This kind of descriptive paragraph will include the events and characteristics related to a person’s life. This usually includes a biographical sketch of a person (it can be he, she, or they), covering all the major events and achievements from birth to the present.

Famous film director, Vijay Bhat was so much impressed by him that he named a film `Gunj Uthi Shehnai’. The song ‘Dil ka Khiiona Toot Gaya’ became a nationwide superhit. Bismillah Khan was recognized and honored by many countries. He gave his performances in the USA, UK and at various places. He was totally devoted to Benaras and the river Ganga. 1 . THE BLOND GUITAR

My most valuable possession is an old, slightly warped blond guitar—the first

instrument I taught myself how to play. It’s nothing fancy, just a Madeira folk

guitar, all scuffed and scratched and fingerprinted. At the top is a bramble of

copper-wound strings, each one hooked through the eye of a silver tuning key.

The strings are stretched down a long, slim neck, its frets tarnished, the wood

worn by years of fingers pressing chords and picking notes. The body of the

Madeira is shaped like an enormous yellow pear, one that was slightly damaged in

kitchen chairs near the stove. On the wall, just over the table, hung a long

horizontal mirror that sloped to a ship’s prow at each end and was lined in

cherry wood. It took up the whole wall, and drew every object in the kitchen to

itself. The walls were a fiercely speckled whitewash, so often re-whitened by

my father in slack seasons that the paint looked as if it had been squeezed and

cracked into the walls. A large electric bulb hung down the center of the

kitchen at the end of a chain that had been hooked into the ceiling; the old

gas ring and key still jutted out of the wall like antlers. In the corner, next

to the toilet, was the sink at which we washed, and the square tube in which my

mother did our clothes. Above it, tacked to the shelf on which were pleasantly

ranged square, blue-bordered white sugar and spice jars, hung calendars from

the National Bank and the Workmen’s Circle; receipts for the payment of

insurance premiums, and household bills on a spindle; two little boxes engraved

with Hindi letters.

INSPIRING TEACHER

There are some inspiring teachers in my life. But the one whom I am going to tell you about is really a great teacher for me. His name is Shyam Sagar. He was my lecturer in Sanskrit Literature, University of Delhi. He was the third person

who has the highest knowledge of Sanskrit linguistic in the world. His

specialty was in calligraphy and philosophy. He doesn’t have a high education

title. In fact, he was a truck driver in Tamil Nadu before he was appointed to

be a guest lecturer in University of Delhi. When we saw him for the first time,

he didn’t look like a lecturer. He was carrying a black plastic bag and wore a

simple outfit. What impressed us at that time was that he was talking as if we

had watched an English movie! He didn’t have many rules in his class but he

knew how to attract us to study more and more. Every time we studied

linguistic, he let us feel and try the words, so we had no doubt in pronouncing

them. He was able to let us understand phrases matching to situations and Tamil culture. His humble heart and persistence made us respect him more. As a result, we always tried our best in his class because we did not want to

disappoint him. I have been admired by his attitude towards his students, and I

try to model him, yet I’m still learning.

4. MY FAVOURITE PLACE

My favorite place which is important to me is my countryside house. I have very bright impressions and memories related to it. That is the place where I have grown up, met my friends and where I have spent almost all my life.

It is a big house with a yard. In summer, there are a lot of flowers which make

the outlook beautiful In the backyard, there is a “place where I love to

spend time, lying in hammock and dreaming under the tree.

Inside the house, there is a kitchen, a big living room, where you can invite guests, friends and chat with them, watch TV and relax. Next to the living room there are rooms, which are always sunlit during daytime, so you wake up with a very good mood in the morning. The house has a very homely atmosphere I will always like this place, because I have many good, pleasant memories and feelings about it.

5. MY HOMETOWN

grew up in Shimla which is located in the state of Himachal Pradesh in the

northern part of India. Large, old oak trees and green lawns, surrounded by

hills covered in pine trees formed my neighborhood. The streets were quiet,

with only the sound of birds singing and some cars passing every once in a

while. During the cold, snowy winters, most people stayed inside, and one could

smell wood burning in fireplaces and see smoke coming out of chimneys. In

summer, one could see people walking dogs or jogging, smell cut-fresh grass,

and see squirrels jumping from tree to tree. My hometown made me feel secure

and comfortable. Now, I usually visit Shimla once a year. Not a lot has changed

except now there are more people, more traffic, and more places to go, such as

shopping malls and restaurants. I feel nostalgic when I think about Shimla.

6. MY LOVING SISTER

has a family, but only few are lucky to have an inspiring, strong and caring

sister like mine. My sister’s name is Radhika Kapoor. My sister is currently staying

with her friend’s family in Patel Nagar as she is pursuing an advanced academic

program. She works her brain off to meet deadlines, produce new ideas, and on

top of that she tries to fit time in her busy schedule every night to call or

text us. For , engineering, she has

sacrificed so much to be the best. Although engineering doesn’t define her,

what she loves about it is that it’s a challenge she has to face. Radhika has

everything that a little sister would have wanted. She’s understanding,

intelligent, funny, and charismatic. Radhika brings solution to every problem.

regardless the situation. My sister is my teacher. She guides me through my

life. Radhika always advises me on what to be avoided and what would bring

benefits to me. Radhika is sincere to everyone and herself. I love my sister

and no one can do anything. to separate us. I hope that someday I can take good

care of her as she has cared for me.

