International Men’s Day is observed on November 19, although when the holiday was first created it was celebrated in February.

History of International Men’s Day

In 1968, an American journalist named John P. Harris wrote an editorial highlighting a lack of balance in the Soviet system, which promoted an International Women’s Day for female workers but failed to deliver a male counterpart. Harris stated that though he agreed there should be a day to celebrate women, the day served as flaw within the communist system.

In the early 1990s Thomas Oaster, the director of the Missouri Center for Men’s Studies, invited organizations in the U.S., Australia, and Malta to hold small International Men’s Day events during the month of February. Oaster successfully hosted these events for two years, but his 1995 attempt was poorly attended. Discouraged, he ceased plans to continue the function. Australia followed suit, making Malta the sole country to continue celebrating.

In 1999 Trinidad and Tobago, the day was revived by Jerome Teelucksingh from the University of the West Indies. He realized that even though there was a day for fathers, there was no day to celebrate men who didn’t have kids, or who were young boys and teenagers. Teelucksingh understood the importance of positive male role models, as his father had been an excellent example for him, and chose to celebrate International Men’s Day on November 19 — the day of his father’s birthday as well as the day a local soccer team had united his country with their endeavors to qualify for the world cup.

Since Teelucksingh’s revival, International Men’s Day has served to promote positive aspects of male identity based on the premise that men respond more constructively to positive role models than to negative gender stereotyping. The day is not intended to compete with International Women’s Day, but to highlight the importance of men’s physical and mental health and positive masculinity.

American journalist John P. Harris wrote an editorial about how the Soviet Union celebrating International Women's Day and not having an International Men's Day went against the basic concepts of communism.

Thomas Oaster invited organizations to host small Men's Day events in the U.S., Australia, and Malta.

Jerome Teelucksingh from Trinidad and Tobago revived International Men's Day in order to highlight positive male role models and the importance of men's health.

Malta, who had still been celebrating International Men's Day in February, officially switched the day to be observed in November in order to be synchronized with the rest of the world.

International Men's Day can celebrate the myriad of diverse male identities that exist beyond ... [+] stereotypes.

On November 19 it will be International Men’s Day (‘IMD’). Many people will be left wondering why men need a special day, when every day could be considered male. These type of official days tend to acknowledge and celebrate the ‘underdog’, and so this November celebration may raise an eyebrow. It might sit awkwardly alongside Carers’ day (November 21) or National Grandparents day (October 4). However, men are just as much in need of celebration and support as other more ‘obvious’ groups.

Men are diverse

Men, like women, are diverse. Whilst an overriding stereotype of the buccaneering cowboy may persist in some minds, most of us can see from a cursory glance of social media that we now run the full gamut - from super alpha to super beta and all levels in between and around. Indeed, gender fluidity challenges more and more the very notion of binary gender divisions and what a ‘man’ is supposed to be.

At one end of the spectrum, men are still trapped by stereotype threat. Conforming to society’s idea of what a man should be, some people refer to this as toxic masculinity. In some situations, this is unhelpful as it can perpetuate the association between toxicity and some male traits that aren’t toxic. The notion that identity comes from an extreme form of supposed masculine traits from defensiveness to violence.

Everyone needs to belong

Much identity theory comes from notions of the ‘other’, the idea that in the absence of self-confidence, or indeed as a result of fear, we find it easier to define what we are not than what we actually are. That can allow men to ignore feelings and avoid admitting vulnerability. Because boys don’t cry.

Some men believe they are ‘not fem’, definitely not a sissy, and emphatically not perceived to be gay. This ‘othering’ can provide temporary and superficial self-confidence to people who are actually fearful. As long as there is some ‘other’ perceived to be ‘less’ than them, it provides artificial security. Yet there remains a genuine and fundamental human need to find our own identity and to define our place in the world. Men, women, all of us.

More empathy please

We need to extend empathy to those who appear to least need it. Men need to fulfil society’s expectations (or the perceived expectations others have) just like women do. Yet we need to ask ourselves why it is that boys are struggling academically, prisons are full of men and the most common cause of death for men under 50 is suicide.

It’s far harder for men to be vulnerable because that is acting outside their prescribed gender role. So, it’s good to have a day that celebrates male diversity and that reminds us all that men don’t have to be imprisoned by stereotypes in the way that women don’t either.

We need to provide alternative versions, kinder versions, more liberated versions that can act as genuine role models for young boys to aspire to.

Overcoming Stereotype threat

According to Philip Tanzer, a Men’s Rights Activist (MRA) from Germany, three things make you a man - building a house, planting a tree and becoming a father. He is a figure in the ‘Manosphere’, the underground online male rights movement.

He is driven by anger at men who lost their children in custody battles. Colleagues of his point out that women raping men is not a crime under UK law. And whilst the majority of domestic violence is still male on female, and women make up a tiny percentage of rapists, there is a sense that male victims are not properly acknowledged.

The ‘othering’ for a lot of MRA activists is to blame feminism. At the 2019 International Conference on Men’s issues, feminism bashing was a key theme. But IMD could draw attention to issues of genuine concern that are often not given the attention they deserve. It could offer an alternative to the growing movements that are being hijacked by the far right and polarizing gender politics.

Challenging male stereotypes and gender tropes

IMD can also offer a challenge to other narratives. Assuming all men should reject masculinity could be as equally unhelpful as assuming all men need to build houses and become fathers. Men do have parenting rights, do suffer domestic abuse and do have unmet mental health needs. Many men are leading lives of quiet desperation. Confusing toxic traits with genuine needs doesn’t help.

We should be able to celebrate differences rather than demonising them. As Obama has recently pointed out, piousness is not helpful. “Casting stones” is not activism and does not lead to change. It actually contributes to further polarization.

Providing role models and offering choice

If International Women’s Day is to celebrate women’s success in the face of sexism, IMD can celebrate men challenging stereotype threat. Men are just as lonely, just as vulnerable, but far less likely to admit it.

In the book Stories for boys who dare to be different we discover a plethora of role model men we can aspire to – guys who have achieved success without bashing women or polarizing communities. IMD can be less about ‘othering’ women and justifying misogyny and more about celebrating male diversity to give vulnerable men a real choice and positive hope for the future. Should we be celebrating International Men’s Day? Hell, yes.

Every boy has heard the proverb “Boys Don’t Cry” since childhood , whether it was from their parents, in school , or from their close-knit circle of friends . Ideally, we should instil in our kids that sobbing is completely fine, regardless of gender. We tend to associate crying with one gender, particularly boys, despite the fact that it’s not a sign of weakness. Due to the indoctrination of “boys don’t cry” concepts since childhood, boys frequently suppress their emotions from even their closest friends and family out of concern that others would perceive them as “weak” individuals. International Men’s Day Theme 2023

The theme of International Men’s Day 2023 is Zero Male Suicide . As per an estimate twice as many men kill themselves as compared to women. Its sole purpose is to promote gender equality and raise awareness of gender relations. Additionally, it promises to make the world a better and safer place where individuals can reach their full potential.

The goal of International Men’s Day is to address a wide range of issues relating to the mental health of men. History of International Men’s Day

Thomas Oaster originally came up with the idea for International Men’s Day in 1991, and it was first observed on February 7 of that same year. Dr Jerome Teelucksingh, a history instructor at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad Tobago, reintroduced the day in 1999. 

Uma Chulla, an Indian men’s rights advocate, began the celebrations in India in 2007. This goal was to show the appalling mistreatment that males endure in the nation’s anti-male justice system. Other subjects covered include liver fat alterations and belly obesity, which are growing issues for Indian males.

Timeline of International Men’s Day

In 2009, Malta, which had continued to mark International Men’s Day in February, changed the day’s official observance to fall in November to coincide with the rest of the world.

Is it Over Hyped or Anti-Feminist?

The fact that men can also be victims of rape, sexual exploitation, suicide,  and domestic abuse is frequently ignored because of our gender-biased system and the way in which men are portrayed negatively in the media. The fundamental problem with this is the prevalent worldview that sees males as evildoers in every circumstance. Men are encouraged as they mature to project a strong, unaffected image, which frequently conceals a tremendous desire to express how they are feeling. While it is not true that women experience mental health problems more easily than males, data suggests that cultural viewpoints and gender expectations may considerably raise the suicide risk for men. Saying that it is Over-Hyped or Anti-feminist, would be an unfair thing. Speaking out in support of the welfare and health of men is the focus of this day. The ultimate goal of this day is to spread awareness of men and fundamental humanitarian principles.

In 2021, the theme was on enhancing the “Better relations between men and women.” The theme for 2022 revolved around “Helping men and boys” by emphasizing the creation of safe environments and support systems for their well-being and development.

