9 Festive Holiday-Themed Writing Activities For Middle School ELA

festive writing activities for middle school

Looking to fill the last weeks of December with holiday-themed writing activities? You’ve come to the right place! Channel your holiday spirit while engaging students in fun yet meaningful learning opportunities.

Many teachers feel like getting anything meaningful done in these last weeks of December is impossible. And, yes, as winter break inches closer, it becomes more challenging to keep students on task. However, if you find creative ways to bring festive fun into your classroom, you can channel the holiday spirit into meaningful learning opportunities.

I’m here to help you leverage that festive (and sometimes chaotic) energy to engage students in writing activities that align with educational standards and bring the holiday magic into your classroom. The best part? It doesn’t have to involve hours of planning and prep work. (That’s a gift in itself.)

Read on to discover my favorite low-prep writing activities designed to keep students engaged in learning while having a holly jolly time in the weeks leading up to the holiday break.

9 Fun & Festive Writing Activities

Stop battling the “pre-winter break” struggle with your students. Instead, make the most of the holiday spirit by assigning these festive and fun writing activities perfect for December!

1. Character Ugly Sweater Contest

Like an ugly sweater contest, but make it literary.

Hosting a character ugly sweater contest is the perfect way to combine characterization with a little holiday fun. This activity seamlessly blends creative artwork with analytical writing, challenging students to design a Christmas sweater for a literary character. Start with a blank ugly sweater template . Then, let students have fun decorating an “ugly” sweater that represents their chosen character, including quotes, images, symbols, adjectives, and more. Have each student write a paragraph analysis explaining their choices, turning a classic festive sweater into an opportunity for character exploration and analysis.

Alternatively, you can have your students create symbolic sweaters representing a theme or an entire novel!

2. Winter-Themed Poetry

A perfect writing activity for December and beyond.

If you’re looking to steer clear of specific holidays, winter-themed poetry is the perfect option. Encourage your students to explore the beauty of winter through the lens of poetry. This is a perfect opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge of figurative language and poetic devices. Students will have a blast bringing winter to life through symbolism, metaphors, personification, symbolism, onomatopoeia, and more! To add an extra layer of creativity, have students exchange and illustrate each other’s poems, putting their descriptive writing to the ultimate test. Then, they can go around matching the illustrations to the poems.

If you want to kick up the holiday spirit, have your students write magically descriptive poems about abstract concepts, like holiday cheer, or concrete images, like a Christmas tree.

3. “Paint” a Picture with Sensory Details

Oh, what fun it is to write with sensory details!

Looking for a quick yet effective writing activity this December? This is it. Challenge students to describe the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures associated with the holidays. Whether it’s the scent of gingerbread, a twinkling Christmas tree, or the soft crunch of snow under your boots, students bring classic holiday settings or items to life with this fun writing challenge. Encourage them to create a description by combining descriptive writing and as many of the five senses as possible.

Want to add a little twist? Have students share their descriptions, and their peers guess the holiday element based on the vivid sensory details.

4. Holiday Memories

Practice narrative writing with a holiday twist.

Teaching narrative writing is a must in the secondary classroom, and it certainly comes with its challenges. Luckily, December is the perfect time to inspire and engage students in narrative writing prompts. Rather than the dreaded “I have nothing to write about” roadblock, students tend to have more to say regarding their favorite holiday memories and traditions. Challenge them to delve into their most cherished holiday memories, describing them with great detail through sensory language and imagery. Remind students that their pieces should make the reader feel like they were also experiencing the moment.

This reflective exercise sharpens narrative writing skills while tapping into the magic of the holidays.

5. “Roll Out” a Holiday Story

Another festive activity to help students surpass writer’s block.

Break through the “what do I write about” roadblock with the “Roll Out” A Holiday Story activity. Select six holiday-related options for classic story elements such as character, setting, conflict, and theme. Assign each option a number 1-6 so when students roll the dice for each component, it will determine a brainstorm for their narrative. Not only does this spark creativity, it also gives each student something more specific to write about while leaving plenty of room for creative fun. These unique plots often turn out festive and sweet or ridiculously funny, making them a joy to read.