MY GRANDMOTHER

person I will always remember is my grandmother, because she was the most

amazing person I had ever known. My grandmother was a person everyone wanted to

be around, she always put a smile on our faces without even trying. She had the

finniest laugh and was always cracking jokes which was probably the reason why

we were always laughing. My grandma would help anyone no matter hat the situation was even if it meant going

out of her way to help. She was very caring and always had a welcoming home for

us; my cousins and I always liked staying with her on the weekends.

My grandma was like my best friend. I could talk to her about anything, and she

knew exactly how to solve my problems. She also used to make the best idlis and

payasam. I always looked forward to Diwali walking into her house, smelling all

the warm food, waiting for us. I will always cherish all the memories I had

with my grandma. She raised me to be a better person and to look at things in a

positive way. She was a strong, loving, caring, funny woman and had many things

to give to others. An one who met her will cherish forever.

FRIEND-MY CHAMP

 Mohan has been a good friend of mine for some

years now. Our friendship goes all the way hack to when we first met in primary

school. Although we were very young and seemed to not have too much in common,

we somehow found some reasons to bond and create a friendship. It is a

friendship that has become stronger over the time and through our shared life

experiences. He is my exact opposite in terms of physical attributes. He is

taller than me with dark hair and black eyes. He also has better fashion sense

than I have with his standard jean pants and black shirt. Black is his

favorite color, so it tends to show up in most of his clothes. He is also

more sociable than I am. Because of his talent for drawing, he often attracts

people to look at his 3D designs on his laptop. He has a creative mind, so he

has a lot of projects that he works on whenever he has some free time. He is

the friend that I come to when I feel troubled or pressured. It is his voice of

reason that helps me calm down and reminds me to remain composed at all times.

He is my best friend because he cares about me and works on our friendship with

me. I can only hope that we will be friends forever.

9. PLEASURES OF WATCHING A

combines the pleasures of radio and cinema. It has become the most popular

means of entertainment as it provides variety of entertainment at a minimum

cost. Every home has a TV nowadays. The facility of cable network has increased

the pleasures of television. Now we have hundreds of channels available to us.

Each person can watch programs of his choice. Instant and live coverage of

sports items, films and film-based programs, TV serials and soap operas are

the sort of programs which are liked the most. Television watching is

entertaining as well as informative. Programs on current affairs enlighten

us. However, like every invention of science, TV has darker aspects also.

Excessive TV watching proves harmful. So, let us be moderate in enjoying the

pleasures of television.

                               REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATION

our country celebrated its Republic Day on 26th January. i could not go to India Gate lawns to watch the parade of

different states. Therefore, I had to sit in front of my TV I was surprised at

the smart uniforms and the enthusiasm of different battalions of ail the three

branches of the forces. They were followed by the young brave children who

seemed to be very happy on the elephants as all of them had received bravery

awards. The tableau of the states was the main attraction as the colorful artists

presented the dances of their states with a message. The people gathered there,

were impressed by the school children who presented a number of items. I also

wanted to join them. Afterward, I realised that on TV I was only able to

Answer: A.R. Rahman (Allah Rakha Rahman) is an Indian composer, singer, songwriter, music producer, musician and philanthropist who was born in Chennai on 6 January 1967. Rahman was earlier known as A.S. Dileep Kumar before he converted from Hinduism to Islam. He is a graduate from Trinity college, Oxford Univeristy. His extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname of ‘the Mozart of Madras’. He first debuted with the movie ‘Roja’.

He is famous in integrating Indian classical music with electronic music, world music and traditional orchestral arrangements. He is the recipient of the Padmashri and the Padma Vibhushan awards. He has won two Oscars and a golden globe too. He is a notable humanitarian and philanthropist. He does a lot of charity work too; he donates and raises money for a number of causes and charities. Men like him are hard to find.

Question 6. One day you were commuting in a DTC bus. Unfortunately, your wallet was left at home. The conductor gave you the ticket for free. You are moved by his gesture. Describe him in 100-150 words. Answer: One day I was commuting on a DTC bus. Unfortunately, my wallet was left at home. I had no money to buy the ticket and it was useless to plead before the conductor. Every moment was adding to my anxiety, lest I should be caught by the ticket checker and further consequences. The conductor asked me to take the ticket but after knowing the truth he offered me the ticket. I looked at him as if I was asking the reason and he just smiled.

The conductor was a conscientious and kind-hearted person. He understood my problem and so did not fine. I deboarded the bus thanking him from the deep of my heart. I was moved by the behaviour of the conductor and it had been an unforgettable experience of my life.

Question 7. Write a short descriptive paragraph on the famous Indian scientist Sir CV Raman in 100-150 words on the basis of the following inputs.

Answer: Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman born on 7 November 1888, in the former Madras Province of India (presently Tamil Nadu) was an Indian physician who carried out ground-breaking work in the field of light scattering. He discovered that when light traverses a transparent material. Some of the deflected light changes wavelength. This phenomena of “Raman effect” earned him the 1930 Nobel Prize for Physics.

