. There is no doubt that dogs and their owners can even start looking like each other. You can read about it in any scholarly research such as the next pet animal dog essay. There is nothing miraculous here, because when we spend a lot of time with a beloved one, we became a bit similar. More and more people like to adopt a dog from an animal shelter. This step shows the kindness of the owner and the responsibility of having a pet. Meanwhile, people often bring expensive purebred dogs to shelters or even throw them out.

Students often want to raise this problem to scholarly research; as such, you can read informative essays about dogs here. In this essay, the author wants to show the advantages of dog adoption over buying a new one.

At the WritingCheap service, you can find not only essay on dog ownership but many other samples we kindly present on our blog page.

Why Should People Adopt Dogs and Not Buy? Bringing a dog into your family can be a very exciting event. Planning out the food, toys, and treats to buy with your new companion brings more anticipation for bringing home your new pet. Where do you find your new friend, though? Should you purchase a puppy from the pet store in the mall, or should you find an animal shelter to adopt from regardless of the animal’s age? While the puppies in the windows of the mall shop have cuteness appeal, adopting a dog from a shelter is actually the better option. By adopting a dog from a shelter, you are not supporting puppy mill businesses, and you are possibly giving an older dog a second chance. A puppy mill is an organization for the mass breeding of puppies to be sold in stores. These organizations are unhealthy for puppies and their mothers. According to American Humane, these operations are unregulated so there is no guarantee the mothers and their puppies are having their basic needs being met (“Puppy Mills and Mass Breeding,” 2016). Along with their basic needs, these dogs are not being socialized or getting veterinary care. When adopting a dog from a humane society, you are preventing puppy mills from profiting. By not giving any profits to puppy mill companies, such as the stores in shopping malls, the mills are not getting anymore money to put towards staying open. Also, when you adopt a dog from an animal shelter, you can be assured your new pet has had its medical needs met, which can mean they are spayed or neutered and up to date on their shots (“Top Reasons to Adopt a Pet”). Another reason adopting from a shelter is better than buying from a store that supports puppy mills is that you may be giving an older dog a second chance. It is easy to understand how puppy stores are so profitable. People want to adopt a puppy because it is an adorable new life. When adopting from a shelter, though, puppies are not always an option. Instead, many of the dogs available are already adults. These dogs have been placed in shelters for various reasons, whether their previous family could not afford to care for them anymore or they were simply found roaming the streets. Shelters are frequently overwhelmed with the amount of animals they bring in, which means many of the animals coming in could be euthanized if they are left unadopted. The Humane Society has noted that by adopting an animal from their shelters, you are preventing that animal from being euthanized, and you are also freeing up space for another animal to be brought in (“Top Reasons to Adopt a Pet”). Puppy stores are largely popular because they are in populated areas such as malls and provide adorable puppies, provoking people to buy them. Adopting from animal shelters is a better option, though, because it prevents stores supported by puppy mills from profiting on their unethical practice, and it gives an older dog a second chance for a happy home. If people stop shopping at puppy stores completely and switch to solely adopting from shelters, puppy mills will have no choice but to stop breeding and shut down. This will also be beneficial for shelters: with more people adopting dogs, the shelters will have more space for incoming animals and less animals will have to be euthanized. I have a pet dog and his name is Chandler. He is named after my favourite “ Friends ” character and has been with us for the last nine months. His colour is golden and his tail is bushy as he is a golden retriever. Chandler is very energetic and likes to play a lot with all of us. He runs extremely fast when chasing cats. He is very playful. We take good care of his diet. I give him foods like eggs, meat, fish, bread, rice, etc. Whenever I return from school, he wags his tail in joy and jumps and hops all around me as if celebrating. Chandler knows everybody in our family and whenever he sees a new person, he barks at them, but he is sweet and does not bite anyone. He is very intelligent as well and gives us handshakes with his paws. He understands whatever we tell, and on command, he sits and rolls over too. Essay on My Pet in 250 words

My pet dog is a Golden Retriever and his name is Cheddar. He is named after a dog seen on the famous sitcom “Brooklyn 99”. Cheddar is a very energetic and playful dog. He likes to go on walks a lot and play with frisbees and balls. My dad brought him home a year ago. Although I somewhat wanted a cat, now I love him the most. Bella, my sister is crazy about dogs, she wanted a dog since time immemorial. At first, our mother was sceptical about getting a pet, but now Cheddar is her favourite. She treats him just like the way she treats us.

