Making an appeal

Please use the Appeals and Complaints Tool below for guidance on submitting an appeal:

Appeals and Complaints Tool

When you receive your results you may feel dissatisfied about your feedback or marks. We always encourage you to discuss any concerns with an appropriate member of your programme team or your Personal Tutor, as they may be able to reassure you, explain the details and resolve any concerns you have. In addition you can contact SUBU Advice or AskBU Students’ Service for further advice.

When you have discussed with the programme team and understand what your options are if you feel you have grounds to make an appeal there are separate appeals policies for taught awards (undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses) and for postgraduate research awards. These are available in the ‘Appeals’ section of the Important Information page. The policies explain what you need to do.

It is important for you to be aware that when you submit a formal appeal, until you know the outcome of your appeal, the decision of the Assessment Board stands and your results and instructions for reassessment remain unchanged.

More information

What should i do if i want to formally appeal against the decision of the assessment board.

It is important that you read and understand the relevant policy document, as well as the Student Guidance for making an appeal .

You can ask for advice from SUBU Advice or AskBU Students’ Service if you need to. You will then need to complete the Appeal Form (available in the ‘Appeals’ section of the  Important Information  page) and submit this to your Faculty Education Service Manager within ten working days of receiving your results - see contact details below.

An academic appeal can only be considered on one or more the following grounds:

  • There has been a material irregularity or significant administrative error in the assessment process
  • The assessment was not conducted in accordance with the regulations for the programme
  • A student’s performance in assessment has been affected by illness or other factors which, for valid reason(s), they were unable to divulge before the meeting of the Assessment Board (see Exceptional Circumstances policy and procedure )
  • There has been bias or the perception of bias in the assessment process / consideration of the appeal.

You will also need to provide evidence to support your claim.

Please be aware that an appeal based on the fact that you disagree with the grade or marks that you have been given will not be considered within the grounds listed above. This would be questioning the academic judgement of the markers and/ or assessment board.

You are also reminded that, without a valid reason (and evidence to support that reason), if you did not submit Exceptional Circumstances for an extension/ postponement or Board Consideration ahead of the Assessment Board an appeal on this ground will not be upheld.

The following are the contact details for each Faculty Education Support Manager (ESM) in order to submit your appeal or for any queries:

  • BU Business School (BUBS) - Emma Jackson  [email protected]
  • Faculty of Health & Social Sciences (FHSS) - Kathryn Cheshir  [email protected]
  • Faculty of Media & Communication (FMC) - Sharen Everitt  [email protected]
  • Faculty of Science & Technology (FST) - Paula Alliston  [email protected]

What will happen to my appeal?

Your formal appeal will be considered by the Faculty Education Services Manager (or their nominee) and you will receive a response in writing, usually within 20 working days. This is called the ‘Formal Stage’. The possible outcomes are listed in the relevant policy (available in the ‘Appeals’ section of the Important Information page).

When you have received a response from the Formal Stage you may decide to request that your case is considered at the Review Stage. You will need to complete the additional sections of the form and submit this to [email protected] within ten working days of receiving the response from the Formal Stage. Appeals received after the deadline will normally be rejected.

You will usually receive a response from the Review Stage within 20 working days. Please refer to the relevant policy (available in the ‘Appeals’ section of the Important Information page) for information in relation to this.

Mitigating circumstances: update to policy.

We have made an important change to the process for mitigating circumstances and introduced a new short-term sickness notification procedure for the 2013-14 academic year. Please take a moment to understand what this could mean for you if you need to submit evidence of short-term sickness for a coursework extension, exam postponement or Board consideration of circumstances.

Previously, you needed to provide a medical certificate / other appropriate independently verified evidence for all mitigating circumstances requests which may have been difficult or costly to obtain for cases of short-term sickness. Short-term sickness is an illness which lasts no longer than 5 days.  The University has now introduced a new procedure whereby you can notify us of short-term sickness. The key points to be aware of are:

  • You must phone your Programme or Course Administrator on the first day you realise that your assessment performance may be affected by sickness or prevent you from meeting an assignment deadline/sitting an exam. Other forms of communication will not be accepted.
  • The Administrator will complete a ‘Short-Term Sickness Notification Form’ and email this to you. You then need to submit this as evidence along with the relevant completed Extension/Exam Postponement Request Form or Board Consideration of Circumstances Request Form.
  • NB You will not be able to inform us of your sickness retrospectively, i.e. after your assignment deadline/time of your exam under the short-term sickness notification procedure. Where necessary, the telephone call can be made on the day of the assessment, but must be before the submission deadline/start of the exam and no later than 4pm.
  • NB If your sickness lasts more than 5 days, you must provide a medical certificate/other appropriately verified evidence in order for your circumstances to be considered.

The full short-term sickness procedure can be found in 6J – Mitigating Circumstances including Extensions: Policy and Procedure (see Section 1.2 in Appendix 3 and Appendix 6 in particular). This document and other academic regulations, policies and procedures concerning students can be accessed throughout the year on the Student Portal under Rules and Regulations should you need to consult them. If you find you have a query in relation to any of the documents, please discuss these with the relevant member of your course team, your administrator or the SUBU advice team.