Raman was honoured with a large number of honorary doctorates and memberships of scientific societies. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society early in his career in 1924 and knighted in 1929. He later resigned from the fellowship in 1968 for reasons unrecorded, the only Indian FRS ever to do so.

In 1954, India honoured him with its highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna and celebrates National Science Day on 28 February of every’ year to commemorate the discovery of the Raman effect in 1928. Raman breathed his last on 21 November 1970.

Answer: Kiran Mazumdar Shaw is an Indian billionare entrepreneur and also the chairperson and managing director of Biocon United (a Biotechnology company) and is also the chairperson of IIM Bengaluru. Born to Gujarati parents in Bengaluru. She did her schooling from Bishop’s Cotton Girls’ High School and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in zoology from Bangalore University. She hoped to go to a medical school but did not obtain a scholarship.

Her father, Rasendra Mazumdar was the head brewmaster at United Breweries. He suggested her to pursue a course in fermentation science to be trained as a brewmaster which was a very non-traditional course for a woman. Mazumdar went to the Federation University in Australia to study Malting and Brewing in 1974, the only woman enrolled in the brewing course and earned the Master’s degree in brewery in 1975.

She joined the Biocon Company as a trainee manager for a brief period at Cork Ireland and then returned to India to start her own business. And the rest is history. She has won several national and international awards and honours today. She has been listed by Forbes as one of the most. powerful women in the world at 77th and 71st positions in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

While describing a place there are some important steps :

• Break the description into 2-3 paragraphs.
• Each paragraph should have a topic sentence.
• Describe one aspect of the place in each paragraph.
• It is important to ensure continuity in paragraphs.
• If the description has to be written in one paragraph, then include all the details briefly.

Write a description of the place in 100-150 words. Answer: Jaipur, also referred to as the Pink City. The Hawa Mahal here is made of Pink stone. It is the capital of Rajasthan. It is a colourful city with monuments, good food and lots of shopping. By road from Delhi it is about 4 hours drive. By air just about 45 minutes from Delhi. It is a hot place and the best time to visit is December to February. The rest of the months it will be hot. The palaces constructed by erstwhile kings are marvels of architecture. If one has to see all the monuments it will take no less than 3 days.

Apart from forts, shopping in Jaipur is exciting. Things are reasonably priced, marble carvings and objects made out of stone are famous in Jaipur. The typical Rajasthani cuisine is elaborate and is served with lot of butter and ghee. Some of the dishes are dal, bhatti churma, kachori, etc. The art of tie and dye is very famous in Rajasthan. Fabric, dress material and sarees on which this technique is used are liked by women.

Question 3. Srinagar with its Dal lake, the snow clad mountain peaks and the Shalimar garden is nothing but a paradise on the earth. You visited this beautiful city sometime back. Write an account of the place in 100-150 words. Answer: Kashmir is the paradise on the earth. It is a beautiful place, so scenic with snow clad mountains, beautiful lakes, flowers and fruits all around. Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir, is connected by air with all major metros of India. There is no train facility at Kashmir. The nearest railway station is Katra or Jammu. There are many hotels where one can stay.

In the Dal lake there are houseboats called as Shikaras in which one can stay. Words cannot describe the beauty of this place. One can see apple trees laden with apples. Jetlag, itchy feet, hit the road, time table, on the home stretch, call it a day, book in advance, travel over, travel through, travel light, any port in a storm, stopover, etc. Answer: We decided to go to Thailand last month. I was too excited to think of what it would be like. We booked the tickets and when the time came, packed our things. When we landed at Thailand airport after a journey of about five hours, I had jet legs but soon forgot it seeing the beauty all around. We checked in the hotel and rested for some time. It was a wonderful day and we enjoyed coconut milk. We hired bikes and toured half of the island relishing the local life that was so lively and full of activity.

On our way, we tasted delicacies of the local cuisine. Mostly it was spicy food. We visited tropical jungles and witness the beauty and splendour of nature. We were overwhelmed by the serenity and beauty of the place. Soon the time to go back arrived. It was a sad feeling to think of leaving this extraordinary calmness. It was the best journey of my life.

Question 5. The city of Delhi, capital of India, is a wonderful amalgamation of tradition and modernity. With places like Red Fort and Jama Masjid on one hand, India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan on the other hand, it is a city worth visiting. You happened to go around the city last month. Write a description of the city in 100-150 words. Answer: Delhi, the capital city of India, is a wonderful amalgamation of tradition and modernity. There are many places to visit in this city. It is the most well-connected city in this country. There is a variety of hotels and guest houses where people who visit this city can stay. If one wishes to visit all the places in this city then one has to stay here for at least 3-4 days. There is Red fort, Jama Masjid, Kutub Minar, India Gate and many other places to visit and see. There is shopping to do in Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh and Connaught Place.

• Nearest airport is at Jabalpur (165 km)
• Nearest town and railwayhead is Umaria (30 km). The other railway stations are Jabalpur (165 km), Katni (102 km) and Satna (120 km).
• There are varied government and private options for accommodation in Tala village that adjoins the park.
• The park is open to visitors from October to June. But the best season for viewing wildlife is November to April.
• Getting around : Maruti Gypsys are used to explore the park. The reservation of these can be done at the Project Tiger office or the hotels where one is staying. The tour is conducted by a guide and in the park one must adhere to the allocated route.