My sister is particular about his timely vaccinations, eating habits, cleanliness, etc. She bathes him twice a week and every evening, we take him out for a stroll in the neighbourhood as well as the park. As mentioned before, Cheddar is quite active. Hence, we play with him in the park a lot. We throw a ball or a frisbee and play a game of fetch with him. He likes to roll in the leaves and it is fun to watch him do so. Along with being active, Cheddar is smart as well. At home, when his food is served, as long as we don’t say the word “go” he patiently waits. On command, he jumps and shakes hands with us using his paw. When told, he can roll over too. He amuses us with his daily fetching of random things like slippers, or one of his toys. We love him with all our heart and he has become an essential member of our family.

My pet’s name is Mario. He is a two-year-old German Shepherd. I was in 6th grade when my father brought Mario home when he was just 45 days old. His cute little face was so fluffy I could just hug and kiss him all day. I bought a soccer ball, with which he and I used to play all day long. Being in school, I used to think about what is he doing right now or today I’ll take him for a walk to the park, where we will play soccer, etc.

His unconditional love has always been there as a stress reliever. His loyalty, unwavering support and companionship have been with me in my good and bad times. Now that he is an adult, I have taken all his responsibilities like feeding him, bathing him, taking him for walks, etc.

Mario once fell ill due to a cold, and whatever he was eating, he was not able to digest it. I got s worried that I took him to the vet, where he was given a penicillin shot as an antibiotic treatment. I was so scared that I held him with my hands and he was lying there, unconscious. Two hours later, he gained his consciousness and started licking my face. All my sorrow and sadness vanished away in a second, seeing his beautiful eyes and fluffy tail wavering all over the table.

Now that he is completely healthy, I take him for his walks every day, where he is always filled with excitement to explore the other world. As a loyal friend, my dog, Mario, has never demanded anything except for 3 times of meals and a walk. Whether it’s a game of fetch in the backyard or a stroll in the park, every shared moment is a treasure that adds richness to my life.

Both cats and dogs make wonderful pets, each offering unique qualities that appeal to different people. Cats are generally more independent animals. Dogs are social animals that thrive on companionship. They usually need more attention, exercise, and social interaction.

Dogs are known as the best friends of humans because they bring loyalty, joyous moments, unconditional love and life-teaching lessons. Some of the best dog breeds for domestication are German Shepherd, Siberian Huskey, Golden Retriever, Labrador, Beagle and Boxer.

500 Word Essay on My Pet Dog

From the moment I first laid eyes on that bundle of golden fur, I knew we were meant to be best friends for life. Cody, my golden retriever, has been an unconditional source of love, loyalty, and laughter for over a decade now. He is truly one of the greatest companions I could ever ask for. Cody came into my life as an 8-week-old puppy, with the most adorable teddy bear face and warm, curious eyes that could melt your heart. But don’t let that sweet look fool you – he was a rambunctious ball of energy from day one. My family and I spent months patiently potty training him, teaching him obedience commands, and redirecting his friendly puppy nipping. It was challenging but rewarding work.

As Cody grew into an adult dog, his true golden retriever personality blossomed. He is the gentlest, most affectionate creature, always eager to shower us with wet kisses and snuggle up for belly rubs at a moment’s notice. With his eternally wagging tail and bright, inviting expression, Cody makes an immediate connection with anyone he meets. One of the things I love most about golden retrievers is their eager-to-please demeanor and high intelligence. Cody lives to make his human family happy. He studies our faces and actions intently, following commands and picking up on our routines with ease. We’ve been able to train him to do all sorts of tricks and tasks – from fetching objects to cleaning up his toys to even pulling off the perfect “play dead.”