The Precarious Online Lives of Young Men

A s the new school year is upon us, parents are worried about their children’s mental health—and they should be. The latest CDC data from the largest ongoing study on youth well-being finds high rates of helplessness, suicidal ideas, bullying, among other forms of violence. For girls, the rates are often higher . But boys are far less likely to seek help when they need it, and are more likely to take out their problems on others.

In recent years, lots of young men feel adrift—and as a result, oftentimes find solace in misogynist and anti-democratic spaces online. That’s the alarm being raised by experts, including the U.S. Surgeon General, who recently called for warning labels on social media platforms.

The crisis among young men is real. Equimundo (the organization one of us, Gary Barker, leads) carried out a 2023 national study of 18 to 45-year-old men in the United States , which found that two out of three 18-23 year olds said “No one really knows me well.” In addition, 30% of the youngest men said they see no one outside their home on a weekly basis. And about 40% thought about suicide in the past two weeks.

As leaders of two organizations concerned about young men’s mental health and working to prevent violence online and off, these findings gave us pause. In the study, nearly half of men said their online lives are more interesting than their offline lives. Forty five percent of the youngest men said they trust one of the many angry, racist, misogynist, anti-democratic voices online. More trust Andrew Tate than the President. How do we hold a democracy together in light of that?

We recently shared these statistics with a group of high school boys of various ethnicities and income groups from the Washington, DC area. In response, the boys shared fears, doubts, frustrations about adults who judge and don’t understand, confusion about what it is to be a man, and concerns for despondent peers. They also told us about their search for friends, deeper relationships, and intimate partners—for just about everything —online.

In 2024, we followed up on that survey with a six-month long study of young men’s online lives, including an AI-assisted analysis of over 40 hours of Twitch streams, over 1.5 million lines of chat logs and 36,963 lines of Discord chat logs, and spent more than 100 hours observing the six largest male-dominated digital channels. And the results were striking: What we found was that, for young men, there is little distinction between “in real life” (IRL) and “online life.” Our review of young men’s online world confirms that their online communities dwarf their real-life spaces by a factor of at least a thousand. YouTube, the mothership of online platforms for young men, has about 2.49 billion monthly active users , between 55%-65% of which are men. Fantasy Football has 75 million users, more than two-thirds men. By contrast, 750,000 young men belong to U.S. fraternities and more than 1.1 million are in Scouting America. The upshot is that young men’s largest gathering spaces are online and much of their lives are spent in virtual meeting spaces. This means that we have to pay attention to what’s happening there—the positive, the harmful, and the in between.

Despite what we often think of the "manosphere," YouTube, Reddit, Fantasy Football, and other sites popular with young men lean more positive than negative. Queries like this one, posted by a young man on Reddit , speak volumes: “Hey other dudes. How many of you are dealing with the existential dread of not being able to afford it like our fathers and grandfathers were able to?” Thousands posted “likes” to that question in agreement and solidarity. From economic stress to gaming, being loveless to being a "lookmaxxer" seeking to improve physical appearance, young men feel that the internet gets them and their deepest fears.

In reality, the absence of real-life connections in the manosphere often becomes a space where misogyny and conspiracy theories feed real-life violence or self-harm. The pathway from clicking on or following the dark sides of the web—and engaging in violence or self-harm because of it— is, of course, complex. And while the majority of visitors in even the most misogynist spaces don’t carry out harm, frequent internet use has been associated with loneliness, poor communication with family, and depression. These unhealthy online spaces don’t just mirror those feelings—they often exacerbate them.

How can parents, educators, and media content makers help? First, we need to trust the boys. Young men (and young women) can be critical consumers and citizens in their online worlds. Start with a belief that young men’s engagement with dubious content online is not an automatic pathway to self-harm and violence.

Second, talk to young men. Researchers at the University of Liverpool developed a “Men for Change” curriculum that engages young men in conversations about what they consume online and were able to measure important attitude shifts. Parents, business leaders, and organizations have to get in the conversation, too. Vodafone's AI "aggro-rithms" campaign , for instance, raises awareness about how harmful AI algorithms target Britain’s boys and included a toolkit that supports parents in having online safety conversations with their children.

Third, build on the many influencers and spaces that already connect positively with young men. Such influencers are out there and can be engaged—we need to turn up the traffic to those spaces, as the men’s health group Movember has done.

Finally, guide young men to safer spaces—in real life— particularly when they are on the cusp of going down the rabbit hole to one of the angry, dark spaces, and are on the verge of causing harm to themselves or others. The group Diverting Hate, for instance, uses redirection campaigns—essentially buying ads linking to healthy manhood messages. Their results show that about 50% of users on platforms with harmful content looked at the ads, and in one setting they measured an increase in interest in positive off-line spaces for men.

Our work tells us that harmed young men, cut off from others, too often harm themselves or others. But if we engage them, care for them, listen to them, understand what they consume online, they both live better lives and they become better allies for others—for women’s rights, for racial justice, for our democracy—they will find their way. Let’s stay in the room for the difficult talks. Engage. Listen more. Don’t panic.

Attacks on Walz’s Military Record

In introducing her pick for vice presidential running mate, Kamala Harris has prominently touted Tim Walz’s 24 years of service in the Army National Guard. Now, however, GOP vice presidential nominee JD Vance and the Trump campaign are attacking Walz on his military record, accusing the Minnesota governor of “stolen valor.”

We’ll sort through the facts surrounding the three main attacks on Walz’s military record and let readers decide their merit. The claims include:

• Vance claimed that Walz “dropped out” of the National Guard when he learned his battalion was slated to be deployed to Iraq. Walz retired to focus on a run for Congress two months before his unit got official word of impending deployment, though the possibility had been rumored for months.
• Vance also accused Walz of having once claimed to have served in combat, when he did not. While advocating a ban on assault-style weapons, Walz said, “We can make sure that those weapons of war that I carried in war, is the only place where those weapons are at.” Update, Aug. 12: The Harris campaign says that Walz “misspoke.”
• The Republican National Committee has criticized Walz for misrepresenting his military rank in campaign materials. The Harris campaign website salutes Walz for “rising to the rank of Command Sergeant Major.” Walz did rise to that rank, but he retired as a master sergeant because he had not completed the requirements of a command sergeant major.

A native of West Point, Nebraska, Walz joined the Nebraska Army National Guard in April 1981, two days after his 17th birthday. When Walz and his wife moved to Minnesota in 1996, he transferred to the Minnesota National Guard, where he served in 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery.

“While serving in Minnesota, his military occupational specialties were 13B – a cannon crewmember who operates and maintains cannons and 13Z -field artillery senior sergeant,” according to a statement released by Army Lt. Col. Kristen Augé, the Minnesota National Guard’s state public affairs officer.

According to MPR News , Walz suffered some hearing impairment related to exposure to cannon booms during training over the years, and he underwent some corrective surgery to address it.

On Aug. 3, 2003, “Walz mobilized with the Minnesota National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery … to support Operation Enduring Freedom. The battalion supported security missions at various locations in Europe and Turkey. Governor Walz was stationed at Vicenza, Italy, during his deployment,” Augé stated. The deployment lasted about eight months.

“For 24 years I proudly wore the uniform of this nation,” Walz said at a rally in Philadelphia where he was announced as Harris’ running mate on Aug. 6. “The National Guard gave me purpose. It gave me the strength of a shared commitment to something greater than ourselves.”

Walz’s Retirement from the National Guard

In recent years, however, several of his fellow guard members have taken issue with the timing of Walz’s retirement from the National Guard in May 2005, claiming he left to avoid a deployment to Iraq.

Vance, who served a four-year active duty enlistment in the Marine Corps as a combat correspondent, serving in Iraq for six months in 2005, advanced that argument at a campaign event on Aug. 7.

“When the United States of America asked me to go to Iraq to serve my country, I did it,” Vance said. “When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, you know what he did? He dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him, a fact that he’s been criticized for aggressively by a lot of the people that he served with. I think it’s shameful to prepare your unit to go to Iraq, to make a promise that you’re going to follow through and then to drop out right before you actually have to go.”

In early 2005, Walz, then a high school geography teacher and football coach at Mankato West High School, decided to run for public office. In a 2009 interview Walz provided as part of the Library of Congress’ veterans oral history project, Walz said he made the decision to retire from the National Guard to “focus full time” on a run for the U.S. House of Representatives for Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District (which he ultimately won in 2006). Walz said he was “really concerned” about trying to seek public office and serve in the National Guard at the same time without running afoul of the Hatch Act , which limits political speech by federal employees, including members of the National Guard.