The Bandhavgarh National Park is set amongst the Vindhya Hills and is in the district of Shadol in Madhya Pradesh. It was declared a national park in 1968 and today covers an area of 437 sq. km. The park derives its name from the most prominent hill fort of the area, which is (mythologically) said to have been given by Lord Rama to his brother Laxman to keep a watch on Lanka (Bandhav = Brother, Garh = Fort). Answer: Bandhavgarh National Park is situated in the state Of Madhya Pradesh. The nearest airport is Jabalpur. It is in the Vindhya Hills, in the district’of Shadol in MP. In the year 1968 it was declared as a National Park. This park has a large biodiversity. The park has a large breeding population of leopards and various species of deer. It is declared as the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in 1993. It covers an area of 694 sq. km.

The best time to visit this place to enjoy the wildlife is November to April. There is a variety of accommodation available including Govt, guest houses and private hotels. Maruti Gypsies are used to go around the park. One can book these in advance either from the Project Tiger Office or from the hotel where one is staying.

Question 7. You recently visited the Children’s Park, a favourite place for all children, in your city. Write a description of the Park in 100-150 words. Answer: Children’s Park is the place all children love to go. The park in our city of Delhi is huge. There are about 4 play areas with different types of playthings. The area for small children has swings, see-saw and slides. Then there is a ground where children can play games like badminton, volleyball etc. There is a football court as well. Facing the India Gate is a Tennis court.

Apart form all these there are green areas for parents to play with their children. Families come here for outdoor activities and enjoy picnics especially during winters. There is a provision for cooking as well. There are many trees. As a result during summers, this park remains cool in the day. A park, which, all children should definitely visit.

Any description of an event should include factual details. While writing about an event the following points should be kept in mind.

• As the event is being described after its completion, one has to use past tense.

Ans. Today, I found an old Barbie toy while cleaning the room. She used to be my favourite toy, and my best friend. I was introverted back then, and so I had difficulty in making friends. However, I had her so I never felt lonely. The toy is a blonde-haired Barbie with a baby pink-coloured frock and bright pink high heeled shoes. She has adorned a pink bracelet and a pink belt, topped with a beaded, silver necklace. Her rough, dirty hair is tied in a ponytail. Her body is a little dirty. She had white sunglasses too but I could not find them. I was overcome with nostalgia when I found her today. I remember how I used to carry her along wherever I went. My best friend Radhika and I would bring our dolls and play with them. We would serve tea to the dolls, make them study and play and even put them to bed. I will always cherish the memories I made with my Barbie doll.

Q2. Your class teacher is leaving the school and moving to another country. The next school day is their last school day. You made a card for them. Describe the card in 100-120 words. 

Ans. Tomorrow is the last day when I would see my class teacher, Ms. Shalini Malhotra. She is also my English teacher. So, I decided to write her a poem, and to decorate the poem, like a card. Finally, I ended up with a small card containing a short but sweet poem about me thanking her and reliving the fun memories we share together. The first page of the card is designed by using watercolours. Ms. Shalini loves roses and the colour blue. So, I drew roses on a blue shaded background made by using watercolours. On the last page, I wished her good luck for the new journey ahead. I have also bought a small bunch of multi-coloured roses that I plan to gift her tomorrow. She has enriched my vocabulary with many new words and also made me an avid reader. I will always be grateful to her. I hope she likes the card and she keeps it with her forever. 

Q3. You went to Paris with your friends. Describe the place in 100-120 words.

Ans. Last month i.e. October, I went to France or Paris to be specific, with my friends Jasmine, Maya, and Sarah. We had a blast exploring the city of lights. The weather was appropriate for venturing out and so, we did a lot of sight-seeing. True to its name, the streets of the city along with its most famous national monument, the Eiffel Tower, are lit with beautiful, glittering and shimmering lights. Paris is also called the Fashion Capital, and we could clearly see the evidence of that. The stores offered racks and racks of the most trendy and latest designs and fabrics. We shopped to our hearts’ content. The cuisine was unique and scrumptious. We also explored the history of France’s capital by visiting Notre Dame. We shopped quiet a few things like dresses, fragrances and souvenirs for our loved ones. I am waiting for another opportunity to visit the splendid place.

Q4. You go to the local library everyday. Describe the place in 100-120 words.

Ans. Recently, I got a membership to the local library. The name of the library is – ReadMore Library. It is located two blocks away from my house. It is a brightly coloured building on the ground floor only. In the window, it has books of the latest and popular writers to catch the eye of ongoing cars and pedestrians. When I take the first step inside the building, I am greeted with neatly piled stacks of books, the sight of people immersed in books, and the pleasant smell of coffee, tea, and books. It provides beverages like coffee and tea but if a person ruins a book then the membership is suspended for two weeks and he or she has to pay fees of 50 rupees. The aroma of coffee mixes up with the fragrance of paper and creates a cosy vibe. The dim yellow lights, a cup of my favourite vanilla latte and my favourite read is my idea of a perfect time. I am immensely relaxed and rejuvenated after a visit here.

Q5. You spent an entire day without electricity. Describe the experience in 100-120 words.