At the same time, Cody has a wonderful goofy, playful side that keeps us laughing every day. He gets intense and bouncy when he wants to play tug-of-war or fetch. He makes us chuckle by tilting his head inquisitively at new noises. And sometimes he just does silly things like drooling while he sleeps or getting the classic “zoomies” for no reason. Having a dog like Cody has been an amazing source of joy but also an incredible lesson in unconditional love, patience, responsibility, and living for each moment. Dogs don’t dwell on the past or future – they are fully present. Cody takes the good and bad of each day in stride. Even if I’m frustrated after a long workday, Cody is always ecstatic to greet me with a wagging tail when I walk through the door, his only care being that I’m home.

Cody’s deep loyalty and steadfast companionship has helped me through some tough times in life. He has an incredible intuition for emotions and always seems to know when I need an extra cuddle or kiss on a difficult day. No matter what, I know Cody’s unconditional love for me will never waver. That’s something special that every dog owner understands about the beautiful human-animal bond. After over a decade together, Cody is now an elderly dog with graying fur. But his warm, loving spirit and puppy-like zest for life remain as strong as ever. He reminds me daily to embrace each new experience with that same innocence, loyalty and joy. Cody is more than just a pet – he is a true friend for life. I feel so blessed to be able to share my life with such an amazing, loving animal.

800 Word Essay on My Pet Dog

I was walking home from class, huddled against the crisp wind, when I noticed a scruffy little dog sitting all alone under a streetlamp. His big brown eyes were wide with caution yet brimming with hope as our gazes locked. In that moment, I knew he needed me as much as I needed him. I cautiously approached, offering a few soothing words and holding out a hand to sniff. Rather than cowering or running away as I expected, the pup seemed to appraise me with wisdom beyond his years. After a moment’s pause, he tentatively nudged my hand with his cold, wet nose. My heart melted as I scooped him up into my jacket, feeling his warmth pressed against me. So began my journey with Tommy, the most remarkable indie pup I’ve ever known.

From the start, Tommy proved to be incredibly smart, obedient, and adaptable despite his life on the streets. Within a couple weeks, he had adjusted seamlessly to living indoors, grasping potty training and basic commands. But he was much more than an ordinary pup. Tommy always seemed to sense my shifting emotions, responding with the perfect mixture of playfulness, affection, and calm presence as each situation required.

His emotional intelligence allowed us to form a profound, unbreakable bond. Tommy became my shadow, greeting me with excited tail-wags and sloppy kisses whenever I walked through the door after class or work. He loved to snuggle up on my lap as I studied, seemingly content to just soak up my company and affection. During stressful periods, Tommy’s warm, grounding presence and deep brown eyes could instantly subdue my anxiety and remind me of what really mattered most. Despite being on his own at such a young age, Tommy never developed behavioral issues like excessive barking, aggression, or separation anxiety that many strays struggle with. Instead, he showered everyone he met with endless puppy energy and enthusiasm, his whole body seeming to vibrate with wriggling excitement when offered a pat or a treat. Even kids, strangers, and other pets were instantly accepted as friends in Tommy’s eyes.

As an indie mix, Tommy’s exact breed makeup was anyone’s guess. His scruffy tan and white coat gave him a coyote-like appearance. His tall, pointed ears and muscular build hinted at some terrier ancestry. But most striking were his wildly mismatched eyes – one a warm brown, the other an icy blue-gray. Whatever his origins, Tommy was simply one-of-a-kind. He loved to chase squirrels and birds into the brush, requiring me to wrestle him out of dense bushes or scale trees to retrieve my muddy, leaf-covered pup. He also had a bad habit of counter-surfing to swipe any tempting human food left unattended. More than once, I returned home to find him proudly licking his chops surrounded by a mess of scattered wrappers and crumbs.

But his best trick was his fearless composure around larger animals. Despite his small stature, Tommy never hesitated to strike up play with bigger dogs at the park or boldly approach horses. He seemed to lack any sense of self-preservation or awareness of his diminutive size. I’ll never forget the image of Tommy emphatically barking up at an enormous, bewildered draft horse while I chased him in mortified embarrassment.

As the years passed, Tommy transformed from a pup into a more dignified, albeit slightly mischievous adult dog. His protectiveness over me became more pronounced as his youthful enthusiasm mellowed slightly with age. Tommy appointed himself as a watchdog of sorts, keeping a keen eye on anyone who came by the house. Yet he never lost his loving, gentle demeanor with people and furry friends. Now Tommy has been by my side for nearly a decade, his face graying around the muzzle. With each passing year, I’m reminded how lucky I was to cross paths with this spunky, loving canine on that fateful autumn night. Tommy filled a void in my life that I never knew needed filling until he arrived.