This engaging exercise transforms the (often dreaded) writing process into a fun and festive game, making it both entertaining and intellectually stimulating.

6. A Festive Argument

Teenagers love to argue, right? So, why not make it festive?

While this activity has the main elements of a classic argumentative writing activity, it has a festive twist. Rather than choosing from traditional argumentative prompts regarding social media or school uniforms, provide students with a list of holiday-themed topics to take a stance on. This writing activity requires them to employ persuasive and argumentative writing techniques, incorporating ethos, pathos, and logos, to make their case. Despite the holiday twist, students must articulate their opinions in a structured and convincing manner.

Some favorite topics include arguing for the best Christmas tradition, holiday movie, or winter activity. Feel free to steal these for your classroom!

7. A Children’s Christmas Book

Who doesn’t love a good Christmas story?

This activity is a great way to review plot structure and get into the Christmas spirit. Invite students to gather around as you read a few of your favorite Christmas stories before encouraging them to write (and illustrate) one of their own. Students will craft holiday tales, bringing the magic of storytelling to life through words and illustrations. It’s also a perfect opportunity for students to exercise their knowledge of theme and descriptive writing. Spread the cheer by teaming up with a local elementary classroom and having your students read their stories to the younger kids.

Remember, it’s possible that some of your students don’t celebrate Christmas. Adjust this activity to best reflect your students’ winter holidays and traditions.

8. A Recipe for the Perfect Holiday

Talk about a recipe for festive fun!

Writing about abstract concepts can be challenging for students. That’s where this activity comes into play. Rather than the pressure of diving into an abstract concept in an analytical essay, students will transform holiday-related abstract ideas into concrete creations with this fun and creative writing activity. Instead of writing a recipe for holiday food, students will write their recipe for the perfect holiday. Students must create a list of “ingredients” before bringing it all together with a step-by-step process. Since holidays mean something different to each person based on their experiences and traditions, this is a personalized activity packed with meaning.

Have students bring in their favorite holiday recipe (for an actual food or beverage) to share with the class and serve as inspiration for the elements of a recipe.

9. Gingerbread House Listing

Get ready for a tasty treat of persuasive writing!

In this writing activity, students aren’t necessarily decorating gingerbread houses, but they are trying to sell them. Have students put on their realtor hats and use persuasive writing to “sell” their very own gingerbread house. Students will draw a gingerbread house before creating a compelling real-estate listing, attempting to convince you to make a purchase. I recommend having students review actual house listings first to get inspiration and build a stronger understanding of what to include. This hands-on approach combines real-life writing with creativity and holiday fun.

You can take this a step further by letting your students actually build their gingerbread houses for a delicious extension activity!

Even More Holiday Writing Activities

Ho, ho, ho no it doesn’t end there! Here are a few more holiday writing activities to sprinkle into your plans over the next few weeks.

  • Assign festive bell ringers
  • Write a Christmas dialogue
  • Provide holiday story starters
  • Create Christmas movie character diary entries
  • Write creative holiday-themed news articles
  • Take a stance on the great real vs. fake tree debate
  • Correct grammar in holiday-themed sentences

So Much Holiday Writing Fun to Have, So Little Time

If you’re like me, you may want to do all of the things. But trying to do that (in the weeks leading up to the holiday break, no less) is enough to drive any teacher insane. And I’m all for supporting teachers in maintaining their sanity during these next few weeks. In fact, if you need some tips to help you do so, check out my teacher’s guide to surviving the holiday season .

If you’re torn between choosing from multiple writing activities in this post, consider doing a Holiday writing choice board. Your middle school students will love the freedom to select a writing activity that resonates with their interests. The element of choice promotes a sense of ownership over their writing while keeping students engaged and focused on festive yet meaningful activities leading up to winter break.

It’s Time to Get Festive!

Rather than fighting to get your students to pay attention, channel their festive spirit into meaningful classroom experiences. Trust me, it works wonders. So, if your students normally moan and groan when you assign writing, get ready for a change! Middle school students always eat these festive writing activities up.