Ans. I cannot imagine life without electricity. It is a necessity these days. During my summer vacations, we experienced a nightmare when we had to spend almost 30 hours without electricity. I had gone to Delhi to my grandparents’ house for summer holidays. It was a hot day of the month of June. We woke up in the middle of the night, our throats dry with thirst and the body was full of sweat. We realized that the electricity supply was disrupted and our parents assured us that it would resume by morning. My grandmother suggested that we could sleep on the roof which was airy but to our dismay, we were greeted by a host of mosquitoes! We could not get peace there too so we returned to the rooms which were like a hot oven. In the morning there was no water supply and so we could not even bathe. Everyone was just worried about the resumption of the supply. My aunt and my mother cooked some food for us but no one wanted to eat due to the heat. My uncle took us for some kulfi which gave some relief. By evening, we were drained out and prayed to god to bring the fans to life. However, it was not so and we had to go to bed without it. We were so exhausted and just fell on the bed lifelessly. It was the most tormenting day of my life.

Q6. Today was the first day of college. You made a companion today. Describe the companion in 100-120 words.

Ans . I was nervous, it being my first day of college. I was aware of the ragging done by the seniors in the garb of introduction. I was sad because none of my school friends had enrolled in the same college. So I was solitary and keen on making new buddies. As I entered the class a boy wearing spectacles looked at me. He was sitting alone so I sat next to him. We exchanged pleasantries and as both were solitary, we clicked a new bond. Rajat and I exchanged our numbers and chatted about our previous school, hobbies and career goals. After classes we went to the canteen and had juice and sandwiches. Rajat was a jovial and kind person. He complimented me on my positive attitude and friendly nature. I liked him and we talked endlessly. We did not know that this was the start of a lifelong bond.

Ans. When I was 5 years old, I went to LKG Class. I had a friend named Bani who lived some houses away. We went to school by the same bus and shared the bus stop. I admired Bani for her intelligence, warmth and kind heart. Her birthday parties were fun and I looked forward to being a part of them. We would play musical chairs, statue games, hopscotch and pass the parcel. His pet dogs would keep us entertained all through the party. I loved getting the return gifts which used to be very attractively packed. I would get nice gifts for Bani like posters, music cassettes and sprays. She would also attend my birthday parties and we both were a part of our growing up years. Just like childhood is the best part of one’s life, childhood friends are the truest buddies one can have.

Q8. You attended a Halloween costume party. Describe the event in 100-120 words.

Ans . Yesterday was 31st October, the day of my favourite festival, Halloween. However, in India, no one celebrates this occasion. So, one of my friend’s mother decided to organise a Halloween costume party for our entertainment. I made a pretty witch costume using scrap cloth material. It had patches of black and different shades of grey sewn together. I made a hat with an old chart paper and tied a black ribbon on it. I also made a prop with an old broom and attached a stick to it. This made my outfit look authentic. The hosts had decorated their house with various lights and spooky decorations. The Halloween-themed decorations, games, stories, movies, ambience music, and snacks created the perfect Halloween atmosphere. All of my friends attended the party in different, creative costumes. The game I loved the most was Solve the Mystery, in which we had to solve the mystery behind a haunting before the time ran out. When time ran out, my friend’s father, who was dressed as a monster, chased us down. We had a blast.

Ans. I had been living in the same house for 15 years. The house located at number 325, Sector-15, Chandigarh, was not perfect in design and not at all my dream house, but it was still my home. I have some very amazing memories of the time spent there. It comprised six bedrooms, one guest room, one lobby, one dining room, one drawing room, one entrance hall, a wide verandah at both back and front, one kitchen, pantry, store room, attic, six bathrooms, and three floors. I spent my entire childhood and majority of my teenage years there. I had spent the most precious and joyous time in the house that had yellow but slightly stained and dirty walls, and a brick-red roof. We would have amazing birthday parties with all my school friends surrounding me. My cousins would smear the cake on my cheeks and we would all enjoy a lot. I can still feel the memories flooding into my brain. I will miss the old house very much. Thank you for giving me shelter and a space for making memories with my family.

Ans. It was my birthday on the 14th of December, but I had been so overloaded with work that I did not realise that it had arrived. To my utter surprise, My best friend Janice organised a surprise birthday party for me. When I went to my apartment and opened the door with my keys, I stepped into the room. I tried to turn on the lights but the switch would not work. Then suddenly, lights were lit and all my friends screamed and wished me “happy birthday”. The sound filled the room. I almost shrieked. I looked around the room. The room was so dark before that I had not noticed the balloons, festoons and hangings all around. My friends were wearing birthday hats and had wide, bright smiles on their faces. There was a black forest cake on the living room table. I started laughing. 3) Expository Essays: Presentation of the Facts

It can be done by comparison and contrast, definition, example, the analysis of cause and effect, etc.

4) Persuasive Essays: Convince Me

When you are assigned a descriptive essay, you’ll normally be given a specific prompt or choice of prompts. They will often ask you to describe something from your own experience.

Use figurative language

Figurative language consists of devices like metaphor and simile that use words in non-literal ways to create a memorable effect. This is essential in a descriptive essay; it’s what gives your writing its creative edge and makes your description unique.

Take the following description of a park.

This tells us something about the place, but it’s a bit too literal and not likely to be memorable.