From his endless affection and patience to his silly antics and misbehavior, Tommy has brought me more laughter, companionship, and joy than I ever could have imagined. Gazing into those mismatched but warm, trusting eyes, I know our paths were truly destined to cross that night under the streetlamp. Tommy will forever be one of the greatest gifts the universe has blessed me with – my furry little soul mate in a scruffy tan and white coat.

How much exercise does a pet dog need?

Dogs require daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. The amount of exercise needed varies depending on the breed, age, and size of the dog. Generally, dogs should have at least 30 minutes to an hour of physical activity each day, which can include walks, playtime, and mental stimulation.

What should I feed my pet dog?

A balanced diet is essential for your dog’s health. High-quality commercial dog food that is appropriate for your dog’s age, size, and activity level is usually recommended. You can also include fresh fruits and vegetables as treats or supplements, but be cautious about feeding them human foods that may be harmful to dogs.

How do I house train my pet dog?

Consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement are key to house training your dog. Establish a routine for feeding, potty breaks, and crate training. Supervise your dog closely indoors and take them outside frequently, especially after meals and naps. Reward your dog with praise and treats when they eliminate outdoors.

How can I prevent behavioral problems in my pet dog?

Proper socialization, training, and providing mental and physical stimulation can help prevent behavioral issues in dogs. Enroll your dog in obedience classes, provide plenty of toys and activities to keep them engaged, and ensure they receive enough exercise and attention.

What’s the best way to introduce a new pet dog to my home?

Slow and supervised introductions are key when bringing a new dog into your home, especially if you already have other pets. Allow them to sniff and interact with each other in a controlled environment, and provide separate spaces for each pet initially. Be patient and give them time to adjust to each other’s presence.

Long And Short Essay on My Pet Animal for Kids and Students in English

Given below is an extended essay composed of 500 words and a short essay comprising 100-150 words, in English.

Long Essay on My Pet Animal in English 500 words

Pets are not merely animals living with us. They become a part of our family because of the sheer comfort we get from them. I have always wanted a pet and last summer my mother bought me a puppy. He was the most adorable and beautiful puppy I had ever seen, and taking care of him became my responsibility. It was a suitable breed and had soft paws, which was a sign of expensive breeding. We decided to name our new golden retriever, Comet.

Comet had golden fur and long ears. His eyes were always joyful, and he was a bundle of joy. His golden coat shone in the sunlight as he ran about in our lawn. He loved eating roasted chicken and his dog food. At night, he would cuddle up in my bed, next to me, and go to sleep.

My father had created a small sleeping area for Comet, but he never slept there. He loved sleeping next to me at night. Comet was an active dog. He loved to go on walks, and we took him to the field twice a day. He became very popular among my friends, and they adored him.

Dogs are the most faithful animals, and Comet was no different. He knew all of us by our smell. Comet loved my mother very much, and when she would come home after work, Comet would jump on her and lick her face. All he wanted to be a little pat on the head. My mother would scratch his neck lovingly, and Comet would bask in all that attention he got.

He was a favorite in the family. We treated him like any other member and took him everywhere we went. We occasionally went on road trips, and Comet loved to ride the car. He would bark joyously when the wind ruffled his fur and enjoy the warm sunlight.

Find other Animal Essay topics .

Comet was extremely protective of my little brother. He had met him when he was barely two months old, and they had developed a connection. Comet would guard Jess when he slept and would not let anybody touch him. Initially, my mother was apprehensive of allowing a dog to get close to Jess, but when she saw how caring Comet was towards Jess, she did not stop him.

Jess was never afraid of Comet. We would put him on Comet’s back, and Comet would carry him around the house. Both of them would be so happy, Jess would laugh lusciously, and Comet would bark with happiness. Jess would stroke his fur and pet him, and Comet would cuddle up next to his crib.

Caring for a pet becomes difficult. We must take care of them and make sure they visit the vet regularly. We must look out for ticks and other skin infections. Maintaining a pet comes with many responsibilities, and we must fulfill them and do what is best for our pets.