Christmas Activities for Middle School Students

By  MARISSA DESPINS  Updated April 03, 2024

Favorite Christmas Activities for Middle School Students

Well, it is a few days past Remembrance Day (Veterans Day), which means it is officially time to start thinking about the holidays! In Canada, our Thanksgiving is in November, which means that as soon as Remembrance Day is done, we are 100% in Christmas mode. To kickstart the holiday season, I thought I would pop on her today to share two of my favorite Christmas activities for Middle School students.

To see all of the no prep resources I have available in my TPT shop, click on the image or button below!

Favorite Christmas Activities for Middle School Students

1- Holiday Short Stories

Reading aloud The Gift of the Magi by O’Henry is definitely my favorite Christmas activities for middle school students. It is the perfect holiday story to read along with my students around Christmas time. The story revolves around a couple who are very much in love and are trying to find the perfect gifts for each other. Financial hardships make gift purchasing difficult, leading them both to make sacrifices for each other. It is a beautiful story about selflessness and giving, and really embodies the true spirit of Christmas.

If you are not familiar with the story, you can listen to it read aloud here:

I have been teaching this story with my middle school learners for several years, and it is always a favorite. Recently I have had my students create comprehension pennants to go along with the story. I love how they contain work that is holiday themed but still rigorous. Also, they make gorgeous Christmas hallway displays!

Favorite Christmas Activities for Middle School Students

Students simply use the included close reading resources to help them answer the questions on the template. Then, they can color, cut out, and assemble their pennants. We hung ours in the hallway for parents to check out on the way to the Christmas assembly!

2- Holiday Story Writing

Creative writing is another of my favorite Christmas activities for middle school students. I find that it keeps a bit of the crazies at bay, as it asks students to focus and write quietly. These holiday descriptive writing activities are always a hit, as they prevent students from getting stuck when it comes to deciding what to write about. You won’t hear the dreaded “I don’t know what to write!” with these activities!

First, I shuffle the stacks of cards. There are different cards for different literary elements – conflict, character, and setting. There are also cards for bonus fun items. I separate the cards into piles and let students choose a few from each stack.

Favorite Christmas Activities for Middle School Students

Because students have the cards to base their stories on, everyone has a solid story to write about.

Next, students use the included literary elements notes on plot, conflict, character, and setting to help them plan out their stories. We use the planning pages and blank plot diagram to draft out our stories before starting our good copies.

Favorite Christmas Activities for Middle School Students

When the stories are complete, we make covers and bind the pages together with Christmas ribbon. These make great parent gifts for the students to take home!

Christmas Writing Activities for Kids

Write a letter to community members.

Giving to others is the spirit of the season, so why not give the gift of a kind word with a writing activity that spreads holiday cheer?

Have your students use a writing template to write a kind letter to a veteran or someone who lives in your local nursing home? Many people in the community may not have close family members to spend time with or hear from, and a student-written letter can bring warm holiday cheer. Not only does this give students an opportunity to practice their letter writing, but it also serves as a lesson in thinking of others.

Write About the Change in Seasons

It may be Christmas time, but that’s not the only big day on the calendar. The first day of winter is smack dab in the middle of December, and it offers up perfect writing prompts!

For example, you can have your students write about how the weather changes from fall to winter in your area. What happens to the trees? How different is the temperature? Supplement this activity with a sketch of the changes they notice.

Write a Letter to the Grinch

Everyone thinks to write a letter to Santa, but what about the green furry creature we call the Grinch? California second-grade teacher Anna Demeritt shared that she had her students write letters to the Grinch explaining why they loved Christmas and why the Grinch’s heart should change about the time of year.

Each letter was accompanied by a Grinch drawing. Compile all the letters together into a cute bulletin board display!

Write a Letter to Santa … And Get One Back!

We know, we know, it’s not the most creative Christmas writing activity. Then again, this oldie is still a goodie! Writing a letter to Santa is even more fun when you can get a letter back from the big guy (with a little help from the elves at the United States Post Office, of course).

Here’s how it works:

  • Write a personalized response to your students’ letters and sign it from Santa.
  • Insert both letters into an envelope and address it to your classroom — so Santa knows where to send his replies.
  • Send off to the USPS.
  • Wait for your special letter to your class to come back with an official North Pole postmark!
To find out how to get letters back to your students, visit the United States Post Office .