If we want to make the description more likely to stick in the reader’s mind, we can use some figurative language.

Here we have used a simile to compare the park to a face and the trees to facial hair. This is memorable because it’s not what the reader expects; it makes them look at the park from a different angle.

You don’t have to fill every sentence with figurative language, but using these devices in an original way at various points throughout your essay will keep the reader engaged and convey your unique perspective on your subject.

Use your senses

Another key aspect of descriptive writing is the use of sensory details. This means referring not only to what something looks like, but also to smell, sound, touch, and taste.

Obviously not all senses will apply to every subject, but it’s always a good idea to explore what’s interesting about your subject beyond just what it looks like.

Even when your subject is more abstract, you might find a way to incorporate the senses more metaphorically, as in this descriptive essay about fear.

Choose the right words

Writing descriptively involves choosing your words carefully. The use of effective adjectives is important, but so is your choice of adverbs , verbs , and even nouns.

It’s easy to end up using clichéd phrases—“cold as ice,” “free as a bird”—but try to reflect further and make more precise, original word choices. Clichés provide conventional ways of describing things, but they don’t tell the reader anything about your unique perspective on what you’re describing.

Try looking over your sentences to find places where a different word would convey your impression more precisely or vividly. Using a thesaurus can help you find alternative word choices.

• My cat runs across the garden quickly and jumps onto the fence to watch it from above.
• My cat crosses the garden nimbly and leaps onto the fence to survey it from above.

However, exercise care in your choices; don’t just look for the most impressive-looking synonym you can find for every word. Overuse of a thesaurus can result in ridiculous sentences like this one:

• My feline perambulates the allotment proficiently and capers atop the palisade to regard it from aloft.

An example of a short descriptive essay, written in response to the prompt “Describe a place you love to spend time in,” is shown below.

On Sunday afternoons I like to spend my time in the garden behind my house. The garden is narrow but long, a corridor of green extending from the back of the house, and I sit on a lawn chair at the far end to read and relax. I am in my small peaceful paradise: the shade of the tree, the feel of the grass on my feet, the gentle activity of the fish in the pond beside me.

My cat crosses the garden nimbly and leaps onto the fence to survey it from above. From his perch he can watch over his little kingdom and keep an eye on the neighbours. He does this until the barking of next door’s dog scares him from his post and he bolts for the cat flap to govern from the safety of the kitchen.

With that, I am left alone with the fish, whose whole world is the pond by my feet. The fish explore the pond every day as if for the first time, prodding and inspecting every stone. I sometimes feel the same about sitting here in the garden; I know the place better than anyone, but whenever I return I still feel compelled to pay attention to all its details and novelties—a new bird perched in the tree, the growth of the grass, and the movement of the insects it shelters…

Sitting out in the garden, I feel serene. I feel at home. And yet I always feel there is more to discover. The bounds of my garden may be small, but there is a whole world contained within it, and it is one I will never get tired of inhabiting.

Secondly, it aimed at creating interest in science among the students. In the fair, more than 12 items were on display. Most of these were working models. The model of the steam engine was wonderful. Then there were charts that showed how an atomic chain reaction takes place. The model of the space rocket was fascinating. The students who ran the different stalls explained things with confidence. Apart from the students, people from the city also visited the fair. They were impressed by it. The District Education Gillett appreciated the work done by the students and the teachers.

My first day at school – an exercise in descriptive writing.

Every child’s first day at school is always very exciting. At least, it was so in my case. I remember my first day at school very vividly. I remember it was my mother who took me to my school on my first day there.

I had a small bag in my hand. It contained an exercise book, a pencil and an eraser beside me. I actually did not need all these things but had insisted on my taking them with me. My father had already filled up the admission form and submitted it to the school Principal a number of days before. Now, I had to appear for an interview. My mother went to the school superintendent and got the admission form. She took it to the Principal. Before entering the Principal’s office, she had to wait outside for a few minutes. She sent a slip in and was soon called inside. My mother took me inside the Principal’s office. I felt a little awed as I saw a big tall lady with a dominating personality occupying a revolving chair. However, her sweet voice soon allayed my fears. She studied the admission form quickly. She expressed satisfaction regarding my age and my parents’ qualifications. She asked me to come close to her. I moved forward rather sheepishly. But she patted me on the back lovingly. Then she asked me a few very simple questions such as my name, my papa’s and mummy’s names, etc. Meanwhile, I had gathered courage and I was able to answer all the questions without much hesitation. The Principal was satisfied with my answers and she expressed her satisfaction through a broad smile. She wrote ‘yes’ at the appropriate column in the admission form. My mother along with me came out and deposited the fee with the fee clerk. I had got admission to the nursery class. It was, however, on the next day I was actually sent to attend the class. The day of my admission to the school was really an exciting one for. As soon as the bell declaring the end of the recess period goes, the students hurry to their classes and studies again start in right earnest.

Travelling by a state-owned city bus – a descriptive writing perspective.