Short Essay on My Pet Animal in English 150 words

Taking care of pets is a difficult and time-consuming job and must be done with dedication and love. We must know when to take them to vets and how to take care of them.

My family has always loved pets, and we are very careful about his health. He bathes once a week because too much water is not suitable for his fur. He does not like brushing his teeth, and we have to tempt him with a piece of roasted chicken so that he lets us brush his teeth.

Our dog visits the vet once a month, and he is always rewarded with his favorite food afterward. We make sure he takes his vaccines on time and eats his meals. A healthy pet is essential for the house, and we love to take care of our dog.

Mingi has short hair and also a glossy coat. It is a female and love to have milk and chicken. Sometimes, I treat it with fish as it loves the taste of tuna. Moreover, Mingi is a very loving pet that stays with me at all times.

Ever since I was little, I liked cats. I love how clean and majestic they are. Although, there were no plans to keep a pet cat. My mother did not allow me as she would end up doing all the work for the pet.

However, she used to keep a bowl of fresh water in our garden to ensure no birds or animals remain thirsty during the summer season. A lot of pigeons and sparrows come to my garden to quench their thirst.

One fine day, a cat came to drink the water. It started coming regularly afterwards and gave birth to kittens in our garden. My mother gave them food as well and some milk every day.

However, one day all of them were gone except for a little kitten. I started to feed it regularly and became close to it. As the mother did not return, I decided to keep it as my pet.

After taking permission from my mother, I finally got to keep Mingi by promising to bear its responsibility. Ever since Mingi has been in my life. It was so little but now has grown into a big and beautiful cat.

A Clean Pet

Cats are one of the cleanest pets that do not require a lot of effort to maintain. I hardly have to worry about Mingi being dirty as it cleans itself regularly. I conduct a bathing session every month with my mother.

It is not easy but Mingi is now used to it. We also comb Mingi’s coat twice a week so no dead hair remains and her hygiene is intact. Moreover, it may sound rare but we also brush Mingi’s teeth every week.

During winters , Mingi gets cold so we have got her a warm coat to protect her from the cold. Mingi remains indoors mostly and never dirties our house. Ever since it was little, she knew where to relieve herself so she’s always been low maintenance and love.

In general, the price of a dog tooth extraction is anywhere between $10 and $50, depending on the severity of the situation. For the most part, expect to pay on the lower end of the scale, assuming it’s standard tooth extraction. For severe dental problems and infections, the cost may skyrocket into the thousands .

Dogs , just like humans , have tooth problems from time to time, especially as they grow older. Some dogs tend to have some of the same problems humans do, with overcrowded teeth or new teeth growing beneath adult teeth. Root canals and emergency extractions are common and costly as well.

A typical doggy tooth extraction is the same (in terms of the overall process) as a human tooth extraction. Your veterinarian will take some dental X-rays and place the dog under general anesthesia. From there, it’s just a matter of pulling the tooth, again, assuming everything is normal and there are no underlying issues.

The price of a dog tooth extraction is far more flexible when other issues are going on with your pup’s dental health. Several factors are at play. While the extraction itself is generally inexpensive, you should also consider the cost of X-rays and a general examination before the prep work and extraction take place.

Overcrowded Teeth

This is as commonplace in dogs as it is in humans. Sometimes, their teeth grow in such a way that they are coming up underneath adult teeth or simply don’t have enough space to grow. This can cause pain and make it difficult for your puppy to eat.

Abscess and Gum Disease

Though both are probably less common in dogs than people, it still happens, and it complicates the price of a dog tooth extraction. Gum disease, such as gingivitis, causes long-term problems, especially when the dog is older. An abscess is far more common when your dog has gingivitis, especially over a long time.

Damaged or Fractured Teeth

Dogs are capable of damaging and cracking their teeth . That may be difficult to believe, seeing as they are capable of chewing bones and other hard materials. However, it does happen and it’s capable of causing enormous pain and discomfort.

Cancer is the most dreaded of circumstances but it affects our four-legged friends just as much as it does our loved ones. Anytime a dog is dealing with cancer in their mouth, there’s a good chance that tooth extraction is on the table.