Give Santa a Vacation

Everyone deserves some rest and relaxation, including Santa! Fourth and fifth-grade teacher Mrs. J of Canada had her students design a vacation for Santa, describing where he should go and what he should do while he’s there.

This student had a creative response saying Santa should go to the moon and float, play hide and seek, play video games, do some math and yoga!

Create North Pole Postcards

If you’re teaching older students who have moved beyond the “letter to Santa” stage, why not have your class write postcards from the North Pole, incorporating some of the things they have learned in science class about the Earth’s northernmost point, such as climate, animal life and landscape.

These postcards also make a quick and easy alternative to Christmas cards.

Roll to Create a Holiday Story

Put a Christmas twist on writing center activities before winter break with this hands-on Roll to Create a Holiday Story writing activity that uses a die and a chart to provide students with story elements they then put into their narrative writing.

How to use this resource:

  • Students roll a die and identify the corresponding story element on the chart.
  • Each story element is recorded at the bottom of the sheet.
  • Once students have “rolled” the characters, setting, and problem for their story, they can begin to write their narrative.

Write About Learning Something New

Encourage your students to think about what they know about winter and holiday celebrations around the world. Have they ever experienced the holiday season in a different country? Is there a holiday, tradition or celebration they’d like to know more about? Some of your students’ responses may just inspire a new lesson in the classroom this winter!

Practice Writing Thank You Cards

‘Tis the season to practice gratitude, and with the holidays upon us, many of your students will be giving and receiving gifts. You can’t make anyone send thank you notes (sigh), but you can practice letter writing in the classroom by writing thank you notes to school staff members to brighten their holidays.

Encourage your students to say thank you to the custodian who keeps the classroom in tip-top shape, the cafeteria staff who keep them in cartons of milk, or perhaps to the teacher’s aide who helps out in your classroom.

Not only is this a good way to practice their letter-writing skills, but it’s a good social-emotional lesson on gratitude too.

Select Random Holiday Words and Write About Them

We’re kind of partial to our free spin wheel  widget for the classroom . It has soooo many possibilities in the classroom. One creative writing idea for Christmas? Add a few holiday words, spin the wheel, and ue it as a Christmas writing prompt!

You can direct students to write as much as they can in five minutes about the holiday word. You can also make this activity more inclusive by using winter words like these in place of the Christmas words.

Write a Holiday How To

This expository writing activity puts a holiday twist on “how to” writing as your students practice writing instructions on decorating the holiday tree.

Here are some of our teacher team’s favorite “how to” Christmas writing prompts:

  • How do you build a snowman?
  • How do you decorate a Christmas tree ?
  • How do you bake gingerbread cookies?
  • How do you build a snow fort?
  • How do you create a snow angel?
  • How do you decorate a gingerbread house ?
  • How do you take care of Santa’s reindeer?

Use Would You Rather Questions as Writing Prompts

Would you rather questions make excellent writing prompts! Provide students with challenging Christmas would you rather questions , and require them to use facts to back up their persuasive paragraph.

Use Holiday Finger Puppets

How cute are these holiday finger puppets ? Using puppets in the classroom is great for language-building and can be used to reinforce the concepts of prepositions in your centers for younger learners. For example, a child can move their puppet “under” the table, and their classmates have to use the right words (the gingerbread is “under”).

These puppets include a/an:

  • Christmas Tree
  • Santa Claus
  • Gingerbread Man

Printable Holiday Finger Puppets on fingers

  • Encourage students to choose a few of the finger puppets and write a script for a puppet show they can perform for the class.
  • Have students choose their favorite 2–3 finger puppets and write a story using them as characters.
  • Have students complete a character description for their favorite puppet.

Use a Christmas Scene

Why not use this winter Christmas image   and task cards set to spark some great imaginative writing? The Santa-themed image comes with more than a dozen different prompts to help kids practice their inferencing skills. But you can take it a step further!

Here are some writing prompts that you can use:

  • Have your students practice writing dialogue by writing a conversation Santa and the elf might be having.
  • Have your students practice their descriptive language by writing sentences about the scene.
  • Have your students write a narrative text explaining who is in the sleigh outside the window if Santa is inside.
  • Have your students write about the events leading up to the scene in the picture.