Travelling by a state-owned bus is nothing short of torture. The buses are old and ill-main frequency of bus service is low and the conductors are unsympathetic and sometimes even buses never bother to stop’, at their assigned stops and thus cause unnecessary discom commuters. Since state buses arc the cheapest means of conveyance, they are always owerwerd even ladies and old persons have to sometimes travel standing. Due to the constant movement of passengers from the rear gate to the front gate, the sensitive toes of the standing passengers often get hurt. Hot words are exchanged now and then. The pickpockets and eve-teasers have a field day. The victims are young women and teenagers. Thus travelling by a state-owned bus may sometimes prove an ordeal.

A Quarrel At An Election Booth – Descriptive Writing in Action

  During the recent Assembly elections, I witnessed a quarrel at an election booth. The Hindu Girls College was one of the election booths. I went to cast my vote there. There was a keen contest between the candidate of Congress party and an Independent candidate. By the midnight it became clear that the independent candidate was not getting as many votes as the Congress candidate. The Independent candidate was sure to lose. So his supporters created a row. They said that the ballot boxes had been tampered with. They started raising slogans and abusing the candidate of the other party. The supporters of that party also came there and quarrelled with them. From words, they came to blows. At once a police party reached there and controlled the situation. At last, the matter was settled peacefully.

A Drowning Tragedy – A Descriptive Writing Scenario

Last month, I witnessed a drowning tragedy. Our class went on a picnic at the river bank. It was very fine mother. We sat down under the trees near the river bank. We were enjoying our picnic greatly. At about noon few boys decided to have a swim in the river. The current was fast. The others advised them not to swim. But see boys did not listen to them. They jumped into the river. They swam near the bank. But one of them suddenly is in the middle of the river where the current was very fast. He was caught in the current. He shouted help. None of us was a very good swimmer. So we all shouted for help. A few villagers came running on faring our cries. They jumped into the river. They tried their best but they could not save the boy. The boy s drowned. The joyful mood of picnic changed into a tragedy.

  Last year, I attended an MSS Camp at village Kashipur. This camp was organised by the NSS unit of our school. The aim of the camp was to educate the villagers about cleanliness and adult education. The duration of the camp was fifteen days. We found that the villagers were illiterate. We taught them how to read and I write. We met the Zamindar of the village. His name was Shihu Balm. We asked him to work for the welfare of the villagers. We taught the villagers how to keep their streets neat and clean. We went into the houses of many persons. We also met Gafur. He was a very poor villager. But he was a kind man. He offered us tea. We enjoyed our NSS camp greatly. Time passed very fast. At last, the camp came to end and we returned to our homes.

  Last Monday, the Annual Prize Distribution function of our school was organised. A big pandal was erected on the school grounds. Our Principal, staff and students were fully prepared to make the function aisleless. They had been preparing for it for a number of days. The Chief Minister of our state was the Chief Guest at the function. Many important persons of the city had also been invited. The Chief Minister reached on time. The function started with Saraswati Vandana. The Principal welcomed the chief guest and read out the annual report. After that, the chief guest distributed the prizes. All cheered the prize winners. Then the chief guest delivered a brief speech. He asked the students to work hard to make India great. In the end, the Principal thanked the Chief Guest for his visit. The function ended with the national anthem.

  Summer is the season I dislike most. June and July are the hottest months of the summer season in Delhi. The sun shines brightly scorching heat is unbearable. Hot surface winds keep blowing continually. We experienced hot waves for a week. Twenty-fifth June was the hottest day. Mercury had shot up to 41°c. People had to remain confined within their houses under fans and coolers. The farmers and labourers stopped work and lay down tinder trees. The atmosphere outside was quite close, stuffy, and suffocating. The afternoon was quite hot. Even the night was equally warm. We couldn’t have a wink of sleep due to the exceptional heat-wave conditions.

Ans:                    Independence Day Celebration as I saw on Television

It was the 54th Independence Day of India, which I decided to watch on television. On Aug 15, after paying tributes to the Father of Nation at Rajghat, the Prime Minister of India proceeded towards the Red Fort. He was given a grand guard of honour by the three contingents of NCC and defence. He shook hands with all the dignitaries and VIPs present on the lawns of the Red Fort. Then, he was taken up to the precincts of the Fort. He unfurled the Indian flag and immediately the National anthem was sung by everyone. Then the Prime Minister addressed the nation in a speech lasting forty-five minutes. The function ended with the loud Jai Hinds and everybody started to leave as soon as the Prime Minister left the premises of the Red Fort.

Ans:        HOW I FELT WHEN I REACHED THE EXAMINATION HALL LATE

On 1st March, I set out of my house for taking my examination. It was the paper of English on that day. I went to the bus stand to catch the local bus. But due to rain, the Ideal buses were not running on that day. I took a three-wheeler and asked the driver to rush me to the examination centre. But unluckily, a tyre of the three-wheeler got burst on the way. I was worried as the time for the examination was drawing near. Luckily, I saw one of my friends going on a cycle. I asked him to give me a lift. He agreed, and I sat behind him on the bicycle. But the examination centre was far away. He tried his best but I reached the examination hall half an hour late. The examination had already started. Tears came into my eyes. But the Superintendent was a kind man. He told me not to worry and admitted me to the examination hall. His kind words gave me courage and I started writing my answers. I fared well in the examination. I will always remain indebted to that kind of superintendent.