Federal Election Commission records show that Walz filed to run for Congress on Feb. 10, 2005.

On March 20, 2005, Walz’s campaign put out a press release titled “Walz Still Planning to Run for Congress Despite Possible Call to Duty in Iraq.”

Three days prior, the release said, “the National Guard Public Affairs Office announced a possible partial mobilization of roughly 2,000 troops from the Minnesota National Guard. … The announcement from the National Guard PAO specified that all or a portion of Walz’s battalion could be mobilized to serve in Iraq within the next two years.”

According to the release, “When asked about his possible deployment to Iraq Walz said, ‘I do not yet know if my artillery unit will be part of this mobilization and I am unable to comment further on specifics of the deployment.’ Although his tour of duty in Iraq might coincide with his campaign for Minnesota’s 1st Congressional seat, Walz is determined to stay in the race. ‘As Command Sergeant Major I have a responsibility not only to ready my battalion for Iraq, but also to serve if called on. I am dedicated to serving my country to the best of my ability, whether that is in Washington DC or in Iraq.'”

On March 23, 2005, the Pipestone County Star reported, “Detachments of the Minnesota National Guard have been ‘alerted’ of possible deployment to Iraq in mid-to-late 2006.”

“Major Kevin Olson of the Minnesota National Guard said a brigade-sized contingent of soldiers could be expected to be called to Iraq, but he was not, at this time, aware of which batteries would be called,” the story said. “All soldiers in the First Brigade combat team of the 34th Division, Minnesota National Guard, could be eligible for call-up. ‘We don’t know yet what the force is like’ he said. ‘It’s too early to speculate, if the (soldiers) do go.’

“He added: ‘We will have a major announcement if and when the alert order moves ahead.’”

ABC News spoke to Joseph Eustice, a retired command sergeant major who served with Walz, and he told the news organization this week that “he remembers Walz struggling with the timing of wanting to serve as a lawmaker but also avoiding asking for a deferment so he could do so.”

“He had a window of time,” Eustice told ABC News. “He had to decide. And in his deciding, we were not on notice to be deployed. There were rumors. There were lots of rumors, and we didn’t know where we were going until it was later that, early summer, I believe.”

Al Bonnifield, who served under Walz, also recalled Walz agonizing over the decision.

“It was a very long conversation behind closed doors,” Bonnifield told the Washington Post this week. “He was trying to decide where he could do better for soldiers, for veterans, for the country. He weighed that for a long time.”

In 2018, Bonnifield told MPR News that Walz worried in early 2005, “Would the soldier look down on him because he didn’t go with us? Would the common soldier say, ‘Hey, he didn’t go with us, he’s trying to skip out on a deployment?’ And he wasn’t. He talked with us for quite a while on that subject. He weighed that decision to run for Congress very heavy. He loved the military, he loved the guard, he loved the soldiers he worked with.”

But not all of Walz’s fellow Guard members felt that way.

In a paid letter to the West Central Tribune in Minnesota in November 2018, Thomas Behrends and Paul Herr — both retired command sergeants major in the Minnesota National Guard — wrote, “On May 16th, 2005 he [Walz] quit, leaving the 1-125th Field Artillery Battalion and its Soldiers hanging; without its senior Non-Commissioned Officer, as the battalion prepared for war. His excuse to other leaders was that he needed to retire in order to run for congress. Which is false, according to a Department of Defense Directive, he could have run and requested permission from the Secretary of Defense before entering active duty; as many reservists have.”

“For Tim Walz to abandon his fellow soldiers and quit when they needed experienced leadership most is disheartening,” they wrote. “When the nation called, he quit.”

Walz retired on May 16, 2005. Walz’s brigade received alert orders for mobilization on July 14, 2005, according to the National Guard and MPR News . The official mobilization report came the following month, and the unit mobilized and trained through the fall. It was finally deployed to Iraq in the spring of 2006.

The unit was originally scheduled to return in February 2007, but its tour was extended four months as part of President George W. Bush’s “surge” strategy , the National Guard reported. In all, the soldiers were mobilized for 22 months.

Responding to Vance’s claim that Walz retired to avoid deploying to Iraq, the Harris-Walz campaign released a statement saying, “After 24 years of military service, Governor Walz retired in 2005 and ran for Congress, where he was a tireless advocate for our men and women in uniform – and as Vice President of the United States he will continue to be a relentless champion for our veterans and military families.”

Walz on Carrying a Weapon ‘in War’

Vance also called Walz “dishonest” for a claim that Walz made in 2018 while speaking to a group about gun control.

“He made this interesting comment that the Kamala Harris campaign put out there,” Vance said, referring to a video of Walz that the Harris campaign posted to X on Aug. 6. “He said, ‘We shouldn’t allow weapons that I used in war to be on America’s streets.’ Well, I wonder, Tim Walz, when were you ever in war? What was this weapon that you carried into war given that you abandoned your unit right before they went to Iraq and he has not spent a day in a combat zone.”

In the video , Walz, who was campaigning for governor at the time, talked about pushing back on the National Rifle Association and said: “I spent 25 years in the Army and I hunt. … I’ve been voting for common sense legislation that protects the Second Amendment, but we can do background checks. We can do [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] research. We can make sure we don’t have reciprocal carry among states. And we can make sure that those weapons of war that I carried in war, is the only place where those weapons are at.”

But, as Vance indicated, there is no evidence that Walz carried a weapon “in war.”

Update, Aug. 12: In an Aug. 10 statement to CNN, the Harris campaign told CNN that Walz “misspoke.”

“In making the case for why weapons of war should never be on our streets or in our classrooms, the Governor misspoke,” campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt said in the statement. “He did handle weapons of war and believes strongly that only military members trained to carry those deadly weapons should have access to them.”

As we said, Augé, in her statement, said Walz’s battalion deployed “to support Operation Enduring Freedom” on Aug. 3, 2003, and “supported security missions at various locations in Europe and Turkey.” During his deployment, Walz was stationed in Vicenza, Italy, and he returned to Minnesota in April 2004, Augé said. There was no mention of Walz serving in Afghanistan, Iraq or another combat zone.

In the 2009 interview for the veterans history project, Walz said he and members of his battalion initially thought they would “shoot artillery in Afghanistan,” as they had trained to do. That didn’t happen, he said, explaining that his group ended up helping with security and training while stationed at an Army base in Vicenza.

“I think in the beginning, many of my troops were disappointed,” Walz said in the interview. “I think they felt a little guilty, many of them, that they weren’t in the fight up front as this was happening.”

In an Aug. 8 statement addressing his claim about carrying weapons “in war,” the Harris campaign noted that Walz, whose military occupational specialties included field artillery senior sergeant, “fired and trained others to use weapons of war innumerable times” in his 24 years of service.

Walz’s National Guard Rank

The Republican National Committee has criticized Walz for saying “in campaign materials that he is a former ‘Command Sergeant Major’ in the Army National Guard despite not completing the requirements to hold the rank into retirement.”

Walz’s biography on the Harris campaign website correctly says that the governor “served for 24 years” in the National Guard, “rising to the rank of Command Sergeant Major.” 

Walz’s official biography on the Minnesota state website goes further, referring to the governor as “Command Sergeant Major Walz.”

“After 24 years in the Army National Guard, Command Sergeant Major Walz retired from the 1-125th Field Artillery Battalion in 2005,” the state website says. 

Walz did serve as command sergeant major , but Walz did not complete the requirements to retire with the rank of command sergeant, Augé told us in an email. 

“He held multiple positions within field artillery such as firing battery chief, operations sergeant, first sergeant, and culminated his career serving as the command sergeant major for the battalion,” Augé said. “He retired as a master sergeant in 2005 for benefit purposes because he did not complete additional coursework at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy.”

This isn’t the first time that Walz’s National Guard rank has come up in a campaign. 

In their 2018 paid letter to the West Central Tribune, when Walz was running for governor, the two Minnesota National Guard retired command sergeants major who criticized Walz for retiring before the Iraq deployment also wrote: “Yes, he served at that rank, but was never qualified at that rank, and will receive retirement benefits at one rank below. You be the judge.”

Correction, Aug. 9: We mistakenly said a 2007 “surge” strategy in Iraq occurred under President Barack Obama. It was President George W. Bush.

Every year, November 19 holds a special significance for men the world over. Why? Because this day has been earmarked as International Men's Day. It is an occasion that calls for a special focus on men's health, improving gender relations and empowering men.

It is universally acknowledged that women have a significant role in all spheres of everyday life. They are productive members of the community and society, strengthen the institution of marriage, are actively involved in giving birth and rearing children, all the while providing constant support to the men.

