About the Department

Since its inception in July 2009, the Department of Mathematics has evolved in several directions. The department presently offers M.Sc. and Ph. D. programs in Mathematics. In addition to these programs, the department teaches several Mathematics courses to the undergraduate and postgraduate students of various engineering and science departments. The department aims to focus on providing a comprehensive curriculum at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, relevant research and career opportunities in India and abroad.

The department is starting B. Tech. program in Mathematics and Computing from 2023. This program is especially designed for the undergraduate students having strong inclination toward mathematics and computing. The program has been designed in such a way that it is capable of fulfilling the requirements of various public and private sectors, e.g., finance, analytics, data science, cryptography based security and information technology, and hence is expected to give good job opportunities to the students.

IIT Indore Admission 2025 is open for M.Tech based on GATE scores . Eligible candidates can apply for IIT Indore M.Tech admission 2025 from August 28 to September 26 at goaps.iitr.ac.in. The exam will be conducted on Feb 1, 2, 15, and 16, 2025.

• IIT JAM 2025 exam date is Feb 2, 2025 for MSc courses. The registrations will be open from Sept 3 to Oct 11, 2024.

IIT Indore Ph.D Admission Criteria

Applicants would be admitted based on their scores in master’s / bachelor’s and entrance exams. Upon selection, Indian applicants would be called for an interview round and/or a screening test. 

International applicants would be called for an online written test/interview round based on their scores in TOEFL / IELTS / GATE.

Candidates must keep the following documents ready during the interview process for the document verification process. Admission Categories: 

• Fellowship Awardee (FA) – An awardee from funding agencies like CSIR, UGC, NBHM, DST. Or a JRF/SRF project staff working in a funded project in IIT Indore.
• Teaching Assistantship (TA) – Scholarship under MHRD guidelines.
• Sponsored without Institute Scholarship (SW) – Sponsored candidate from R&D organisation or Industry. 
• Institute Staff (IS) – Staff member of IIT Indore.
• Defence (DF) – Personnel serving Armed forces without institute scholarship.
• College Teacher (CT) – Permanent Teacher of Sponsoring College/University without scholarship

A candidate has to submit the signed soft-copy of the application along with State Bank Collect receipt, recent photograph and self- attested relevant Certificates. For SW candidates:

The fee structure for Phd admission at IIT Indore for 2023 onwards is as follows category wise:

IIT Indore Ph.D Duration

This is a 4 year full-time degree, where the 1st year is all about coursework. The second year is for deciding on research topics and tools for conducting the research. The applicants in the third and fourth year take forth their research and are supposed to submit it by the end of 4th year. Along with thesis submission, there is also a viva conducted by a professor to approve the thesis of the student.

IIT Indore Phd Stipend

The Phd applicants in the first 2 years are offered INR 30,000 per month as part of the stipend for research. While the 3rd and 4th year students are offered INR 34,000 per month. This amount is set by UGC and applicants who qualify for JRF are only offered this amount.

Ques. How are interviews conducted for IIT Indore Phd admission?

Ans. The interviews are being conducted online for IIT Indore Phd admission 2022. The interviews are online for both Indian and international applicants. The Department of Computer Science & Engineering has proposed to conduct interviews via Google Meet.

Ques. Which research areas available for IIT Indore Phd in Civil Engineering?

Ans. There are two types of research areas available in Phd at IIT Indore in Civil Engineering Department are as follows:

• Structural Engineering: Concrete Technology, Steel Concrete Composite Structures, Structural health monitoring and reliability.
• Hydrology & Water Resources Engineering: Climate change and water management., Glaciology, Mountain Hydrology, Mountain Hazards, High-altitude meteorology.

Ques. Can I apply for two specializations in Phd at IIT Indore?

Ans. Yes, an applicant can apply for two specializations of Phd at IIT Indore. He/she will have to apply separately for each specialization chosen. In this case the applicant will be submitting two applications separately.

Ques. Is there a written test conducted along with an interview for IIT Indore Phd admission?

Ans. Some departments of IIT Indore offering Phd conduct an additional written test along with the interview round before final verdict on admission. This decision is up to the discretion of the concerned Department. Also not all departments conduct written tests.

Ques. How can foreign applicants apply for IIT Indore Phd admission?

Ans. There is a separate application portal for foreign applicants - Common Application Portal. These students have to submit their applications with the required documents and an application fee of USD 30 through RTGS. The selected applicants would get an intimation on their dashboard and consequently will be called for an interview round.

Ques. Is TA / DA extended for visiting IIT Indore for Phd interview?

Ans. No, there is no TA or DA extended by IIT Indore for attending Phd interview round. This year applicants have to appear for the interviews online only because of COVID-19 restrictions in the country.

The Government of India launched the Quality improvement Programme in the year 1970. One of the main objectives of the programme is to upgrade the expertise and capabilities of the faculty members of the degree level institutions in the country. The programme is now being implemented and monitored by All India Council for Technical Education. In “Quality Improvement Programme” only sponsored teachers are eligible for admission to both Master’s & Doctoral Degree Programmes, with the aim to enable the teachers to acquire Master’s & Doctoral degrees and imbibe in them a culture of research and better teaching educational capabilities by exposing them to the environment of the institutes of study.

QIP Centre at IIT Indore was established in the year 2018-19 for the fulfillment of the objectives of the QIP scheme like quality, relevance, excellence and equity in technical education in the country. The QIP Centre, IIT Indore currently offers admission to PhD program in 11 different departments which includes Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electrical Engineering (EE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Civil Engineering (CE) and Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering (BSBE), Metallurgy Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS), Astronomy Astrophysics and Space Engineering (AASE), Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics departments. Under this program faculty members from different engineering institutions have got registered during the year 2020-21, 2021-22 & 2022-23. I had given an interview at IIT Guwahati and IISER Pune in the June session. In IISER Pune, they asked questions from linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, real analysis. They are as follows.