As in everything in life, dental and health issues are rarely singular in terms of cost. If you go to a health clinic, you may see a total cost on your bill, but that cost includes several procedures, including any kind of tests or procedures that take place throughout your visit.

The same is true here. You’ll never go to a veterinarian, head straight back to the room with your pup, have its tooth extracted, and go home. This is especially true if you find yourself in a veterinarian’s office for the very first time.

A first-time visit to the vet always includes a general exam. The vet has to familiarize themselves with the dog’s current health and begin building a chart that will serve as the foundation for all succeeding visits to the vet. A general exam isn’t too costly but, with everything else, it tends to add up in a hurry.

To extract a tooth, general anesthesia is required at most vets. However, a vet cannot administer general anesthesia without doing bloodwork tests first. The bloodwork results will determine whether or not your dog is capable of going under or if it has problems that would complicate such a procedure. A bloodwork test will cost anywhere between $100 and $200.

If it’s the second or third tooth extraction, odds are good your canine won’t have to go through this again unless it’s been quite a while since the last. Like a general examination, an X-ray helps the vet build a baseline foundation on your dog’s dental health and makes it easier to identify problems and solutions down the road.

Since an X-ray is generally included in the price of a dog tooth extraction, you’ll see it as part of the overall bill. The X-ray alone will cost roughly $200 to $250.

General Anesthesia and Nerve Blocks

General anesthesia is kind of an hourly bill, though it has a more standard cost if it’s a short time and the tooth is extracted without any issues. However, if the dog has to stay under for a prolonged period, the cost goes up. For the most part, expect to pay about $250 for the general anesthesia and more if there are complications and the dog has to stay under longer.

A vet will also numb the area around the tooth before extraction. This way, the dog doesn’t wake up confused, with a lot of pain in its mouth. By the time the pain returns, it will be safely home with you and more comfortable. The application of numbing agents costs about $20 to $25 per use.

Aftercare Medicine

As with a doctor or a dentist for people, dogs will get prescription medication as well, usually antibiotics or pain relievers. These will usually cost between $50 and $100, depending on what procedure was done, how long it has to heal, and things of that nature.

Not only will the dog get these medications post-procedure, but it may also get some pre-procedure, costing anywhere between $40 and $90, depending on how much is used before the dog is put under.

Other Potential Costs

Other Potential Costs

Poor dental hygiene can lead to irritated gums in a dog.

©Yavdat/Shutterstock.com

As you can see, the price of a dog tooth extraction is a bit ‘all over the place.’ There are so many factors to consider that it’s difficult to nail down a precise cost. The only way to predict a low-cost procedure is if your pup only needs a small, single-tooth extraction, already has a previous X-ray chart, and there are zero complications pre or post-procedure.

Unfortunately, there are also costs outside of what a vet will do, mostly based on specific teeth, economic factors, and location factors. For instance, if you live near a city, expect to pay a premium if you take your dog to an inner-city dentist, rather than to a suburban or more rural location.

The size of your dog matters too. Don’t expect to pay the same price for tooth extraction in a Great Dane versus the same tooth in a Chihuahua . Carnassial teeth usually cost more as well, simply because they are often the most challenging to handle.

The incisors, deciduous canines, third molars, and premolars are “single-root” teeth and therefore easier to extract. They will cost less, in general, than the other teeth. If the tooth is fractured or there are significant, underlying issues, the cost goes up, sometimes exponentially.

Timing matters as well. An emergency trip to the vet for an immediate tooth extraction is a lot more costly than a set appointment timeframe.

Doggy Dental Insurance

As in humans, so in pets. What we mean to say is, pet dental insurance is nearly the same as human dental insurance. Also, like humans, pet medical insurance is unlikely to cover dental procedures. Pet dental insurance will cover the price of a dog tooth extraction, however, along with all of the associated procedure costs.

A major dental issue is costly enough that it should be a warning sign that pet dental insurance is a necessity. It can save you thousands of dollars, especially if there are major complications in your dog’s dental health. While the price of single tooth extraction is no big deal, it rarely works out that way in real life.

All Things Considered

Unfortunately, the price of a dog tooth extraction is not as cut and dry as it is on paper. There is usually something going on. Even when there isn’t, you still have to calculate the costs of associated procedures, such as X-rays, general anesthesia, and before or aftercare.