While taking nothing away from the enormous contribution women make, it is good to remember that men play an equally important part. That is where the need to celebrate a day for men arises. And, even though Men's Day does not get as much attention, it definitely should.

Here is why we need to acknowledge and show appreciation to the men in our lives:

Reasons why International Men's Day should be celebrated

• Men can serve as positive role models:  Children tend to look up to someone as their role model, in their growing-up years. Today, most children end up idolizing sportsmen, celebrities or movie stars, especially those who play superhero characters. While there is nothing wrong in doing so, it is infinitely better to have a regular man, for instance, a father who is leading a normal, decent life as a good human being considered as a role model. That way, children will also realize that you do not have to be famous or celebrated on social media, to be an example to others. What's more, the involvement of a father can have a positive impact on his young children. Remember, if you are honest, hardworking, and disciplined, you are also a hero.
• A day to celebrate the positive contributions of men: Today, women are on equal terms with men and sometimes, even outshine them. This is vital for a more balanced society, but it is also important to celebrate the achievements of men. In their own way, men too make positive and essential contributions to society, family, marriage, and child-rearing. Hence, this should be celebrated.
• Men's issues need to be discussed:  Boys tend to be traditionally raised with the stereotypical notion that as a man you should be strong and not show any weakness. This is totally wrong. Men are also human beings and can face problems both on the personal and professional front. What's more, it is healthier to openly talk and resolve such issues, than to stay quiet.
• It focuses on the importance of a father: Today, in our increasingly busy lives, either one or both parents struggle to balance work and home. Invariably, the mother chooses to take a break and look after the children. But what about the father? Often, the father is so preoccupied with work that he hardly has any time for his family. Having a day focused on men is a great way to encourage fathers to be present for their children and play an active role in their lives.
• Gender equality:  What is gender equality? In general terms, it means a scenario when both women and men enjoy equal opportunities and have an equal say in personal and professional matters. Often, boys are taught early that they have no choice but to suffer hardships in silence and to fulfill the role of the breadwinner or main provider for the family. This puts unnecessary pressure on men from an early age and some of them crumble under the strain.
• Day to put a focus on discrimination: Yes, it is not a myth! Men are also discriminated against in various ways. In many countries, it is in fact compulsory for men to enlist in the military and serve the nation. There are also certain laws pertaining to alimony and custody of children that do not favor men. Men are also supposed to be masculine and strong, and not complain about discrimination. Perhaps it is time we take a deeper look at such sensitive issues.
• Men help balance women and vice versa:  A man cannot give to his child what a woman can. That holds true for women as well. While women are portrayed as loving, kind, gentle and nurturing caregivers, men tend to be seen as challenging and playful with their children. The truth is, both parents balance each other and bring different qualities to parenting. Also, they need to work together and be equally committed, to raising their children. That is when children grow up healthier and happier, both emotionally and physically.

At the end of the day, men are an equal and vital part of society. Just like women, they too don multiple roles father, son, brother, uncle and grandfather, so on. Shouldn't we celebrate men both for themselves and their achievements and also, for the manner in which they support the women in their lives? What better way to do that than by dedicating a day to all men!

Tim Walz's military record under scrutiny as he joins Kamala Harris on Democratic ticket

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz 's military record has come under renewed scrutiny following Vice President Kamala Harris' announcement of Walz as her running mate on the Democratic ticket. 

On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, who is an Iraq War veteran, seized the opportunity to target his opponent's military record, resurfacing claims about his deployments and his retirement from the guard.

Walz served honorably in both the Nebraska and Minnesota Army National Guards, earning medals and deploying in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. But his final days of service have been called into question, centering on his rank and if he retired to avoid a 2005 deployment to Iraq. 

A CBS News review of Walz's military record and statements from the Minnesota Army National Guard show Walz achieved the rank of command sergeant major but was reduced in rank to master sergeant after retirement since he had not completed coursework for the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. 

On Iraq, records show Walz had retired before his battalion was mobilized and deployed to Iraq. A 2005 statement from his website indicates Walz was initially prepared to deploy to Iraq amid his bid for Congress. CBS News has asked Walz for comment on when he decided to retire. 

A snapshot of Walz in the military

Walz retired from the Minnesota Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery in 2005 after more than 24 years in service, the Minnesota Army National Guard told CBS News. 

Walz first enlisted in the Nebraska Army National Guard in April 1981, serving as an infantry senior sergeant and administrative specialist. In 1996, Walz transferred to the Minnesota Army National Guard, where he first worked as a cannon crewmember and field artillery senior sergeant. 

Minnesota National Guard spokesperson Lt. Col. Kristen Augé told CBS News that Walz "held multiple positions within field artillery such as firing battery chief, operations sergeant, first sergeant, and culminated his career serving as the command sergeant major for the battalion." 

Walz earned several Army commendation and achievement medals during his more than 24 years of service. 

Walz deployed in August 2003 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The Minnesota National Guard told CBS News the battalion supported security missions at various locations in Europe and Turkey. Walz was stationed at Vicenza, Italy, at the time and returned to Minnesota in April 2004. 

Controversy over a 2005 Iraq deployment

On Wednesday, Vance resurfaced claims that Walz retired from the National Guard to avoid deploying to Iraq. 

"When the United States Marine Corps, when the United States of America, asked me to go to Iraq to serve my country I did it. I did what they asked me to do, and I did it honorably and I'm very proud of that service," said Vance. 

He added: "When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, you know what he did? He dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him — a fact that he's been criticized for aggressively by a lot of the people he served with." 

The Harris-Walz campaign responded with a statement saying: "After 24 years of military service, Governor Walz retired in 2005 and ran for Congress, where he [served as the ranking member] of Veterans Affairs and was a tireless advocate for our men and women in uniform — and as Vice President of the United States he will continue to be a relentless champion for our veterans and military families." The statement incorrectly stated Walz chaired the Veterans Affairs committee. 

The campaign also said, "In his 24 years of service, the Governor carried, fired and trained others to use weapons of war innumerable times. Governor Walz would never insult or undermine any American's service to this country -- in fact, he thanks Senator Vance for putting his life on the line for our country. It's the American way."  

The claims raised by Vance first gained prominence when Walz ran for governor of Minnesota in 2018. At the time, retired Army veterans Thomas Behrends and Paul Herr, who both served as command sergeant majors, posted on Facebook a lengthy letter accusing Walz of "embellishing" his military career and abandoning his Army National Guard battalion ahead of a 2005 deployment to Iraq.

In the letter, Behrends and Herr write that in early 2005, Walz's unit — 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery — was slated to deploy to Iraq. At the time, Walz was serving as the unit's command sergeant major. 

Behrends and Herr claimed that from the time the unit was told to prepare for an Iraq deployment and when Walz retired, he told other Army leaders he would be going to Iraq but later resigned his position before the deployment to avoid going to a combat zone. 

Walz has said he left the guard to run for Congress, according to the Star Tribune . In 2006, Walz won his election to Congress against a six-term Republican incumbent. 

Records show Walz officially filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Feb. 10, 2005. 

In March 2005, the National Guard announced a possible partial mobilization of roughly 2,000 troops from the Minnesota National Guard, according to an archived press release from Tim Walz for U.S. Congress.  

"I do not yet know if my artillery unit will be part of this mobilization and I am unable to comment further on the specifics of the deployment," said Walz in the March 2005 statement . 

The statement continued: "As Command Sergeant Major I have a responsibility not only to ready my battalion for Iraq, but also to serve if called on. I am dedicated to serving my country to the best of my ability, whether that is in Washington DC or Iraq," said Walz, who indicated at the time he had no plans to drop out of the race. "I am fortunate to have a strong group of enthusiastic support and a very dedicated and intelligent wife. Both will be a major part of my campaign, whether I am in Minnesota or Iraq." 

The Minnesota Army National Guard told CBS News that Walz retired on May 16, 2005. CBS News has asked Walz to clarify when he submitted his retirement papers. 

The Minnesota National Guard told CBS News that Walz's unit — 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery — received an alert order for mobilization to Iraq on July 14, 2005 – two months after Walz retired, according to Lt. Col. Ryan Rossman, who serves as the Minnesota National Guard's director of operations. The official mobilization order was received on August 14 of the same year, and the unit mobilized in October. 

CBS News reviewed the deployment history for the Minnesota Army National Guard which shows that in the fall of 2005, 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery was mobilized in preparation for a deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The battalion trained at Camp Shelby in Mississippi and deployed to Iraq as a motorized security task force. 

In 2018, Tom Hagen, a military reservist who served in Iraq, wrote a letter to The Winona Daily News claiming Walz was not being candid about his service record and wanted people to know that the future Minnesota governor did not serve in Iraq or Afghanistan. 