Utilize Your Elf on the Shelf

Many teachers are using the Elf On a Shelf in the classroom these days. Why not use this to your advantage and get the cheeky elf to write a message on the whiteboard that requires the children to write a letter back?

Make Holiday Cards

Making holiday cards is a writing activity and a craft activity all in one, and these glittery tree cards are always a hit with students.

  • Green glittery paper
  • Colored construction paper or cardstock
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Thin ribbon
  • Glue or adhesive tape

Instructions

  • To make the strips for the tree, cut out strips so that the height of the strip is half of the width, getting larger as you go (our card uses 1-in x 0.5-in,  2-in x 1-in, 3-in x 1.5-in, 3.5-in x 2-in, and 4-in x 2-in)
  • Fold each strip so the top outer corners meet in the middle at the bottom.
  • Starting at the top, glue each tree triangle to your card so that the folds are facing up, slightly overlapping each piece as you go.
  • Top your tree with the yellow star, and paste your brown paper tree trunk at the bottom.
  • Twist together the pipe cleaners and cut them in half. Attach one strip to the top of the card and one to the bottom.

Teacher-Written Lesson Plans to Reinforce Common Core State Standards | ELA Core Plans

Middle School ELA Christmas Writing Activity

I wanted to share my favorite middle school ELA Christmas writing activity that I do each year a couple of days before our Christmas break.   We  play a gift exchange game, but students do not have to spend any money.   The best part is that students have a ton of fun, and I tie in some writing instruction as well!

So, here’s how this middle school ELA Christmas writing activity works.  Students bring in something from home – nothing new and something that they can give away. They can bring it in wrapped or wrap it at school with wrapping paper provided by me. The number one rule is that they must not tell anyone what their gift is, not even their BFF!  It can be a gag gift but must be appropriate for school. I’ve had students bring in everything from a potato to a cute pencil pouch.  Some students get really creative.  One girl brought in a can of beans with a note that said “homemade bubble bath”.  I usually spend some time giving examples of what is and what is not appropriate.

Once students have brought in their gifts, we complete the first writing assignment.  I explain to students that we will be playing a gift exchange game and that someone in the class will choose their gift.  The thing is, however, students will not be able to open the gifts that they choose.  Instead, they will read the paragraph out loud that describes the gift.  A day or two before the game, students must write a paragraph describing the gift in an interesting way.  They cannot use the name of the gift or anything that would be a “dead give away”.  Instead, they must describe what someone could do with this gift in an imaginative, creative way.  For example, if a student brings in a potato, in the paragraph, I could not write, “This is something you bake or boil and eat.”  I could not use the word potato.  Instead, I would have to describe an imaginative use for it, like, “This will be a perfect paper weight.  If you are often bothered by your papers flying all over the place when your windows are open, then this is the ideal gift for you.  It is just the right size, weight, and color to nicely hold your papers in place.  Also, this gift can be used as a pencil holder.  It can hold at least ten or twelve pencils or pens nicely.”

Once all of the wrapped gifts are in class and all of the paragraphs are written, we are ready to play the game.  This is perfect for the day before the break!  Each wrapped gift has the paragraph with it.  I pull Popsicle sticks with students’ names on them to decide the order in which students choose gifts.  Each student chooses a gift and reads the paragraph out loud.  No one can open a gift until everyone has one.  Students can “steal” a gift from another student when it is their turn or choose from the pile.  Of course, the only thing they have to go on is the paragraph, but if a paragraph does a good job describing some wonderful use of the gift, people will want to “steal”it.  I allow a gift to be “stolen” three times before it is “frozen”.

Once all students have a gift, they open them one at a time so we can all oooh and ahhhh or laugh.  Then, it is time for our final writing assignment.   Students must write a thank you note to the person who gave the gift thanking them for it and telling them how they will use it.  Students must be creative with their thank you notes and be grateful no matter what it is that they received.

This middle school ELA Christmas writing activity is loads of fun, adds a festive atmosphere to your classroom, and includes two creative writing assignments!   Click here for the free download of the directions, a rubric, and a cute handout for kids to use to write their paragraph.  Merry Christmas!