This summer we went to our grammy’s place in Agra. She is a devotee of Radhaswami. So every day, we would get up at 5 a.m. get ready for a religious discourse of an hour; pray to God and come back home at around seven. My grandmother, them would make a sumptuous breakfast and treat us with choicest mangoes. My mother would ask us to finish our school homework. Then we would be joined by our cousins and the whole of the afternoon we would play indoor games likes chess, carom and cards. In the afternoon after lunch, my grandfather would narrate his experiences of hunting which he had abandoned now and narrated stories of bravery and valour. We would sleep early as the elders sat gossiping. It was fun to be spending the time together during summer vacation.

  Travelling by the city bus in Delhi is an experience in itself. It is a rare sight to see a city Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus going empty. If somebody sees an empty bus, he thanks his stars profusely. Once inside the bus, a passenger has to buy a ticket. Of late, these tickets have become costlier. Then, the passenger moves forward and looks for a vacant seat. A gentleman cannot occupy a ‘Ladies seat’ reserved for old and young ladies. If by chance, a Youngman sits on a ‘Ladies Only’ seat he becomes a victim of everybody’s witty jibes. In all, it is an interesting experience travelling by a DTC bus.

Ans:                                         TORRENTIAL RAINS IN MY VILLAGE

This year there were heavy rains in many parts of North India. There were torrential rains in our village and the surrounding areas. At first, people welcome rains. They got relief from the scorching heat of the summer. But soon the rains became a source of trouble. It continued raining for ten days. The people of the village faced a lot of difficulties. The streets of the village were full of water. As these are kutcha streets, they became muddy and slippery. There was a flood in the nearby river. The floodwater entered the village also. The standing crops were destroyed. A number of kutcha houses collapsed due to floods and continuous torrential rains. Many cattle died. The normal life was disrupted. Our village was cut off from the other villages or cities because the roads were washed away. After ten days, the rains stopped. But still, it took many days for life to return normally.

Ans:                             THE REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATION IN YOUR CITY

  Republic Day was celebrated with great pomp and show at the Arjun Stadium in our city. Mr SwarupKrishan, the Home Minister of our state was the Chief Guest. The Police, the home guards and the N.C.C. cadets of different schools took part in the march past. The Chief Guest unfurled the national flag and took the salute of policemen and the N.C.C. cadets. Many colourful items were presented on the stage. I also took part in the celebration. I sang a patriotic song. But the Bhangra presented by our school was the best item. Various schools and departments of the city displayed tables to show the progress of our country. The Chief Guest congratulated the police and the N.C.C. cadets for their performance. He gave away prizes to those who took part in the cultural programme. In his speech, he asked people to work for the upliftment of the country.

 I was lucky to get a rare privilege to view the recent total solar eclipse—the last eclipse of the Millennium—from the Planetarium. The Planetarium Authorities had made elaborate and necessary arrangements to enable the general public to watch the heavenly event. It was a breath-taking and marvellous sight to see the total eclipse when the sun was hidden by the shadow of the moon. Only its glittering outer ring was visible behind the black circle that was the moon. This amazing phenomenon of the heavenly bodies was witnessed of thousands of enthusiasts all over the subcontinent. All viewers termed it a unique and awesome experience. This view reminds us that we are but a tiny dot in this vast universe.

 It was a matter of great privilege for our institution to have been invited to witness a thrilling dance and drama programme—`Bharat Jag Utah’ at the historic Red Fort on the auspicious occasion of the 70th anniversary of India’s independence. The spectacular educative show produced and presented by the artists of the Drama Division of All India Radio, brought alive the sacrifices made by the sons and the daughters of India during the struggle for freedom. It comprised of a dance-drama titled ‘Jagriti’, an audio-visual show and two patriotic songs. It also highlighted the progress India made in different domains since independence. Scenes depicting sacrifices infused the spirit of patriotism in the spectators. The memories of this colourful programme are indelibly printed on our hearts.

The Role of Schools in Preventing Communicable Diseases

  Before we embark on addressing this topic, we should try to understand about communicable diseases. Surely, communicable diseases, as the very word ‘communicable’ implies are those diseases which are communicated from person to person. This communication of diseases often takes place through certain media such as air or water. The commonest communicable diseases ale T.B, asthma, bronchitis, cholera, Hepatitis B and C, diarrhoea, dysentery, etc. In order to prevent these diseases, it is essential to keep the atmosphere neat, clean and hygienic such as not to create an ambience for the concerned bacteria to grow and flourish. It is essential to take effective steps to prevent the multiplication of flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, etc. which act as agents who carry the disease germs to the victims. Hands must be washed before eating and all clothes and utensils must be kept clean and washed after every usage. Preventive vaccines for diseases such as Hepatitis, cholera, measles, etc. must he got inoculated quite an in time. As for the school’s role in preventing communicable diseases, effective and well-meaning functions for the purpose may be held in schools, where people from the town and adjoining villages can be invited. At such functions, causes of such diseases and their remedies can be highlighted. Students should be encouraged to visit slums and rural areas, especially during summer vacation, to enlighten the people regarding the necessity of keeping their surroundings clean.  In case a disease spreads in an epidemic form, schools can be changed into temporary hospitals and dispensaries where the patients, can be treated by experts and the school teachers and students can do all kinds of social service that is necessary to make the campaign a success.