Walz responded in the same newspaper and criticized Hagan as dishonoring a fellow veteran, according to MPR News. Walz wrote: "There's a code of honor among those who've served, and normally this type of partisan political attack only comes from one who's never worn a uniform."

Joseph Eustice, a 32-year veteran of the guard who also led Walz's battalion, told CBS Minnesota that while he doesn't agree with Walz's politics, he does believe Walz's record in the military is sound.

"Tim Walz as a soldier, he was a good soldier. I don't think anyone can honestly say that he wasn't," Eustice said. "...He was a good leader in those 24 years that he served."

Walz's rank as a command sergeant major

Official biographies on the Minnesota government website and Vice President Kamala Harris' website  have described Walz as a "retired Command Sergeant Major." However, documents reviewed by CBS News show this is not accurate; while Walz served at one point as a command sergeant major, he retired at a lower rank. 

Army veteran Anthony Anderson, who routinely obtains military records from the Defense Department using the Freedom of Information Act and has worked with CBS News on similar stories, provided Walz's records for review. CBS News has also requested the documents from the National Guard. 

One of the documents shows Walz reverted back to master sergeant from command sergeant major when he retired from the Minnesota National Guard in May 2005. 

Army soldiers promoted to the rank of sergeant major or command sergeant major are required to attend the Sergeants Major Course, or what was formerly known as the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy.  

Lt. Col. Augé, the Minnesota National Guard spokesperson, told CBS News that Walz retired as a master sergeant in 2005 for "benefit purposes" because he did not complete additional coursework at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy.

While Walz can say he served as a command sergeant major in the Minnesota Army National Guard, his official biographies are incorrect in referring to him as a "retired Command Sergeant Major."

On Aug. 8, the campaign website updated its description of his service. It omits his rank upon retirement and now reads, "The son of an Army veteran who served as a command sergeant major, Walz was the ranking member on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, where he passed legislation to help stem veterans' suicides."

Olympics highlights: USA men's basketball, USWNT win gold on busy day at Paris Games

The penultimate day of the 2024 Paris Olympics was a huge one for Team USA, with the men's basketball and women's soccer teams adding gold medals to their already-enormous trophy cabinets.

In track and field, the American men and women each won gold in the 4x400 relay, the eighth consecutive Olympic title in the event for the U.S. women.

American Masai Russell won gold in the women's 100 hurdles , with U.S. athletes also earning medals in men's high jump, men's 5000 meter, men's breaking , women's canoe 200m, women's boulder and lead climbing and men's freestyle 74kg wrestling.

Here's how Saturday at the Olympics unfolded:

Steph Curry plays hero, USA basketball wins gold

PARIS — The global men’s basketball torch remains in the grasp of the Americans.

Perhaps the grip is loosening. But it still belongs to the U.S.

The U.S. and its loaded roster filled with MVPs, All-Stars and NBA champions proved that once again, defeating France 98-87 in for the Olympic gold medal Saturday at Bercy Arena.

Sorry France and Victor Wembanyama. Sorry Serbia and Nikola Jokic. You too, Germany and Franz Wagner and Canada and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. It’s not your time for gold. Not yet. Maybe at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Maybe.

But not now.

USA women win eighth consecutive 4x400 gold

SAINT-DENIS, France — Gabby Thomas is leaving the 2024 Olympics with the best kind of souvenir: gold. 

Gold medals, to be specific. Three of them. 

Thomas picked up her third in the finale of Olympic track and field Saturday at Stade de France in the women’s 4x400 relay, as the Americans clocked an American record 3:15.27 to smoke the Netherlands (3:19.50) and Great Britain (3:19.72). 

Thomas ran the third leg, taking the baton from Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and handing off to Alexis Holmes for the anchor. Thomas ran a 49.30 split.

Shamier Little, the only athlete from the final who’d also run in prelims, got the U.S. started in the race.

American Shelby McEwen wins silver in men’s high jump

SAINT-DENIS, France — In a jump off, Hamish Kerr of New Zealand won gold in the men’s high jump while Shelby McEwen of the U.S. took silver. It is the first high jump medal for the U.S. since 2012.

Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim, who shared gold in Tokyo with Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy, claimed the bronze.

The competition came down to Kerr and McEwen after both cleared 2.36 meters (7 feet, 8 3/4), but neither could get over 2.38. They agreed to a jump off and started lowering the bar. Both cleared 2.36 again but on 2.34, McEwen missed while Kerr got over. When he cleared the bar, Kerr went running onto the empty field, his arms stretched out in victory.

McEwen’s first 2.36 clearance was a personal best for him. He got over on his first attempt, and was the first jumper to clear that height. He laid on the high jump bit after getting over the bar, his ecstasy as obvious as his gold spikes.

The event had plenty of drama.

Earlier Saturday, Tamberi posted on social media that he was headed to the ER after vomiting blood and dealing with severe kidney pain. He wasn’t sure if he’d be able to compete in the final, but rallied and cleared 2.22 meters (7 feet, 3 1/4 inches) on his third attempt before failing to clear 2.27 (7 feet, 5 1/4 inches).

U.S. men win 4x400 relay gold in Olympic record time

SAINT-DENIS, France – Rai Benjamin confidently told USA TODAY Sports that the U.S. men’s 4x400-relay team “ got something for ” their competition in the final. Benjamin was correct.

Benjamin led the U.S. 4x400-relay team to a victory at Stade de France. The men's team consisted of Chris Bailey, Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon and Benjamin at anchor.

Norwood got the team in position running the second leg, Deadmon got the squad a two-meter lead on the third leg and Benjamin took the gold home with a Olympic record time of 2:54.43. Botswana earned the silver with a time of 2:54.53 and Great Britain rounded out the top three, clocking in at 2:55.83.

The gold capped off a superb Paris Olympics for both Benjamin and Hall, who each of two gold medals apiece at these Games. Benjamin won his first Olympic gold medal in the men’s 400 hurdles. While Hall dug deep and rallied back to win gold in the open 400. — Tyler Dragon

Kenya runner breaks Olympic record, wins gold in women's 1,500

SAINT-DENIS, France — Kenya's Faith Kipyegon won the gold medal and set a new Olympic standard in the women's 1,500-meter race Saturday at the Paris Games clocking an Olympic record time of 3:51.29 at Stade de France. Kipyegon outpaced Australia's Jessica Hull, who took silver in 3:52.56, and Great Britain's Georgia Bell, who got bronze with a time of 3:52.61.

Two competitors for Team USA, Nikki Hiltz (3:56.38) and Elle St. Pierre (3:57.52) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, out of 12. — Chase Goodbread

Grant Fisher earns another bronze in men's 5,000m

In some much-needed redemption after disaster in the 1,500, Norway’s Jakob Ingerbrigtsen used a killer kick to win the men’s 5,000, running a season best 13:13.66. He outlasted Kenya’s Ronald Kwemoi (13:15.04) who finished second. American Grant Fisher won his second bronze of the Games, finishing third at 13:15.13.

Fisher finished third in the men’s 10,000 on the first day of track and field at the 2024 Olympics, earning the U.S.’s first medal in that event since the 2012 London Games. — Lindsay Schnell

Kennedy Blades reaches gold medal match

Kennedy Blades has put on a show during the first three matches of her run at the Paris Olympics, going 3-0 and outscoring her opponents 23-9 to reach Sunday's gold-medal match. Awaiting her there will be the winner of Columbia's Tatiana Renteria vs. Japan's Yuka Kagami.

Blades recently transferred to Iowa and hasn't even worn a Hawkeye singlet yet. But she's already Iowa women's wrestling's first Olympian and Olympic medalist . — Eli McKown, Hawk Central

Alyssa Naeher unflappable for USWNT in gold medal match win

PARIS — Alyssa Naeher might as well change the nickname on her Wikipedia page to "Captain America" or "Secretary of Defense" herself.

The  USWNT  goalkeeper's one-handed stop – like a basketball defender blocking someone at the rim – on a header from Brazil’s Adriana in the fourth minute of stoppage time saved the day and preserved the  Americans' 1-0 win in the Olympic gold medal match  at the  2024 Paris Games . Minutes later, her teammates pounced on her after the referee blew the final whistle, ending more than 10 minutes of stoppage time.

Masai Russell wins women's 100 hurdles in photo finish

SAINT-DENIS, France — Masai Russell beat the defending Olympic champion in the 100 hurdles.

Russell outdueled Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn to win her first Olympic gold medal. She ran a time of 12.33 to earn the gold.

France’s Cyréna Samba-Mayela ran a 12.34 to place second and Camacho-Quinn crossed the line at 12.36 to come in third in the photo finish.