P.S.  I always bring in a few extra “gifts” for those students who may forget one.  Remember, anything can be a gift, even things like paperclips or erasers in your teacher desk drawer!

Christmas Activities Comprehension for Middle School

Finding the right Christmas reading comprehension activities and worksheets for middle school can help alleviate some of the stress ELA teachers face during the holidays. Many middle school students are very excited and may fondly remember working on Christmas activities in elementary school. I always wanted to include festive activities in my lesson plans, but I just didn’t have the room in our pacing calendar to do anything that wasn’t based on the standards. I decided to create these fun and engaging Christmas reading comprehension activities to use in my middle school classroom.

Engage your middle school students with Christmas reading comprehension passages.

Your middle school students are used to reading passages, so I created reading comprehension passages that they would get excited about! My Santa Claus differentiated reading passage explains the history of Santa Claus. The Reindeer differentiated passage will inform your students about reindeer. These reading comprehension passages come written at two levels and include a differentiated context clues activity, reading comprehension questions, and a writing assignment. These print and go activities are perfect for independent work so that you can work on your to do list in the days before the holiday break.

Christmas Reading Passages for Middle School

Give your students authentic practice making inferences with this Christmas text message analysis activity!

People make inferences regularly, but our students don’t always realize this. My text message analysis activities are very popular because students love the familiar format and provide great inferencing practice. I created a special Christmas version of this resource that allows students to practice making inferences while reading festive text messages.

Christmas inference activity for middle school

Let your students color AND practice reading comprehension skills at the same time!

Coloring is a fun and relaxing activity for all ages. I created these context clues color by number activities to allow students to practice using context clues while coloring fun images. In this resource, students will read Christmas-themed sentences and use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. They will then color in boxes to reveal a mystery image.

The holidays can be a stressful time for teachers. The excitement of students can often lead to difficult behaviors. These Christmas reading comprehension activities and worksheets are a perfect way to be festive while focusing on the standards!

3 Free Christmas Printables for Your Middle School ELA Classroom

free Christmas printables for middle school language arts

Adding new instructional formats and activities during the holidays is an easy way to boost engagement in your ELA classroom. If you are looking for some fresh ideas, I have included some free Christmas printables below that I use with my own middle school students. Try these freebies as mini-lessons to see how your students respond to the activities. If they find them engaging, you will have another tool to add to your teacher toolbox !

Holiday Student Discussion Prompts

The first freebie is a set of holiday task cards you can use to organize collaborative discussions between students. I call them CHIT CHAT CARDS and I use variations of them throughout the year to offer students a way to practice concepts without the need for written responses or grading.

Collaborative conversation task cards for middle schoolers

This free Holiday Chit Chat Card printable includes 12 different discussion prompts related to Christmas, New Year’s, and other holiday traditions. Use them to help your students become better listeners, speakers, and thinkers. They will love the time they have to interact, share, and discuss text.

CHristmas Traditions Reader’s Theater

Did you know that many of our American Christmas traditions originated with St. Nicholas? This reader’s theater script recreates the discussion between a teacher and her middle school students as they learn about the origin of the annual St. Nicholas Night festivities in their own town.

Christmas readers theater PDF printable for middle school language arts

If you haven’t had a chance to try reader’s theater in your classroom, then this script is the perfect opportunity. It works well for both whole-class and small-group reads, or you can try it with your sub plans as a holiday activity. After students complete the script, there are reader response questions, a context clue worksheet, and a journal prompt to use as comprehension activities.

Winter Personification Worksheet

Students must understand that personification is not to be taken literally; instead, it is figurative language that gives writing more pizazz or zing. My students can always use additional practice identifying personification within text, not to mention using it in their own writing. This free personification worksheet offers an opportunity to do both.

Free personification worksheet for middle school ELA teachers

Use this worksheet activity in small groups, independently, or in a literacy center. The winter season, with all its references to holiday characters and unique weather elements, provides the perfect backdrop to review personification. This free resource will keep your students engaged with holiday themes while staying on task with their learning.

Bonus Printable: Gift Ideas for Teachers

Looking for cheap and fun gift ideas for your teacher friends? I created this Teacher Goodies Gift Book to show appreciation to all of my teacher friends, teammates, and staff members.