With pet insurance, you will save a lot of money if your dog is going through serious dental issues. However, it’s up to you whether or not it’s worth it in your particular circumstance. Either way, the odds are fair that your dog will need a dental procedure at some point, usually when it is older. It always pays to be prepared!

Dozens of neglected animals found without food, water rescued from Riverside County home

Leticia Juarez Image

SAN JACINTO, Calif. (KABC) -- The Nixon Fire that broke out in Aguanga last week led to a horrifying discovery - a home filled with animals in various states of neglect, left without food or water.

"I have been here a long time, and I have never seen a group of animals that included livestock, and dogs, and reptiles, and amphibians, and the small hamsters, and rodents," said Jaclyn Schart, the deputy director of operations for the Riverside County Department of Animal Services.

"This is totally bizarre to us. There's even some roaches."

A deputy helping with evacuations during the Nixon Fire spotted the property and alerted the Riverside County Department of Animal Services, officials said. Animal services officers seized more than 100 animals Wednesday.

All the animals appeared underweight and in need of medical care, according to investigators.

In the barn, fowl ranging from chickens to ducks and turkeys were kept together, while goats were in another stall.

Two of the horses appeared skinny and their hooves in need of attention. Several pigs also were underweight.

The animals are now at the San Jacinto Valley Animal Shelter.

Schart said some of the animals even came in shoe boxes and plastic containers.

"They were in no way housing for these animals, so even though our housing is not what we want it to be long-term, at least were able to get them into something clean," she said.

Some of the animals taken from the home had to be transferred to another shelter for lack of space.

While investigators gather evidence for a possible cruelty case against the owner, shelter staff are quickly learning more about the unusual species in their care, like a baby savannah monitor lizard.

"I was able to gather what types of food, heat sources and what not, so I'm going to go shopping after this to make sure that we have everything that we need for these little guys," shelter manager Maria Vogel said.

The shelter is used to caring for dogs, cats and the occasional exotic pet, but several dogs confiscated from the home aren't your typical.

"The community has shared with us their concern that this person was breeding wolf-hybrid-type dogs or some version of such," Schart said.

With the shelter bursting with animals in critical need, they are asking the public for help by either adopting, fostering or volunteering at the shelter.

They also need more towels, blankets and spare aquariums.

"We're just totally overwhelmed by this eclectic group in this menagerie," Schart said.

The animals at the shelter will not be ready for adoption right away as the legal process unwinds and rescue organizations are contacted. Once they are available, they'll be posted on the Riverside County Department of Animal Services website .

ROME (AP) — Fashion house Dolce & Gabbana has launched a new alcohol-free perfume for dogs called ‘Fefé’ in honor of Domenico Dolce ’s poodle, but not all vets and pet owners agree it’s safe or appropriate.

The perfume costs 99 euros ($108) for 100 milliliters (3.4 ounces) and has been certified suitable for animal use. It follows a Safe Pet Cosmetics protocol designed to ensure a degree of safety of cosmetic products for animals comparable to that required for humans, Dolce & Gabbana said.

“Through a compliance recognition to this protocol granted by Bureau Veritas Italia, participating companies demonstrate their sensitivity in creating products that ensure the safety and respect of the animal, in accordance with established standards,” the company said in the statement issued for the launch of the perfume.

Bureau Veritas Italia is a publicly held company that provides inspection, laboratory verification and certification services.

All of the dog owners consulted agree that the fragrance is “gentle and well accepted by their pets,” and veterinarians approve of the product, according to the company web page dedicated to ‘Fefé’, which cites performance reviews by veterinarians and customers.

But not all veterinarians agree on the use of perfumes for dogs, as they may interfere with the animal’s sense of smell and cover up bad odors that could be a symptom of diseases.

“Dogs recognize themselves by smells, they recognize a person by a smell,” said Federico Coccía, a veterinarian in Rome who holds a doctorate from the University of Teramo.

“When the dog arrives, he sees you, wags his tail, but first smells you and then recognizes you because you are stored in one of his ‘smell drawers.’ Therefore, this world of smells should not be changed,” Coccia added.

Coccia said becoming aware of an ongoing dermatological disease can be problematic if dogs’ natural odors are covered up. “In the case of sebaceous dermatitis, for instance, the smell somehow completes my diagnosis.”