Camacho-Quinn got a great start out of the blocks, but Russell pulled even with her and slightly surpassed her at the ninth hurdle and held off the other hurdlers for the victory.

Russell’s had an impressive climb to the top of the hurdles. She didn’t finish the 100 hurdles semifinal at the 2023 world championships. But 2024 has been her year. She won the event at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials with a personal-best and world-leading time of 12.25, the fourth fastest time in history. And she capped off the year as an Olympic champion.

Jordan Chiles might have to return bronze medal

PARIS — The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled Saturday that the judging panel at the  women's floor exercise final  improperly granted an inquiry that increased U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles' score and moved her into bronze medal position. The Swiss-based court ruled that the appeal was submitted past the one-minute deadline for inquiries and therefore should not have been granted.

As a result, it said, Chiles should have received a score of 13.666 in the event – which would've placed her fifth, just shy of the Olympic podium.

CAS said in a statement that its ruling applied to Chiles' score but not the final ranking. — Tom Schad

Bryce Hoppel places 4th in 800m, but nets national record

SAINT-DENIS, France — Team USA's Bryce Hoppel just missed a spot on the podium Saturday in the 800-meter race at the Paris Games, running a time of 1:41.67, but he did record a national record despite a fourth-place finish. Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonwi took gold in 1:41.19, followed by Canada's Marco Arop (silver, 1:41.20) and Algeria's Djamel Sedjati (bronze, 1:41.50).

The previous U.S. record in the 800 was held by Donavan Brazier (1:42.34).

On the final night of competition at Stade de France, Hoppel held third place halfway through the race, but could not close well enough to medal in an event in which Team USA has had only sparse success; only three medals in the last 40 years. Team USA's last medal in the 800m race came at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, a bronze by Clayton Murphy. The two others in that span were by Earl Jones (bronze, Los Angeles, 1984) and Johnny Gray (bronze, Barcelona, 1992).

USWNT wins first gold since 2012

PARIS — The  United States women’s national soccer team  defeated Brazil, 1-0, on Saturday to win the gold medal at the  2024 Paris Games . Mallory Swanson scored in the 57th minute, her fourth goal of these Games, to lead the Americans to their first gold medal since 2012 and their fifth overall. 

Throughout these Olympic Games, the Americans have been led by the trio of  Swanson, Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith  while defender  Naomi Girma  has been something of a brick wall on the backline. In the gold medal match, goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher was unflappable, coming up with clutch saves throughout the game. All of this orchestrated by new head coach  Emma Hayes , whose sense of humor and demanding style has built trust with the players and struck the right balance for this roster.

USWNT takes lead on goal by Mallory Swanson

Mallory Swanson gave the United States a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute on a signature run down the left side. Korbin Albert, starting in place of Rose Lavelle, delivered the through ball for either Sophia Smith or Swanson. Smith would have likely been ruled offside if she touched it. But Swanson swooped in and made a beeline for the net, and her right-footed blast beat Brazil’s keeper Lorena to break the scoreless tie.

France men defend Olympic title in volleyball

France beat Poland in straight sets, 25-19, 25-20, 25-23, to win its second consecutive gold medal in men's volleyball.

The crowd began chanting 'Allez Les Bleus' and the national anthem as the third set wound down.

Team USA won bronze by beating Italy on Friday.

Team USA's B-boy Victor, B-boy Jeffro advance to medal round

Both of the two Americans in the men's Olympic breaking competition will move on to the knockout round .

B-boy Jeffro, whose real name is Jeffrey Louis, had mathematically clinched his spot in the quarterfinals even before he went out for his third battle. He won each of his first two battles handily and earned 30 of the possible 36 votes from the nine-person judging panel in the process.

B-boy Victor, whose full name is Victor Montalvo , appeared to draw one of the tougher groups in the round-robin stage but tore through his first three opponents with relative ease – winning five of his six rounds, including sweeps of Japanese breaker Hiro10 and B-boy Lithe-ing of China. Shigekix of Japan was the other breaker to advance out of Victor's group. — Tom Schad

USWNT-Brazil in scoreless tie at halftime

For the United States women's soccer team, the first half of both the quarterfinals and semifinals were scoreless (and all of regulation, for that matter).  The final against Brazil was no exception .

Both teams had their fair share of scoring chances – Brazil’s more consistent compared to the Americans – but neither side had anything to show for it. 

Brazil’s Ludmila has been a handful for the U.S. back line to deal with. It looked like she put Brazil up in the 16th minute when she beat Naomi Girma off the dribble in the box, but luckily for the U.S., the offside flag went up. Alyssa Naeher came up huge during stoppage time to save a Gabi Porthilo strike. 

Mallory Swanson had the United States’ best chance of scoring on a long, speedy run with the ball. 

What to expect from LA28

PARIS — After the  Paris Olympics conclude Sunday, the Paralympics  will run Aug. 28 to Sept. 8, then the  squash racket, lacrosse stick and cricket  ball – all sporting additions to the 2028 Games – will be in Los Angeles' court.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and and LA28 Olympic Games chair Casey Wasserman, who are in Paris as part of a U.S. presidential delegation to the Olympics that was led by First Lady Jill Biden, provided a few details Saturday to reporters about what sports fans – and Angelenos – can expect to see four years from now.

"We don't have an Eiffel Tower. We do have a Hollywood sign," said Wasserman. He said that while the Paris Games have been "authentically French" the 2028 Games will be "authentically Los Angeles."

Lydia Ko wins gold medal in women's golf

SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France – New Zealand's Lydia Ko completed her Olympic trifecta on Saturday, adding a gold medal to her silver from Rio and bronze from Tokyo.

At 10 under par for the event, Ko shot a 1 under 71 on Saturday to hold on and win the Olympic golf tournament at Le Golf National by two strokes over silver medalist Esther Henseleit of Germany (8 under) and bronze medalist Lin Xiyu of China (7 under).

It was a disappointing finish for a trio of American players. World No. 1 Nelly Korda, Rose Zhang and Lilia Vu each shot over-par rounds Saturday, with Zhang (5 under) and Tokyo gold medalist Korda (1 under) each stumbling to miss the medals after starting the final day in contention. — Gentry Estes

The  United States women’s national team  takes on Brazil, aiming to win its first gold medal since 2012, which is also the last time they made the final.

Lydia Ko opens up five-shot lead in women's golf tournament

Lydia Ko of New Zealand is 2-under par after 11 holes during Saturday's final round, giving her an overall score of 11 under for Paris. That's five shots better than her closest competitors.

Nelly Korda is the closest American at 4 under overall. Rose Zhang, who started Saturday at 7 under, is 4 over on the day and has dropped into a tie for 11th place at 3 under.

B-Boys breaking begins Saturday

The  breaking  competition continues Saturday at the  2024 Paris Olympics , with the B-Boys taking center stage.

The competition starts with a round-robin tournament, four groups of four breakers, with each one going two rounds against the other three in their group. From there, the top two B-Boys in each group – as determined by who won the most rounds – advance to the quarterfinals. The quarters, semis and finals are three rounds in a traditional bracket style.

Nevin Harrison nearly notches gold in canoe sprint

VAIRES-SUR-MARNE, France — Nevin Harrison came 1/100th of a second away from winning her second gold medal.

Harrison took the silver medal in the women’s 200-meter canoe sprint Saturday, losing to Canada’s Katie Vincent in a photo finish.

Vincent finished the course in a world-record tie of 44.12 seconds, a hair ahead of Harrison (44.13). Cuba's Yarisleidis Cirilo Duboys (44.36) took bronze.

Harrison set an Olympic record on her way to winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics as an 18-year-old. She finished second in her semifinal heat, 29/100ths of a second behind Vincent.

Vincent won a bronze earlier in the games as part of Canada’s 500-meter canoe doubles team. — Dave Birkett

American climber wins first Olympic medal

LE BOURGET, France — American sport climber Brooke Raboutou claimed her first Olympic medal Saturday, winning silver in the women’s boulder and lead combined final, finishing behind Slovenian favorite and gold medalist Janja Garnbret. Garnbret led the way with 168.5 total points, followed by Raboutou with 156.0 and Austria’s Jessica Pilz with 147.4 points for bronze.Raboutou – a 23-year-old two-time Olympian – built off a strong performance in the boulder final, finishing that portion with 84 points, just .4 points behind Garnbret, 25. Raboutou and Garnbret were the only climbers to top three of the four boulder problems, finishing the round second and first, respectively. In the lead portion, Raboutou had another standout performance, collecting 72 points, moving to the top of the leaderboard and guaranteeing herself a medal. Garnbret previously won Olympic gold at the 2021 Tokyo Games  in the women’s combined – a different format compared with the Paris Olympics when the combined event featured boulder, lead and speed. Raboutou finished fifth in the event in Tokyo. ― Michelle Martinelli

Serbia wins bronze in men's basketball

Serbia men’s 5x5 basketball team captured the bronze medal with a 93-83 victory over Germany on Saturday. Serbia rebounded from a heartbreaking 95-91 loss to the U.S. in the semifinals and prevented Germany from earning its first Olympic medal in men’s 5x5.