• What is the minimal polynomial. What is the characteristic polynomial.
• What are the relationship between minimal polynomial and charactestic polynomial. Can you proof those relationships between minimal polynomial and charactestic polynomial. In ordinary differential equations, they asked questions from uniqueness and existence theorem. Statement and example of uniqueness theorem.
• What is the reimann integration. They asked some examples of reimann integration.
• What is the uniform convergence in sequence of functions.
• Is continuity implement the uniform convergence of sequence and series of functions. Can you proof it .

During IIT Guwahati, they asked questions from partial differential equations.

Hey, I have given Interview at UNIVERSITY OF DELHI. The interview questions are follows: First we have to make a presentation on any of our favourite topic in not more than 8 minutes. My topic was “Fundamental Theorem of Finite Abelian Groups” The questions asked are as follows: 1) What are elementary divisors? Give an example. 2) Given two finite Abelian Groups G and H. Hey, I have given an interview at IISER MOHALI. The questions are as follows: 1) What is the unit group of Z_n? (in terms of n) 2) What are the maximal ideals of Z? (I said of type pZ where p is prime) 3) Prove that Maximal ideals of Z are only of type pZ where p is prime? 4) Consider the complex polynomial ring C[x]. What are its irreducible elements? I have appeared for BITS Pilani Interview and have been selected in it as well. I don’t remember the questions, but they were just 3-4 and one of them was what is the Nilpotent Group? Interview was very easy.

I have also appeared for the NBHM Phd Scholarship Interview and have been selected.

The questions are as follows:

• If the order of a group G is >3, then find two automorphisms of G.
• Can we always find a real polynomial f(x) such that f(1) =2 and f(4) =7? What if f(a) = b and f(c) =d (a,b,c,d are all real)? [Hint: Vandermonde Matrix]
• Can we always find a real polynomial f(x,y) such that f(1,2) =2 and f(4,7) =9? What if f(a,b) = c and f(d,e) =f (a,b,c,d,e,f are all real)? [Hint: Chinese Remainder Theorem]
• Given a continuous function f:R to R satisfying f(x+y)=f(x)+f(y). Find f(x). Justify.

I have also appeared for IMSc Phd Interview . The questions are as follows:

• Given a group G, H is an index 3 subgroup of G. Then either H is a normal subgroup or there exists a subgroup N in H which is normal in G and has index 2 in H.
• Suppose {a_n} is a sequence of real numbers, fix L in R(real numbers). Assume that for every subsequence {a_n_k} there exists a further subsequence {a_n_k_p} which converges to L. Show that {a_n} is convergent to L.

First they asked my preference and I said abstract algebra. Then they asked two questions from the nbhm phd written test. One is prove the formula ” number of idempotent elements in Zn = 2^d” And another one from linear algebra and I answered the question in written exam wrong but still they said to try there… Then they ask

• What is class equation?
• What is the cardinality of center of a group of order 27? Explain it by the help of class equation.
• Number of Homomorphism from S3 to Z6? Explain.
• Let A,B are closed sets in R. Consider the set dist(A,B) defined by {|x-y|:x in A,y in B} = 0 then what can you say about the intersection of the sets A and B.
• One question from topology which I didn’t remember.

Suggestions: If you are appearing nbhm interview try to read the proofs of the formula we generally use and prepare your nbhm exam questions..all of them And whatever your preference can be…they ask question from real analysis and topology.

Hello Sir…my suggestions are One may clear the competitive exams but clearing interview is completely different. We need to have good knowledge of topics. Must read standard books (including proofs) like Bartle for Analysis, Gallian for Algebra, etc. Avoid random guess because one wrong answer would expose all your weaknesses. If you don’t know the answer them simply say I can try try and after try if could not get answer then say that you don’t know the answer… Logical implications must be sound.

IITM IDRP and IIT Indore MS Cse Interview Experience

I hope everyone's day is going well, this is my first post talking about an experience regarding research interviews: The interview management was insanely smooth, and was very well conducted, very surprised with managing so many students with clashing dates (I also had clash in dates).First we had to wait for our turn in a meet.

My interview was around 11:30 am, and I had to go to another meet link from the waiting one. First I was introduced by a PhD student (I think coz his name wasn't showing, rather an ID). After the basic greetings I introduced myself, regarding my btech degree, my background, my subjects during beech and, gate score both Cs and da. I was then asked why the 1 year drop and answered it, I thought professors were satisfied.

Then the professor came in and started asking questions regarding computer vision and functions of open CV, some other nitbits about edge filter and other filters. Then went into CNN and asked about pooling, and dropout reg, which were quite straightforward. After that they started asking about ANN. The last question was (I wasn't sure what the answer should be, as I thought it was quite trivial) difference between ANN and CNN. I answered something and I tried to make it satisfactory.

Then I was asked about Digital Twin (project based questions) and its uses, along with certain question about it's history and industrial usage. I did bring up usage of Finite Element Methods and its differential equations are required to solve them, but they didn't ask me on that, which was a very big relief for me.

Overall the experience was good and I hope it helps others as well.

IIT Indore interview was more DSA based where I had to code by hand BFS and DFS. Afterwards talked about shortest path finding with help of BFS and cycle presence check using DFS. The was a brief question about knapsack0/1 (DP) and the last was can we build a unique BST using pre-order and postorder traversals(we can build only if it was FULL BST but we cannot have unique as the order is not fixed) and in another case inorder and postorder(here unique is possible). It went around for 20 25 mins.

Both were greatly important to me. Comment my mistakes and have a lively discussion.