“The smell of breath, the smell of earwax are disguised by the perfume. So, it could be a problem even for us vets,” Coccia said.

Among the enthusiastic users of pet fragrances are groomers who take care of the hair and aesthetics of dogs.

Aliof Rilova Tano, a dog groomer at Morgana Carpentieri’s La Boutique delle Birbe parlor in Rome, said that in general he is in favor of using fragrances for pets.

“Our dogs live with us, so a little dog at home on the couch next to us with a perfume is always pleasant,” he said.

Grooming customers often feel the same way, so much so that customer Mariarita Ricciardi said she is in favor of “anything that has to do with a natural scenting ... and that can also help the quality of the hair.”

However, there are also pet owners who would never use perfumes on their animals.

“Especially brand perfumes, it seems to be a very exaggerated process of humanization,” said Francesca Castelli, a dog-owner strolling in Rome’s Villa Borghese.

More than 100 neglected dogs, horses, birds, pet cockroaches rescued from California home

Authorities became aware of the home in aguanga while investigating the nixon fire in riverside county. animal services later found pets living in terrible conditions and have saved them..

More than 100 neglected creatures, ranging from dogs and horses to birds and “pet cockroaches,” have been rescued from a home in Southern California.

The property was discovered in the aftermath of the Nixon Fire , which burned more than 5,000 acres of land in Riverside County beginning on July 29. While evacuating people from the fire, a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy noticed the house, located in the town on Aguanga, and tipped off officials with the county Department of Animal Services.

Arriving at the property on Wednesday, Animal Services officials found dozens of animals being kept in terrible conditions, including three horses, six goats, and numerous dogs, according to a news release from the Riverside County Department of Animal Services.

Among other pets: Parakeets, mice, chickens

Other animals rescued from the property included chickens, mice, parakeets, cockatiels, quail, geese, one turkey, and what were described as “pet cockroaches.”

“This was one of the more unique investigations we’ve had, considering the wide arrange of critters now needing our assistance,” Animal Services Director Erin Gettis said in a statement.

Several dogs believed to have come from the property were also rescued prior to the seizure this week.

Many of the animals rescued were taken to the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus for care and recovery. A miniature horse and a sheep, believed to be a bonded pair, were taken to the county animal shelter, according to Animal Services.

Owner was not present

The homeowner was not present when the animals were seized and failed to respond to two noticed posted at the property in late July, according to Animal Services.

The county Animal Services department said it will seek felony animal cruelty charges when it submits evidence to the Riverside County District Attorney’s office.

Turkey Aims to Cull Its Stray Dogs. Critics Say It’s About Politics.

Turkey’s new law aimed at moving millions of stray dogs to shelters, and allowing some to be euthanized, has both cultural and political implications.

A lone white dog with dirty fur rests on a manicured green lawn in front of a mosque at dusk.

By Sarah Hurtes

Dogs have been a prominent part of Turkish culture for centuries. The Kangal Shepherd breed is a national treasure featured on postage stamps, and some strays have become local celebrities, like Boji , who earned fame for riding Istanbul’s public transportation.

But this year, Turkey’s stray dogs have become a contentious political issue.

The country’s Parliament passed a law this week requiring municipalities to round up stray dogs and put them into shelters, and permitting aggressive or ill animals to be euthanized. The law mandates shelter improvements by 2028 and threatens mayors with prison time if they don’t enforce the law.

But critics have expressed fears that the law may be used to target political opponents of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose ruling party pushed through the legislation. Some are also concerned about inadequate, overcrowded shelters for the country’s stray dog population — estimated to be around four million.

“The shelter capacity is insufficient,” said Dr. Murat Arslan, the president of the Turkish Veterinary Medical Association. All the country’s shelters combined have capacity for just over 100,000 animals, he said, and most municipalities have no shelters at all.

“Currently, 3,000 veterinarians are employed in municipalities, but at least 10,000 more are needed,” Dr. Arslan said, noting that the new law does not require hiring additional veterinarians. In December, Dr. Arslan’s agency presented its recommendations to the government. “We provided our report and explained the source of the problem,” he said. “I don’t think they took any of it into account.”