Serbia’s three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic had 19 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists, and teammate Vasilije Micic scored 19 points. Bogdan Bogdanovic added 16 points for Serbia, which earned silver medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2023 FIBA World Cup.

It was a disappointing finish for Germany, the 2023 FIBA World Cup champion, which went 3-0 in group play but lost to France in the semifinals and Serbia in the third-place game.

Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola wins gold in men's marathon

Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia took the gold medal in the men's marathon Saturday morning, setting a new Olympic record with a time of 2:06.26, and blowing away the chase group by more than 20 seconds to earn his second Olympic medal. Bashir Abdi won the silver medal (2:06.47) and Kenya's Benson Kipruto (2:07.00) took bronze.

The previous Olympic record had been 2:06.32 by Kenya's Samuel Kamau Wanjiru in 2008.

Two Americans, Conner Mantz (2:08.12) and Clayton Young (2:08.44), turned in season-bests to finish eighth and ninth, respectively.

India at Paris 2024 Olympics, Day 13, as it happened: Neeraj Chopra settles for javelin throw silver, hockey team win back-to-back bronze

All eyes throughout India were on Neeraj Chopra in the men’s javelin throw final on Day 13, hoping he would bring home consecutive gold medals at the Olympics.

But it was only a silver for the reigning world champion at the Paris 2024 Olympics after a historic moment at the Stade-de-France.

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem stunned the field on his second attempt by smashing the Olympic record with a 92.97m mark in the final. Chopra reacted instantly but could only muster 89.45m in reply. The Indian ace fell short of a mammoth effort by his Pakistani counterpart.

Chopra’s silver medal, notably, made him India’s most successful Olympian. He is also the seventh to claim silver in individual events at the Summer Games.

However, it wasn’t the only highlight of the day for India.

The Indian men’s hockey team , meanwhile, gave PR Sreejesh a perfect sendoff. Harmanpreet Singh bolstered his team to a 2-1 victory over Spain and clinched the bronze medal.

Incidentally, for the first time since Munich 1972, India bagged two Olympic medals on the bounce in men’s hockey.

In wrestling, Aman Sehrawat stormed into the men’s 57kg freestyle semi-finals after back-to-back wins by technical superiority. Japan’s Rei Higuchi, with a dominant performance, ended Aman’s journey towards the title.

The 21-year-old Aman will now wrestle for the bronze medal on Friday for India’s first medal in the sport at Paris 2024.

Athletics: Neeraj Chopra bags silver, Arshad Nadeem breaks Olympic record

Reigning world champion Neeraj Chopra fell short of defending his Tokyo 2020 title in the men’s javelin throw final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Chopra, 26, notched 89.45m, his career second-best throw , to win the silver medal. He became independent India's first track and field athlete to bag two medals at the Olympics.

Arshad Nadeem , meanwhile, shattered the Olympic record with a 92.97m effort on his second attempt and became the first athlete from Pakistan to clinch the gold medal in an individual event at the Olympics. Nadeem also marked 91.79m on his final attempt.

Anderson Peters from Grenada completed the podium with a best of 88.54m to take home the bronze medal.

Score : Neeraj Chopra (IND) won the silver medal with an 89.45m attempt in the men’s javelin throw final.

Hockey: Netherlands clinch the men’s gold medal

The Netherlands beat Germany 1(3)-1(1) in the men’s hockey gold medal match at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Thursday. Germany, the reigning world champions, settled for a silver medal.

After the match ended drawn 1-1 in regulation time, the Dutch team won the shoot-out competition 3-1. The Oranje , as a result, clinched their third Olympic title, the first since Sydney 2000.

Earlier, India beat Spain 2-1 in the men’s hockey bronze medal match.

Athletics: Neeraj Chopra ranked second after three attempts

Neeraj Chopra , India’s golden boy, was placed second after three attempts in the Paris 2024 Olympics men’s javelin throw final. Chopra’s only successful attempt was an 89.45m effort.

Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan remains atop the standings after an Olympic record and personal best of 92.97m effort. Nadeem is only the fourth athlete to notch beyond 90m in the men’s javelin throw final at the Olympics.

Jakub Vadlejch (CZE), Anderson Peters (GRN), Julius Yego (KEN), Julian Weber (GER), Keshorn Walcott (TTO) and Lassi Etelatalo (FIN), along with Chopra and Nadeem, will get three extra attempts in the final.

Athletics: Neeraj Chopra marks 89.45m on second attempt

Defending Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra marked 89.45m, a season best, on his second attempt in the men’s javelin throw final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

After his second throw, Chopra is ranked second. The 26-year-old Indian athlete needs to be within the top eight to get three more attempts after his upcoming third attempt.

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem is atop after two attempts with a mammoth 92.97m throw, an Olympic record and personal best. Anderson Peters (GRN) is third with 87.87m and Julius Yego (KEN) is fourth with 87.72m.

Chopra takes on a field of 11 other athletes, of which five have a better personal best than him. However, in qualification on Tuesday, the 26-year-old from India topped the charts.

Athletics: Neeraj Chopra to feature in men’s javelin throw final

India’s golden boy Neeraj Chopra will be in action in the men’s javelin throw final, starting at 11:55 PM IST tonight, at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

In qualification, Chopra had aced a mammoth 89.34m throw to top the field. Compatriot Kishore Jena, however, failed to breach the qualification standard or finish in the overall top 12.

At Tokyo 2020, Chopra clinched India’s first track and field gold at the Olympics, pipping Czechia duo Jakub Vadlejch and Vitezslav Vesely to the title.

If Chopra successfully defends his title today, he will become the first Indian athlete to win two gold medals in individual events.

Wrestling: No repechage for Anshu Malik

Earlier today, Indian wrestler Anshu Malik lost to Helen Louise Maroulis of the USA in the women’s 57kg freestyle round of 16 bout at the Champ-de-Mars Arena.

Anshu, however, would have had the chance to wrestle for a bronze medal via the repechage rounds if Maroulis had made the final.

Maroulis, a Rio 2016 champion in 53kg, won her quarter-final bout but went down to Japan’s Tsugumi Sakurai in the semi-final. While Maroulis will now feature in the bronze medal bout tomorrow (August 9), it ended Anshu Malik’s campaign at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Wrestling: Aman Sehrawat outclassed in semis, to wrestle for bronze tomorrow

Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat lost 0-10 against Japan’s Rei Higuchi in the men’s 57kg freestyle semi-final bout at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Aman, however, can still win a medal at the Summer Games. The Asian champion will feature in the bronze medal bout tomorrow (August 9) against Pan American Games bronze medallist Darian Cruz of Puerto Rico.

In the semi-final, Higuchi was in total control of the bout from the first whistle. The Rio 2016 silver medallist notched four points in his first attack and kept piling on the points in the first period. Eventually, the bout was over in just two minutes and 14 seconds at the Champ-de-Mars Arena on Thursday.

Higuchi will face Spencer Richard Lee of the USA in the gold medal bout tomorrow.

The winner of this semi-final bout is assured a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics and will grapple in the gold medal match tomorrow (August 9).

The losing semi-finalist, however, will wrestle in the bronze medal bout tomorrow against one of the repechage contestants.

Golf: Diksha Dagar slips down seven places, placed T14 with Aditi Ashok

India’s Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar teed off for the second round in the women’s golf tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Thursday.

Aditi carded 1-under 71 in the second round, better than her even par score from the first. Diksha Dagar, however, scored an even par on Day 2 as she slipped down by seven positions in the standings.

The par for the 18-hole course is 72 at the Le Golf National.

The Indian duo are tied for 14th in the women’s golf event after the second round with a total of 143.

Switzerland’s Morgane Metraux, a two-time winner on the Ladies European Tour, is atop the standings with a score of 8-under 136. The People’s Republic of China’s Yin Ruoning and New Zealand’s Ko Lydia, a two-time Olympic medallist, complete the top three.

The third round and penultimate round of the women’s golf tournament at Paris 2024 starts at 12:30 PM IST tomorrow (August 9).

Wrestling: Aman Sehrawat faces Rei Higuchi in semis

India’s Aman Sehrawat stormed into the men’s 57kg freestyle semi-finals in the Paris 2024 Olympics wrestling competition on Thursday.

The Indian wrestler won back-to-back bouts on technical superiority. First, Aman won 10-0 against North Macedonia’s Vladimir Egorov, a former European Championships gold medallist, in the round of 16.

Asian champion Aman, later, upstaged former world champion Zelimkhan Abakarov of Albania 12-0 in the quarter-final.

The 21-year-old Indian grappler is only one win away from a confirmed medal on his Olympic debut.

However, he will wrestle against Japan’s Rei Higuchi, a Rio 2016 silver medallist, in the semi-finals. Higuchi is also a former world champion and a World Championships silver medallist last year.

The Aman Sehrawat vs Rei Higuchi men’s 57kg freestyle semi-final wrestling bout will start at 9:45 PM IST.

Hockey: PR Sreejesh ends international career with Paris 2024 bronze

Indian men’s hockey stalwart PR Sreejesh played his last international match as the team beat Spain in the bronze medal match at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Sreejesh, ahead of the Summer Games, had announced his retirement after the end of the Olympics.

In his illustrious career, Sreejesh has won two Olympic bronze medals, two Asian Games titles, two Commonwealth Games silver medals and five Asian Champions Trophy gold medals.

The Kerala-based shot-stopper was awarded the Khel Ratna Award, which is the highest sporting award in India. Sreejesh is also a Padma Shri awardee.

"I think here's the best way to say goodbye to this beautiful game. And I'm so proud and I'm so honoured to play this beautiful game for the last 24 years, and for my country for 20 years," Sreejesh said after the game.

"It's not hard. It's learning every scenario, every situation, every match, everything teaches you something if you are willing to learn, if you are ready to accept, and if you are ready to apply it in your life.

"And I think that's what these guys are showing here. That's what this medal means for us," added Sreejesh.

PR Sreejesh ended his international men's hockey career with two Olympic bronze medals.

The Indian men’s hockey team trumped Spain 2-1 in the bronze medal match at the Paris 2024 Olympics. As a result, Harmanpreet Singh and Co. replicated their finish from Tokyo 2020.

The bronze is India’s fourth at the Summer Games and their 13th Olympic medal in men’s hockey. For the first time since Munich 1972, India have bagged back-to-back Olympic medals.

The Indian captain finished the tournament with 10 goals as PR Sreejesh ended his international career with an Olympic medal.

Earlier, Harmanpreet Singh cancelled out Marc Miralles’ penalty stroke with two successful penalty corners.

Spain edged the possession 51-49 in the bronze medal match and logged more attacking circle penetrations. However, the Indian defence held its own and controlled the Redsticks’ threat.

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu celebrates her 30th birthday today at the Olympic Village in Paris.

Mirabai, a Tokyo 2020 silver medallist, missed out on the Paris 2024 Olympics podium by only 1kg on Wednesday.

The Manipur-based weightlifter is a two-time Commonwealth Games champion (Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022) and was also the World Championships gold medallist at Anaheim 2017.

Mirabai was a clean and jerk world record holder (119 kg) in 2021 until Zhang Huihua of the People’s Republic of China bettered it in 2023.

On Wednesday, Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat upstaged Albania’s Zelimkhan Abakarov 12-0 in the men’s 57kg freestyle quarter-final bout at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Asian Championships winner Aman outclassed Abakarov, the first Albanian world champion, in the second round of the bout, scoring nine points with 2:04 remaining on the clock.

The Indian grappler executed a fitele, a move in wrestling where one grappler catches hold of their opponent’s ankles and twirls them around in quick succession, which took Abakarov by surprise.

Aman will be up against top-seeded Rei Higuchi of Japan, a Rio 2016 silver medallist, in the semi-finals tonight at 9:45 PM IST. He is one win away from confirming a first wrestling medal for India at Paris 2024.

The India vs Spain fixture has been played on 16 occasions, so far, in men’s hockey. India edge the head-to-head record , only slightly, with six wins compared to Spain’s five. There have also been five drawn matches.

India’s Anshu Malik went down 2-7 against the USA’s Helen Louise Maroulis in the women’s 57kg freestyle round of 16 wrestling bout at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Indian wrestler had also lost the World Championships final to Maroulis three years ago. She had also lost in the opening round at Tokyo 2020.

Maroulis, a Rio 2016 champion in 53kg, will face Alina Hrushyna Akobiia of Ukraine in the quarter-finals, followed by a potential clash against top-seed Tsugumi Sakurai of Japan in the semi-finals.

For Anshu to make the repechage round, Maroulis will have to outwrestle both of them.

Athletics: Jyothi Yarraji fails to make hurdles semis

Jyothi Yarraji , an Asian Games silver medallist, clocked 13.17s in the women’s 100m hurdles repechage round to finish fourth in heat 1 and 16th overall at the Stade de France today.

She, as a result, did not make the semi-final of the event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Only the top two hurdles from each heat advanced to the penultimate round.

South Africa's Marione Fourie topped the heat with a time of 12.79s and Maayke Tjin-A-Lim finished second with a season best of 12.87s. Both made the semi-finals. Liberia's Ebony Morrison, Ecuador's Maribel Caicedo, Finland's Lotta Harala and Japan's Yumi Tanaka were the qualifiers from the other two heats.

Yarraji, notably, was the first female athlete to represent India in the 100m hurdles at the Olympics. She was timed 13.16s in round 1 to make today’s repechage event.

Score : Jyothi Yarraji (IND) ranked fourth in heat 1 of the women’s 100m hurdles repechage round. Yarraji did not advance to the semi-finals.

Athletics: Jyothi Yarraji races in 100m hurdles repechage

Indian national record holder Jyothi Yarraji has taken the field for the women’s 100m hurdles repechage round at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Yarraji, an Asian champion, clocked 13.16s in the first round to rank 35th overall and make the repechage round.

In today’s race, only the top two hurdlers in each repechage heat will advance to the semi-finals. There are a total of three heats. Yarraji is placed in heat 1.

Indian golfers Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar are in action today in the second round of the women’s golf tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

A total of four rounds will be contested across four days at the Le Golf National. The top three golfers at the end of the fourth round will make the Olympic podium.

It was a promising start for Diksha Dagar in the first round, carding 1-under 71 to rank T7. Aditi Ashok, who narrowly missed out on bronze at Tokyo 2020, was on even par and placed T13.

Wrestling: Vinesh Phogat retires after Paris 2024 heartbreak

Vinesh Phogat, after her disqualification from the Paris 2024 Olympics, announced her retirement from wrestling on Thursday.

She was set to become India’s first female wrestler to feature in an Olympic final. However, on the second weigh-in, Vinesh was marginally over the weight limit despite drastic measures taken overnight to make the 50kg cut.

"Mother, wrestling won against me, I lost. Your dreams and my courage are broken. I don't have the strength to go on anymore. Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024. I will forever be indebted to all of you. Please forgive me," Vinesh wrote, addressing her mother Premlata.

I was proud of the fact that she tackled topics that were especially important to women, such as sexual assault in the military, and that her work helped prompt the Pentagon to institute wide-ranging reforms. I appreciated her focus on the long-term effects of Covid on women. I watched her interview powerful women chief executives and the four highest-ranking women in the military, all of whom were four-star generals and admirals. I knew viewers were seeing these stories because Norah was the driving force behind telling them.

The same week Ms. O’Donnell revealed she would be leaving the anchor desk to focus on conducting high-profile interviews for CBS, the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team was crushing it at the Paris Olympic Games. Like so many watching, I marveled at the incredible athleticism of these young women, as well as at their diversity. The team looked like America, and I found that exhilarating. Equally exciting was the fact that this was the first Olympics in history where there were as many women as men competing. We’ve come a long way. And I couldn’t stop watching an Instagram post of a 5-year-old Black gymnast on the balance beam in her living room, performing walkovers and dreaming of becoming an Olympian one day. Wow, I thought — this is why representation matters.

We’re also in the midst of a campaign that could result in the election of the first woman president, and first woman of color as president. It’s a potentially historic story — one that needs a diverse group of journalists covering it.

So it was more than a little disappointing to read that Ms. O’Donnell would be replaced by two men, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois. Don’t get me wrong: I know, like and respect these two journalists. But soon, on the big three networks, there will be four male anchors. Yes, the talented Margaret Brennan will be contributing stories from the Washington bureau for CBS, but the two people who will be greeting Americans watching the CBS evening newscast will be men.

More important, the three people behind the scenes, making most of the editorial decisions, will be three white men: Bill Owens, Guy Campanile and Jerry Cipriano. Mr. Cipriano was my right-hand writer during my tenure on “Evening News.” I loved working with him and he always had my back.
